Gods And Monsters (Great Military Blunders Documentary) | Timeline

49:02
Check out our new website for more incredible history documentaries: HD and ad-free. http://bit.ly/2O6zUsK Episode 1 tell us how the egos of Maj. Gen. Charles V.F. Townshend, Field Marshal Bernard L. Montgomery and Gen. Douglas MacArthur led to disaster for their troops. We have long saluted military genius and bravery. But the other side of the coin is military incompetence – a largely preventable, tragically expensive, yet totally absorbing aspect of human behaviour. From the Crusades to Vietnam, history is littered with examples of stupidity, obduracy, brutality and sheer breath-taking incompetence. Lack of communication, technological failure and a misplaced sense of superiority have led to the deaths of thousands of ordinary soldiers, let down by their masters and betrayed by arrogance. Using a combination of history, human interest and archive footage underpinned by powerful story-telling, Great Military Blunders charts man’s folly and cruelty in a series of stunning debacles, spanning almost a thousand years of conflict. Genghis Khan - Rise Of Mongol Empire - BBC Documentary - by roothmens

He came to power by uniting many of the nomadic tribes of Northeast Asia. After founding the Empire and being proclaimed "Genghis Khan", he started the Mongol invasions that conquered most of Eurasia. Campaigns initiated in his lifetime include those against the Qara Khitai, Caucasus, and Khwarazmian, Western Xia and Jin dynasties. These campaigns were often accompanied by wholesale massacres of the civilian populations – especially in the Khwarazmian and Western Xia controlled lands. By the end of his life, the Mongol Empire occupied a substantial portion of Central Asia and China. Before Genghis Khan died, he assigned Ögedei Khan as his successor and split his empire into khanates among his sons and grandsons. He died in 1227 after defeating the Western Xia. He was buried in an unmarked grave somewhere in Mongolia. His descendants extended the Mongol Empire across most of Eurasia by conquering or creating vassal states in all of modern-day China, Korea, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and substantial portions of modern Eastern Europe, Russia, and Southwest Asia. Many of these invasions repeated the earlier large-scale slaughters of local populations. As a result, Genghis Khan and his empire have a fearsome reputation in local histories. Beyond his military accomplishments, Genghis Khan also advanced the Mongol Empire in other ways. He decreed the adoption of the Uyghur script as the Mongol Empire's writing system. He also practiced meritocracy and encouraged religious tolerance in the Mongol Empire while unifying the nomadic tribes of Northeast Asia. Present-day Mongolians regard him as the founding father of Mongolia. Although known for the brutality of his campaigns and considered by many to have been a genocidal ruler, Genghis Khan is also credited with bringing the Silk Road under one cohesive political environment. This brought communication and trade from Northeast Asia into Muslim Southwest Asia and Christian Europe, thus expanding the horizons of all three cultural areas. Main article: Mongol military tactics and organization Reenactment of Mongol battle Genghis Khan put absolute trust in his generals, such as Muqali, Jebe and Subutai, and regarded them as close advisors, often extending them the same privileges and trust normally reserved for close family members. He allowed them to make decisions on their own when they embarked on campaigns far from the Mongol Empire capital Karakorum. Muqali, a trusted lieutenant, was given command of the Mongol forces against the Jin dynasty while Genghis Khan was fighting in Central Asia, and Subutai and Jebe were allowed to pursue the Great Raid into the Caucasus and Kievan Rus', an idea they had presented to the Khagan on their own initiative. While granting his generals a great deal of autonomy in making command decisions, Genghis Khan also expected unwavering loyalty from them. The Mongol military was also successful in siege warfare, cutting off resources for cities and towns by diverting certain rivers, taking enemy prisoners and driving them in front of the army, and adopting new ideas, techniques and tools from the people they conquered, particularly in employing Muslim and Chinese siege engines and engineers to aid the Mongol cavalry in capturing cities. Another standard tactic of the Mongol military was the commonly practiced feigned retreat to break enemy formations and to lure small enemy groups away from the larger group and defended position for ambush and counterattack. Another important aspect of the military organization of Genghis Khan was the communications and supply route or Yam, adapted from previous Chinese models. Genghis Khan dedicated special attention to this in order to speed up the gathering of military intelligence and official communications. To this end, Yam waystations were established all over the empire. In addition to most of the Mongol nobility up to the 20th century, the Mughal emperor Babur's mother was a descendant. Timur (also known as Tamerlane), the 14th century military leader, and many other nobilities of central Asian countries claimed descent from Genghis Khan. During the Soviet purge most of the Mongol nobility in Mongolia were purged.

