The Tri-4 antenna. In this video, I compare it to the performance of one of my older designs, the Fractal Bowtie. I don't necissarily compare them in terms of distance and power, (even though it is) but rather in frequency range. This is a easy TV antenna to build picks up VHF and UHF .Tested at 60 miles away from TV towers. Air TV channels transmit on frequencies ranging from 170 MHz to 860 MHz. The VHF-Hi band covers 175 to 230 MHz, while UHF covers 470 to 860 MHz. The gap between is used for cable TV. Receiving all these frequencies is difficult when using a single antenna. The Gray-Hoverman antenna has been designed by Doyt R. Hoverman and it was patented in the sixties. His design only covered a part of UHF band. However, with some improvements, the antenna can receive well both the UHF as well as VHF-Hi. This post will show two variants of this antenna that can be used to receive 170 to 230 MHz channels (5 - 12) and a part of UHF between 470 - 720 MHz (21 - 52 channels) with a minimum gain of 5 - 6 dBi. These are the simplest to build. There are however designs that offer a minimum gain of 8 dBi on VHF and 10 dBi on UHF. These antennas can be used for any kind of signal that can be received on the mentioned frequencies: analog TV, DVB-T, DVB-T2, ISDB-T, ATSC.

VHF elements added to a fractal bowtie 4 bay dipole to make a UHF - VHF combination antenna. Does not reduce UHF reception and requires no extra components or switches. Works great for channels RF 7 - 13. VHF elements are 1/4 wavelength in size. For channels RF 2 - 6, 1/8 wavelength sizes may work but I am not able to test it since I don't have those channels in my area. VHF part of this antenna works better when the VHF elements are bent and turned a different direction than the UHF.

This is probably the best HDTV antenna I have ever used. It pulls in just as many channels as my old 12 foot Channel Master! For its size, it is absolutely amazing!!! This antenna is called the Stealth Hawk, and was designed by OTA-Canuk. I'm located in a rural, hilly area at about 1200+ feet elevation and have hills blocking the signals from furthest stations. The mast and antenna peak at about 23 foot. It was insanely cheap to build, about 12 bucks plus some scraps. This works as an indoor antenna as well! I plan on building a version of the Super Stealth Hawk, after I resurrect my 35 foot tower. Fractals work great for attic installations in my experience. They seem to lock in that reception and overcome interference somewhat better than straight elements do. In this upgrade, the work is a bit easier when it comes to bending wire. PVC material is used in place of wood since white PVC is 100% nonconductive and weatherproof as well. Fractal antennas uses a fractal design to maximize the perimeter of the material that can receive and transmit electromagnetic radiation within a given total surface area or volume. Sounds complicated, right.This antenna design grew out of my attempts to build an indoor HDTV antenna using fractal patterns after I had watched a TV show and had read a magazine article on the use of fractal patterns in cell phone antennas, My goal was to design an antenna that not only worked well, but one that was easy to build and could be built from easiliy obtainable materials. The result is an antenna that is somewhat omnidirectional, and performs well receiving digital TV signals at my home from the low end of the VHF high-band (i.e Channel 7 at 174 MHZ) to the high end of the 600 MHz UHF band. First discovered back in 1988 by Nathan Cohen and later published and patented in 1995. A fractal antenna has a few unique attributes as seen in this definition from Wikipedia: "A fractal antenna is an antenna that uses a fractal, self-similar design to maximize the length, or increase the perimeter (on inside sections or the outer structure), of material that can receive or transmit electromagnetic signals within a given total surface area or volume." What exactly does that mean? Well, you need to know what a fractal is. Also from Wikipedia: "A fractal is generally a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole,a property called self-similarity." So basically, a fractal is a geometric shape that repeats and appears over and over no matter how far out or how far in you zoom magnificatio Fractal antennas have been found to be approximately 20% more efficient than normal antennas. Which could be useful. Especially if you want to make your own TV antenna to pick up over the air digital or high definition video, increase your cellular range, wifi range, FM or AM radio reception, and so on. Most cell phones already have built in fractal antennas. If you noticed in the past few years that cell phones no longer have antennas on the outside. That is because they have a internal fractal antenna etched on a circuit board which allows them to get better reception and pick up more frequencies such as bluetooth, cellular, and WIFI all from one antenna at the same time "A fractal antenna's response differs markedly from traditional antenna designs, in that it is capable of operating with good-to-excellent performance at many different frequencies simultaneously. Normally standard antennas have to be "cut" for the frequency for which they are to be usedand thus the standard antennas only work well at that frequency. This makes the fractal antenna an excellent design for wideband and multiband applications." The trick is to design your fractal antenna to resonate at what ever center frequency you wish to receive. Which means it will look different and be sized different depending on what you want to receive. A little math can be used to figure this out. (Or a online calculator) In my example, I am going to make a simple one but you may want to make a more elaborate one. The more elaborate the better. I will use a spool of 18 Gauge solid core wire to make a antenna as an example but you could go as far as to etch your own circuit boards for aesthetic reasons, to make it smaller, or more elaborate with more resolution and resonance. I am going to use the example of making a TV antenna for digital or high definition reception for over the air broadcasts. It is easier to work with these frequencies and they fall around half a foot to a few feet in length for half wavelengths of the signal. I am also going to base it off a common dipole antenna for simplicity and cheapness of parts for VHF. For UHF you may want to add a director or reflector which will also make it more direction dependent. VHF is direction dependent as well but instead of pointing directly at the TV station like UHF you want VHF rabbit ears (dipole antenna) to be perpendicular to the TV station. But there is a little more design to that. I want to keep this as simple as possible as it is already a very complex subject.

