Spirometry is a test of how well you can breathe and can help in the diagnosis of different lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The test requires taking in a very deep breath and blowing out as fast as possible into a small device called a spirometer. Watch the video to learn how to take a test (this video was filmed at the 2009 European Respiratory Society annual congress in Vienna, Austria, courtesy of x-audio/soundbakery). To learn more visit www.http://YouAndAsthma.com To diagnose asthma, your doctor will ask you a few questions about your medical and family history, examine you, and do lung tests and other tests to measure how well your lungs are working. This animation explains spirometry, methacholine challenge test, exhaled nitric oxide test, x-rays and other scans, blood tests, and bronchoscopy. If you do have asthma, your doctor will also assess the severity of your asthma. There are 4 main levels, or grades, of asthma: intermittent, mild, moderate, and severe. This animation also explains common triggers for asthma and how best to minimize their impact on your life.

Created by Karun Tandon, Julian Yabut, Tiffany Tian, Eshan Shah, and Kim Nguyen for McMaster’s Demystifying Medicine seminar series. This video shows the Pulmonary Function test, which is used to measure how well lungs take in and release air. Using spirometry measurements and measuring how much air is exhaled, the diffusion capacity of oxygen from an individual’s lungs into the bloodstream can be determined. Do not smoke for 4 to 6 hours before the test. Spirometry is a standard lung volume test to diagnosis asthma. It involves a spirometer and breathing tube to measure a person’s lung volume during normal and active breathing. In this video, a detail run-through of a spirometry test is presented. Use a Breathe-O-Meter to measure the Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) of your lungs. This simple device produces accurate readings and checks the power of your lungs effectively. One has to simply exhale into the device to produce PEFR readings. The readings can effectively help diagnose any underlying diseases such asthma, cough, COPD and so on. It helps to keep a track of your lung condition and is a useful tool in monitoring and controlling asthma. For more information, visit http://www.breathefree.com/

This video is an informative animated presentation that explains in detail about Spirometry. Spirometry is a test of how well your lungs are working by measuring how fast and how much you can breathe in and out. Normally as you breathe in or inhale, air moves freely through your trachea then through bronchi and then into bronchioles, and finally into tiny sacs called alveoli. Your doctor may recommend a spirometry test to identify a disease in your lungs, check the severity up your existing lung disease or to determine if the medications are helping. During the test your care giver will use a device called a spirometer. A spirometer is a machine that measures the air you breathe out. You will need to perform the spirometry test correctly three times to get accurate results. Watch the video to know more in details about Spirometry. The process of diagnosing asthma in adults and children over 5 years is the same. Doctors look at three main things when diagnosing asthma. First they must prove that you have some blockage of your airways. They must also determine whether the blockage is reversible - in other words, that your symptoms can be relieved by medication. A peak flow meter or spirometer is used to test this. They must also rule out any other illnesses that can cause symptoms similar to asthma. --- Asthma Answers at a Click was developed to supplement and reinforce the asthma education provided by your physician, not as a replacement for medical care and advice. As a Web-based product, Asthma Answers at a Click gives you an opportunity to access a wealth of asthma information regarding symptoms, management techniques, medications and triggers in the privacy of your own home, at your leisure, 24/7. This is accomplished with over 800 minutes of video clips, featuring asthma experts including pulmonologists, allergists, pharmacists, intensive care specialists, and Olympic gold medal winner Jackie Joyner Kersee, who also has severe asthma. Spirometry and a peak flow meter are two devices to measure lung function. A spirometry is a computerized measurement of lung function performed in the office. Spirometry is often measured before and after receiving medication. The percentage of change in lung function is a factor in making the diagnosis of asthma. Peak flows are measured both in the office and in the home setting by the patient.

How do you diagnose asthma? We have improved dramatically in our ability to diagnose asthma properly. Allergy testing now is done very easily, and we can identify which of the specific allergen triggers are important in causing the patient's asthma. We now have pulmonary function testing, which can actually measure air flow in the lungs, then give the patient medication and see if the air flow improves. This is how we make our diagnosis. After the diagnosis of asthma is made, there are a number of treatment options available. The decision to choose a treatment option depends on the severity of the asthma and the health of the patient. Spirometry testing is performed by breathing into a machine, and as a result, lung function can be measured . The earlier the test is performed, the earlier lung disease can be detected and treated

Using an incentive spirometer help us to practice taking deep breaths, which can help open our airways, prevent fluid or mucus from building up in our lungs, and make it easier for us to breathe. After finished the 10 to 15 exercises, its very important to take a deep breath and cough for 2 to 3 times. This will help loosen any mucus that has built up in our lungs. It will make it easier for us to breathe. If you just had surgery, hold a pillow over your incision when you cough. This will support your belly or chest and reduce your pain.
