Stacked cargo containers in New Haven's "LEGO" apartments
Christian Salvati of Marengo Structures thinks shipping containers make great building blocks, and in time, he hopes it will become an affordable and quick method of building homes. As full-scale R&D, in 2012, he built Connecticut’s first shipping container homes: a two-story duplex built from six containers. Two years later, he stacked higher using 27 containers to build a 6-unit apartment complex he hopes to rent to students in the New Haven area (the building is wedged between Yale and University of New Haven). While containers are uniform, modular and easily sourced (Salivati buys from a depot in Newark, NJ), the building process is still slower and more expensive than it should be given the lack of codes for this type of building. Salvati thinks that by sharing information, architects and builders can help improve both zoning issues and the currently steep learning curve that prevents containers from becoming a more universal modular alternative. Les "State Park" sont par contre payants (env. 10$ par voiture) mais certains valent le détour! Le meilleur petit déjeuner de tout votre voyage, vous le trouverez surement au Holywood Café sur le Fisherman's Wharf! Pour Alcatraz, pensez a réserver en avance! Conseil : garez votre voiture dans un parking avec mention "special price for early bird" et arrivez avant 8h00. Direction le café puis a pied vers le Pier 33 pour Alcatraz. Le Yosemite est un super parc qui mérite amplement que l'on s'y attarde! Faites au moins une grosse randonnée. Attention a ne pas sous estimer la difficulté, notamment la Upper Yosemite Fall qui surement a été une des plus difficiles de tout notre voyage. N'oubliez pas Glacier Point qui propose un point de vue panoramique sur toute la Yosemite Valley avec en arrière plan les chutes d'eau et le Half-Dome. Idem pour les déserts en été! 48c dans la Vallée de la Mort et 46c au fond du grand Canyon. Grand Canyon: en passant, évitez de faire comme nous si vous n’êtes pas de très grands randonneurs! Plateau point est une petite balade comparé a la descente vers Silver Bridge et Fanthom Ranch. On vous aura prévenu! Personnes sujettes aux vertiges : évitez le Angel's Landing Trail et la Shafer Canyon Road. Pour le reste, c'est que du bonheur !!! Amusez vous et surtout, profitez un maxxx!! Breck's 6-Chair is open
Thanks to recent storms which dropped temperatures for snowmaking and left behind generous amounts of early-season snowfall, Breckenridge Ski Resort will expand its operating footprint to over 520 acres of skiable terrain accessed via eight lifts and select learning carpets by Saturday, November 22. Among the new terrain, the resort plans to open runs across Peaks 8 & 9 allowing guests to access both base areas as well as a triple jump line with a handful of features in Park Lane. Additionally, the Rocky Mountain SuperChair and portions of expert, upper mountain terrain off the 6-Chair open today, Friday, November 21. “We’re pleased to have over 500 acres of skiable terrain ready for guests this weekend,” Breckenridge Vice President of Mountain Operations, Gary Shimanowitz said. “With over 54 inches of new snow in our opening week alone and extremely favorable temperatures for snowmaking, we’re having one of the better early seasons in years.” Peak 9 trail openings will be Silverthorne and King’s Way via the Quicksilver SuperChair as well as Crosscut and lower Sawmill. The Peak 8 SuperConnect will be open to allow back and forth skiable access between Peak 8 and Peak 9 and the Snowflake lift will operate to offer mountain access from that bed base. The Peak 9 base area will operate with full services, including ski & ride school and on-mountain dining at Ten Mile Station and The Maggie. Associated runs surrounding 6-Chair give skiers and riders access to approximately 197 acres of expert terrain on the upper mountain of Peak 8. At this time there will be no access out from the bottom of the lift and guests need to ride the 6-Chair and then ski or ride down Upper Four O’clock in order to return to Peak 8. Guests who wish to access the Peak 7 base area including Sevens restaurant can do so via Fort Mary B from Claimjumper. At this time no additional terrain is open for skiing or riding on Peak 7. Breckenridge Ski Resort requires all skiers and riders to observe all posted signs and warnings. Closed trails may contain hazards due to limited natural snow coverage and snowmaking operations. Please keep off closed trails and out of closed areas for safety reasons.

