Speaking after his TEDxUCD 2016 talk Dr Andrew Hogan said, “Obesity is a national epidemic and is responsible for 4,000 deaths per year in Ireland. One in four Irish adults are obese and only three in ten are registering a healthy bodyweight. More concerning is the fact that one in five Irish children are now overweight or obese and international studies have shown that obese children have an 82% chance of becoming obese adults. As a result it is predicted that the current generation of children will have a lower life expectancy than their parents as obesity causes numerous diseases including heart disease and cancer.” “As I outlined in my TEDxUCD 2016 talk the current solution to the obesity crisis is lifestyle modification, but meta-analysis indicates that weight gain is 90% irreversible for 90% of the population. So the question is why can't we lose weight? Could the immune system be protecting us from weight loss and can it be used in the fight against obesity?” Andrew is very passionate about childhood obesity and is keen to raise awareness of the problem and the imperative for prevention. His research focuses on the impact of obesity on the immune system and the role of the immune system in controlling bodyweight. In 2009 he was awarded a Newman Fellowship with the Obesity Immunology Research Group to investigate the impact of obesity on the immune system. In 2012 Andrew received a Senior Research Fellowship from the National Children’s Research Centre to investigate if childhood obesity negatively impacts the immune system. Andrew graduated with a BSc (Biology) from Maynooth University before undertaking his PhD there investigating the crosstalk between immune cells, with the aim of harnessing the immune system for novel therapies against cancer. Morning, everyone. Guess what time it is? Yep, it's time for the channel news. That's right. Four AM in Jordan. What are we gonna talk about today? I thought it was time I did another video for this channel. I was looking. I haven't done any in several days. I was looking through my website, mucusless-diet.com and was looking for some of the top articles that are really popular there. And one of the articles is how to lose weight on the Dr.Sebi plan. Now you will see that I have many articles like 'Checking for your BMI' (body mass index), 'How many calories do you have to eat to lose weight on?,' 'Juicing,' many things that will help you to lose weight. Does everybody on a vegan diet lose weight? No. Why? Because they eat a lot of junk. They're giving up meat and dairy. But they're eating packaged junk and things with chemicals, lots of pasta and breads. Ever seen some of these diet channels? I'm just unfriend a bunch of them. Everything's fried in oil, and a lot of flours. You know, how are you gonna lose weight eating all that stuff? Well, you can't. Well, we say, "Go on a plant food diet." Let's look at a healthy plant food diet. Now, the Dr.Sebi sale food store group now is against fried foods. You know, there's so many things that you can do in this life. There's many things on the Dr.Sebi plan that can help you lose weight, like nopal. And I put it in my Green Food Plus. That's one of the things Dr.Sebi suggested. Do you know one of the benefits of nopal? It helps you lose weight. If you saw some of my first videos where I was really, really fat ... Well, I'm still fat. But I'm less fat, let's say. Now, cayenne is really good also. Dandelion is really good also. If you go and read the article down in the description, you're going to see all the herbs that are good to help you lose weight. I get so many questions of fasting. Guys, fasting is liquid fasting. That means anything liquid. That doesn't mean water fasting. We're not approving of water fasting here. We're talking liquid fasting, smoothies, rain water, juice, herbal tea, soups that are pulverized. You can have all these things. Eat all you want. You must go to the bathroom two or three times a day. If you're not having enough fiber in your diet, you will not go to the bathroom. You should be taking your chelation herbs when you're fasting. The chelation herbs will help you to go to the bathroom. If you don't have diabetes, you can all the fruits you wanted also, as long as they're in a smoothy or something.There's so many things that you can eat. We want to have the Bromide Plus. Let me give you a recipe for the ginger elixir. We're going to change this a little bit. Sorry, my back is just killing me. We want one cup of ginger juice. So you buy your ginger. Don't peel it. Make sure it's organic. Put it in a juicer. We want one cup of ginger juice. We want one cup of lime juice. We want one cup of water and one cup of agave, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper. Let's mix up the water, the two juices together. Now, we're going to add in the agave and the black pepper. This is a natural detox. Take one ounce twice a day before your meals, so two different meals. He says it will help the digestion. It will stop all nausea. It will help you if you're taking enzymes because your vitamins are not being absorbed in your body. Make sure it's spring water. What's your favorite spring water everyone? What's your favorite spring water? With me, it's Fiji water. I love, love, love Fiji water. Let's eat big salads. Big salads are really good. You can throw on a cup of those chickpeas, hummus beans right on that salad. Make it really nice. All the fruits are in season. And oh my God! I was probably at my heaviest. You don’t ever weigh yourself at your heaviest but I was probably over 340, certainly around there. And now as I sit here in front of you I’m probably about 232. There’s a fluctuation of a couple of pounds, it goes back and forth. That’s a lot of weight. And I did not lose it for vanity. I was pretty happy with myself fat. I didn’t mind being fat. It wasn’t a big deal to me. I didn’t mind how I looked. But my health was