FILM DESCRIPTION: Glory is a celebration of a little-known act of mass courage during the Civil War. Simply put, the heroes involved have been ignored by history due to racism. Those heroes were the all-black members of the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, headed by Col. Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), the son of an influential abolitionist (played by an uncredited Jane Alexander). Despite the fact that the Civil War is ostensibly being fought on their behalf, the black soldiers are denied virtually every privilege and amenity that is matter of course for their white counterparts; as in armies past and future, they are given the most menial and demeaning of tasks. Still, none of the soldiers quit the regiment when given the chance. The unofficial leaders of the group are gravedigger John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman) and fugitive slave Trip (Denzel Washington), respectively representing the brains and heart of the organization. The 54th acquit themselves valiantly at Fort Wagner, SC, charging a fortification manned by some 1,000 Confederates. Glory was based on Lincoln Kirstein's Lay This Laurel and Peter Burchard's One Gallant Rush; the latter book was founded on the letters of Col. Robert Gould Shaw, the real-life character played by Matthew Broderick. The film won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for co-star Denzel Washington, and additional statuettes for Best Cinematography (Freddie Francis) and Sound Recording. The Patriot - Battle of Camden Movie Clip (HD)

03:32
On the foggy morning of August 16, 1780, American and British armies clashed in the pine woods north of Camden, South Carolina, in one of the most important and influential battles of the Revolutionary War. An American victory would quash British plans to subjugate the Southern colonies and virtually guarantee the independence of the fledgling United States. A victory for the British would pave the way for the conquest of North Carolina and Virginia. After nearly an hour of frenzied, bloody combat, the British army emerged victorious, and American morale plummeted to its lowest point of the war. The rout at Camden was not a total loss, however, as Patriot forces eventually came away with a renewed determination to resist British advances, and the lessons from the defeat were applied to secure future victories that finally allowed the Patriots to triumph in the South. This engaging new book presents the Battle of Camden as never before: through the eyes and words of American and British participants and contemporary observers. The events leading up to the conflict, the combat itself and the consequences of Camden are all described in striking detail. The cunning strategies of both American Major General Horatio Gates and British Lieutenant General Lord Cornwallis are revealed, as are a number of battlefield reports from soldiers on both sides. In addition to these compelling firsthand accounts, The Battle of Camden includes analysis of the battle and its effects in America and Europe from George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Lord George Germain. With this landmark text, author and historian Jim Piecuch offers a comprehensive consideration of a vital Revolutionary battle and its effects on the war for American independence.

Battle of Stalingrad 1942-1943 - World War II DOCUMENTARY

13:08
After a long discussion, we decided to start making documentaries on the modern wars, and the first one we are going to cover will be the battle of Stalingrad in 1942-1943 that was fought between Germany and its allies and USSR within the World War II. This battle is considered one of the most decisive in the second World War, as it worsened the situation of the Wehrmacht and allowed the Soviet Red Army to start counterattacking all over the Eastern Front. This battle is also symbolic, as it was one of the rare battles where the egos of two rulers - Hitler and Stalin clashed. We are planning to release more documentaries covering the modern conflicts, so stay tuned. Alexander the Great History Channel Documentary

