Dr. Julie Holland argues that women are designed by nature to be dynamic and sensitive – women are moody and that is a good thing. Yet millions of women are medicating away their emotions because we are out of sync with our own bodies and we are told that moodiness is a problem to be fixed. One in four women takes a psychiatric drug. If you add sleeping pills to the mix the statistics become higher. Overprescribed medications can have far-reaching consequences for women in many areas of our lives: sex, relationships, sleep, eating, focus, balance, and aging. Dr. Holland's newest book is titled Moody Bitches: The Truth About the Drugs You’re Taking, the Sleep You’re Missing, the Sex You’re Not Having and What’s Really Making You Crazy. Read more at BigThink.com: http://goo.gl/O8uR Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript: The main kind of antidepressant that is the most popularly prescribed are the SSRIs and these are medicines that increase serotonin transmission. And when you start to push on the doses of these SSRIs you start to lose some sort of quintessential feminine things. First of all it becomes much hard to climax and it becomes much, much harder to cry. But you also see decreases in empathy, in sensitivity, in passion. The simple way of thinking about an SSRI is that you have two brain cells and one is a pitcher and one is a catcher. So pitch, catch. Pitch, catch. So this nerve cell is throwing serotonin across and this one is catching it. What the medicines do is they block the recycling back into the pitcher. So, you know, I’m throwing, I’m throwing, some of this gets caught, some of it gets dropped. It just doesn’t get over there but I’ll suck it back in and try again. So if you block the recycling more is in the middle to get across. So there’s more, you know, the space between the nerve cells is called the synapse. If you block the recycling of the serotonin into the releasing cell more is available for the catching cell. So it ends up enhancing the transmission. How enhanced serotonergic transmission translates into feeling better and feeling less anxious is much more complicated. But, you know, the simplistic way to think about it is that if you have higher levels of serotonin, if your transmission is better you will be more relaxed and more happy. It’s a little easier to smile. It’s a little harder to cry. So, you know, I’ve had patients come to me and say, you know, I’ve tried antidepressants before but they always made me feel like a zombie or they didn’t make me feel like myself. Or I had a patient who said like I cut my finger and I looked down and I saw that it was bleeding and I saw that it was my blood but I didn’t really feel like connected to my finger or the blood. You know, things like that that are really, really worrisome. Or I’ve had patients say, you know, I was in this situation where I knew I should be crying and I couldn’t cry. And, you know, I felt terrible that I couldn’t express that emotion to bond with my friend or something like that. So these antidepressants do scale back a lot of expression of emotion and feeling emotion even sort of thinking emotional thoughts. If you’re terribly depressed and you need antidepressants to get out of bed and function and go to work I get it. That’s one thing. But what I’m worried about is more and more women deciding to go on antidepressants because their friends are doing it and that’s what’s, you know, more and more women who are at work are taking these SSRIs so that they cannot cry, not get flustered, keep going forward. You know I think it jives with this sort of forward momentum agenda that so many of us have and especially in the workplace. But, you know, I would say at what cost? You know it is true that SSRIs can help you get ahead and there have been really interesting animal studies where, you know, the primates who are on SSRIs ascended up the dominance hierarchy. And the ones who became dominated over got stressed out and had lower serotonin levels. So there does seem to be some component of serotonin affecting dominance hierarchies and, you know, the ability to move ahead or to lean in. So I totally get that there are advantages to being on an SSRI in the workplace. But, you’re going to miss out on knowing what’s right because you feel it or being hurt by what somebody said and showing them that you’re hurt. And so that person can learn that their behavior has emotional consequences for other people. So and it changes the whole sort of tone of the workplace. There’s going to be less accountability and less sort of calling people on their misbehavior if you’re not even feeling that anyone misbehaved. [TRANSCRIPT TRUNCATED]