The June Lake Loop is situated against the west rim of the Great Basin and Range Province, abutting the steep eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada. Rush Creek originates from an alpine watershed just north of the headwaters of the San Joaquin River, and south of the Tuolumne River, then flows northeast, becoming the major tributary to the great inland sea, Mono Lake. June Lake's looped valley, often described as a horseshoe-shaped canyon, was formed by glacial action. The Rush Creek glacier split in two when it encountered the resistant rock of what is now known as Reversed Peak. The main glacier flowed toward the north creating the Rush Creek Canyon. Another glacial branch turned south and east but its flow was impeded and eventually stopped as the granitic bedrock on this southern branch created an uphill path toward the volcanic area of the Mono Craters. When the glacier receded it left behind terminal moraine material in the area now known as Oh! Ridge. A basin which had been carved out just west of the ridge is filled with spring water, creating June Lake and nearby Gull Lake. The overflow from these spring-fed lakes flows back toward the mountain range and thus is named Reversed Creek. Reversed Creek reaches a confluence with Rush Creek and flows through Silver Lake and Grant Lake, completing the "loop" to the Mono Basin. Perched Boulder One notable geologic feature is the perched boulder, a glacial erratic next to the June Lake Fire Station. This boulder, a well-known landmark of the area, is 18 feet tall and weighs 150 tons. It was carried and deposited by glacial action to its present position. June Lake contains several distinct community areas. The main Village is between the southwestern end of June Lake, with the smaller Gull Lake on the northwest. The Village is the commercial core, with a post office, community center, library, restaurants, lodging, stores and offices, as well as mixed residential use. The West Village/Rodeo Grounds area lies on the North and West sides of Gull Lake. These areas are sites of more recent development including a baseball field, condominiums, and some larger homes. Over ninety acres of vacant land in this area are currently involved in a specific plan process. June Mountain Ski Area, adjacent to the Rodeo Grounds property, is owned and operated by Mammoth Mountain LLC under a use permit from the Inyo National Forest. Down canyon and closer to the dramatic eastern scarp of the Sierra Nevada are the Petersen, Williams, and Clark Tracts: then directly at the base of Carson Peak are the Dream Mountain and Silver Lake Meadow areas as well as the Rush Creek Power House. These "down canyon" areas are primarily single-family residential although several commercial nodes exist containing retail, lodging, dining and other services. There are also several outlying inhabited areas which are under lease from the Forest Service. These include the June Lake Junction and Pine Cliff Resort to the northeast of June Lake; Silver Lake Resort; the Silver Lake Recreation Residence Tract; and the Grant Lake Campground and Marina. Although inhabited for thousands of years, Inishark, which lies in the path of the most vicious Atlantic storms, was finally abandoned in 1960 when the last two dozen inhabitants closed the doors to their homesteads for the last time. Most resettled on the mainland. Their cottages are slowly being reclaimed by the elements, and sheep now cross the broken stone hedges of the once lovingly tended fields, which still bear the ghostly ridges of potato beds. St. Leo's Church, open to the sky and named for the island's patron saint, Leo of Inis Airc who lived here some time between the sixth and eighth centuries, cuts a forlorn presence at the heart of the old village. Inishturk is still inhabited, with a permanent population of around 70 people who make their living from farming, fishing and tourism. At the summit is a ruined signal tower dating from the Napoleonic period. A new glass and stone memorial, 'The Tale of the Tongs', a creation of Travis Price III in collaboration with The Catholic University of America's School of Architecture and Planning, commemorates the six family names of the island. Achillbeg, separated from Achill Island by a narrow sound, is also abandoned. The last inhabitants of the small village sandwiched in a narrow valley between the two hills on the island and hemmed in by the sea on either side, departed in 1965. - Thanks to the Clare Island Ferry company for their professional and friendly service.

Moonlight Basin.  A potential world class resort on the brink.
What happens when the real estate model for a ski resort fails? In the case of Moonlight Basin, it's a win for skiers and riders who visit the Montana mountain and it's fully appointed exquisite lodging options and dynamite skiing.. while it remains open. The resort took a loan of nearly $500 million it can not repay. The loan agent was Lehman Brothers, the bankrupt financial institution. As a result, hundreds of exquisite townhouses, condos, mansions, and even log cabins remain unrented and mostly unoccupied. Progress is being made toward securing private investors who will take over the unpaid loan, get Lehman Brothers out of the equation and work with the powers that be at Moonlight Basin to complete it's master plan which includes a Jack Nicklaus designed golf course on the 8000 acre prime real estate. The financial dilemma Moonlight Basin faces translates into a tremendous ski experience for snowsports enthusiasts who take the journey to Moonlight, which stands next to neighbor Big Sky Resort near West Yellowstone in the Gallatin mountain range. The ski hill features about 2000 skiable acres, 4100 vertical, some epic double diamond terrain and dozens of beginning and intermediate trails. The beauty of the region is breathtaking, but since Moonlight Basin has more supply of "The Goods" than demand...prices across the board from lift tickets to lodging are less than comparable ski resorts. There are many theories as to Moonlight Basin's future. Some think it will go the way of Tamarack Resort in Idaho, which shut down operations but eventually found a bank to support a Thursday-Sunday operation. Moonlight Basin of course hopes to find a sympathetic investor to join forces and facilitate it's optimistic plan. Still other believe (and this probably is the leading scenario) that Big Sky will eventually find financing to assume Moonlight Basin and create one giant ski area. East West property management has a stake in MB, so it's possible they'd be interested in becoming a bigger player, and combine forces with the Boyne Corporation that owns Big Sky Mountain Resort. Mid-summer would appear to be decision time.