02:12:31
Alexander the Great, History Channel Documentary. The true story of Alexander the Great (king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon and member of the Argead dynasty) and the Macedonian Empire, which introduced the Hellenistic Period of ancient Greek civilization. Alexander the Great, king of Macedon, 356 BCE - 323 BCE: "Your ancestors came to Macedonia and the rest of Greece and did us great harm, though we had done them no prior injury. I have been appointed leader of the Greeks, and wanting to punish the Persians I have come to Asia, which I took from you." (Alexander's letter to Persian king Darius in response to a truce plea, as quoted in "Anabasis Alexandri" by Roman historian Arrian, Book 2.14.4, Greek original: “οἱ ὑμέτεροι πρόγονοι ἐλθόντες εἰς Μακεδονίαν καὶ εἰς τὴν ἄλλην Ἑλλάδα κακῶς ἐποίησαν ἡμᾶς οὐδὲν προηδικημένοι: ἐγὼ δὲ τῶν Ἑλλήνων ἡγεμὼν κατασταθεὶς καὶ τιμωρήσασθαι βουλόμενος Πέρσας διέβην ἐς τὴν Ἀσίαν, ὑπαρξάντων ὑμῶν.” http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Arr.+An.+2.14.4&fromdoc=Perseus%3Atext%3A2008.01.0530) "We must remember too that Philip and Alexander were Greeks, descended from Heracles, wished to be recognised as Greeks, as benefactors of the Greeks, even as Heracles had been." (Nicholas Hammond, British scholar and expert on Macedon, 'Alexander the Great', p.257) “Afterwards he [Alexander] revived his father's League of Corinth, and with it his plan for a pan-Hellenic invasion of Asia to punish the Persians for the suffering of the Greeks, especially the Athenians, in the Greco-Persian Wars and to liberate the Greek cities of Asia Minor.” (Victor Davis Hanson, “Makers of Ancient Strategy: From the Persian Wars to the Fall of Rome”, Princeton University Press, 2012, p.119) "They (ancient Macedonians) felt as Greeks, and they had no temptation to destroy what they claimed was their mother country. They had clearly no wish to swallow up Greece in Macedonia, but rather to make Macedonia, as a Greek state, the ruling power of Greece. Such was undoubtedly the aim of Philip and Alexander too." (Theodore Ayrault Dodge, military historian, “Alexander”, p.187) "His [Philip's] course seems to have been directed towards the establishment of stability in Greece, not conquest." (Eugene Borza, “Shadows of Olympus”, p.230) "Philip II of Macedon was anxious to pacify and unify Greeks at any cost." (Encyclopedia of Ancient Greece, Routledge, 2006) “In the end, the Greeks would fall under the rule of a single man, who would unify Greece: Philip II, king of Macedon (360-336 BC). His son, Alexander the Great, would lead the Greeks on a conquest of the ancient Near East vastly expanding the Greek world.” (Michael Burger, “The Shaping of Western Civilization: From Antiquity to the Enlightenment”, University of Toronto Press, 2008, p.76) “To a certain extent the Macedonian monarchy had already been a unifying element in Greek history, even before the conquests of Alexander.” (Michael Crawford, Fergus Millar, Emilio Gabba, "Sources for Ancient History", p. 12, Cambridge University Press) “After Philip's assassination at Aegae in 336, Alexander inherited, together with the Macedonian kingdom, his father's Panhellenic project to lead the Greeks in the conquest of Persia.” (Waldemar Heckel, Lawrence A. Tritle, “Alexander the Great: A New History”, Wiley-Blackwell, 2009, p.99) Yale University, USA: "We know the ancient Macedonians were fundamentally Greeks. That is to say they were Greek speakers and ethnically they were Greeks." Robert E. Lee: Facts, Biography, Early Life, Importance, Leadership, Quotes (2003)

53:48
Robert Edward Lee was born at Stratford Hall Plantation in Westmoreland County, Virginia, to Major General Henry Lee III (Light Horse Harry) (1756–1818), Governor of Virginia, and his second wife, Anne Hill Carter (1773–1829). His birth date has traditionally been recorded as January 19, 1807, but according to the historian Elizabeth Brown Pryor, "Lee's writings indicate he may have been born the previous year." One of Lee's great grandparents, Henry Lee I, was a prominent Virginian colonist of English descent.[10] Lee's family is one of Virginia's first families, descended from Richard Lee I, Esq., "the Immigrant" (1618–64), from the county of Shropshire in England.[11] Lee's mother grew up at Shirley Plantation, one of the most elegant homes in Virginia.[12] Lee's father, a tobacco planter, suffered severe financial reverses from failed investments.[13] Little is known of Lee as a child; he rarely spoke of his boyhood as an adult.[14] Nothing is known of his relationship with his father who, after leaving his family, mentioned Robert only once in a letter. When given the opportunity to visit his father's Georgia grave, he remained there only briefly; yet, during his time as president of Washington College, he defended his father in a biographical sketch while editing Light Horse Harry's memoirs.[15] In 1809, Harry Lee was put in debtors prison; soon after his release the following year, Harry and Anne Lee and their five children moved to a small house on Cameron Street in Alexandria, Virginia, both because there were then high quality local schools there, and because several members of her extended family lived nearby.[16] In 1811, the family, including the newly born sixth child, Mildred, moved to a house on Oronoco Street, still close to the center of town and with the houses of a number of Lee relatives close by.[17] In 1812, Harry Lee was badly injured in a political riot in Baltimore and traveled to the West Indies. He would never return, dying when his son Robert was eleven years old.[18] Left to raise six children alone in straitened circumstances, Anne Lee and her family often paid extended visits to relatives and family friends.[19] Robert Lee attended school at Eastern View, a school for young gentlemen, in Fauquier County, and then at the Alexandria Academy, free for local boys, where he showed an aptitude for mathematics. Although brought up to be a practicing Christian, he was not confirmed in the Episcopal Church until age 46.[20] Anne Lee's family was often supported by a relative, William Henry Fitzhugh, who owned the Oronoco Street house and allowed the Lees to stay at his home in Fairfax County, Ravensworth. When Robert was 17 in 1824, Fitzhugh wrote to the Secretary of War, John C. Calhoun, urging that Robert be given an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Fitzhugh wrote little of Robert's academic prowess, dwelling much on the prominence of his family, and erroneously stated the boy was 18. Instead of mailing the letter, Fitzhugh had young Robert deliver it.[21] In March 1824, Robert Lee received his appointment to West Point, but due to the large number of cadets admitted, Lee would have to wait a year to begin his studies there.[22] Lee entered West Point in the summer of 1825. At the time, the focus of the curriculum was engineering; the head of the Army Corps of Engineers supervised the school and the superintendent was an engineering officer. Cadets were not permitted leave until they had finished two years of study, and were rarely allowed off the Academy grounds. Lee graduated second in his class behind Charles Mason,[23] who resigned from the Army a year after graduation, and Lee did not incur any demerits during his four-year course of study, a distinction shared by five of his 45 classmates. In June 1829, Lee was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers.[24] After graduation, while awaiting assignment, he returned to Virginia to find his mother on her deathbed; she died at Ravensworth on July 26, 1829. Lee serves as a main character in the Shaara Family novels The Killer Angels (Gettysburg), Gods and Generals, and The Last Full Measure, as well as the film adaptations of Gettysburg and Gods and Generals. He is played by Martin Sheen in the former and his descendant Robert Duvall in the latter. Lee is portrayed as a hero in the historical children's novel Lee and Grant at Appomattox by MacKinlay Kantor. XTC - Generals and Majors

