My survival story -- what I learned from having cancer | Martin Inderbitzin | TEDxZurich

19:18
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Martin Inderbitzin was 32 years old, with a fresh PhD degree, a new job and about to start a new life when he was suddenly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He had to go through surgery and endure nine months of radiochemotherapy. While coping with his new situation and challenging his many fears he realized how important his own state of mind was. In the middle of his treatment, when he was barely able to walk, he decided to sign up for a triathlon, despite never having seriously practiced endurance sports before. Today, he says this was one of the most important decisions of his life. With this new goal in mind he quickly realized the positive effect it had on his mental and physiological state. He tried to figure out how to‚train‘, while still being under treatment. After he had left the hospital his energy slowly returned and his training became more serious. Three months after the end of his treatment, Martin crossed the finish line of his first triathlon. Today, Martin is an enthusiastic Amateur-Triathlete, competing regularly in races around the globe. During his time as a patient Martin was inspired by stories from other patients who had lived through the same hassle. While crossing the finish line of his first race he realized that he himself had become an inspiration for other patients. This life changing moment gave Martin the idea to start his initiative: to collect and document cancer survival stories in the form of short videos and make them available to other patients and their families on an online platform. Martin Inderbitzin studied biology at the ETH Zurich and did his PhD in Neuroscience at UPF Barcelona with a special focus on artificial emotions and human computer interaction. After his studies in Spain he moved back to his home town Zurich and started to work as an interaction designer. In 2012 his dreams of a successful career were destroyed by a cancer diagnosis. While in treatment he decided to become a triathlete despite never having practiced this sport before. Since he left the hospital in 2013 he has completed multiple races and is enjoying his health again. Cancer, Alzheimer's & Protein Origami | David Pincus | TEDxBeaconStreet

10:57
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The two diseases most likely to afflict us as we age – cancer and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's – may both have an Achilles' heel. David Pincus will argue that the two are fundamentally linked by the vital cellular process of "protein folding". This provocative talk posits that protein folding is the key to unlocking all cancers – not just for treating specific cancers, like breast cancer or lung cancer – and for all neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and ALS. David Pincus, a Fellow at the Whitehead Institute and recipient of the NIH Director's Early Independence Award, is a molecular and cell biologist given the rare opportunity to direct an independent research laboratory and pursue his scientific ideas immediately following completion of his PhD. His studies on how cells respond to stress point to an underlying connection between cancer and neurodegenerative diseases that he hopes to exploit through research to potentially solve both. Big Data Meets Cancer: Neil Hunt at TEDxBeaconStreet

18:05
Targeted drug therapies are showing promise in combatting cancer, but classical clinical trials are poorly suited to matching them to the thousands of variations of cancer caused by different DNA mutations. Big data techniques offer a way to analyze data pooled across many patients: their specific disease mutations, biological markers, the treatments, and outcomes -- in order to identify unexpected ways that existing therapies can be applied and combined to create personalized treatments that dramatically improve the chances of survival. Neil Hunt has spent the past decade as Chief Product Officer at Netflix, and among other things, developing big data techniques to crowdsource movie and TV recommendations using billions of viewing records from millions of customers. Rare Oncology Research in the 21st Century

01:00:06
Speakers: Sachin Kulkarni, Executive Director, Strategic Development, Oncology & General Medicine, Premier Research Juliet M. Moritz, Executive Director, Strategic Development, Rare Diseases, Premier Research Study of rare cancers tends to look more like rare disease research than standard oncology research. This webinar will highlight some of the challenges in designing and conducting trials for rare cancers and explore positions adopted by various authors and research consortia on how to best design and conduct these trials, including a review of pending legislation — the 21st Century Cures Act — and how it might affect rare oncology research if passed. Considerations include recruiting patients with rare cancers, maximizing the value of data points in clinical trials involving small populations, potential use of adaptive design in these trials, and the appetite for risk among researchers and patients. Typically in oncology trials, and similarly in rare disease trials, the investigational product is tested only on affected subjects rather than on healthy volunteers. Testing new drugs on this vulnerable population requires consideration of the study design so the fewest possible subjects are exposed to the investigational product, and so the study yields information that supports viable research decisions. As the cost of clinical trials rises along with the cost of bringing new drugs to market, research should include alternative study design approaches and emphasize early indicators such as biomarkers, natural history data, and preclinical data. This approach also reduces the patient burden and may accelerate drug development timelines.

Fertility after Cancer: Teresa K. Woodruff at TEDxNorthwesternU

17:26
Ten years ago the phrase 'families after cancer' would have been an oxymoron if thought of at all. Today, due to the impressive rise in cancer survivors, this is not only a well-used phrase, but also an issue that needs further exploration. To address this concern we created the Oncofertility Consortium, a national, interdisciplinary initiative and uncommon team, to explore and expand the reproductive options for young cancer patients - men, women, and children. By bridging bench science with physician education and patient empowerment, the Oncofertility Consortium has transformed the dual catastrophe of cancer and infertility into the hopefulness of a life lived and life delivered. Teresa K. Woodruff, PhD is the Thomas J. Watkins Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Feinberg School of Medicine and Professor of Molecular Biosciences, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, Northwestern University. As a reproductive endocrinologist, Dr. Woodruff has spent the better part of her research career focusing on advancing our knowledge of women's health including fertility and reproductive health. She has brought national awareness to the unmet fertility management needs of young cancer patients and survivors. Dr. Woodruff has established a team of oncologists, fertility specialists, social scientists, educators and policy makers to translate her research to the clinical care of women who will lose their fertility due to cancer treatment. To describe this effort, she coined the term oncofertility, a word that has revolutionized the procedural guideline for young cancer patient care and has provided hope for a fertility future to thousands of cancer survivors. She has edited several books on the topic, and has published more that 170 peer-reviewed journal articles.
