Industrial Reclaimed Dining Table with Minimal Tools

07:59
You can make a table top like this using only hand planes and a skill saw (plus clamps a hammer and glue). You need a welder, drill and angle grinder to do the metal work, or you could find other options for the base. Thank you Stanley Tools for the awesome No. 62 low angle jack plane. It is a must-have plane. If you buy one, tell Stanley I sent you ;-) http://www.stanleytools.com/ The music is from a live recording I made with my short-lived fusion band, "the Tim Sway 3" about 10 years ago. It features Tobey on drums and Michael Connolly on guitar. Reclaimed Cypress Dining Table Top | Hybrid Hand Tool/Power Tool Woodworking

11:28
In this video, I use some wood that was given to me to make a reclaimed cypress dining table top. The process is pretty straightforward. The boards were planed and given to me by a friend. I chose the best sections from those boards to get the length and width needed for my table top. Then, I cut the pieces to length, straightened/jointed the edges with a Stanley 8c jointer plane, and then, I glued everything up in sections, using cauls to keep everything flat. After that, I went through the process of flattening the overall top using a scrub plane, my Stanley 5c, and then my Woodriver 4 1/2 smoothing plane. I didn't go crazy on the flattening, and in the end I used a power sander to really knock down the high spots and remove tear out because of the really tricky grain. After that, I mixed some stains to get a color combination I liked and applied a few coats of it. Then, I did 2 coats of wipe on poly, and two coats of paste wax, that I buffed out with a cloth. Then, I just swapped out the tops by removing the screws holding the old top down, and placing the new top and securing it with the same screws. In all, it was about 2 day's work, maybe 8 total hours. And well worth it! We are VERY pleased with the result. I hope this inspires you to maybe think out of the box if you need a new this or that. Rather that getting/making a whole new item, maybe you can simple replace, modify, or swap out some of the parts to give it a fresh look. Thanks so much for watching! Coffee Table - Reclaimed Timber

10:10
I received these timbers in the summer and they have been taking up a lot of room in my shop. I decided to use a few of them to make a new coffee table for my living room. I was limited by the lengths of timber and came up with this design that gave me a really chunky looking table while minimizing the waste. I wish the table could have been a little wider, but overall I am happy with the design and it looks great in place. Estimated weight of the table is 175 pounds. The wood is douglas fir and it was destined for the fire pit. These are leftovers from a new building that was constructed at a nearby ski hill. I cut the timbers to length using a beam saw from my friends at Windsor Plywood Sherwood Park. If you're local, check them out!https://www.windsorplywood.com/location/sherwood-park/ Thanks Colin! I got the sides of the pieces parallel to each other with some hand planing. They're not perfectly square, but them butt up to each other quite nicely. I then drilled some 3/8" holes to accept some dowels for alignment while gluing. There is so much surface area for the glue that the dowels aren't needed for strength. I drilled all the way through one board into the board under it so the pins would be perfectly aligned and you can't see them from the outside edges. Anywhere that there was a check (crack) I stabilized it with a Dutchman (bowtie). I used my X-Carve to cut out a template and the Dutchmen. I roughed out the holes with a flush trim bit in a router and squared the corners with some chisel work. All checks, top and bottom, were stabilized so this thing is solid now!. The Dutchmen are made out of cherry. I smoothed the top and sides a little. Not too much since I wanted a unique look. Then I flipped the top over, marked out where the base would sit and routed a shallow socket so the top/ base can mate up and not slide around. After a lot of sanding to get everything smooth and reduce the risk of splinters I applied 3 coats of General Finishes Arm-R-Seal. It's an oil based finish that stinks to high heaven and looks amazing. I will also apply a little Briwax in a month or so once the finish is completly cured. I can barely lift the top by myself so I don't have any fears of it floating away. It's just held in place by the pull of the earths gravity. =========================================== - Instagram - http://instagram.com/dpmakestuff - Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/dpmakestuff - Plans - http://www.dpmakestuff.com =========================================== = Links To Tools Used = DeWalt Grinder: http://amzn.to/2Eh5hvs Flapper Wheel (similar): http://amzn.to/2D2GUCG Beam Saw: http://amzn.to/2D2RrxD Small Router: http://amzn.to/2F8nkFo Flush Trim Bit: http://amzn.to/2D19wMk Long Drill Bit: http://amzn.to/2F5NHMp Wooden Mallet: http://amzn.to/2gLRJ4I Ruler: http://amzn.to/2bOARY4 Titebond Glue: http://amzn.to/1TmiBAs General Finish: http://amzn.to/2CylKv8 Briwax: http://amzn.to/1JKB1dU Chisels: http://amzn.to/2w5fKpm Panel Clamps: http://amzn.to/2j3IGNB F Clamps: http://amzn.to/2gL4lJy =========================================== = Bookmark these to support the channel = - Amazon - http://amzn.to/2ezs5zq - Amazon Canada - http://amzn.to/2vVrz1m =========================================== = Shop Equipment = Rockler Stuff: http://amzn.to/2bYUGJf Saw Stop: http://amzn.to/2ctLWdP Band Saw: http://amzn.to/2c72OZN Lathe: http://amzn.to/2e9IjMN X Carve CNC: https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve =========================================== Feeling like sending me a letter, stickers or crisp 100 dollar bill? Flatten wood without a jointer - timelapse - Live edge desk build PART 2