03:46
Promo for the "Generals and Majors" single. Apparently this was shot at the last minute after a meeting with Richard Branson, hence all the shots of him goofing around, and also the band's presence in the grounds of his manor! All very peculiar. As John Lydon once said, everything's "ho ho chortle chortle" with Branson, isn't it? Jolly japes.

"The Art of War is a Chinese military treatise written during the 6th century BC by Sun Tzu. Composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare, it has long been praised as the definitive work on military strategies and tactics of its time. The Art of War is one of the oldest and most famous studies of strategy and has had a huge influence on both military planning and beyond. Downfall - Hitler's Outrage (Original Subtitles, Extended Length)

05:54
EXPAND THIS DESCRIPTION FOR DETAILS AND INSIGHT Here's the scene that has become so virally popular on YouTube, in all its original glory. This entire movie is amazing, the acting superb, the history accurate. I consider it one of the best WWII movies ever made. Army Detachment Steiner (Armeeabteilung Steiner), was a temporary military unit, something more than a corps but less than an army, created on paper by German dictator Adolf Hitler on 21 April 1945 during the Battle of Berlin, and placed under the command of SS Obergruppenführer Felix Steiner. Hitler hoped that the units assigned to Steiner would be able to stage an effective counter attack against the northern pincer of the Soviet assault on Berlin. In the event, Steiner realised that the forces under his command were inadequate, and refused to attack. Read more about Steiner's failure to attack: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_Detachment_Steiner The two ladies in the beginning are Hitler's secretaries Traudl Junge and Gerda Christian. Read more about Traudl Junge: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traudl_Junge Read more about Gerda Christian: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerda_Christian The man that tells these two ladies that Hitler has nothing to lose in the beginning of the scene is Hermann Fegelein, whose name Hitler is screaming in another scene from this movie that has also gone viral. Read more about Hermann Fegelein: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermann_Fegelein The woman Hitler kisses at the end is obviously Eva Braun, his long-time girlfriend who married and committed suicide with Hitler. Read more about Eva Braun: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eva_Braun Read more about Hitler's very last days: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Adolf_Hitler Read more about the Battle of Berlin (the battle occurring in the background): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Berlin The actor who totally nails Hitler's mannerisms and speaking style is Bruno Ganz. Read more about Bruno Ganz: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruno_Ganz The following is an excerpt from an interview with Bruno Ganz appearing in The Guardian, regarding his role in the film and how he prepared himself for it: "I had some doubts when I was first offered the part of Hitler in Downfall. I asked myself whether I really wanted to get involved in this ugly, terrible stuff. But it was also a temptation - the subject has a fascinating side - so I agreed. I did four months of research. The producers sent me a tape, secretly recorded in Finland in 1942, with Hitler's natural voice - not the screaming orator we are used to, but a soft, attractive voice, a calm baritone. I tried to capture that. I became convinced Hitler had Parkinson's disease: there is newsreel of him presenting medals to the Hitler Youth a few days before his death, and you can see his hand shaking, so I visited a hospital and observed Parkinson's sufferers. There was no strategy in the film to say: "Let's show a new Hitler." I just wanted to show him as the evidence and the testimony of witnesses suggests. Witnesses say he was kind to dogs, charming to women, nice to children, but then he could just say: "Let's kill 5,000 people." In the film, when he and his generals are discussing military problems, one says to him: "What about the 100,000 young German officers on the eastern front? They are going to die." He says: "But they are born to die." He was completely pitiless. What fascinated me was that he was not just supported by the German people; he was loved. The relationship between him and them was almost religious. There was also that Wagnerian undercurrent - the hero dressed in white, standing against a corrupt world. Look at the bunker - the way Goebbels's wife is willing to kill her children because she can't imagine life after national socialism. It is like a cult. So it helped me that I am Swiss, not German. I'm not saying that I couldn't have played the part if I had been German, but it was useful to be able to put my Swiss passport between my heart and Mr Hitler, so that he couldn't touch me. Having played him, I cannot claim to understand Hitler. Even the witnesses who had been in the bunker with him were not really able to describe the essence of the man. He had no pity, no compassion, no understanding of what the victims of war suffered. Ultimately, I could not get to the heart of Hitler because there was none." The China Mission: George Marshall's Unfinished War, 1945-1947

