This horse was suffering from significant left hind limb lameness. Local anaesthetic placed in the lower hock joints proved this area to be the source of the lameness. Medical treatment of the joints produced disappointing results. Surgical fusion of the joints under general anaesthesia is an alternative way to treat this condition if medical management fails.

This video is a photographic case study on treating equine melanomas with Cannabis Oil, based on a year long treatment of my 16 year old Paso Fino mare, Tori. In August 2016, Tori had so many tumors on her anus and in her rectum that she could only pass single balls of manure and was in pain as she did so and the black tar oozing from those tumors coated her silver tail and legs black. I started daily washing her perineum, drying it and applying a coat of Cannabis Oil to the surface of the skin. The video shows monthly photos taken of the tumors as I applied daily cannabis oil to the surface of her anus. The strain I used is called "Frost" and has 11% THC and 0% CBD. After about a year, it appeared that the tumors were trying to regrow and I started syringing 3-5 ccs of Cannabis Oil into her mouth each day in addition to treating the tumors directly. In January 2018 I switched to using a Cannabis Oil strain called "Swiss" that has 6% THC and 11.7 % CBD. That strain appears to be working even better than Frost, with the combination of THC and CBD being more effective than THC alone. The photos clearly show that the tumors reduced in number and size over the time cannabis was used. It is my hope that veterinary colleges will view this video and undertake research to determine which strains of cannabis and what characteristics of THC and CBD are most effective at treating equine melanomas. If you have questions about Tori's treatment or want copies of these photos, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Update from June 2018: Tori's tumors continue to look good and she continues passing full rectums of manure almost 2 years after it was first proposed to euthanize her for bowel blockage.

The much loved Aussie horse Subzero that won the prestigious Melbourne Cup in 1992, is back to his playful self, thanks to the compassionate efforts of a 69 year old American entrepreneur known as 'Rice Patty', founder of NanaCea. When Australian quarantine officials had barred access to American product Flex Plus, the only supplement to date, able to control the horses debilitating arthritis, the products inventor Rice Patty McPeak, embarked on a rescue mission flying in from the US to save Subzero. Despite reports to the contrary, an effective treatment for the horses arthritis, couldn't be found in Australia. Because of this, Rice Patty brought with her new and improved 'Equine SuperFlex' a further developed form of the supplement made of a special type of stabilized rice bran, that 12 months ago, had brought the horse back from the brink of death. For more information on where you can find such products developed by 'Rice Patty' for both human and equine/animal consumption, please visit www.NanaCea.com

Joint Support, Total Joint Health, Equine Arthritis are very real, often treatable issues with a variety of methods. However, while the retail options have grown from about 20 in 1995, to well over 500 in 2015, the reality is that there is only two types of 'it works' - a) it's masking or blocking the pain & symptoms, or b) it's helping heal the underlying issue, helping the body fix the problem. The majority of the products on the market do 'a' (mask), only a few choose 'b' - the slower, but almost always better and safer route. The challenge is wading through the marketing hype, disinformation, misinformation, and out right lies, so you can get your beloved equine friend the help it needs, and aren't wasting money on stuff that won't help, or could actually make things worse. Learn more about how LEGEND treats joint dysfunction due to synovitis. Every horse takes joint damage when they train. Or compete. “I think the goal for all horse people is to work around joint damage and get it on the front end of things so you’re not having those issues later on in life,” Dakota Griffith, trainer, says. “And I’ve been able to do that with LEGEND.” Treating a synovial problem, the earlier you can intervene with a product that will keep the synovial joint intact before osteoarthritis develops, the better the chances are to prevent any long-term damage to the joint,” Johnnie Copeland, DVM, says. “So that’s one of the number of reasons we use LEGEND in our regiment.“ Elle Young and Laine Ashker, both competitors, want to keep their horses at the top of their game to compete at the highest level. “It takes everything for me to make sure I get where I need to be and I get what I need to get done,” Young says. “And to think about my horse not being at 110 percent is not an option.” “When you’re competing as often as we do every weekend, you don’t want to get stuck on the sidelines,” Ashker says. In this episode of Meet My Neighbor on Yanasa Ama Ranch, we'll be headed over to Black Cat Ranch to learn a little more about Equine PEMF treatments, how it is used, and how it can benefit an injured horse. Black Cat Ranch PEMF practices Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy for Horses, Dogs, Humans, and other animals throughout the Carolina's and Southern States (their travel distance depends on the number of horses or animals desiring treatment in a facility). For more information on Black Cat Ranch visit https://www.facebook.com/blackcatranchpemf PEMF or Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy has been around since the discovery of electricity. The therapy was first adopted in Eastern and Western Europe primarily by veterinarians to help heal race horses. In 2004 PEMF was approved by the FDA as an adjunct to cervical fusion surgery. How Can PEMF Help Your Horse? How Does PEMF Work? Basically, PEMF essentially charges up cell Mitochondria, which are the energy producers of cells. The therapy uses bursts (pulsing) of low-level electromagnetic radiation to heal tissues and bone, stimulate organs, and relieve pain from injury. Is PEMF Safe? Yes. PEMF uses levels of Electromagnetic Fields similar to what your body (or horses body) finds in nature. Most treatments are equivalent to what you would experience during a thunderstorm. So cells are already adopt to deal with it. More About Black Cat Ranch: Black Cat Ranch offers a mobile PEMF therapy for you, your pets, equine or livestock. Serving All of NC and parts of VA & SC. They have information on PEMF from their pictures on their Facebook Page (listed above) or you can check out www.HorsePEMF.com Black Cat Ranch is located a short drive from Sanford, Carthage, Pittsboro, Siler City, Southern Pines, Pinehurst, and Vass. They offer full boarding for equine. About the Meet My Neighbor Series on YouTube: Meet My Neighbor is a new playlist series on YouTube by Yanasa Ama Ranch. Injuries to the sacroiliac joint (SI joint) of a horse are notoriously hard to diagnose. Many horses are never diagnosed at all because one of the symptoms can be as basic as a general decrease in overall performance. A couple of other "symptoms" that Sparrow experienced (and I forget to mention in this video) are: - "behavioral problems" with lifting the OPPOSITE hind leg for the farrier, as it required her to support the entire weight of her hind end on the affected LEFT sacroiliac joint. - you can see a pronounced bump at the highest point of her croup when you look at her from the side. - a reluctance to engage her hindquarters in work. - an attitude shift - she became less agreeable in her workouts.