Greetings from Berlin you guys! I finally made it :) So, withdrawal symptoms when quitting SSRIs include: - Anxiety - Depression and mood swings - Dizziness and balance problems, possibly vertigo - Electric shock sensations - Fatigue - Flu-like symptoms - Headache - Loss of coordination - Muscle spasms - Nausea - Nightmares - Tremors - Trouble sleeping - Vomiting ...And the list goes on. I have been struggling with brain zaps, decreased appetite and flu-like symptoms along with depersonalization and dizziness. The best recommendation I can give is to get lots of sleep, try and reduce stress as much as possible, eat healthy and drink loads of water. You might also want to reduce you physical activity or replace your usual excersize routine with a lighter one. If you feel too bad to tolerate the symptoms please contact your doctor, and also try to taper off your antidepressant gradually (your doctor will provide you with a scheme like this one: https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/how-to-taper-off-your-antidepressant) If you find yourself having suicidal ideations, thoughts or intentions please contact a help line: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org Anyway, stay positive, healthy and happy! much love xx ___ instagram: https://www.instagram.com/a._fitz/ tumblr: https://www.tumblr.com/blog/annafitzgerald ___

Side effects of quitting medication Quitting “cold turkey” may cause withdrawal symptoms. Suddenly stopping your medicine may also worsen your depression. Here are some of the possible effects of quitting too quickly: You get sick. Antidepressant discontinuation syndrome, also called antidepressant withdrawal, occurs when a person abruptly stops taking antidepressant medication. Many people who experience antidepressant withdrawal feel like they have the flu or a stomach bug. They may also experience disturbing thoughts or images. You set back your treatment. Stopping medication can set back your treatment plan. It can increase the time it takes to feel better or it can actually cause your symptoms to worsen. You contemplate suicide. Not being properly treated may increase your risk of suicidal thoughts. It also increases the risk that you’ll act on those thoughts. The most common health problem linked to suicide is depression, says the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Other symptoms get worse. Stopping an antidepressant might worsen other symptoms associated with your depression such as headaches, pain, or insomnia. Additionally, untreated depression can make it harder for you to manage other health problems. Other symptoms of antidepressant withdrawal include: anxiety fatigue nightmares trouble sleeping depression and mood swings nausea vomiting diarrhea abdominal cramping flu-like symptoms headache sweating Antidepressants and pregnancy Just found out you’re pregnant? Don’t stop taking your antidepressant medication. According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, pregnant women who have untreated or poorly treated psychiatric health problems, including depression, may be less likely to take good care of themselves during pregnancy. Let the doctor who is treating your depression know that you are pregnant. And, of course, let the doctor managing your pregnancy know that you have depression and are taking medication. Together, you can make decisions about how to best treat your depression during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor Some people with depression stay on their medication indefinitely. Others are able to stop taking it after a period of weeks or months. The best way to stop taking your antidepressant is to slowly taper the medication under a doctor’s supervision. This involves slowly lowering the dose of medication until you are completely off of it. Talk to your healthcare provider about incorporating the following lifestyle changes to improve your overall health, lessen the symptoms of depression, and prevent it from recurring: exercise meditation getting plenty of sleep not abusing alcohol and drugs eating healthy, balanced meals reducing stress No two people will respond to quitting antidepressants in the same way. Doctors have no way of knowing who will have withdrawal symptoms and who won’t. Talk with your doctor and don’t gamble on your health and wellness. https://www.healthline.com/health/depression/dangers-of-stopping-antidepressants#5 keywords antidepressants, zoloft, drugs, antinyan, gayane, withdrawal symptoms, medications, side effects, depression, anxiety, wight gain, weight loss, mood changes,