01:09:42
Daniel Kurtz-Phelan became Executive Editor of Foreign Affairs in October 2017. He previously served as a member of the Secretary of State’s Policy Planning Staff and, before that, as a senior editor at the magazine. His writing has appeared in publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The New Yorker, and his narrative history of George Marshall’s post–World War II mission to China, The China Mission, was published by WW Norton in April 2018. The China Mission is a spellbinding narrative of the high-stakes mission that changed the course of America, China, and global politics—and a rich portrait of the towering, complex figure who carried it out. As World War II came to an end, General George Marshall was renowned as the architect of Allied victory. Set to retire, he instead accepted what he thought was a final mission—this time not to win a war, but to stop one. Across the Pacific, conflict between Chinese Nationalists and Communists threatened to suck in the United States and escalate into revolution. His assignment was to broker a peace, build a Chinese democracy, and prevent a Communist takeover, all while staving off World War III. In his thirteen months in China, Marshall journeyed across battle-scarred landscapes, grappled with Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, and plotted and argued with Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek and his brilliant wife, often over card games or cocktails. The results at first seemed miraculous. But as they started to come apart, Marshall was faced with a wrenching choice. Its consequences would define the rest of his career, as the secretary of state who launched the Marshall Plan and set the standard for American leadership, and the shape of the Cold War and the US-China relationship for decades to come. It would also help spark one of the darkest turns in American civic life, as Marshall and the mission became a first prominent target of McCarthyism, and the question of “who lost China” roiled American politics. The China Mission traces this neglected turning point and forgotten interlude in a heroic career—a story of not just diplomatic wrangling and guerrilla warfare, but also intricate spycraft and charismatic personalities. Drawing on eyewitness accounts both personal and official, it offers a richly detailed, gripping, close-up, and often surprising view of the central figures of the time—from Marshall, Mao, and Chiang to Eisenhower, Truman, and MacArthur—as they stood face-to-face and struggled to make history, with consequences and lessons that echo today.

Lessons Learned: General MacArthur's Dismissal

06:21
On April 11, 1951, President Harry Truman announced with "deep regret" that he had dismissed General Douglas MacArthur as commanding general of U.S. forces in the Korean War. Truman's decision came after MacArthur repeatedly criticized the president's policies, advocating a more aggressive strategy even as Truman sought to limit the war. After his announcement, the president faced intense criticism while MacArthur returned home to a hero's welcome, including an address to a joint session of Congress and a ticker-tape parade through New York City in his honor. However, the controversy slowly subsided as most Americans--and U.S. generals--made it clear that they opposed MacArthur's military strategy. General Omar Bradley famously said that MacArthur's policies "would involve us in the wrong war, at the wrong place, at the wrong time, and with the wrong enemy." James M. Lindsay, CFR's senior vice president and director of studies, argues that the firing of MacArthur shows that "presidents can be justified in overruling the military advice of even their most decorated generals." That lesson continues to apply today, he says. When President Obama receives recommendations from his generals concerning the war in Afghanistan, he "may accept those recommendations, revise them, or reject them entirely." "That is the meaning of the principle of civilian control of the military," Lindsay argues, "and it's what the framers intended when they made the president 'commander-in-chief.'" This video is part of Lessons Learned with James M. Lindsay, a series dedicated to exploring historical events and examining their meaning in the context of foreign relations today: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF2F38E5941910270 http://www.cfr.org/us-strategy-and-politics/lessons-learned-general-macarthurs-dismissal/p27905

Fall Of Constantinople 1453 - Ottoman Wars DOCUMENTARY

The Eastern Roman Empire was under constant Ottoman pressure ever since the new conquerors appeared in the Anatolia. Although the Ottomans tried to take Constantinople on a number of occasions, they had to lift the siege of the city due to the Crusades of Varna and Nicopolis, the Timurid Invasion and the battle of Ankara, and the Interregnum period that happened after their Sultan Bayezid was taken hostage by Timur. However, after the victories at the battles of Varna (1444) and 2nd Kosovo (1448) against the crusaders of Wladyslaw III and John Hunyadi, the road to Constantinople was open and the new sultan Mehmed II set his sight on the city of the Roman emperors... Are Christians Gods Superhero Avengers?

