What's it Like Being a Therapist?

12:33
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy How I became a therapist, what a day in the life of a therapist is like, how do people react when they find out I’m a therapist (funniest or weirdest one), how I practice self care, studying for GREs taking licensing exams etc. Undergrad (4 years) majored in psychology (and at first double major in music, but had to drop it in order to graduate on time). Grad school (2 years) my program was called “masters in clinical psychology with an emphasis on marriage and family therapy” (talk about clinical and how that’s different than other degrees, research driven etc) Gathering 3000 hours! Took me 5 years (you have up to 6 before you start losing them) each state and country will be different - must have a certain number of group hours, child hours, individual, etc Studying and taking licensing exam - 2 parts, first is only multiple choice, and I think it was 280 questions and I had 4 hours to take it (Just pulling from my memory, and I know it’s changed since I took it). Second part was clinical vignettes, so you have to read the vignette, assess, and figure out how you can best treat that person. You must past the second exam within a year of taking the first or you have to start over. And if you fail (I didn’t but many do) then you have to wait 6 months before you can take it again. Specializations should only come from specific work and training - Not just taking a CEU (continuing education unit - you need 36 hour every 2 years to keep your license). What’s a day in the life? - depends on where you work, hospital (groups, individual, SO many files and SO much paperwork), inpatient, day programs, etc) What’s my day like now? Very different. Only in my private practice a couple of days a week, and I spend the rest of my time researching and filming, answering questions, etc. How do people react when they find out I’m a therapist? They overshare, or want me to diagnose someone in their life who’s giving them trouble. I usually don’t tell people what I do. Also, in general people just like to tell me all of their problems. It can make going out with people exhausting, so I’ve gotten really good at changing the subject, and hanging out with my friends who are also mental health professionals. How do I practice self care? - Boundaries!!! Also, yoga, going for walks, taking the weekends off, getting outside, spending time with friends and family! In my off time from being a therapist, I like to watch movies... This one is something I am really looking forward to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhwktRDG_aQ I watched these in my off time this week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRz0WRaQwmw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enuVYhqN3JI A few of my videos about similar topics Pros and Cons of being a Therapist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucs40UTep_w How to become a mental health professional https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2e0BJwnTfk Therapy sessions from a therapist's perspective! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-47TA1N6i3s If you want to add translations, click the gear icon and go to Subtitles/CC then to Add subtitles or CC! What is MENTAL HEALTH? What does MENTAL HEALTH mean? MENTAL HEALTH meaning, definition & explanation

04:07
What is MENTAL HEALTH? What does MENTAL HEALTH mean? MENTAL HEALTH meaning, definition & explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Mental health is a level of psychological well-being, or an absence of mental illness. It is the "psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioral adjustment". From the perspective of positive psychology or holism, mental health may include an individual's ability to enjoy life, and create a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health includes "subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, inter-generational dependence, and self-actualization of one's intellectual and emotional potential, among others." The WHO further states that the well-being of an individual is encompassed in the realization of their abilities, coping with normal stresses of life, productive work and contribution to their community. Cultural differences, subjective assessments, and competing professional theories all affect how "mental health" is defined. A widely accepted definition of health by mental health specialists is psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud's definition: the capacity "to work and to love" - considered to be a simple and more accurate definition of mental health. According to the U.S. surgeon general (1999), mental health is the successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and providing the ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity. The term mental illness refers collectively to all diagnosable mental disorders—health conditions characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, or behavior associated with distress or impaired functioning. A person struggling with his or her mental health may experience stress, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, grief, addiction, ADHD or learning disabilities, mood disorders, or other mental illnesses of varying degrees. Therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioners or physicians can help manage mental illness with treatments such as therapy, counseling, or medication. Mental illnesses are categorized as follows: Neurosis: Also known as psychoneuroses, neuroses are minor mental illnesses like phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and anxiety disorders, among others. Psychosis: Psychoses are major mental illnesses in which the mental state impairs thoughts, perception and judgement. Delusions and hallucinations are marked symptoms. This may require the use of psychotic drugs as well as counselling techniques in order to treat them. Mental health is also used as a consumerist euphemism for mental illness, especially when used in conjunction with "concerns", "problems", or "clinic". Consequently, "mental health" is now being equated with mental illness without reference to the positive strengths associated with mental health. Similarly, the term "behavioral health" is being used, incorrectly, to refer to mental illness, as a consumerist approach to avoiding the stigma associated with the words "mental" and "illness". Consequently, some mental illness clinics are now identified by the inaccurate phrase behavioral wellness. The new field of global mental health is "the area of study, research and practice that places a priority on improving mental health and achieving equity in mental health for all people worldwide."