Flatten wood without a jointer. This video is timelapse footage of my flattening a live edge slab with hand planes. In this video I flatten the bottom of my live edge Spotted Gum slab after previously flattening the top in an earlier video. This is the second video in a series of videos I am producing while building my own personal Spotted Gum live edge desk. I will be sharing how to information, tips and tricks and hand and power woodworking skills within each video. I uploaded the first installment of my live edge desk build last week, and one of the comments that I received suggested that I should have done a timelapse video of the planing process. It was a great idea, so this is what I have done in this video while flattening the bottom of the Spotted Gum slab. link to original video: https://youtu.be/UjwfSzj7lCI Some details about about the Spotted Gum slab. Build It | Live Edge Slab Table

09:18
Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva and host Kevin O’Connor build a console table using a maple slab with a live edge on it. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 2 days Cost: $300 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Building a Live Edge Slab Table: Track saw Hammer Chisel Grinder Palm sander Clamps Router Drill Shopping List: Live edge slab Hairpin legs 80-120 grit sandpaper 320 grit sandpaper Wood glue Scrap wood to use for rails and jig Wood screws Cheap paintbrush Rags Amber shellac Tung Oil Steps: 1. Before doing any work, determine the orientation of the table. Decide whether the live edge should face up or face down, see which face of the slab will look nicest on top, etc. For decorative tables, Tom likes having the live edge face up so it can be really celebrated. For more functional tables, like a dining room table, Tom likes the live edge down so there’s no gap between the flat surface of the table and the person sitting at the table. Mark the sides in the middle that will need to be cut. 2. Lay the slabs on a workbench with the sides you plan to cut facing the outside of the table. Cut straight edges on both sides of each slab with the track saw. 3. Put the slabs back in the correct orientation to check the size. 4. Remove the bark from the live edge using a hammer and chisel. 5. Once the bark is off, smooth out the edges with a grinder. 6. Sand the live edges with the palm sander. Do a few passes, starting with the rough sandpaper and work up to a smoother one. 7. Generously apply a coat of wood glue to both straight edges of the slabs and clamp the pieces together to dry. 8. Once the glue has dried, cut the rough edges on the short sides of the table with a track saw. 9. Sand the top of the table until the glue joint is perfectly blended. 10. Flip the table upside down and mark the desired location for the legs. 11. Cut two pieces of scrap wood to equal size and height and clamp them to the workbench around the tabletop. 12. Make a jig using the scrap wood to hold a router that’s wide enough to slide across the two rails. 13. Determine the appropriate depth to set the router by placing the jig over the four marks for the legs. Lower the router to the deepest point on the four marks. 14. Use the router to cut out four even sections based on the marks. 15. Drill holes in the table for the four legs. Then, screw the legs into the drilled holes with the wood screws. 16. Flip the table right side up on its legs. Apply a coat of amber shellac with the paintbrush to seal it. Let the shellac dry. 17. Lightly sand the table with the 320 grit sandpaper. 18. Apply three coats of tung oil to the table with a rag. Be sure to put the rag in a bucket of water when you’re finished. Let it dry overnight. 19. Apply three more coats of tung oil. Resources: Tom recommends locating a local lumber yard or mill to find live edge slabs. A quick Internet search should help you identify the one closest to you. Give them a call, talk about the project you’d like to do, and see what types of wood they have. Tom and Kevin used a slab of maple from The Rustic Wood Shop (https://therusticwoodshop.space/). For a more modern look, Tom ordered hairpin metal legs to attach to the bottom of the table. He used the 48” I-Semble Hairpin Table Legs, available at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware (http://www.rockler.com/). To adhere the two boards together, Tom used wood glue, manufactured by Gorilla Glue (https://www.gorillatough.com/). Flattening a live edge slab with hand planes - Desk part 1