00:31
The Avengers Movie may turn out to be the biggest blockbuster sensation in the history of movies, after just raking in over 1 billion worldwide after its second weekend in the U.S. Some of the greatest names of world history include Nebuchadnezzar, Alexander the Great, Atilla the Hun, Napoleon, etc. Sadly, these great men, though considered as heroes by many in their day, were usually egotistical and ruthless monarchs with little compassion people. Where have all our American heroes gone? Throughout American History, we have had many heroes like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone,, Lewis and Clark, Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, the Great Generals of WW2, Martin Luther King Jr., etc. But in recent decades people have either forgotten about these old heroes or have found reasons to criticize them. People are not only losing faith in their personal heroes, but also in our American institutions — in Government, Religion and Business. America was very patriotic up to World War II. Comic book super heroes were depicted as supporting the patriotic fervor of World War 2, with superman, Captain America and other heroes. Many of these fictional heroes were depicted as battling Hitler and the Nazis. The decline in patriotism is reflected in recent Hollywood movies. SUPERMAN'S motto, "Truth, justice and the American way," was rewritten in the 2006 "Superman Returns" movie to "Truth, justice and . . . all that stuff." At one point in the 2012 Avengers movie, Captain America is shown his upgraded uniform and is a little surprised to see the Stars and Stripes still adorning the costume. Turning to Nick Fury, he says almost sadly, "Aren't the Stars and Stripes a little old fashioned?" Fury replies, "A little old fashion might be just what we need." The only real and solid faith we can enjoy is in the ultimate hero, God Himself. Psa 28:7 (NASV) says, "The LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, And with my song I shall thank Him." With no new real American heroes to place our hope in, people continue to enjoy the pretend heroes of the movies. But is the idea of super heroes really just pretend? Well not really. The Bible is full of super heroes. Samson had the strength to lift the city gates off of its hinges and to push down the supporting pillars of a great temple. Moses brought horrible plagues on the Egyptians and parted the Red Sea for the Hebrews. Elijah called down fire from heaven to destroy his enemies. Of course none of these Bible characters had their own powers, except as God provided it on their behalf and for His people. Are the days of these Bible super heroes gone forever? Or will real super heroes rise up and save us someday soon? Absolutely yes! During the Gospel Age, since Pentecost, God has been pulling together a team of super heroes. He has been helping them to develop super spiritual powers, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. These super spiritual powers are called the fruits of the spirit in Galatians 5:22, 23 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control." The training and development of the Christlike characters of these New Creatures is nearly complete. They have been hand picked and prepared since Pentecost to be Christ's body members, and under His command to be earth's future judges, priests and kings. These heroes will be soon led by their leader, Jesus Christ, the King of Kings, to save mankind. All mankind has been waiting for them since the fall of Adam. Romans 8 (NASV) "19 For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God... 21 the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God" Read more about God's plan to rescue mankind with Christ and these super heroes He has been training for nearly 2,000 years by clicking here: On June 3, 2012 -- Hear the Christian Questions Radio program discuss the topic of: Are Christian God's Super Hero Avengers? All we ask is to be let alone. -Jefferson Davis --- I worked night and day for twelve years to prevent the war, but I could not. The North was mad and blind, would not let us govern ourselves, and so the war came. -Jefferson Davis --- Once you get them running, you stay right on top of them, and that way a small force can defeat a large one every time... Only thus can a weaker country cope with a stronger; it must make up in activity what it lacks in strength. Who could not conquer with such troops as these? My troops may fail to take a position, but are never driven from one! -Stonewall Jackson --- Captain, my religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me. That is the way all men should live, and then all would be equally brave. -Stonewall Jackson --- Our God was my shield. His protecting care is an additional cause for gratitude. I see from the number of physicians that you think my condition dangerous, but I thank God, if it is His will, that I am ready to go. Let us cross over the river, and rest under the shade of the trees . . . -Stonewall Jackson --- A true man of honor feels humbled himself when he cannot help humbling others. -Robert E. Lee --- Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more, you should never wish to do less. -Robert E. Lee --- I think it better to do right, even if we suffer in so doing, than to incur the reproach of our consciences and posterity. -Robert E. Lee --- I tremble for my country when I hear of confidence expressed in me. I know too well my weakness, that our only hope is in God. -Robert E. Lee --- The war... was an unnecessary condition of affairs, and might have been avoided if forebearance and wisdom had been practiced on both sides. -Robert E. Lee --- Believe that you can whip the enemy, and you have won half the battle. -General J. E. B. Stuart --- The withdrawal of a State from a league has no revolutionary or insurrectionary characteristic. The government of the State remains unchanged as to all internal affairs. It is only its external or confederate relations that are altered. To term this action of a Sovereign a 'rebellion' is a gross abuse of language. -Jefferson Davis --- Obstacles may retard, but they cannot long prevent the progress of a movement sanctified by its justice, and sustained by a virtuous people. -Jefferson Davis --- The contest is not over, the strife is not ended. It has only entered upon a new and enlarged arena. -Jefferson Davis --- The principle for which we contend is bound to reassert itself, though it may be at another time and in another form. -Jefferson Davis --- The people of the States now confederated.....believed that to remain longer in the Union would subject them to continuance of a disparaging discrimination, submission to which would be inconsistent with their welfare, and intolerable to a proud people. They therefore determined to sever its bounds and established a new Confederacy for themselves. -Jefferson Davis