What's the DIFFERENCE? Choosing YOUR Mental Health Professional

12:20
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy Today I define what a counselor, licensed professional counselor, therapist, social worker, psychologist, and psychiatrist are. When you are struggling with depression, anxiety, an eating disorder, or other various mental health issues; it can be hard to know who to get help from. I talk about their level of schooling and what they are able to do in practice, and how it will feel different to someone going to see them for help. As you will hear, most of these mental health professionals do very similar things, and to you (the client) it won’t feel much different. Licensed Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Social Workers, and Psychologist pretty much do the same thing. They will see you in their office for 50 minutes, listen to you and offer some helpful tools and techniques. The most important thing to remember when picking a mental health professional is that you like them, feel they hear you and understand you, and you know you are working together to get better. That’s it! It doesn’t really matter how much schooling they had or how long they have been practicing, you just need to like them. I also think it’s important to know what their specialties are so that you know you are getting the help you need most. I hear from many of you that feeling like you aren’t getting any better or being given helpful tools can be really frustrating! Finding someone who specializes in what you are struggling with can help lessen the likelihood of that happening. I hope you found this helpful! I know finding the right professional can be scary, difficult, and often confusing. I hope this video helped clear up any confusion around who can do what and who we can look to for help. Mental health and criminal justice | Crystal Dieleman | TEDxMoncton

08:25
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The news media focuses on tragic and violent events involving people with mental illnesses and, as a result, the public has an exaggerated view of the relationship between mental illness and violence, as well as their own personal risk of being harmed by someone who has a mental illness. But what is the reality for people with mental illnesses who become involved with the criminal justice system? If this is both a public health and public safety concern, what role do we, the general public, have in promoting mental health and preventing or reducing crime? Crystal Dieleman is an occupational therapist and assistant professor at Dalhousie University. Her passion is mental health and criminal justice. She started her career as an occupational therapist in the psychiatric treatment centers of the Correctional Service of Canada, working with men who have mental illnesses as they prepared to re-enter the community. She holds a PhD in Rehabilitation Science and works to understand the different factors that contribute to the criminalization of people with mental health problems and how to prevent or reduce their involvement in the criminal justice system as they transition from prison or forensic hospital back to community life. Mental Health Counselor Business Tips - Part 1 - The Entrepreneur and Your Niche