Feel Depressed or Anxious? Talk to Someone Now http://www.tryonlinetherapy.com/depressiontoexpression/ Antidepressants do hold their fair share of side effects. Let's be honest, anti-depressants have created some pretty serious horror stories in the past and continue to be scary option for those who suffer from anxiety or depression. I get it, taking antidepressants should be a decision you are comfortable with first. Of course, with every bad story from antidepressants there are also many success stories from people who used the exact same drug that others used who had these horror stories. I would say that my anti-depressant story is an extremely positive one. Let's talk about some of the side effects of these drugs and an important differentiation between POSSIBLE side effects and PROBABLE side effects. There's the key word right there :) If you are to comment, please refuse from naming any kinds of medications as everyones treatment is different. Let's not discourage the use of anti-depressants or promote them. Whatever works baby!! I've seen a lot of other videos on the topic of quitting the SSRI antidepressant Zoloft (sertraline) but not many on successfully getting through the withdrawals and coming through the other side safely. I hope this video is reassuring to anyone out there who is going through the same dilemma. If you have any question please feel free to ask/ or share your own experience. I'll explain what led me to do this and I hope it isn't too rambling. I have been taking Zoloft since 2011 and just recently have been told that manufacturing of the drug has ceased until Jan 2016. I don't know about the rest of the world but in Australia it has become like something out of Mad Max, with people trying to track down the last supplies. I tried the generic brand which I have been told is exactly the same. But after a month of this I began feeling more depressed/ sad than I ever have and began suffering from insomnia and blurred vision. The last straw for me was when I told my doctor of these changes and all I got in return was a cocky-bullshit answer that I must be imagining these changes. ''Yeah, well doc, I don't really want to imagine wanting to killing myself everyday, so politely go fuck yourself''. So I tried tappering off them from 100mg to 25mg (maybe to steep) and started noticing the withdrawals after a day. After a few days of this I stopped them completely and the dizziness became a constant thing. Week 2 brought with it the numbness and brain zaps. With week 3 came the insomnia/ aching joints. At about a month of stopping nearly all the signs have gone away. I may notice the dizziness if I move or look too quickly but you get used to doing things slow. So this video is just me telling you the withdrawal symptoms I experienced. It is not advised to just completely stop any antidepressant but I figured I was worse on the generic so I wanted to stop more than anything. I want to try and see what I am normal for a few months. The most important thing is being in the right headspace to do such a thing. Only try and go off them if you think you are ready. In my situation I have realised that most of the time if I feel anxious it is because of my surroundings and not what is going on in my head. Also avoid people who make you feel terrible. The world is made up of mainly idiots so it is more likely they have a problem and you don't. At least you have made the steps to help yourself. If I ever relapse into really bad depression/anxiety like I know that I can always go back on Zoloft. By then I think Pfizer would have mined the ''missing ingredients'' they need to make Zoloft from Mars.

It blocks some adrenergic auto and heteroreceptors, increasing serotonin release, and selectively antagonizes serotonin receptors in the central and peripheral nervous system. It also enhances serotonin neurotransmission and blocks the histaminergic and muscarinic receptors. Mirtazapine is not a serotonin or norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor but may increase serotonin and norepinephrine by other mechanisms of action. Side Effects: Constipation, dry mouth, weight gain, increase appetite, somnolence, sedation, sleepiness, weakness, distrurbance in thinking, peripheral edema, increased blood pressure. When Discontinuing Use: Mirtazapine and other antidepressants may cause a discontinuation syndrome upon cessation. A GRADUAL and SLOW reduction in dose is recommended. Effects of sudden cessation of treatment with mirtazapine may include depression, anxiety, panic attacks, vertigo, restlessness, irritability, decreased appetite, insomnia, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, flu-like symptoms such as allergies and pruritus, headaches and sometimes hypomania or mania. It can go so far as to cause suicidal thoughts, so please, be careful!! AKA not good!!! Brain zaps are part of what we call medication discontinuation syndrome. Medication discontinuation syndrome are symptoms that you can see when you suddenly stop your medication. In this case were talking about what you see when you stop the serotonin enhancing antidepressants. An easy way to remember these symptoms is with the mnemonic FINISH F - Flulike symptoms. I - insomnia. N - nausea or maybe even vomiting. I - imbalance like dizziness or even vertigo like your head is spinning. S - sensory disturbances and that would be the electric shocks that seem to be coming from your brain. H - for hyperarousal and this would be anxiety, irritability, aggression or even jerkiness. Facebook Group for victims, not open to the public, but available if you have had a similar event: https://www.facebook.com/groups/241028905999497/ Severe adverse reaction to one 10mg pill of Lexapro (escitalopram) almost 5 years ago. I am attempting to share my experiences, thoughts and opinions about SSRI drugs and what happened to me. I live in Kentucky, United States. Please comment or send an email to discuss this issue. Lexapro, has ruined my life. One 10mg pill severely damaged my brain. 