In fact, this is typical … And what I discovered during the next few months when researching this topic, because I was new to it back then,... Is that the REAL cause of high cholesterol is the negative change in your hormones, due to aging. It happens to women almost instantly, because of menopause… While more gradually with men. And this explains why young people in their teens and 20’s …. eat junk, don’t rest enough or even exercise and yet, their cholesterol levels are still healthy … This is because they have good hormone levels, which quickly helps eliminate excess cholesterol and more importantly, repairs your organs and blood vessels. But don’t worry, or lose hope and think you can’t fix this because you’re getting older …I’ll show you in a minute that you can easily and quickly fix your cholesterol problems, naturally … without drugs, restrictive diets or crazy exercise programs. So keep watching… The “High Cholesterol” Myth However, the other problem with these cholesterol lowering drugs is that they only focus on “lowering cholesterol”. You don’t want that. Cholesterol has many benefits. Low cholesterol can be just as bad as high. Low cholesterol causes depression, low sex drive and earlier death. What you want to do is improve all of your lipids and the ratios. And most people don’t know, but 80% of your cholesterol is made IN your liver!... it’s NOT from the foods you eat. This is why diet changes don’t usually make a big improvement. Cholesterol is an essential component of all animal cells, but TOO MUCH cholesterol IN THE BLOOD is a high-risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. Cholesterol levels are measured in a blood test known as lipid panel or lipid profile. This test typically reports: total cholesterol; LOW-density lipoprotein, LDL, also known as “bad” cholesterol; HIGH-density lipoprotein, HDL, or “good” cholesterol; and triglycerides. A desirable profile includes LESS than 200mg/dL of TOTAL cholesterol, with LESS than 100mg/dL of LDL and MORE than 40mg/dL of HDL. The body obtains cholesterol in 2 ways: from foods of animal origin, and its own endogenous production. Usually, cholesterol levels are kept in check by a negative feedback control. LOW levels of INTRACELLULAR cholesterol INDUCE its own production, while HIGH cholesterol levels INHIBIT it. It is noteworthy, however, that this regulation applies to the concentration of cholesterol INSIDE the CELLS, NOT in the BLOOD. The HIGH prevalence of HIGH BLOOD cholesterol worldwide suggests that this control mechanism is NOT sufficient to maintain healthy cholesterol levels when challenged by a number of factors, including poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, obesity, diabetes, and aging. In addition, some people have an INHERITED condition called “familial hypercholesterolemia”, FH, that causes very HIGH levels of LDL, the “bad“ cholesterol, at a young age. Left untreated, patients are likely to have heart attacks in their 40s or 50s. LDL is basically a vehicle that transports cholesterol from the liver to peripheral cells so it can be used in the cell membrane. Peripheral cells TAKE UP LDL by endocytosis, using their LDL receptor, which binds to a protein ligand on LDL surface. Most cases of FH are caused by a MUTATION in the LDL receptor gene. A defective LDL receptor REDUCES LDL uptake, leaving MORE LDL in the circulation while the cells are DEFICIENT in cholesterol. LOW INTRAcellular cholesterol levels induce FURTHER production of endogenous cholesterol in the liver, eventually causing even HIGHER levels of circulating LDL. One copy of the mutated gene is enough to cause high cholesterol. The condition is therefore inherited in an autosomal DOMINANT manner. A parent with an altered gene has a 50% chance of passing it to a child. If both parents have FH, each child has a 50% chance of having FH, a 25% chance of NOT having FH, and a 25% chance of having TWO copies of the mutated gene, called HOMOZYGOUS FH. Without treatment, homozygous FH patients may have heart attacks in their 20s and may not survive past the age of 30. Treatments for high cholesterol must start with life style changes such as healthy diets and physical exercise. On top of that, some people may require medications to lower cholesterol. These drugs INHIBIT cholesterol production, intestinal absorption, or reabsorption in the form of bile. Homozygous FH patients usually require more DRASTIC treatment measures which include a procedure called LDL APHERESIS. In this procedure, the blood is diverted through a FILTRATION device where LDL is REMOVED before the remaining plasma and blood cells are returned to the body. The procedure is repeated weekly or biweekly.