For those living in Metropolitan areas, a simple loop fashioned around the base of a milk or water jug will work just as well as more complex designs. Apply double sided carpet tape to the back and mount against the wall or other support. I was able to receive 36 digital UHF signals in my area. Unfortunately, several of them were propaganda broadcasts of the religiously insane. After editing out the unwanted channels, we now have free access that is very useful should the cable or satellite service go down. Also, a few channels available over the air are not available with our cable service. Note that part of the transmission line is the 3" ends of the 24 gauge wire between the center (where soldered) and the outer edge of the jug. Keep the spacing of 5/16" between these two wires to maintain the 300 ohm impedance.

Also, contract disagreements between local cable operators and local broadcasters can mean that major networks may not be available via cable TV in your area.Access to out-of-town channels: With the right equipment and reception conditions, some viewers may even be able to receive out-of-town channels, some of which may carry sports programs that are locally blacked out. TV signal transmission is considered to be "line of sight." Getting reliable DTV reception beyond the curvature of the earth (approximately 70 miles) is difficult. So, the first step is to locate the transmitters for your local stations. There is no one magic antenna or antenna type that will deliver excellent TV reception in every location. The main factors determining reception are the distance and direction from the TV station transmitters to your home. Other factors include the transmitter's power and the height of its tower, the terrain between the tower and your antenna, and the size and location of any large buildings in the path of the transmission. If you live within a few miles of the transmitter, and the signal path is relatively unobstructed, you may be able to get adequate reception using a small set-top indoor antenna. But as you move farther away, getting usable signal strength becomes trickier. This is where careful antenna selection and installation become essential. Indoor antennas are generally small, designed to be placed on or near your TV. Outdoor antennas tend to be significantly larger and are intended for roof- or attic-mounting. In general, the larger an antenna's surface area is, the stronger the signal it will provide. The relative strength of the signal an antenna can deliver to a tuner is referred to as "gain" and is measured in decibels (dB). The higher the dB rating, the greater the gain. When you're aiming the antenna, use a compass to ensure your antenna is accurately and precisely oriented toward the signal source. At this stage, it's best to have a helper who can check picture quality and relay the information to you. (Most, but not all HDTVs and HDTV tuners include an onscreen signal strength meter.) Be sure to check the picture on all channels you want to receive before securing the antenna in place.If you plan to use an antenna in addition to a digital satellite TV system, you have a couple of options. One fairly easy solution is to attach a "clip-on" antenna to your satellite dish. Such antennas have built-in "diplexers" that combine the satellite and antenna signals onto a single cable, which can eliminate the need to run new cable. You'll need to install a diplexer at each satellite receiver to provide separate connections to the "Satellite In" and "Antenna In" jacks. A clip-on antenna usually performs better than an indoor antenna, but not as good as a larger outdoor antenna. Attic installationCompared to roof-mounting, installing an antenna in your home's attic has several appealing advantages: installation is much easier, the antenna is hidden from view, and the antenna and connections are not directly exposed to harsh weather. The main disadvantage of attic-mounting is poorer reception. As an example, a single layer of asphalt shingles over a standard plywood roof creates a 30%-50% reduction in signal strength. Attic-mounting can be an effective option in areas where strong signals are present. Several of my firends and family and neighbors are now using this. I now get ALL of the local brodcast channels crystal clear - some that I could not get before at all (in particular 9 - PBS and 11 - CW) ! It works best for me when the rabbit ear elements are each about 18" long. I am not sure of the range of this antenna - I am about 30 miles from the local broadcast towers. I have recently changed the construction method of the new antennas that I make for friends. I now use 12 Gauge copper wire and solder the connections together.