Gettysburg Battlefield - Scene of Maj. Gen. John F. Reynolds' Death on July 1

02:31
The death of Reynolds as portrayed in the film Gettysburg here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWhHe-Xy_OY Lancaster, Pennsylvania native John F. Reynolds was a West Point graduate and instructor at that institution when the Civil War began. Initially, he was the Lieutenant Colonel of the 14th U.S. Infantry, but was soon promoted to brigadier general of volunteers. Reynolds saw action as a brigade commander in the Fifth Corps during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign in Virginia; he was captured on June 27th and exchanged in August. After his return, Reynolds was named commander of the Union Army’s First Corps. He was promoted to major general on November 29th, 1862. In late June 1863, Reynolds led the three corps (First, Third, and Eleventh) left wing of the Army of the Potomac as it advanced north towards Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. On the morning of July 1st, Brigadier General John Buford’s union cavalrymen were deployed in defensive positions on the northwest side of Gettysburg and engaged Confederate forces under the command of Major General Henry Heth as they advanced towards the town. The dismounted cavalrymen fought a delaying action and waited for the rest of the army to arrive. Buford sent word of the fighting to Reynolds, and the general rode ahead to the scene of the action. Reynolds met Buford at the latter’s observation post at the Lutheran Seminary. Buford filled in Reynolds on the situation. His men were delaying the enemy advance but were being pushed back. It was up to Reynolds whether the Federals would continue to fight at that location or withdraw. Reynolds decided to fight. He ordered Buford to hold as best as they could while he hastened the left wing’s three corps forward. The general understood the importance of holding the Confederates northwest of Gettysburg long enough for the bulk of the army to arrive and occupy the high ground to the east and south of town. Reynolds directed the deployment of the arriving Union regiments. The two brigade First Division of the First Corps were the first Federal units to arrive. The First Brigade of the division consisted of the 2nd, 6th, and 7th Wisconsin Infantry Regiments, the 19th Indiana Infantry, and the 24th Michigan Infantry–The Iron Brigade. The Second Division consisted of six regiments from New York, Pennsylvania, and Indiana. The 6th Wisconsin was ordered to the right to join two Second Brigade regiments advancing on a threat from Brigadier General Joseph Davis’ Brigade near an unfinished railroad cut near the Chambersburg Pike. The rest of the Iron Brigade hurried forward towards the Herbst Woods on McPherson’s Ridge. The Iron Brigade clashed with the Tennessee and Alabama troops of Brigadier General James J. Archer’s brigade in the Herbst Woods. Reynolds was in the thick of the action mounted on his horse, issuing orders, just east of the woods. As the 2nd Wisconsin rushed past Reynolds into the woods, Reynolds shouted “Forward men, forward, for God’s sake, and drive those fellows out of the woods.” The two sides blasted away at each other with devastating effect. Reynolds, in his hazardous forward position, was hit in the back of neck by a bullet and killed instantly. There have been several theories as to the circumstances of Reynolds’ death. One popular view is that Reynolds was killed by a sharpshooter, or a solitary sniper or marksman. Mounted on his horse and close to the action, Reynolds would have made an inviting target for such a shooter. But with all the lead flying through the air from the 7th and 14th Tennessee Regiments’ firing at the 2nd Wisconsin, and with Reynolds up on his horse, it’s just as likely he was killed by a round that passed over the heads of the Wisconsin men. Reynolds was a popular and capable military leader. While his death was a blow to the Army of the Potomac, his actions played a big part in the eventual Union victory at Gettysburg. By continuing the delaying action that Buford had begun, the Union Army was able to arrive and set up a strong defensive position on the high ground from Culp’s Hill on the north, along Cemetery Ridge, and on down to the Round Tops to the south. John Reynolds is buried in his hometown of Lancaster.

Created in 2008 as part of the Richmond, Virginia 48 Hour Film festival. Walked away with 7 Awards and Honorable Mentions that year, which was nice. Stars Thym Kennedy, John D. Pagano, Charles Wissinger and Krystal Browning. This is the "non-48HFF" version of our little ghosty-movie. It was shot entirely on location at an abandoned Va Dept. of Transportation maintenance facility in eastern Richmond - a very funky place.

