Is Antibacterial soap bad for you? | #aumsum #kids #education #science #learn
Antibacterial soaps claim that they destroy or remove more germs or bacteria as compared to regular soaps. However, this is not completely true. Antibacterial soaps contain various chemicals such as triclosan and triclocarban that actually don't do any benefit, but instead they harm us. Long term exposure to triclosan can create antibiotic resistant bacteria or super bacteria. When we use antibacterial soaps that contain triclosan, it may kill most of the bacteria present on our body. But the remaining ones that survived could divide and pass on the resistance to other bacteria, thus creating super bacteria which are more difficult to kill. Besides this, as triclosan penetrates the skin, it can also cause various health problems. Hence, it is advised to use regular soaps.

If you have a family or a home then you've probably wondered should you use antibacterial soap or not. The answer might surprise you. It's time for the germaphobes among us to accept that they are covered with bacteria at all times, everywhere. And, there is nothing that you can, or should, do about it! The bacteria on your skin, in your mouth and on your counter are your friends. Is Antibacterial Soap Better Than Regular Soap?
Is antibacterial soap better than regular soap? The billion dollar antibacterial soap industry will try to make you believe it is - “They kill 99.9% of germs!”….how can they not be better? A brilliant study published in 2005 will help us answer this question. The authors went to the squatter settlements (slums) of Karachi in Pakistan to conduct their research. In these slums, there is very limited access to city infrastructure. Most households have 2 rooms where an average of 10 people reside. Most households have toilets, but they drain into open sewers. They don’t use toilet paper after “number 2” but rather use their hand to wash their backside from a pitcher of water. They then dry their hands on their clothes and only wash them after several days of wear. The water that they use for drinking and washing is very contaminated with poo and they have very high rates of infectious diseases. The study randomised 36 neighbourhoods in these squatter settlements to either continue their current hygiene practice or to receive a soap intervention. Of the 25 neighbourhoods randomised to the soap intervention, half of the households were randomised to receive regular soap, while the other households were randomised to receive an antibacterial soap which contained 1.2% triclocarban (the most common antibacterial in soaps). They were given as much soap as they needed and both types of soaps looked and smelt identical. They were plain white bars with no symbols or brand names. None of the families or field workers knew which of the soaps the household was getting. In the “soap” neighbourhoods, a field worker would come to each household once or twice per week and educate and encourage hand washing practices. They showed the families how and when to wash their hands properly during these visits. To control for this, fieldworkers would also regularly attend the houses of the non-soap neighbourhoods. There they would give them children’s books and pens and things, but neither encourage nor discourage hand washing. The field workers would also ask each household they were visiting whether any of the family members had any illnesses at the time or in the few days since their last visit. They would ask about diarrhoea, cough, difficulty breathing, and they would also check their skin for signs of a skin infection called impetigo (school sores). They did this for 1 full year. What they found was remarkable: Pneumonia: In the non-soap neighbourhoods on average 4.4% of kids developed pneumonia per week. PER WEEK!!! (that’s a lot). While 2.2% per week developed pneumonia in the soap neighbourhoods - 50% less, and there was no difference in rates of pneumonia if they got antibacterial soap or regular soap Diarrhoea 4% of kids were getting diarrhoea per week in the non-soap neighbourhoods, but less than 2% were getting diarrhoea per week in the soap neighbourhoods. And again…no difference between the antibacterial or normal soap groups. They also looked at skin infections, and the common cold and again, found 50% less common colds and 34% less skin infections in the soap groups. So was antibacterial soap better? - No! There was no difference in disease rates between the antibacterial soap group and the normal soap group. To hammer it home even more - a study in 2015 showed that there was no difference in the amount of bacteria killed between antibacterial soap and normal soap. You would have to soak your hands in antibacterial soap for 9 hours before its benefits would kick in. References: 1. The result of physical, as opposed to biological processes, proper hand washing with regular soap will thoroughly remove bacteria. Why I Don't Use Soap 😮😮😮 (Much)
https://MamaNatural.com 🔅 Here's the soap I do use ➜ http://amzn.to/1UvgCxR Why don't I use soap much? Well... - Most soaps contain bad ingredients - Soaps can interfere with natural oil production of skin - Soaps can interfere with vitamin D absorption - Soaps can interfere with a healthy microbiome And don't even get me started on antibacterial soap! That stuff is so bad for you. So what's my solution, not bathing? No! I bathe pretty frequently, I just don't lather up my whole body. Instead, I use soap on my pits and my bits, if you know what I mean, and just rinse the rest of my body. Antibacterial soaps' dirty secrets?
Despite claims to the contrary, it turns out, antibacterial soaps sold in the US, may do more harm than good. The US government health watchdog said exposure to one of the key chemicals found in many antibacterial soaps, may even cause health risks. It first began evaluating the health concerns over the chemical ingredient Triclosan forty years ago, but has only just issued its preliminary ruling. Al Jazeera's Kimberly Halkett reports from Washington DC.