03:01
Hi, my name is Alan and I want to welcome to our YouTube Channel for Counseling Forms and Mental Health Counselor Business tips. Today starts our first in a series of business building tips for the career counselor no matter with field you are in. Part of being a successful counselor is understanding your business, today's social media and internet opportunities and how to take advantage of these tools and general business principles to make your business successful. If you like what you hear in our business tips, please click the red subscribe button below this video so you will be notified when our next video comes out. Here are today's 2 business tips for mental health counselors… 1. Awaken your entrepreneur: Michael Gerber, author of E-Myth and Awakening the Entrepreneur Within, suggests entrepreneurial dreams worth pursuing are those that are mainly impersonal to the entrepreneur. An impersonal dream is a dream that helps to meet the needs of another person rather than your own personal dreams. And that should be your main focus as a counselor. Personal dreams are defined as a means to an end that only benefit the dreamer and in the long run disappoint and leave a person wanting. Personal dreams tend to be focused on things: the bigger house, faster car, fewer wrinkles, and more bling. The impersonal dream tends to be focused on improving the lot of other people’s lives. Get out a piece of paper and write down your impersonal entrepreneurial dream. 2. Identify your niche in counseling: A niche is a specialized market as well as the specific thing you are best suited for. Success in a private practice or any business for that matter starts with developing your niche. What is it that separates you from the many other professional counselors in your local or online community? A niche develops over time, but now is the time to begin identifying and shaping your niche. What skills, knowledge, certifications, techniques or ability do you have that others will benefit from that sets you apart as unique amongst your peers? Thanks for listening to today's tips and we hope they helped you out. Stay tuned for more tips coming up soon and if you need any counseling forms or other business tips, please check out the rest of the videos in our channel. NEED INTAKE FORMS? CLICK HERE: http://IntakeForms.net/ Hi everyone, its Jean and today I want to show you all the different forms in the private practice starter kit that would be considered client intake forms. Don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel so you don’t miss any mental health counselor business tips. In this brief presentation I’ll show you the client intake forms in your private practice starter kit and share one huge Business Tip that hardy anyone else takes advantage of: 1. Phone Intake 2. Personal Information and Insurance 3. Biopsychosocial 4. Intake Assessment 5. Information and Consent 6. Release of Information First, the phone Intake – this is where it begins. A 1 page form that guides you or your secretary through the phone intake interview. TAKE note of the Referred By prompt. More about that later. Second, Personal Information and Insurance – collects all the important information to bill insurance if your client is using behavioral health benefits. Kit comes with 2 forms: one that assigns benefits to the therapist and a another that assigns benefits to the client. Third, Biopsychosocial, 5 page comprehensive biopsychosocial – this is the most important part of the intake. This form has a holistic bent to it – it covers everything from symptoms, to mental health history, nutrition, to spiritual history as well as abuse, developmental history and much more. This form will help you do a comprehensive assessment that will help begin to unfold the clients real issues so that you can collaborate with your client on an developing a treatment plan that will result in client success. Fourth, Intake Assessment, this is where you summarize your clinically important findings from the biopsychosocial and intake interview. This is also the form you use to document the mental status exam, clinical and diagnostic impressions. Fifth, Information and Consent, you cant do therapy without informed consent. This form covers all the general basis you need to inform your client of before beginning therapy. When I put together my own personal intake forms I consulted with an attorney. You may want to do the same especially regarding your Information and Consent form. But the nice thing about this form is, if you are using Microsoft word you can easily tweak it to add or delete words or segments to make it fit your own counseling philosophy. Finally, the release of information, when in the best interest of your client, use this form to get your client’s permission to speak with others about your client’s treatment Now that huge business tip: Remember the Phone Intake - Always make sure to ask how the individual was referred to you. This ties in with your business strategy. When appropriate send a thank you note each time you receive a referral…this is an important part of branding yourself and setting yourself apart in the community. Very few counselors do this. Robust forms like these one will assist you in conducting a thorough and effective intake that will get counseling started on the right foot. Thank you to BetterHelp for sponsoring this video! Generalized Anxiety Disorder is when we have excessive worry or anxiety that last for at least 6 months. This anxiety and worry can lead us to feeling restless or on edge, easily fatigued, have difficulty concentrating, irritable, tense muscles, and struggle to get a good night sleep. This anxiety and worry can lead us to feeling restless or on edge, easily fatigued, have difficulty concentrating, irritable, tense muscles, and struggle to get a good night sleep. This anxiety and worry can lead us to feeling restless or on edge, easily fatigued, have difficulty concentrating, irritable, tense muscles, and struggle to get a good night sleep. In adults, this disorder tends to be focused around worry associated with health, finances, and everyday routine life circumstances. In children, this tends to present more as worry about competence (tests and assessments) and the quality of their performance (sports games, musical performances, etc). Although the median age of onset is 30 years old, those who they spoke to stated that they had felt anxious their entire lives. The good news is that there are many treatment options! First is talk therapy and more specifically CBT. This helps us challenge those automatic/faulty thoughts so that we can slowly get back to doing the things we used to do without worry or anxiety. This can take time and lots of therapy homework, but they find CBT to be the best therapy approach. Secondly, medication. I know not everyone is open to trying medication, but they find that CBT with medication gives us the best chance of recovery. Usually, SSRI's or SNRI's (otherwise known as anti-depressants) are used first. If those don't help at certain intense moments, they may prescribe a benzodiazepine to be used only in acute situations due to its habit forming tendencies. So please be careful if you are prescribed these and do not use them every day. Lastly, there are some lifestyle changes you can make. Eating regularly and from a well-balanced diet can help. Also, cutting back on coffee and alcohol can help us sleep more soundly and get rid of any symptoms that may feel like anxiety. Getting exercise and taking time to meditate can help us better manage any of the anxiety symptoms we struggle with. I hope you found this helpful! 5 misunderstandings about Bipolar Disorder - Kati Morton treatment therapy anxiety mood stabilizers