8 hours after taking the pill, I entered into a world of a neurological nightmare. I am afraid this happens more often than we know. I could have very easily been placed in a psyche-ward or accidentally killed myself the first few days after taking that pill. Then, no one would be able to tell my story. What happened........ After suffering a chronic sleep disorder for decades, I couldn't get more than 4 hours of sleep a night so I went to the doctor for some medical help. September 23rd 2006: The doctor prescribed Lexapro (10mg). So I took this pill having been reassured by frequent television adverstisements that it was safe. My doctor also acted as if these pills were harmless. I took the pill and went to sleep about noon. 8 hours later I woke to the most awful, strange, powerful inner sensations. I was also filled with a feeling of dread or horror. I had never experienced anything like this before and I couldn't believe it. It felt as if my brain was dying...... I jumped out of bed and ran around my house.... I couldn't stop moving or the sensations would get worse. Sheer horror! The symptoms: Many are similar to Serotonin Syndrome. Waves of nervous energy flowing through my body like painful electric shocks Inner tremor Mania Extreme pressure in head Couldn't lay down flat Extreme panic and fear...dread Sensations of my brain and body burning or sizzling, buzzing Intense disconnected feeling from reality High Fever (103) Flu-like symptoms Terrible headache Extreme nausea Waves of sensations throughout my body and skin Visual hallucinations Visual impairments Dizzy spells Unable to exercise much unable to tolerate caffeine, alcohol and other vitamins or medicines Akathisia (inability to stop moving) Panic Showering would hurt my skin Unable to lay down Dizziness Loud ringing in the ears (High frequency) Racing and violent thoughts BRAIN ZAPS (Immediate equilibrium interruption or disruption) Racing, uncontrollable thoughts unable to control emotions Inability to focus Unable to listen to music Unable to listen to music High fever Flu-like symptoms (exactly like the flu) Profuse sweating Unable to distinguish TV from reality Felt like being out of reality Anxiety Depression (due to circumstances) Hyper-sensitivity to almost everything Screaming upon waking I really didn't think I was going to survive. It has been over 4 years since then and I have had to deal with some of these symptoms, in varying degrees, since then. I made slow progress over the years but unfortunately I haven't recovered completely. Plus, since then I have been having unexplained strokes.

This expensive drug basically offers the same anti-depressant activity as the generic forms of Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil or Celexa but at a much greater price. For some unknown reason nausea remains a common, long lasting side effect. Nowhere in the barrage of televised advertising is there mention that the daily cost of the drug exceeds $10 versus $3-10 for one month of the generic versions of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

http://www.rxwiki.com/articles/news_s... Ask a pharmacist your questions now! http://www.rxwiki.com/askrx/questions Antidepressants are used to treat depression. It is very important not to suddenly stop taking an antidepressant in order to prevent discontinuation syndrome. Antidepressant discontinuation syndrome includes various symptoms such as anxiety, feelings of sadness, headaches, dizziness, and nausea and vomiting. These symptoms may occur if an antidepressant is stopped suddenly. These symptoms can occur if you have been taking an antidepressant such as paroxetine or sertraline for longer than 6 weeks and suddenly stop taking your medication. I do want to mention that antidepressants can take several weeks to become effective. Therefore, it is important not to stop taking your medication if you do not initially see a response. If you want to stop treatment and your doctor has agreed, then your doctor will gradually lower your dose until your medication is stopped. Your doctor will work with you to develop a plan to lower your dose over about two to four weeks. Generally, the antidepressant dose will be reuced by about 25% per week until the medication is stopped. It is important to let your doctor know if you are experiencing any feelings of sadness or your depression begins to worsen while your medication dose is reduced. As with any medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist any questions you may have.