It gave the industry a year to comply, which puts us here -- at Sept. 2017 :D -The rule applies to over the counter antiseptic wash products (the industry’s way of saying - hand and body products used with water) containing triclosan and 18 other ingredients. -The ruling doesn’t affect hand sanitizers, wipes or antibacterials used in medical/healthcare settings, so your doctor can still use triclosan in antiseptic scrubs. -The ingredients were banned after manufacturers failed to provide the requested data to establish safety and effectiveness for the 19 ingredients. -Triclosan is not any better than non-antibacterial hand soaps in reducing bacteria count on hands. -Right now, WE HAVE LITTLE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE OF HOW TRICLOSAN IMPACTS HUMANS. The concerns point to potential problems, but do not directly prove it. This has caused some to believe that any risk --- is problematic and best to error on the side of caution. Antibacterial Products: More Harm Than Good?
By Heidi Hatch(KUTV) Many of us look to antibacterial products to keep our families safe and healthy. However, antibacterial products may do more harm than good. The FDA is weighing the risks verses benefits of antibacterial products carrying the chemical triclosan. Although, this has been a topic of debate for decades, the FDA is now saying they are nearing a final decision on whether products in the U.S. can continue to use the chemical. The stepped up urgency has come in recent years with tests indicating the chemical could be a carcinogen, could wreak havoc on the immune system and interrupt the work of the thyroid gland that controls your body€™s hormones. Triclosan is most commonly used in antibacterial soaps that line store shelves, but is also found in other products, including deodorants, body-wash, clothes, toys, laundry soap, and toothpaste. Joshua Redd, a chiropractic physician, is one of a growing number of doctors and activists concerned about what triclosan can do to the body. Redd says a new study on the chemical is, €œpretty alarming, showing decreased heart function by 25% and muscle function by 18%€ when triclosan is introduced to lab animals. The European Union banned triclosan in most of its products years ago over concerns that have been widely reported on for decades. Redd explains, €œOur thyroid hormones are crucial and with triclosan mimicking your thyroid hormones it can cause a slew of different problems in the endocrine system.€ He says it can cause €œearly onset of puberty, and problems with testosterone, estrogen and the reproductive system.€ Nixon was president when the FDA started reviewing the chemical. In 1972, Congress asked the FDA to officially investigate the safety of triclosan. Six years later, the FDA published its first tentative guidelines, saying triclosan is not generally recognized as safe and effective, Flash forward 40 years and studies show triclosan is no better than old fashioned soap and water for cleaning your hands, but at the same time could be creating antibiotic resistant germs. The only thing triclosan has ever been approved for is toothpaste. Colgate uses it in some of their products to fight gingivitis. While it can help in preventing gingivitis, some doctors wonder if it could do more damage as it is easily taken into the blood stream through the mouth. A recent study shows 75% of Americans test positive for the chemical in their urine, as well as in the breast milk of nursing mothers. As for the slew of concerning studies there is one significant problem€”most of the studies have been done on animals as opposed to humans. Dr. Dev Abraham, an endocrinologist who specializes in thyroid cancer at the University of Utah, points out that €œin animal models the dose of compounds is often hundreds to thousands higher than what we are exposed to on a day to day basis as humans.€ Making the connection he says, at this point, may be a leap. He is waiting for a clear ruling from the FDA, but until then, he tells his patients, €œIf you€™re not sure, and concerned, the best thing is to buy is plain soap.€If you want to check the products you use at home, look on the back. Soaps and cleaning products will list triclosan as an active ingredient. In clothes and toys it will be listed as an €œanti-microbial€ product or under the chemical name microban. Because the chemical is used in many products, it also makes its way into ground water where it becomes a chemical known as dioxin€”a cancer causing agent. The FDA has committed to making a decision in the next few months. And while they are looking at science, you can be sure there are large multi-million and billion dollar companies urging them to rule in their favor. Antibacterial products are big sellers and huge money makers that could cost companies who use them. Here€™s what the FDA has said to date: http://www.fda.gov/forconsumers/consumerupdates/ucm205999.htmMayo Clinic response: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/triclosan/AN02141(Copyright 2013 Sinclair Broadcasting Group)

Antibacterial Products Good or Bad
Do you think that antibacterial products are good for you or bad? FDA has done a new research to see if antibacterial soaps and body washes are indeed good for you and helps fight off bad infections and or cold and flu viruses. The FDA says that there is NO proof that it is better for you, they actually think that it is worse for you because your body gets immune to it and you get sicker easier. I have not always been a fan of antibactieral stuff and neither was my grandma. They are going to have the companies re-write the pros and cons on the back of their bottles that are in stores or they will pull them all off.

