Finding Another Treatment Option for Stage IV Lung Cancer: K.C.’s Immunotherapy Story

04:09
K.C. was initially diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer in 2015. After receiving chemotherapy and radiation, her healthcare team was not optimistic—her cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and progressed to stage 4. K.C. sought a second opinion in Houston and began treatment of nivolumab. She responded to the immunotherapy immediately, and her recent scans shows no evidence of disease. Today K.C. continues to work full-time and experiences new adventures with her two daughters, Avery and Anna, and her husband, Joey. This video is presented as part of the Cancer Research Institute 6th Annual Cancer Immunotherapy Month awareness campaign this June 2018. Asbestos Exposure Lung Cancer Survivor – Patrick Appert

02:05
Patient Bio: Patrick Appert After having exposure to asbestos and being diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma, Patrick Appert and his wife travelled to Boston to meet with Dr. David Sugarbaker, a Mesothelioma Doctor who treats asbestos symptoms in 2011. He had received mesothelioma treatment surgery that year, and has continued seeing Dr. Sugarbaker, even following him when he came to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas. At Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Sugarbaker’s comprehensive lung and mesothelioma treatment centers focus on increasing patient life expectancy. Now, years later, Mr. Appert leads a very active life with his wife and family. Symptoms: Patients with Asbestos poisoning deal with Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms. Asbestos Exposure accounts for the majority of all mesothelioma cases. The asbestos build up develops in the thin tissue layer around the lungs called the pleura. Patients may suffer from a variety of asbestos symptoms. The most common asbestosis symptoms include: Persistent coughing or wheezing Night sweats / fever Fatigue Shortness of breath Difficulty swallowing Weight loss Chest wall pain Their search/story: Patrick Appert was told he was exposed to asbestos dust. He then set out to understand the signs and symptoms of asbestos lung disease and looked around for help in his local city for an asbestos cure to treat this form of lung cancer caused by asbestos. He came to the conclusion that this form of advanced lung cancer can be treated by a few mesothelioma doctors. His primary questions were: “Is asbestos cancer curable?” “Is asbestos cancer a death sentence?” Patrick searched for an Asbestos Doctor and found Dr. Sugarbaker, an internationally-recognized lung cancer expert, who treats asbestos disease. Dr. Sugarbaker’s primary focus is to remove as much asbestos as possible from the lung and increase his patients’ life expectancy. Dr. Sugarbakers Profile: Dr. Sugarbaker is one of the world’s leading experts in treating asbestos exposure and symptoms. With his years of experience and innovations in asbestos treatment, it’s no wonder Dr. Sugarbaker is the go-to guy when it comes to asbestosis treatment. Dr. Sugarbaker has developed a “three pronged approach” to treating malignant pleural mesothelioma. Dr. Sugarbaker’s three pronged approach encompasses chemotherapy, radical surgery, and radiation therapy to treat patients with asbestos poisoning. Asbestos Treatment: Sugarbaker’s renowned treatment for mesothelioma patients includes: asbestos removal procedures • Extrapleural pneumonectomy – a procedure honed and nearly perfected by Dr. Sugarbaker while he led the International Mesothelioma Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for 25 year. Extrapleural pneumonectomy involves removing the ailing lung and areas surrounding the disease with some exception, this procedure is primarily reserved for early cancer patients whose asbestos disease affects only one pleural surface. Other necessary criteria include good health and optimal functioning of the heart and kidney are necessary. • Pleurectomy - a procedure that removes the lung’s lining layers (the pleura) and surrounding tumors, without removing the entire lung (unlike the extra pneumonectomy procedure). Eligible patients usually have an early-stage cancer, or Stage 1, diagnosis. Likewise, the patient must be in generally good health. • Chemotherapy – an adjuvant strategy included in Dr. Sugarbaker’s three-pronged treatment approach. After surgery patients may receive chemotherapy to kill any remaining cancer. With some success Dr. Sugarbaker has been experimenting with a more advanced chemotherapy that targets the molecular level of cancer cells. • Radiation –an adjuvant strategy also employed after surgery. External beam variety radiation is used to kill off any remaining cancer cells post-surgery. After Treatment: Patrick Appert is an Asbestos lung cancer survivor. Before he sought treatment from Dr. Sugarbaker, he was told that he only had 9 to 11 months to live. Now it has been 2 years, and he still enjoys life to the fullest. His favorite activities are woodworking and building model airplanes. He is proud to be an asbestos cancer survivor.