Serotonin is a chemical produced by the body that enables brain cells and other nervous system cells to communicate with one another. Too little serotonin in the brain is thought to play a role in depression. Too much, however, can lead to excessive nerve cell activity, causing a potentially deadly collection of symptoms known as serotonin syndrome. Serotonin syndrome symptoms often begin within hours of taking a new medication that affects serotonin levels or excessively increasing the dose of one you are already taking. Symptoms may include: Confusion Agitation or restlessness Dilated pupils Headache Changes in blood pressure and/or temperature Nausea and/or vomiting Diarrhea Rapid heart rate Tremor Loss of muscle coordination or twitching muscles Shivering and goose bumps Heavy sweating In severe cases, serotonin syndrome can be life threatening. If you experience any of these symptoms, you or someone with you should seek medical attention immediately: High fever Seizures Irregular heartbeat Unconsciousness Serotonin syndrome can occur if you are taking medications, particularly antidepressants that affect the body's level of serotonin. The greatest risk of serotonin syndrome occurs if you are taking two or more drugs and/or supplements together that influence serotonin. The condition is more likely to occur when you first start a medicine or increase the dose. The most commonly prescribed class of antidepressants, which work by increasing serotonin, are the serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).These include citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft). Other prescription and over-the-counter drugs that can raise serotonin levels alone or in combination to cause serotonin syndrome include: Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), a class of antidepressants including desvenlafaxine (Khedezla), desvenlafaxine succinate (Pristiq), duloxetine (Cymbalta), levomilnacipran (Fetzima), and venlafaxine (Effexor). Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), a class of antidepressants including isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate), and transdermal selegiline (EMSAM) Buspirone (BuSpar), a drug used to treat anxiety disorders Desyrel ( Trazodone ), a drug prescribed for depression or insomnia Migraine treatments such as almotriptan (Axert), Amerge (naratriptan), rizatriptan (Maxalt), sumatriptan (Imitrex), and zolmitriptan (Zomig) Certain pain medications, including fentanyl (Sublimaze, Fentora), fentanyl citrate (Actiq), meperidine (Demerol), pentazocine (Talwin), and tramadol (Ultram) Dextromethorphan , a cough suppressant found in many over-the-counter and prescription cough medicines or cold medicines Certain medications prescribed for nausea, such as granisetron (Kytril), metoclopramide (Reglan), and ondansetron (Zofran) Antidepressants that affect multiple serotonin receptors, such as vortioxetine (Trintellix -formerly Brintellix) and vilazodone (Viibryd) Some illegal drugs, such as LSD and cocaine, and dietary supplements, including St. John's wort and ginseng, can also lead to serotonin syndrome when combined with antidepressants that affect serotonin. The FDA recently asked drug manufacturers to include warning labels on their products to let patients know about the potential risk of serotonin syndrome. If you are uncertain about drugs you take or have been prescribed, check the label or speak with your doctor. Don't stop any medication before talking to your doctor. Serotonin Syndrome Diagnosis There is no single test to diagnose serotonin syndrome. Your health care provider will ask about your medical history, including medication, supplement, and recreational drug use, and perform a physical exam. Other conditions may cause symptoms that are similar to serotonin syndrome. Lab tests to exclude other causes of symptoms may be ordered. Serotonin Syndrome Treatments People with serotonin syndrome are typically hospitalized for observation and treatment of symptoms. For example, benzodiazepines are given to treat agitation and/or seizures. Intravenous fluids are given to maintain hydration. Removing the drug responsible for the serotonin syndrome is critical. Hydration by intravenous (IV) fluids) is also common. In severe cases, a medication called cyproheptadine (Periactin) that blocks serotonin production may be used. http://bit.ly/yourfreehealthreport The Real Story about Antidepressants that Cause Weight Loss I speaking with a friend of mine I have come to find out about hwo many poeple are looking for the added benefit of using antidepressants that cause weight loss. In my research I have found that using antidepressants and expecting to lose weight has a mixed bag of results. First off using an antidepressant for weight loss is not a healthy option, the side effect seem to be the major cause of weight loss and if you like loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting well then that would be a major issue. Listen we all want to feel good, physically , mentally and emotionally and yes at times ant time the use of an antidepressant might have to be but it should only be a temporary solution and not a life long sentence. It is the same with weight loss. Yes your weight, and your health both emotionally and physically might fluctuate at times but we should always do our best to give our body and mind the proper nutrition , exercise and other natural input to create an environment where the body will thrive. In the process of coaching people on health I do not recommend people using prescription drugs but instead a more natural process to obtain ultimate health . Antidepressant and weight loss are not the best prescription for a healthy life and if that is what you are looking for it might just take a focused approached to create a healthier lifestyle which would in turn give you both, and better emotional feeling about life . Know that food and exercise, believe it or not , have a dramatic effect on both your physical , mental and emotional health . So in conclusion my opinion based on my nutrition and health studies and my research on antidepressants that cause weight loss is don't rely on them because the results will vary based upon your body type and chemistry but instead rely more so on creating a healthy life style and in turn you will lose the weight and feel great emotionally . At least I still have my humor. I talk about the withdrawal process I have endured and the stuff that your doctor will fail to tell you. Frankly, I have had thoughts that I never thought I would have. Horrible, scary thoughts that I liken to being on a bad acid trip. Basically my thoughts were pushing me towards an insanity that I went on these medications to stop. This video is to serve as a warning about all anti depressants in general. The government or pharma companies don't seem to give two fucks about warning people of these dangers, so I will. My experience on Mirtazapine was great at first. It helped with my insomnia. But as the months continued and my waist line grew I knew it was time to stop. I am sure this medication is really helpful to many, as most drugs can be, but this is my story of them. Thanks for listening.