African Tribes Traditions & Rituals | Full Documentary

In this region of the Ivory Coast there are still ancient jungles, such as the Tai jungle, and leafy forests which are home to different ethnic branches of the Mande group. The most characteristic of these are the Dan, who are related to the Guere. Their villages are very distant from each other – they do not form a large community, but rather isolated groups, which only come together in exceptional circumstances, to defend themselves against some common threat. masks are real institutions, of the Gueré which order, legislate and codify the social life of the different ethnic groups that live in this region in the west of the Ivory Coast. A great part of the mythology of the Dan is born in the heart of the jungle, in these labyrinthine forests teeming with life, where their deities live, and where nature and magic melt into one. The Dan have always respected and venerated their natural surroundings, as something sacred, as it is the indisputable genesis of their cosmogony. In the interior of this green world, we find the bridges of the spirits. But these are not the work of man. The supernatural beings of the forest themselves build these bridges, to make it easier for the men who live here to move through the forest. Hundreds of lianas, the resistant living limbs of the jungle, are woven together in the dead of night by the spirits. At dawn, a new bridge connects the opposing banks of a river, or crosses a deep ravine. No one knows how or when they are built. But for them they are sacred, because they are made with lianas, and everything that comes from the jungle is revered. That is why they take their shoes off before crossing, as a mark of respect. Apart from the daily chores, the women occupy a very important position in the social structure of the Ubi. As in the majority of the 60 or so different ethnic groups that live in the Ivory Coast, the women form secret societies, which have a decisive influence in the village about sex rituals. In their meetings, which no man may attend, they deal with matters exclusive to the women, though their attention has been centred on just one subject for some time now. In the main cities of the Ivory Coast, associations have been formed to fight to eradicate the barbarous traditional practices, the mutilation of female sex organs. Periodically, women from these associations travel to the most remote villages, to speak with the leaders of the secret societies, and try to convince them to abandon this custom. Every village in the Ivory Coast has an area of the nearby forest where the spirits of their ancestors live. It is the sacred forest of each group, a place which is taboo for strangers. Here, the young men are brought to be initiated, circumcisions are carried out, they speak to the masks of wisdom, and justice is imparted. To the north of the Mande country lies the land of the Senufo, one of the ethnic groups of Africa that has best preserved its own culture. Agriculture is their main activity, though they also have cattle, above all goats and cows. Rice forms an important part of their diet. In these mortars, they separate the grain from the husk. It will then be stored in the granaries, along with the millet and maize. Senufo villages tend to be large compared to those of other groups in the Ivory Coast. They are made up of groupings of different clans and lineages, which form what we would call districts. In each one of them there is a fetish house, where they keep their masks and religious carvings. Women are very important in Senufo society. Their power is comparable to that of the men, though less evident. The system of transmission of culture and tradition is matrilineal, which makes the woman the head of the lineage. Senufo painting is also among the most widely recognised in Africa. Picasso came here, seeking inspiration for cubism, from these artists who expression the visions of the hunters, or the deities of the Poro. They use vegetable paints made using techniques whose origins are lost in the depths of time.

Shaara: How does Chamberlain respond to the mutineers?

03:01
"Chamberlain" is a chapter from The Killer Angels, the Pulitzer Prize-winning historical novel about the Battle of Gettysburg, by Michael Shaara (1928-1988). Previously a prolific writer of science fiction and sports stories, Shaara was inspired to write the novel after discovering letters written by his great-grandfather, who had been injured at Gettysburg as a member of the Fourth Georgia Infantry, and after personally visiting the battlefield. Shaara's narrative is organized into four days—June 30, 1863, the day on which Union and Confederate armies move into Gettysburg; and July 1, 2, and 3, the days of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War—and each day's events are told from the perspective of one of the commanders of the competing armies. Shaara's chapter "Chamberlain" focuses on Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (1828-1914), commanding officer of the Twentieth Maine, and his efforts (on June 30) to encourage mutineers to re-join the battle. As Shaara will recount in a later chapter, Chamberlain, his regiment out of ammunition, would lead a bayonet charge against the enemy, enabling the Union army to hold Little Round Top and ultimately to win the battle. Not reported by Shaara are the various honors Chamberlain received: for his leadership at Gettysburg and elsewhere, he was, during the war itself, sequentially promoted, eventually achieving the rank of brigadier general. For his heroism at Little Round Top, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. And, at the very end of the war, he was given the honor of receiving, at Appomattox, the surrender of the Confederate infantry. After the Civil War, Chamberlain was elected to four terms as governor of Maine, following which he returned to his alma mater, Bowdoin College, as its president. He died of the unhealed wounds he incurred during his war years. Watch editors Amy A. Kass and Leon R. Kass converse with guest host Eliot A. Cohen (Johns Hopkins SAIS) about the story.