You asked, we answered! In the first episode of our new monthly series, Ask the Vet, Dr. Lydia Gray and SmartPaker Sarah answer your questions about how to blanket a horse correctly, should you ride in a quarter sheet, what to do about a horse that coughs and sneezes during warm up, whether or not horses can develop immunities to supplements, and what is the best supplement for a young horse with arthritis that shows up mostly in the winter. Have some of your own questions? Ask away! If your question gets is selected to be in one of our Ask the Vet videos, you win a SmartPak Gift Card! How awesome is that!? All you have to do is submit your question on this video or any of our Ask the Vet videos between February 1, 2016, and February 11, 2016, using #askthevetvideo. You can also ask your questions on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or our blog, where you can read all of Dr. Lydia Gray's Ask the Vet articles (http://pak.horse/1TxdXlf)! Make sure to SUBSCRIBE so that you know when the next episode comes out - your question may be featured! Questions answered in this episode: 1. How do you blanket a horse correctly in the winter months? At what temperatures should I move from a light weight to a medium or a heavy? 2. Hello! I rode in a quarter sheet for the first time this winter today. Where I live when I ride it is usually 40-50° F. I usually warm up with it on and take it off... should I keep it on the entire ride or not? Thank you (my horse has a full body clip btw!). 3. I started fully leasing an 11-year-old Paint this spring. For the first ten minutes or so of warming up, he coughs and sneezes constantly, and then he's fine. However, if we stop and walk around for a bit and then start working again, he starts coughing and sneezing. His owner says he's been tested for lots of things, including allergies, and they've come back with nothing. Any suggestions? 4. Can horses develop "immunities" to supplements if fed the same thing for many years? For example, will my horse's joint supplement become less effective over time, requiring her to upgrade to a stronger supplement? (She is only 6-years-old, so it will be a long while before she needs to switch to a senior one!) 5. I have a 5-year-old horse that has slight arthritis on the bottom of her knee. The arthritis shows up in the winter time the most. What supplement do you recommend for arthritis pain?

Dr. Bob Neff, DVM of Fairfield Equine Associates shows us how he performs injections of a steroid into a horse's hock. Hock injections are used to help reduce inflammation in the joint and help horses move with more range of motion. They are intended for horses who are considered high performance horses, either currently or in their past life, and could benefit from such treatment. Consult your vet to see if equine injections is suitable for your horse.