16:07
Learn how to flatten a live edge slab by hand using hand planes. In this video I go over the steps to flatten timber by hand using hand planes and hand tools. This is the first video in a series of videos I am producing while building my own personal Spotted Gum live edge desk. I will be sharing how to information, tips and tricks and hand and power woodworking skills within each video. The live edge slab of Spotted Gum that I am using is simply amazing, though it is incredibly hard, dense and incredibly figured. Three things which makes hand planing A LOT of work. Flattening a live edge slab with hand planes took its toll on my body. My arms were very sore the day after. Finishing a STUNNING Claro Walnut Dining Table Top Live Edge Slab with a Hand Applied Oil Finish

04:30
www.taylordonsker.com This video shows my current technique for finishing a slab from start to finish. The table has already been sanded to 400 grit and we are applying a hard oil/wax finish by hand. Using a Kodak squeegee dramatically reduces excess finish and allows me to spread the finish evenly across the table. Several minutes and multiple clean cotton rags are subsequently used to remove excess finish and buff the surface of the table top.

Get your hands on the OFFICIAL WoodWorkLIFE T Shirt https://tinyurl.com/y7m5besg A client commissioned this table to be similar to one they saw in a Restoration Hardware catalog. RH typically focuses on the industrial modern aesthetic and whenever the catalog comes in it serves as a great source of inspiration. Making a reclaimed oak dining bench

04:42
Full details at: https://woodwork.cooperjason.com/rustic-reclaimed-oak-bench-hand-planed-top/ I was asked by a friend to make a reclaimed oak dining bench to match a dining table they bought when stationed in Europe. The table was made of reclaimed oak and had a rustic, hand planed (or hand scraped) texture running across the grain. Get update notifications via email: http://eepurl.com/dC7WBL I sourced the reclaimed oak from an Iowa farm that had salvaged, rough cut oak 2x4’s that were originally from some sort of shipping frame and had been lying around for a couple decades. You can see their original condition at the very beginning of the video. The first step was to clean them up and get them straight and square. I built a straightening jig and used hand planes, but did use a planer to get them to a consistent thickness. The video does not show the process of gluing up the top or blanks for the legs. I did not think to film this until I had already done so and created the rustic, hand planed texture on the top. To get the desired texture to match the existing table, I took an old block plane that I picked up at a garage sale and ground about a 3-4 inch radius on the blade. After repeated sharpening, it worked pretty well. Since this was old, reclaimed oak, the resulting texture using the curved plane, exposed insect trails, and chip out from planing across the grain is quite satisfying and begs to be touched. Matching the finish was a real challenge as the table obviously had some sort of tinted varnish instead of a typical stain/varnish finish. I ended up carefully staining the oak first, and then using a tinted poly to better match the table and even out the color a bit as the porous grain (early wood) of oak soaks up more stain than the dense grain (late wood). DIY Dining Table Made w/ Reclaimed Gym Bleachers - So Much Gum & Butts | Builds

11:06
Get your hands on the OFFICIAL WoodWorkLIFE T Shirt https://tinyurl.com/y7m5besg I make a new kitchen / dining table out of reclaimed bleachers from a local gym, scraping off the gum and graffiti and everything. This is a nice rustic yet modern simple table, out of some unique reclaimed wood. Special thanks to my sponsors at TrueTrac, check out their website and enter code WWL10 for 10% your order. www.TrueTracSaw.com In this video I used the: Pro 8ft combo kit https://www.truetracsaw.com/collections/complete-universal-saw-kits/products/truetrac-8-combo-kit and the TrueTrac Dado Jig https://www.truetracsaw.com/products/truetrac-dado-jig How to Install Breadboard ends on a tabletop https://youtu.be/OFBwIeF-Cq0 About 6 months ago a buddy of mine called me after tearing out the bleachers in an old St. Louis Middle school (I think it used to be a high school) I went over there and rifled through the stacks of old bleachers, a lot of it was construction pine, but just enough appeared to be old growth Douglas Fir. With the tight grain, this old doug fir was really dimensionally stable, this lumber would be perfect for a dining room table. So I reclaimed what I could from the stacks loaded it in my truck and let it sit for about 6 months before I started work on this table. I couldn't believe how much graffitti and bubble gum was on this stuff but there was good wood under there. In this video I show you how to build a table out of reclaimed bleachers. A table build should be on everyone's woodworking bucket list, it is one of the few things EVERYONE could build that will be the centerpiece of your home and last a lifetime. I Make a Router Sled Wood Planer to Flatten Wood Slabs and Lumber using a Simple DIY Router jig