getting bad. I didn’t even mind how I felt very much. I didn’t mind not being energetic and stuff. But I started having blood pressure that was stupid high like, you know, like English voltage, like 220 even on blood pressure medicine. And I have two young children. I’m an old dad. My daughter was born when I was 50. So I’m 61 now. And my life expectancy, the actuary tables were crashing down and the doctor said that I had to get a stomach sleeve. It was a wonderful moment because it then gave me the option to go crazy. If you’re going to surgically do something to me to stop me from swallowing that means I don’t have to worry about doing a sane diet. I can get nutty. And being given the option to be nutty was all I needed. I realized that not only am I not good at moderation, I also don’t respect moderation. Anyone I know who’s able to do moderation I don’t like them. The people I respect and love are people that go wild. I mean I don’t want to go into Kerouac here but the mad ones. No one brags about climbing a nice little slope. You brag about climbing Everest. So once my friend Ray Cronise who I can Cray Ray, once Cray Ray told me that I could lose the weight but it was going to be really hard, it got really easy. I wish it was always real cut and dry that it was always this one thing but it is usually a complex thing that could involve multiple things. Most people think that it is a lack of fiber that causes constipation, which is absolutely not true. In fact a lot of fiber that people usually consume even in vegetables is insoluble which means it is not digesting so adding more can constipate you more. If you look at what you did before starting this plan and after, we want to look at the big changes and we want to evaluate each change and I am talking about the constipation you had after you started the ketogenic plan. We are going to look at the change in vegetable fiber, the microbes live on fiber and they would get overwhelmed easily if you have not adapted these microbes into this new way of eating, just like keto adaptation you would have to look at the adaptation of microbes that have to evolve to grow to digest all these fibers because if they can’t digest this fibers, you are going to have this cruciferous and kale shake and you are going to bloat and gas and if that is happening you have to change the vegetables to maybe something like lettuce, spinach and other types of vegetables. It's more time efficient than doing hours of cardio and a much more effective way to boost your metabolism for the entire day. As you'll discover in this video, there's a specific type of strength training called Metabolic Resistance Training (MRT) that will give you the best results. It combines the best strength training exercises into a quick circuit and takes anywhere from 15-45 minutes to do. Because the workout won't be nearly as effective if you're pausing in between sets to find the right weights. But you may want a heavier weight for something like squats than you would use for the rows. How many circuits should you do in one full workout? (3:58) We recommend doing 3-5 cycles of this circuit per workout, 2-3 times per week. And remember, it's not about trying to pick the heaviest weight because we want to go long enough to see the best cardio effects as well. So choose weights that you can do at least 3 circuits with and build from there. Designing your own strength training routine (4:39) It's worth noting that each sequential exercise in the proper MRT routine targets a different area of the body than the one before it. So if you want to design your own routine, make sure you're not stacking things like squats & deadlifts together or a bench press before a shoulder press. Overall Summary of Metabolic Resistance Training (5:36) As mentioned before, the big benefit of this routine for weight loss is that it combines the best cardio with the best strength training. This is much more effective than cardio alone because our muscles are our metabolic engine. For up to 24 hours after these workouts, our body ramps up our metabolism to quickly provide the necessary nutrients for them to repair and grow. So if you haven't tried these workouts before and you're looking to accelerate your weight loss results, I highly encourage you to watch through this video and give one of these a try this week. They're quick, you don't need a gym, and you can do them right at home with a pair of dumbbells. It's really important to do because when they do, again, FMRI studies of some dieter's brain people who have lost 30 pounds and managed to keep it off for three years or more they have them hold a lemon lollipop in their mouth and the people who successfully lost weight their reward center lights up pretty brightly. They're pretty excited by this lemon lollipop, more so perhaps than people who are obese or normal weight but haven't lost the weight, haven't been successful dieters. The other part that lights up in their brain is that associated with restraint so it's self-control. And that lights up very brightly showing that they have control over this emotional response so at the same time they're getting excited they're also having a high self-control activity. The other people, normal or obese people are not having that self-control light up with the lemon lollipop. So it shows that one of the reasons we're able to stay on for three years or more on their diet is that they've gotten this really good control over what they eat every day and they've managed to keep weight off for years. Now any diet that you want to stay on or that you like it really does require willpower to stay on it. And I have to say that it might sound like it's something obvious but because a diet doesn't it just last for six months it last for years and years because the effect of our lower metabolism lasts for years you have to be able to stay on something for years. And one of the reasons that