Concurrent chemotherapy and proton therapy improves survival in patients with advanced lung cancer

02:48
Dr. Steven Frank, medical director at the MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center, and Dr. Joe Y. Chang, professor of Radiation Oncology, discuss a recent study on how concurrent chemotherapy and proton therapy improves survival in patients with advanced lung cancer. The study opened at MD Anderson in 2006, and in this research, Dr. Chang and his colleagues report on the study’s five-year results. The findings are the final results of the single institution, Phase II study and represent the longest follow-up to date of stage 3 lung cancer patients who have received proton therapy. “With our study, we hypothesized that proton therapy would offer a survival benefit to patients and reduce treatment-associated toxicities, which can be very serious,” explained Chang. Jim Allison, Ph.D., Nobel Prize News Conference

35:59
MD Anderson hosted a news conference with Nobel Prize winner Jim Allison, Ph.D. Allison was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for launching an effective new way to attack cancer by treating the immune system rather than the tumor. Allison is the first MD Anderson scientist to receive the world’s most preeminent award for outstanding discoveries in the fields of life sciences and medicine. “I’m honored and humbled to receive this prestigious recognition,” Allison said. “A driving motivation for scientists is simply to push the frontiers of knowledge. I didn’t set out to study cancer, but to understand the biology of T cells, these incredible cells that travel our bodies and work to protect us.” Allison started his career at MD Anderson in 1977, arriving as one of the first employees of a new basic science research center located in Smithville, Texas. He was recruited back to MD Anderson in November 2012 to lead the Immunology Department and to establish an immunotherapy research platform for MD Anderson’s Moon Shots Program. The prize recognizes Allison’s basic science discoveries on the biology of T cells, the adaptive immune system’s soldiers, and his invention of immune checkpoint blockade to treat cancer. Allison’s crucial insight was to block a protein on T cells that acts as a brake on their activation, freeing the T cells to attack cancer. He developed an antibody to block the checkpoint protein CTLA-4 and demonstrated the success of the approach in experimental models. His work led to development of the first immune checkpoint inhibitor drug. Ipilimumab was approved for late-stage melanoma by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2011. His drug, known commercially as Yervoy, became the first to extend the survival of patients with late-stage melanoma. Follow-up studies show 20 percent of those treated live for at least three years with many living for 10 years and beyond, unprecedented results. Subsequent research has extended this approach to new immune regulatory targets, most prominently PD-1 and PD-L1, with drugs approved to treat certain types and stages of melanoma, lung, kidney, bladder, gastric, liver, cervical, colorectal, and head and neck cancers and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Clinical trials are underway in many other cancer types. Lung Cancer Survivor Mesothelioma – Dr. Charles Reaume