See how LEGEND keeps your senior horse’s joints healthy. Equine arthritis is a very real threat to older horses. That’s why horse owners and trainers use LEGEND to combat aging equine joints. “To keep an older horse going, you have to use measures to help them. And LEGEND is one of those to help their joint health,” says Elle Young, competitor. Laine Ashker, also a competing equestrian, prizes a 17-year-old as her top horse. “He’s been going at the highest level in eventing since he was an eight-year-old. That’s a lot of jumps, that’s a lot of gallops, that’s a lot of trot sets.” And so, to have a horse that’s been going as an eight-year-old to a 17-year-old at the top level is huge. And I have to credit that all to LEGEND. Johnnie Copeland, DVM, appreciates LEGEND’s versatility in administration to senior equine. “It’s always nice to have products that you have confidence in and that you can use in multiple situations and ways. We can use it IV or we can use it interarticular, depending on the circumstance.” For many, pain is the most important factor to deal with as their horses age. “A horse in pain, you would say it’d be as if you were walking on rocks. You’d be short with your step; you wouldn’t be as loose across the ground. With LEGEND, you’re walking across carpet. Totally different,” says Bobby Braswell, trainer. TW Grose, trainer, echoes Bobby’s sentiments toward older horses. He owns a former horse legend himself, and continues to treat him like royalty. “I have a retired 22-year-old gelding. I showed him as a youth. He was a world-champion, high point champion in the country. He has a lot of miles on him. LEGEND is something we give him; makes him a lot more comfortable to where he goes out every day, helps his joints.” IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. For use only in horses. Do not use in horses intended for human consumption. LEGEND 4 mL and LEGEND® Multi dose 20 mL are approved only for I.V. use. LEGEND 2 mL is approved for I.V. and I.A. use. The intra-articular safety of LEGEND Multi Dose with benzyl alcohol has not been evaluated. The safety of LEGEND has not been evaluated in breeding stallions or in breeding, pregnant or lactating mares. Not for use in humans. Keep this and all other drugs out of reach of children. Strict aseptic techniques should be observed when administering by intra-articular injection. Post-Approval Experience: While all adverse reactions are not reported, the following adverse reactions are based on voluntary post-approval reporting for Legend Injectable Solution: Following intravenous use: Occasional depression, lethargy and fever. This video shows how Bowen & Trigger Point Therapy can achieve major relief in arthritic horses in only a few days. This is due to Bowen working with the fascia of the body, so release and lubrication is not only achieved in the muscles, but also on the tendons and ligaments which are placing strain on the pathological joint, as well as aiding in lubricating the joint itself. This video was made to follow the progress of a client's horse who's quality of life was quickly degrading from existing arthritis and ringbone which had been severely aggravated as the cold of Autumn started to set in. She had begun fearing the worst for her old girl and asked for my help. For more information on what we do please visit my website at http://head2hoofbowen.wix.com/equine-bowen-therapy

(Beth) As horse owners we all know that horses will cough here and there and we probably can brush that off. Where we get concerned is where a horse continues to cough or isn't quite themselves and has a cough to go along with it. So, is it a result of infectious disease versus non-infectious disease? With infectious diseases it might be a respiratory infection with a bacteria or a virus with a fever. Might need to have a veterinarian take a peek. (Chris) What are non-infectious causes of coughing? (Beth) Sometimes its exercise or if they are at rest or out in the pasture and they cough. When we talk about non-infectious respiratory disease, we think about inflammatory airway disease with inflammation of the lower airways. Or we can even have a horse that has what we call recurrent airway obstruction or heaves. Often its an age related problem. The inflammatory airway disease is more common in the young performance horse and recurrent airway obstruction or heaves in a mature horse. (Chris) It could be we'd need some further diagnostics, and to consult with a veterinarian. What are some treatments to help with non-infectious issues? (Beth) With the horse that has a persistent cough, its time to have a veterinarian make sure there's not anything underlying that's infectious, because it might require antibiotics. But if its non-infectious, working with a veterinarian for anti-inflammatories is good. Maybe they live in a pen with a round bale and they have some dust exposure. Some medications from a veterinarian can help along with environmental changes. Also try to have clean hay. (Chris) If you have other questions, give us a call here at Kansas State Vet School. I'm Dr. Chris Blevins with Horsin' Around and we'll see you around.

Using the Masterson Method techniques to release tension in the pelvis, groin and stifle points of the horse. The Masterson Method® is an innovative form of equine massage that allows the horse to release deep, accumulated pain and tension in muscles and connective tissue. Through the use of light touch and gentle movement in a relaxed state, and observation of a range of the horse's responses (these visual and palpable responses tell you what the horse's body is feeling), you'll open doors to improved health and performance while enhancing communication with your horse.