Antibacterial Soap May Be Worse Than Regular Soap
According to a new study out of South Korea, antibacterial soap is just as effective as regular soap at killing germs, and could be harmful to your health. Researchers explain that the active ingredient in most antibacterial soaps, triclosan, does a better job of killing bacteria than regular soap— but only under very specific, unrealistic circumstances. Like, say, if you were to wash your hands for nine hours. If, however, you wash your hands with room temperature antibacterial soap for about 20 seconds, you may as well use regular soap. Triclosan has been raising FDA eyebrows for years. This study was, indeed, prompted by the FDA’s 2013 call for antibacterial soap makers to prove their product more effective than regular soap. http://fusion.net/story/198906/antibacterial-soap-lies/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=/feed/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

FDA Bans Keys Antibacterial Soap Ingredients
On Friday, the United States Food and Drug Administration released its highly anticipated report on the antibacterial soaps. The report found that triclosan and triclocarban, which are key ingredients in many soaps are actually very dangerous to consumers. The report found that these ingredients in antibacterial soap were closely tied to hormone disruption, bacterial resistance, and potential liver cancer. As a result of these findings, the FDA announced that companies in the United States are not allowed to market antibacterial soaps to consumers if they contain either of these dangerous products. However, this marketing ban does not impact products such as wipes or hand sanitizers. http://www.health.com/mind-body/fda-soap-triclosan-triclocarban http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Antibacterial Soap's Dirty Secret
Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation Makers of antibacterial hand soaps and body washes are being urged to come clean and demonstrate that their products are both safe and more effective than soap and water. The products have been at the centre of a four-decade investigation by US regulators, who said on Monday that they may do more harm than good. "Although consumers generally view these products as effective tools to help prevent the spread of germs, there is currently no evidence that they are any more effective at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water," the US Food and Drug Administration said in a statement. Long-term exposure to antibacterial chemicals, such as triclosan in liquid soaps and triclocarban in bar soaps, could have hormonal affects and allow bacteria to mutate into harder-to-control strains, according to research cited by the FDA. More than 2,000 soap products in the United States contain antimicrobial chemicals, and 93 percent of those in liquid form contain triclosan, the FDA said. Cleaning up the industry Triclosan may be associated with the development of allergies in children, said Dr Leonardo Trasande, associate professor of paediatrics at New York University. Dr Leonardo Trasande says chemicals found in antibacterial products may disrupt thyroid hormones. "The World Health Organisation in 2012 announced a report which documented great concern about the public health consequences of these chemicals," he told Al Jazeera. "I think families can go ahead and take care to eliminate triclosan from their homes. Soap and water work perfectly well." The proposed rule would not affect hand sanitisers, wipes or antimicrobial products used in healthcare settings, the FDA said. Industry trade lobbyists washed their hands of the FDA's research findings. "A review of two dozen relevant published studies analysing the effectiveness of antibacterial soaps showed that hand washing with these products produces statistically greater reductions in bacteria on the skin than when using non-antibacterial soap," said the American Cleaning Institute. The proposed FDA rule comes five days after the FDA issued new voluntary guidelines to phase out the use of antibiotics as a growth enhancer in livestock, also in an effort to stem a surge in human resistance to antibiotics. The livestock guidelines are "part of the [same] general equation of what are the benefits of using antimicrobials and how do they stack up against any risks", said Sandra Kweder, deputy director of the Office of New Drugs at the FDA. The proposed rule will be available for public comment for 180 days. Concurrently, companies will be given one year to submit new data and information, followed by a 60-day rebuttal comment period. According to the FDA, antibacterial soaps don't provide any benefit over regular soaps and there are potential risks to using them. 19 ingredients have been banned, including triclosan and triclocarban. The ban will go into effect in a year. Note: Something that I didn't mention in the video is that 3 other ingredients are going to be reviewed over the next year, so we still don't know if they will be banned or not. Those ingredients are: benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride and chloroxylenol. FDA Reviews Ingredient Found in Antibacterial Soap
The FDA is reviewing an ingredient found in antibacterial soap. There are a lot of chemicals that have never been official approved by the FDA that still show up in household products. The safety of triclosan, the active ingredient used in 75 percent of antibacterial soap is finally being reviewed by the FDA. Triclosan has been found in mouthwash, toothpaste, toys, soap, clothes and other household products for over 40 years. But because of research into the risks of the chemical, the FDA is planning to complete its four decade long review of triclosan. Studies of triclosan's effect on animals, shows that it might be the cause of hormone related problems, like early puberty or infertility. Back in 1972, Congress required the FDA to provide guidelines that dictate how much of any chemical is allowed to be in certain products. And in 1978, the FDA issued its initial guidelines which have seen several drafts since then, but have never been finalized. In 1997, the FDA approved the addition of triclosan in some toothpaste formulas after Colgate-Palmolive presented data showing it helped treat gingivitis.

Why we should STOP using antibacterial soaps!
We may think that antibacterial washes are more effective at preventing the spread of germs. But that’s not the case. But FDA just banned all antibacterials from soaps. "We have no scientific evidence that they are any better than plain soap and water," said Dr. Janet Woodcock, the Food and Drug Administration' drug center director. "In fact, some data suggests that antibacterial ingredients may do more harm than good over the long-term.” Research suggests that two ingredients used in antibacterial soaps — triclosan and triclocarban can interfere with hormone levels, disrupt muscle function and stimulate drug-resistant bacteria. And although the chemical kills bacteria by breaking open their cell walls, the process takes up to nine hours—so it is ineffective when simply washing hands. The FDA decision does not apply to hand sanitizers, most of which use alcohol rather than antibacterial chemicals.
