This is because the foods we eat can affect are blood pressure either positively or negatively. Having high blood pressure can also increase the risk of having other health complications, such as stroke and heart disease. When it comes to high blood pressure, knowing what not to eat is just as important as knowing what to eat, as some foods can elevate your blood pressure more than others. Lets discuss some foods that you should avoid if you want to be conscious of your blood pressure. 1. Processed deli and lunch meats should be avoided for high blood pressure. This is because they are high in sodium content. A diet that is high in sodium is bad for blood pressure and your heart. Sine these deli meats are often seasoned and preserved with salt to last longer, they are loaded with sodium. In only a two-ounce serving of some lunch meats, there can be as much as 600 milligrams of sodium, maybe even more, when the daily recommended is 1500 milligrams of sodium. 2. Although they may seem like a healthy choice and do contain vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, canned tomato sauced can be problematic for those with high blood pressure. Again, this is because most canned tomato sauces are packed with sodium. Just one serving of tomato sauce can include 100’s of milligrams of sodium, which can be troublesome for those individuals with high blood pressure. 3. Red meat such as fattier cuts of steak and ground beef should often be avoided by those individuals with high blood pressure. All healthy diets contain very low levels of saturated and trans-fats. When we eat foods that are high in both saturated and trans fats, it is bad for are blood vessels, heart and blood pressure. Steaks and ground beef often contain high levels of saturated and trans fats, with some steaks containing a full days worth of fat. As well, they are often loaded with sodium, which makes them even worse for our blood pressure. 4. Alcohol should also be avoided if you have high blood pressure. Consuming alcohol with actively cause your blood pressure to elevate. As well, drinking alcohol damages the walls of the blood vessels while also increasing the risks of heart and other health complications such as stroke and obesity. 5. Many individuals love and enjoy eating bacon. However, there is more than one reasons to stay away from this food if you have high blood pressure. Bacon has very few quality vitamins, minerals and nutrients for our bodies. As well, only a small serving of bacon can add a lot of fat to your daily diet. It is not rare to see well over 10 grams of fat in only a couple of sliced of bacon, with most of this fat being saturated or trans fat. Bacon isn’t just high in fat, but it is also high in sodium and cholesterol as well. 6. Lastly, donuts should be avoided if you have high blood pressure. Donuts are packed with calories, fat and sugar, all of which have negative effects on our blood pressure. However, don’t go there yet because most people, including doctors, mistakenly consume less salt to lower blood pressure. However, low-salt diets typically don’t make much of a difference. What does make a big difference is lowering sugar in your diet and more specifically, “high fructose corn syrup” In a recent study in the journal Open Heart (2), the authors write: “Evidence from epidemiological studies and experimental trials in animals and humans suggests that added sugars, particularly fructose, may increase blood pressure and blood pressure variability, increase heart rate and myocardial oxygen demand, and contribute to inflammation, insulin resistance and broader metabolic dysfunction. Thus, while there is no argument that recommendations to reduce consumption of processed foods are highly appropriate and advisable, the arguments in this review are that the benefits of such recommendations have less to do with sodium—minimally related to blood pressure and perhaps even inversely related to cardiovascular risk—and more to do with highly-refined carbohydrates and sugars." The Problem Started In The 1970s Food and beverage manufacturers began switching their sweeteners from sucrose (table sugar) to corn syrup in the 1970s when they discovered that High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) was far cheaper to use in their products. In fact, HFCS is the #1 source of calories in America!!!( 3) It’s found in almost everything you can think of. More specifically, in sodas and fruit juices. But also in many pre-packaged foods. This also includes “healthy sugars” sweetened with agave. My Proven “Prescription” and Recommendation For You You must do your best to limit and eliminate all HFCS and to do this, make sure you read labels. Again, the LESS pre-packaged the food, the better. Limit your TOTAL fructose to 25 grams or less, that’s about 100 calories daily. This includes the natural fructose found in fruits. If you are already suffering from high blood pressure or signs of insulin resistance like diabetes, overweight and high cholesterol, you should be particularly careful to limit your fructose, including that from whole fruits, to 15 grams per day or less. That’s about 60 calories daily. So there you have it. Focus more on limiting your sugars, this includes fruit sugar, fructose … and especially “high fructose corn syrup” which is found in most pre-packaged foods, especially sodas and fruit juices. Sugar and its effects on our overall health have been discussed in the news quite often as of late. Those individuals who are overweight are at a higher risk of developing the disease. It is also important to keep in mind that sugar has little to no nutritional value as well. It is often recommended that women eat no more than 6 teaspoons of sugar and men no more than 9 teaspoons per day. 4. Drinking alcohol in excess should also be avoided for hypertension. Consuming too much alcohol has now been associated with high blood pressure. In fact, studies have shown that drinking too much alcohol at a time can cause a temporary spike in blood pressure. As well, drinking alcohol in excess for a period of time can cause long-term increase in blood pressure. Not only that, but since alcohol is metabolized by the liver, it can lead to weigh gain, which again can increase the risk of hypertension. 5. Lastly, canned soup should be avoided for hypertension. Although simple and easy to make, this food choice could have negative effects of our blood pressure. Often marketed or though to be a healthy food choice, these soups are loaded with sodium.