Drinks to Lower Cholesterol. High levels of bad cholesterol and total cholesterol increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Total cholesterol takes into account levels of both low-density lipoprotein, or bad cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein, or good cholesterol. According to the Mayo Clinic, your diet plays a critical role in reducing cholesterol levels. Adding particular beverages to your diet may be beneficial. Green Tea Green tea contains the highest levels of antioxidants known as polyphenols. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, several studies show that this beverage can lower LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol levels. It also boosts levels of HDL cholesterol, which sweeps bad cholesterol from your arteries. Researchers believe that green tea’s polyphenols inhibit absorption of cholesterol in the intestines and enhance its excretion from your body. Berry Juice Berries help reduce blood cholesterol levels, but some are more effective than others. In a study conducted by the University of California at Davis, researchers found that fresh berries significantly decreased LDL cholesterol. Blackberries were the most effective, followed by red raspberries, blueberries and strawberries. More research is needed to determine the amount of berries or juice people should consume to lower cholesterol. However, drinking more berry juice on a regular basis may be beneficial. Tart Cherry Juice Tart cherries are loaded with antioxidants that provide several benefits, including reducing cholesterol levels. Dosing obese teens with vitamin D shows no benefits for their heart health or diabetes risk, and could have the unintended consequences of increasing cholesterol and fat-storing triglycerides. These are the latest findings in a series of Mayo Clinic studies in childhood obesity. Seema Kumar, M.D., a pediatric endocrinologist in the Mayo Clinic Children’s Center, has been studying the effects of vitamin D supplementation in children for 10 years, through four clinical trials and six published studies. To date, Dr. Kumar’s team has found limited benefit from vitamin D supplements in adolescents. The latest study, Effect of Vitamin D3 Treatment on Endothelial Function in Obese Adolescents, appears online in Pediatric Obesity. “After three months of having vitamin D boosted into the normal range with supplements, these teenagers showed no changes in body weight, body mass index, waistline, blood pressure or blood flow,” says Dr. Kumar. “We’re not saying the links between vitamin D deficiency and chronic diseases don’t exist for children—we just haven’t found any yet.”

There is a concern that young people are not keeping track of their cholesterol. While one in four young adults is at risk for high cholesterol, a majority aren't tested for he LDL levels, which is the "bad" cholesterol. Yet, fewer than half are screened. Triglycerides can build up on the walls of your arteries and raise your risk for having a stroke, heart attack or developing heart disease. Becky Captain, RN, BC, FNP-C, nurse practitioner with Cardiovascular Consultants of the St. Luke's Mid America Heart Institute, explains how lowering your triglyceride levels can benefit your cardiovascular health. Triglycerides are a fatty substance within the blood stream (bad cholesterol). They often come from the things we eat: starches, carbohydrates, and the simple sugars consumed on a regular basis. Triglycerides can be lowered by decreasing these items from the diet, raising activity and aerobic exercise most days of the week, and by increasing the amount of omega-3 fish oils consumed on a daily basis. Becky Captain, a cardiac also explains several new insights in plaque development and answers many questions regarding coronary heart disease. Today we know that plaque starts inside the lining of the artery wall before protruding into the artery and eventually blocking blood flow. Plaque in the artery is much like a zit, in that it becomes inflamed, festers, and will eventually burst. When it bursts it will explode into the interior of the artery. This burst is what causes cardiac attack or death. It is important to have all the risk factors under control in order to prevent the plaque from bursting. Regular aerobic exercise is the number one way to ensure you have a thick cap over your plaque. This thick cap will help keep the plaque from bursting, and keep you away from risk of cardiac problems. If you suffer from heart risk factors, it is strongly recommended that you see a health care provider. A cardiac scan may be necessary in order to determine if you have calcified plaque deposits in your heart arteries. An angioplasty or stent or open-heart surgery, you have plaque in your arteries. Familial hypercholesterolemia results from mutations in 1 of 3 genes: LDL receptor, ApoB100, or PCSK9.