01:45
Patient Bio: Retired physician from Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Charles Reaume never considered that he had lung cancer; his symptoms had gone unnoticed. After having fluid removed from his lung 3-4 times, his physician told him he noticed some cells that looked suspicious. Then, after receiving a biopsy he was told he had a rare form of lung cancer disease – Mesothelioma. After receiving the prognosis of lung cancer (Mesothelioma) Dr. Charles Reaume immediately became concern with lung cancer life expectancy and sought to find a lung cancer doctor who specializes in Mesothelioma. He decided to travel to see Dr. David Sugarbaker a well renowned physician who treats this rare form of lung cancer. He was also one of the very few patients to be seen as a lung cancer patient at the new Mesothelioma Treatment Center at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas. After Dr. Reaume’s initial visit, he later had lung cancer treatment and surgery completed. He is now over a year out from his treatment and doing wonderfully. Symptoms: Signs of lung cancer in men regarding asbestos exposure can often go unnoticed and later develop into a mesothelioma case. Asbestos gets trapped in the thin lining layer around the lung. Patients with prognosis of lung cancer Mesothelioma can have some of these common lung cancer symptoms: Chest wall pain Fatigue Night sweats / fever Weight loss Persistent coughing or wheezing Difficulty swallowing Shortness of breath Their search/story: Dr. Charles Reaume wasn’t aware he was exposed to asbestos dust. He lived his life without any signs and symptoms of lung cancer until his local doctor decided to take an extra look. His primary doctor told him that the hunt for asbestos cure still lives on in medical research today, but there is unfortunately no cure for asbestos lung cancer. He did mention that there are very effective treatments available to treat this form of lung cancer caused by asbestos. After Dr. Reaume received a lung cancer stage diagnosis, he went in search of a mesothelioma doctor. His primary questions were: “Is lung cancer curable?” and “Is asbestos disease a death sentence?” Dr. Charles Reaume was referred to an asbestos doctor - Dr. Sugarbaker. Dr. Sugarbaker is a highly regarded physician who is a pioneer in treating asbestos disease and mesothelioma cancer. Dr. Sugarbaker’s effective method is to remove the effected tissue exposed to asbestos as much as possible from the lung thus eliminating cancer from the body and hoping to increase the likelihood of a patients’ life expectancy. Dr. Sugarbakers Profile: Dr. Sugarbaker is a leading physician when it comes to treating lung cancer caused by asbestos. His years of experience have made him internationally recognized as a physician that can treat lung cancer and remove effected tissue exposed to asbestos. It’s no wonder that patients from all over the world seek out Dr. Sugarbaker for asbestosis treatment. Dr. Sugarbaker has developed a “3 part lung treatment approach” when treating malignant pleural mesothelioma. Dr. Sugarbaker’s 3 part treatment approach encompasses radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and radical surgery to treat his patients with mesothelioma. Lung Cancer Asbestos Treatment: Ongoing medical research is looking for a cure for lung cancer. However, this rare form known as Mesothelioma has a few effective treatment options: Sugarbaker’s lung cancer asbestos removal procedures are: • Extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) – a procedure Dr. Sugarbaker spent 25 years of his career perfecting. . EPP surgically removes the cancerous lung and some of its surroundings. EPP candidates must typically meet the following criteria: an early stage cancer diagnosis; relatively good health; and normal heart and kidney function. • Pleurectomy - a lung-sparing surgical procedures that removes the lining layers (the pleura) and nearby tumors, . Candidates eligible for pleurectomy are typically Stage 1 cancer patients and in good health. • Chemotherapy – part of Dr. Sugarbaker’s multi-modal treatment approach. Chemotherapy is employed after surgery to destroy any remaining cancer. Dr. Sugarbaker has been developing a more targeted form of chemotherapy that attacks cancer cells at the molecular level. • Radiation –also part of Dr. Sugarbaker’s treatment toolbox. Extra beam radiation therapy is employed after surgery to eradicate remaining cancer. After Treatment: Dr. Charles Reaume fought Mesothilioma with the help of Dr. Sugarbaker and is now an Asbestos lung cancer survivor. When Dr. Charles Reaume was first diagnosed with lung cancer he was told he would only live up to 6 months. It has been a year and a half, and he enjoys his life to the fullest with his lovely wife. His favorite activities are walking and visiting family members. He is proud to be a mesothelioma lung cancer survivor.

Interview with Dennis Fulcher, Lung Cancer Stage 3B

08:53
This video is hopefully inspiring to those who have struggled with a terminal diagnoses of cancer or have families or friends that have been affected by this disease. The following questions are answered: 1) What is your current situation and diagnosis? 2) How do you take this kind of news? 3) What are some stories you would like to share? 4) Whats something that has recently happened to you on this journey? Also my youngest daughter describes her "spin" on what happened. The intent is to encourage viewers with my perceptions on life through the eyes of faith. My core scripture is now Romans 8:28. "And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, who are called according to His purpose." I believe that what is most important is NOT to sit around and ask, "why did this happen to me?" because I had none of the common risk factors, such as smoking, The bigger question is, "What can I do to make the best of the situation and live each day like it's the Superbowl?", because time is so precious. This is not a preachy type of interview that slams non-believers, but hopefully, shows how to deal with what lies ahead from a concerned father's perspective, Doctors agree on my prognosis there is only a single digit chance to live 5 years. Prior to this video, I had seen over six doctors that specialize in this field. Also, I encourage anyone who has a terminal cancer diagnoses to research their options carefully, and understand about recent breakthroughs such as DNA sequencing and CD47 with Stanford University (still a ways out at this point). I hope to obtain the best medical treatment in the world at MD Anderson in Houston, but understand that my hope does not lie solely in that outcome, but also in a God who can deliver us through the fire, or completely out of the fire, whatever He chooses to do. As an electrical engineer employed with the U.S. Air Force through the DOD, I've learned to analyze, research and investigate software requirements for the B-1 Bomber using operational flight programs through the system program office (SPO). I'm very grateful to the Air Force and Department of Defense for trusting me and hopefully find better days ahead in my career. Life Church in OKC has been my home for the last 3 years and I've found it to be a source of great teaching, strength and friendship. Yes, it pretty much rocks. Check it out at www.lifechurch.tv