people come off quite a bit is they get tired of being on a diet. No one wants to stay on it for years. You have to kind of build these self-control muscles, these habits if you will make it part of your lifestyle so that it's automatic, it's not a big effort for you anymore. And so in the chapter I do wright about some techniques we can use because a diet it's like an eating regiment for the long haul. There's small things we can do and we can build it up into larger accomplishments later. Some of the small things are there's a study that shows that just managing your posture, keeping your back straight for two weeks, just stopping the swearing for two weeks, those people are able to manage more stressful tasks later, they're able to do more tasks that involve physical discomfort after that two week period. So in a way they kind of start exercising self-control in one dimension but it's leading into this other realm as well. And then there's another study were they pay people to use a gym eight times in one month and they pay another group to use it once a month and then they don't pay anyone at all the next month. And the people who have been using the gym for eight times, they were paid to go eight times they just start just using the gym without getting paid and so they've built up this habit. And so you can start small, start with small things, make them a habit and then build up to bigger things. There's also something called temptation bundling. And so we compare a want activity with a should activity. No one really wants to do a should activity all the time. But another study they had people listen to a really juicy audio novel and some people could only listen at the gym while they work out, other people they say take it you can take it home listen whenever you want. And the people where the novel is tied to the gym they go to the gym much more frequently than the people who get to listen to this novel all the time. Overweight for as long as he can remember, Tony attributes his nutritionally unhealthy lifestyle and food addiction to an unstable family life throughout his childhood. He had worked in food service management most of his career, but quit when he decided his weight had gotten out of control. Now, at 49 years of age, Tonys weight is teetering on the 400 lb. mark, causing him to be jobless and threatening his future with his fiancée. Tony needs help. Well, help is on the way! Chris Powell arrives to help Tony get his food addiction under control. He weighs in at 398 pounds at the start of his year-long transformation. Tony learns from Dr. Terry Schaack at the California Health and Longevity Institute that, since he carries the majority of his fat on his abdomen, he is at high risk for a variety of cardiovascular complications. Nutritionist Paulette lets him know that a lot of his weight comes from the sugary drinks he enjoys with each meal. Chris works with Tony to undo all of the years of unhealthy living that led up to this point. But the road to health is rougher than Chris had anticipated for his client. During the first workout, we learn that Tonys 28-year-old son, Marcus, is in the hospital fighting for his life. Tony decides to fight, too. Tonys home is transformed into a workout haven. Chris wants him to lose 100 pounds over the next three months. If that happens, Tony and his fiancée, Leslie, will get the honeymoon of their dreams. Speaking of Leslie, Chris challenges her to also undergo a transformation, but she doesnt seem to be fully committed. It causes a strain in their relationship. The stress takes a toll on Tonys weight loss. Chris makes him climb up over 400 feet in elevation to the scale at the top of a long set of steps. At the 90-day weigh-in, Tony comes in at 294 pounds. He reached his first goal with four pounds to spare! Tony is challenged to lose 60 pounds over the next 90 days. After four weeks of no contact, Chris learns that things with Leslie have cooled. Chris helps Tony move out of the house. On Day 168, we learn that Tony is basically living out of his car. That hasnt stopped him from working out. At the 60-day weigh-in, Chris learns that Tony is basically homeless. This is something hes been through, too. He promises that things will get better. At the weigh-in, Tony learns he only lost 29 pounds. To help get Tony back on track, Chris sends him to the Los Angeles Bodyguard Training Academy. They help him learn what it takes to start up his new business. Tony is hit with some bad news during Phase 3. His son Marcus has passed away. Chris meets up with him at the funeral service in Michigan. This is the first time his other son, Tony Jr., has seen him since he began his transformation. Chris also meets Tonys new girlfriend, who seems very supportive. After the service, Tony lets his son and ex know that hes been homeless. Its a highly-emotional scene. Tony returns home to continue his journey with an angel on his shoulder. He also reached out to Chris to take part in some therapy. This helps with his weight loss. At the 9-month weigh-in, Tony looks fantastic. Since he didnt get to enjoy the honeymoon prize that was the reward for making his first weigh-in goal, Chris gives him the cash equivalent of the trip to help Tony get back on his feet. At Day 270, Tony weighs in at 226 pounds. He says he couldnt have done it without the inspiration of his son Marcus. Tony is now an excellent candidate for the skin removal surgery. Three months later, its time for the final weigh-in. The crowd goes wild as they see a man who let nothing get in the way of his goal. Tony is all smiles when he arrives. He wants to be at 199 pounds when he steps on the scale. He comes in at 198. That means he lost a total of 200 pounds! Chris says his friends at Wal-mart have provided him with a $50,000 gift card to their stores. Tony is overwhelmed as the crowd chants his name. Tony had an amazing journey. Now its time to celebrate!