This is a video I did when I first attempted to quit Effexor.. it is real and not fake... pretty scary! My Horrible Nightmares - Recorded Live - Effexor Medication Withdrawal & Brain Zaps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqoV_... Info on not taking Venafaxine and the possible adverse side effects Venlafaxine is a widely used serotonin- and norepinephrine-reuptake inhibitor-type antidepressant that causes serious adverse effects in at least 5% of cases. Serious withdrawal symptoms may occur within hours of cessation or reduction of the usual dosage and may affect motor and coordination skills to such a degree that patients should be explicitly urged either to adhere to a strict medication routine or not to drive a car. Recent clinical evidence about withdrawal symptoms is presented that may indicate incidents in noradrenergic activity irrespective of dosage. Serotonin, Noradrenaline Withdrawal Venlafaxine hydrochloride (Effexor, Dobupal) is a phenylethylamine-derivative antidepressant and anxiolytic agent that acts as a serotonin- and noradrenaline-reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). It is used primarily in major depressive disorder, with labeled uses including generalized anxiety disorder and social phobia. Nonlabeled uses include depressive symptom remission, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and chronic pain syndromes. Most selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and SSNRIs are reported to cause serious adverse effects in approximately 5% of patients, according to its manufacturer. Venlafaxine is no exception. Among the adverse effects are a number of withdrawal symptoms that form "discontinuance syndromes," sometimes mistakenly identified with what Sternbach in 1991 proposed as the "serotonin syndrome". Venlafaxine's half-life is only 4 hours. Its primary metabolite, O-desmethylvenlafaxine, has a half-life of 10 hours. In the past 10 years, a number of clinical reports of severe venlafaxine withdrawal symptoms have been published, and for the most part these effects are duly reflected in generally available information. Widely consulted drug information services, such as Medscape DrugInfo, American Hospital Formulary Service Drug Information, and First DataBank, list the following withdrawal symptoms as "serious": agitation, anorexia, anxiety, confusion, impaired coordination, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, dysphoric mood, fasciculation, fatigue, headaches, hypomania, insomnia, nausea, nervousness, nightmares, sensory disturbances (including shock-like electrical sensations), somnolence, sweating, tremor, vertigo, and vomiting. Recent Case Histories: Withdrawal Effects Are Not Dose-Dependent Case 1: Standard Dose. Female, white, age 35, no other pathologies, diagnosed for major depressive disorder with anger attacks. Treated with extended-release venlafaxine 150 mg for 4 months with concurrent psychotherapy, with positive results: Beck's Depression Inventory score reduced from 38 to 14; functionality restored. The patient ran out of medication on a Thursday and could not get in touch with her doctor until the next Monday. On Friday, only 12 hours after the usual time of taking the medication, she felt a noticeable change in mood, dizziness, and nausea. She experienced a sensation in her head as if electrical discharges "popped" and could not concentrate to the extent that she was unable to drive her car back from where she had gone. By Friday evening (18 hours after cessation), the "popping" in her head had become worse and she vomited after dinner. Depression symptoms reappeared acutely, and she could not stop crying. At first, she did not equate these symptoms to the missed dose of venlafaxine, but thought she might have contracted the flu. However, the symptoms continued and intensified over the weekend and only reduced when, on Monday, she started again on venlafaxine. She was inadvertently given the lower dose of 75 mg, which did not quite restore her mood to the previous level, although the "electrical popping" sensation in her head stopped and the nausea was reduced. Case 2: High Dose. (Provided by J. Garcia Campayo, MD, PhD, Dept of Psychiatry, Miguel Servet Hospital, University of Zaragoza, Spain) Female, white, age 43, first diagnosis of major depressive disorder of moderate intensity; maternal history of depressive disorder. Successfully treated with 225 mg of venlafaxine (75-75-75) for 12 months with no adverse effects. The patient decided she could do without the medication and stopped taking it abruptly. Withdrawal effects appeared within a day and included headaches, dizziness, and instability, with a sense of losing balance (although she did not actually fall down), sense of sparks and electrical discharges in her head, and intense anxiety. When treatment at the original level was reinstated and progressively reduced over a period of 2 weeks, the symptoms disappeared.