For many lung cancer patients, Keytruda is a better initial treatment than chemotherapy, study finds

05:52
For many lung cancer patients, Keytruda is a better initial treatment than chemotherapy, study finds lung cancer, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, cancer treatment, clinical trials, medical research, ASCO, American Society of Clinical Oncology https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCd4_4MPV20qVj80Rm_cQHOw?sub_confirmation=1 In findings that may allow many lung cancer patients to avoid chemotherapy, a large clinical trial has shown that the immunotherapy drug Keytruda is a more effective initial treatment for two-thirds of patients with the most common type of lung cancer. Compared with advanced small-cell lung cancer patients who got chemotherapy, those treated first with Keytruda had a median survival time that was four to eight months longer. Advertisement The difference was greatest among patients whose cancers harbored high levels of the genetic mutations Keytruda uses to target malignancy. But even patients whose cancers had very low levels of these mutations outlived patients who got chemotherapy by a median of four months. In addition, treating lung cancer patients with Keytruda improved quality of life. Among those who got the immunotherapy drug, only 18% experienced severe side effects, compared with 41% on chemotherapy. The findings, presented this week at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, will probably expand Keytruda’s use as a first-line treatment for advanced small-cell lung cancer, the most common form of the disease. At the same time, it’s sure to raise dilemmas for physicians and insurers struggling to identify when and in which advanced lung cancer patients the use of a very costly new medication makes sense. A year’s therapy with Keytruda can cost as much as $150,000. The cost of the chemotherapy cocktails to which it was compared in the new study is a few thousand dollars. In 2016, the Food and Drug Administration approved the marketing of Keytruda (also known as pembrolizumab) for use in lung cancer patients whose cancers had been genetically tested and were found to have levels of PD-L1 — a mutation that Keytruda targets — of 50% or higher. About one-third of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer meet this criterion. The new clinical trial, called Keynote-042, tested Keytruda’s effectiveness in newly diagnosed patients whose PD-L1 levels were as low as 1% — a population that represents two-thirds of those with small cell lung cancer. Researchers randomly assigned 1,274 people with advanced disease to receive one of two kinds of chemotherapy — either paclitaxel (marketed as Taxol) plus carboplatin or pemetrexed (marketed as Alimta) plus carboplatin — or Keytruda. Then, researchers followed their cases for a median of 12.8 months. Among patients whose PD-L1 levels were from 1% to 19%, those who got Keytruda lived for a median of 16.7 months after diagnoses while those who got chemotherapy lived a median of 12.8 months. Among patients with PD-L1 levels from 20% to 49%, those who got Keytruda lived a median of 17.7 months compared with 13 months for patients on chemotherapy. Patients whose PD-L1 levels were above 50% — those for whom Keytruda already has the FDA’s blessing — survived a median of 20 months with Keytruda, compared with 12.2 months for chemotherapy. The study has not yet

DYING OF CANCER -- Chemo RAW -- cancer diaries -- cancer patient dying

08:25
I am dying of cancer. As a cancer patient, he chemotherapy side effects are gruesome. My skin caner (melanoma) has turned into lung cancer. This chemotherapy (chemo) diary is necessary for me to attempt to describe what is going on with my life. The chemo is so unlike anything else I have ever experienced, it was very hard for me to construct an emotionally appropriate video according to the way I felt during the experience. This was as close as I could com, so here is Diary of a Dying Man.. My goal is not to gross anyone out, but to transfer a notion of life that might not ordinarily be understood. This is real, this is how I feel. | Diaries of a Dying Man (D.D.M.) by Joshua Kline | My name is Joshua and I have cancer, welcome to my videos. Also, thanks for all the caring staff at St. Luke's, Houston Texas (TX) !!!!