16:37
I make a Router Sled Wood Planer, to flatten the top of logs I had ripped lengthwise in half freehand with a chainsaw. If you don't have a jointer or a planer and you need to flatten large wood slabs or difficult to flatten lumber or logs, building a simple DIY router sled could be the answer. A router is bolted to a sled that rides along two parallel rails that are attached to the sides of the frame with clamps, I have made this wood router planer sled from materials I had in the workshop. Cheap and simple! This router jig worked very well for me, and I am looking forward to flattening some large wood slabs, and workbench tops, It is easy to move and set up I think it is going to get used quite a bit in the future. I am using a 1/2" Shank 2-1/4" Diameter Bottom Cleaning Router Bit to flatten this lumber. NOTE, The Rustic table video I mention in this video has not been uploaded as yet. I am still building the table and will get the video up as soon as I can. Thank you. (If you are not a subscriber and want to know when I upload it, write TABLE in the comments and I will send you a link to the video as a reply when I get it finished.) This table turned out to be so nice I had to share it, never planned on making a video but after it was done I compiled the pics and video I'd taken during the process and threw it together. Lots of detail missing from this video, but once again I did not plan on making this video so much was not filmed, I would be happy to answer any questions or comments.

This is a quick run down of one way to go from rather large Walnut slabs to a beautiful dining table top. By using large vintage woodworking machinery and new world wood working tools I take two 22'' wide 2.5'' thick Walnut slabs from rough raw lumber to a soon to be dining table top. Help support me! Live-Edge Cedar Sofa Table Build | Hand Tool Woodworking

21:45
A few months ago, a friend of mind gave me a HUGE haul of wood, including a gorgeous live-edge cedar slab. Truthfully, I'm not terribly good at thinking out of my own little design box, so I couldn't come up with a good way to use this slab. In fact, I almost cut off the knotty end. Thankfully, my mom saw the slab one day and commented about how much she loved it. Since I am waiting on a load of walnut to acclimate to my shop before I begin work on a walnut side board, I decided to make my mom this sofa table, and man did it not disappoint. It's a very simple design with a few complexities. It's a simple, tapered leg shaker-style table with mortise and tenon joinery for the apron rails. However, to make the top appear to be floating, you need some sort of support structure to lift it off the table carcass. So, I used tapered, sliding dovetails to affix the supports to the apron rails, and then I used regular sliding dovetails to attach the top to the support. All in all, it wasn't a hard project, but it did take some thinking, planning, and a LOT of planing! Also, I did it with almost all hand tools; the only power tool I used was my bandsaw to trim the leg blanks down to square and then to cut the curves on the supports. In total, it was about 5 minutes of work on the band saw. Sorry for all you purists out there :) Here's the article from Fine Woodworking where I got my inspiration: https://www.finewoodworking.com/readerproject/2017/11/13/live-edge-hall-table-mirror I didn't get any plans or anything. I just took the picture, and then I made that design work for what I had. I really hope you've enjoyed watching me and my mom make this live-edge cedar sofa table. Thanks so much for watching! Dining Room Table Part 3

10:30
In this video I construct the table apron, cross supports, and the stretcher for my dining room table. The apron rails and cross supports help to keep the table top flat and offers points of attachment with expansion washers and screws. The stretcher connects the arched rails and offers lateral stability. The apron rails consist of 2 parts; the long apron, and the apron extensions. The aprons are joined to the top supports of the leg assemblies using 2 domino tenons at each joint for a total of 16 domino tenons. The 2 cross supports are attached to the aprons using sliding dovetails. This was done using a handheld router and a guide track, and a router table. The domino mortises pass through the top support and the double tenons of each table leg. Therefore, the domino tenons act as pins, preventing the leg from being pulled out of its respective joint. Finally, the stretcher is joined to the arched rails using through double mortise and tenon joints which were cut using a drill press, chisels, hand planes, and the table saw.
