What Is Depakote? | Epilepsy

01:58
Watch more Epilepsy & Seizure Disorders videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/502050-What-Is-Depakote-Epilepsy Depakote or Valproic Acid has been around since the 1970's and used for the treatment of epilepsy. It is also known by other names including: Depakene, its generic name is Valproic Acid, there’s also a brand called Stavzor and it’s called other names in other countries. It’s a great anti-seizure medication because it’s indicated for both generalized seizures, where the brain starts firing at both sides at the same time. Focal seizures that start in one area and spread. It works in an interesting mechanism more on gaba receptors to help prevent the brain from having seizures. And again, as Pat has mentioned, it’s been around for a long time with very good response rates. Side effects with Depakote include things like weight gain, some people can have an increased appetite and gain weight on it. There can be some hair thinning or hair loss, there can be liver issues, so we check liver function when we’re checking the levels of the Depakote. That’s one of the medications that you really do need to check blood levels every once and a while. So, basically, liver, hair and increased appetite are the main side effects. It does have an FDA black box warning, so you can have basically, an allergic reaction to it. Where it can affect your liver enzymes, it can affect your red cell count, your white cell count. So as Patty mentioned, it needs to be checked, but that shouldn’t stop you from using it. It’s a strong, effective medication with a good response. As far as the side effects, a lot of them can be monitored, such as hair loss. You can use certain shampoos like, Selsun Blue, take vitamins such as zinc to prevent some of the cosmetic issues that can happen. And again, the side effects don’t occur in everybody. Depakote is a really well-tolerated medication for both generalized and focal epilepsy. Side effects include: increased appetite, liver issues and hair loss or hair thinning. That can be monitored with blood tests.

This expensive drug basically offers the same anti-depressant activity as the generic forms of Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil or Celexa but at a much greater price. For some unknown reason nausea remains a common, long lasting side effect. Nowhere in the barrage of televised advertising is there mention that the daily cost of the drug exceeds $10 versus $3-10 for one month of the generic versions of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

I already take Trintellix. She is going to add a couple other drugs, in the future, to include an older anti-psychotic medication.

I wanted to do a follow-up Geodon review. Geodon is the name brand of ziprasidone. I want to cover Geodon side effects aka ziprasidone side effects. I took it for my bipolar disorder since other bipolar medication didn't seem to help stop the shadow people or audio hallucinations. It is an antipsychotic usually prescribed for schizophrenia and to deal with bipolar depression and mania. A.k.a. manic-depression. I had to stop taking it because Geodon withdrawal is probably the worst thing I've ever experienced. Fluoxetine, also known by trade names Prozac and Sarafem among others, is an antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class.[2] It is used for the treatment of major depressive disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia nervosa, panic disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. It may decrease the risk of suicide in those over the age of 65. Fluoxetine has also been used to treat premature ejaculation. It is taken by mouth.[2] Common side effects include trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, dry mouth, rash, and abnormal dreams. Serious side effects include serotonin syndrome, mania, seizures, an increased risk of suicidal behavior in people under 25 years old, and an increased risk of bleeding. If stopped suddenly a withdrawal syndrome may occur with anxiety, dizziness, and changes in sensation.[2] It is unclear if it is safe in pregnancy. If already on the medication it may be reasonable to continue during breastfeeding.[5] Its mechanism of action is not entirely clear but believed to be related to increasing serotonin activity in the brain.[2] Fluoxetine was discovered by Eli Lilly and Company in 1972, and entered medical use in 1986.[6] It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system.[7] It is available as a generic medication.[2] The wholesale cost in the developing world is between 0.01 and 0.04 USD per day as of 2014.[8] In the United States it costs about 0.85 USD per day.[2]

What is ANTICONVULSANT? What does ANTICONVULSANT mean? ANTICONVULSANT meaning - ANTICONVULSANT pronunciation -ANTICONVULSANT definition - ANTICONVULSANT explanation - How to pronounce ANTICONVULSANT? Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Anticonvulsants (also commonly known as antiepileptic drugs or as antiseizure drugs) are a diverse group of pharmacological agents used in the treatment of epileptic seizures. Anticonvulsants are also increasingly being used in the treatment of bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder, since many seem to act as mood stabilizers, and for the treatment of neuropathic pain. Anticonvulsants suppress the rapid and excessive firing of neurons during seizures. Anticonvulsants also prevent the spread of the seizure within the brain. Some investigators have observed that anticonvulsants themselves may cause reduced IQ in children. However these adverse effects must be balanced against the significant risk epileptic seizures pose to children and the distinct possibility of death and devastating neurological sequelae secondary to seizures. Anticonvulsants are more accurately called antiepileptic drugs (abbreviated "AEDs"), and are often referred to as antiseizure drugs because they provide symptomatic treatment only and have not been demonstrated to alter the course of epilepsy. Conventional antiepileptic drugs may block sodium channels or enhance ?-aminobutyric acid (GABA) function. Several antiepileptic drugs have multiple or uncertain mechanisms of action. Next to the voltage-gated sodium channels and components of the GABA system, their targets include GABAA receptors, the GAT-1 GABA transporter, and GABA transaminase. Additional targets include voltage-gated calcium channels, SV2A, and ?2?. By blocking sodium or calcium channels, antiepileptic drugs reduce the release of excitatory glutamate, whose release is considered to be elevated in epilepsy, but also that of GABA. This is probably a side effect or even the actual mechanism of action for some antiepileptic drugs, since GABA can itself, directly or indirectly, act proconvulsively. Another potential target of antiepileptic drugs is the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha. The drug class was the 5th-best-selling in the US in 2007. Some anticonvulsants have shown antiepileptogenic effects in animal models of epilepsy. That is, they either prevent the development of epilepsy or can halt or reverse the progression of epilepsy. However, no drug has been shown in human trials to prevent epileptogenesis (the development of epilepsy in an individual at risk, such as after a head injury).

What is Extended-release Levetiracetam?

01:47
Heidi Barnes Heller, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology), clinical associate professor of neurology/neurosurgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, conducted a study on the efficacy of extended release levetiracetam in cats. Here, she explains how the drug works. "Extended-release are the ones that we give as a pill they are formulated by pharmaceutical companies into a certain formulation that allows them to have extended release properties. They're taken orally but they are extended release because they are more slowly released into the body, in theory, thus allowing you to provide a lower dosing frequency—so the interval between dosing is less. So going from a standard release, which is not extended release, that's 3 times a day dosing, we've been able to go down to once a day dosing use an extended release pill in cats for this particular drug, which is called levetiracetam. It is a pre formulated drug made by the pharmaceutical company, if you modify it, break it, chew it, crush it, you ruin or disrupt the extended release. So you have to be careful how you handle those pills. That also means that there's only several sizes made and a cat is wee tiny, so up until this point, we really haven't used extended release for cats because they oftentimes don't fit the dosing size for that particular milligram. And so for example, we'll use extended release levetiracetam in cats and the dose they should be taking for an average or maybe slightly large, 5 kilogram cat would be something in the range of 50 to 60 milligrams three times a day, and so that's about 20 milligrams per kilogram is the dose that we use. To use extended release they're getting about a 100 milligrams per kilogram, which is 500 milligrams per dose, so a significantly higher dose but it extends out how its released and so you don't have as much of a worry about toxicity, at least in our studies."