Press Conference: Lung Cancer Screening Programs in Communities Are Vital, But Challenges Exist

22:26
This press conference took place on January 24, 2017, at the STS 53rd Annual Meeting in Houston. For more information, contact media@sts.org. Implementing lung cancer screening as a high-quality preventive health service in a community setting is feasible, but comes with several key challenges, according to a scientific presentation at the 53rd Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. “Successful implementation of lung cancer screening will help reduce death from lung cancer,” said Doraid Jarrar, MD, from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, who led the study. “But unfortunately, lung cancer screening does not share the same broad support from the public and the government as do breast and colon cancer screening. In addition, lung cancer remains stigmatized because of its association with cigarette smoking.” Dr. Jarrar, Simran Randhawa, MD, of Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia, PA, and colleagues conducted a 12-month prospective study of eligible patients at Einstein. Data were collected using the American College of Radiology (ACR) Lung Imaging Reporting and Data System (Lung-RADS) and compared to corresponding data from Einstein’s Tumor Registry. A lung navigator confirmed eligibility of 278 patients using National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) criteria and provided feedback to patients and referring physicians. Beyond the boundaries: The moon shots to cure cancer

07:56
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center announces the launch of the Moon Shots Program, an unprecedented effort to dramatically accelerate the pace of converting scientific discoveries into clinical advances that reduce cancer deaths. The program, initially targeting eight cancers, will bring together sizable multidisciplinary groups of MD Anderson researchers and clinicians to mount comprehensive attacks on acute myeloid leukemia/myelodysplastic syndrome, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, melanoma, lung cancer, prostate cancer, and triple-negative breast and ovarian cancers -- two cancers linked at the molecular level. The Moon Shots Program takes its inspiration from President John Kennedy's famous 1962 speech, made 50 years ago this month at Rice University, just a mile from the main MD Anderson campus. "We choose to go to the moon in this decade ... because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win," Kennedy said. "Generations later, the Moon Shots Program signals our confidence that the path to curing cancer is in clearer sight than at any previous time in history," said Ronald A. DePinho, M.D., MD Anderson's president. Six moon shot teams, representing the eight cancers, were selected based on three rigorous criteria: the current state of scientific knowledge across the cancer continuum from prevention to survivorship; the strength and breadth of the assembled team; and the potential for measurable success in reducing cancer deaths. With "intent to cure" as the shared purpose, each moon shot team will focus on personalized treatment; informed prediction and real-time assessment of the effect of those therapies; effective prevention and risk-management strategies; significant advances in diagnostics and early detection; and reduced treatment-related side effects that are detrimental to patients. Request an appointment at MD Anderson by calling 1-877-632-6789 or online at: https://my.mdanderson.org/RequestAppointment?cmpid=youtube_appointment_moonshots

Lung Cancer? Man's cancer tumor turns out to be tiny Playmobil toy he inhaled as a kid - TomoNews

05:39
PRESTON, UNITED KINGDOM — A UK man found out the hard way that the weird, dumb things you do as a kid do come back to haunt you. The Guardian reports that the unnamed 47-year-old went to see a specialist after coughing and feeling sick for a year. Doctors spotted a mass in his lung which they initially thought to be a tumor. But when they went to biopsy the mass, they discovered it wasn't cancer, but a miniature toy cone. When presented with the tiny specimen, the man realized it was his long-lost Playmobil traffic cone, which he claimed to have inhaled as a 7-year-old. Doctors believe the boy's body adapted to the foreign object, and absorbed it into the lining of the lung, where it remained for the next four decades. It's not uncommon for children to accidentally swallow or inhale small objects, but it is pretty darn strange to be feeling the symptoms so long after the actual deed. Still, the old chap is pretty lucky. His cough has nearly cleared, he doesn't have the big C, and he's got his old Playmobil back. Definitely winning at life, at least for now. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news.