05:56
Today I talk about the 5 common misconceptions about bipolar disorder. 1. That there are only manic or depressive episodes in bipolar disorder 2. That bipolar II is a "milder" form of bipolar disorder 3. That mood swings during the day mean you have bipolar disorder 4. That all bipolar patients have mania 5. That people with bipolar disorder are unreliable I hope this video helps clarify what bipolar disorder is and what it can look and feel like for different people. Please share this video so you can help stop the stigma and misconceptions surrounding bipolar disorder. About Bipolar disorder: Also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. Symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. They are different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through from time to time. Bipolar disorder symptoms can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide. But bipolar disorder can be treated, and people with this illness can lead full and productive lives. Most scientists agree that there is no single cause. Rather, many factors likely act together to produce the illness or increase risk. Genetics Bipolar disorder tends to run in families. Some research has suggested that people with certain genes are more likely to develop bipolar disorder than others. Children with a parent or sibling who has bipolar disorder are much more likely to develop the illness, compared with children who do not have a family history of bipolar disorder. However, most children with a family history of bipolar disorder will not develop the illness. Brain-imaging tools, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), allow researchers to take pictures of the living brain at work. These tools help scientists study the brain's structure and activity. Some imaging studies show how the brains of people with bipolar disorder may differ from the brains of healthy people or people with other mental disorders. For example, one study using MRI found that the pattern of brain development in children with bipolar disorder was similar to that in children with "multi-dimensional impairment," a disorder that causes symptoms that overlap somewhat with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. This suggests that the common pattern of brain development may be linked to general risk for unstable moods. Signs & Symptoms People with bipolar disorder experience unusually intense emotional states that occur in distinct periods called "mood episodes." Each mood episode represents a drastic change from a person’s usual mood and behavior. An overly joyful or overexcited state is called a manic episode, and an extremely sad or hopeless state is called a depressive episode. Sometimes, a mood episode includes symptoms of both mania and depression. This is called a mixed state. People with bipolar disorder also may be explosive and irritable during a mood episode. Extreme changes in energy, activity, sleep, and behavior go along with these changes in mood. Doctors diagnose bipolar disorder using guidelines from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, the symptoms must be a major change from your normal mood or behavior. There are four basic types of bipolar disorder: Bipolar I Disorder—defined by manic or mixed episodes that last at least seven days, or by manic symptoms that are so severe that the person needs immediate hospital care. Usually, depressive episodes occur as well, typically lasting at least 2 weeks. Bipolar II Disorder—defined by a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes, but no full-blown manic or mixed episodes. Bipolar Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (BP-NOS)—diagnosed when symptoms of the illness exist but do not meet diagnostic criteria for either bipolar I or II. However, the symptoms are clearly out of the person's normal range of behavior. Cyclothymic Disorder, or Cyclothymia—a mild form of bipolar disorder. People with cyclothymia have episodes of hypomania as well as mild depression for at least 2 years. However, the symptoms do not meet the diagnostic requirements for any other type of bipolar disorder. SCHIZOPHRENIA & schizoaffective disorder - Mental Health therapist Kati Morton treatment & psychosis

13:31
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy Schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder are diagnoses that are often misunderstood. Today's video will hopefully help you better understand their differences and similarities as well as what treatment options are available. Schizophrenia is a mental illness that is characterized by positive and/or negative symptoms that have lasted most days for at least 6 months. Positive symptoms are things we add to our experience. Think hallucinations because we are seeing things and hearing things that are not there. These are thing our brain has "added" to our experience. These are also delusions because these are firmly held beliefs that we used to not have. Again, we are adding something to our experience. Negative symptoms are when we are lacking something. For example, many of my schizophrenic clients had blunted affect, meaning they weren't as expressive as they wanted to be, some may have slowed speech or movement. Is this clear? See we are taking away things they used to have, like affect (facial expressiveness) and movement or speech. As for schizoaffective disorder, we must have schizophrenia like symptoms but also have a mood disorder. This is almost as if bipolar disorder and schizophrenia had a baby. We will have delusion and hallucinations but also have depression or mania. There are subtypes meaning that some people will only have depression or others will only experience dysthymia and mania without any deep depression. This is something that will have to be determined by your doctor, so that you can get the help that you need. Speaking of treatment, here are some options: 1. Medication. Medication can save your life and keep your hallucinations and delusions at bay. It can help you quiet the voices enough to work on other issues in our life and heal ourselves and our relationships. 2. Group therapy/PHP programs (partial hospitalization programs). This can help you realize you are not alone and help you hear other people's stories and what has helped them. 3. Do reality testing. Check in with others who don't struggle with schizophrenia to see if what you heard or saw was real or not. This can help us figure out if we are still hearing or seeing things and if our medication is helping us enough. I hope you found this helpful! Please share! Do YouTubers Really Understand Mental Health? The Betterhelp Legacy | TRO

40:55
The Right Opinion: Do YouTubers Really Understand Mental Health? The Betterhelp Legacy | TRO Intro: You see, I released a video on h3, I worked incredibly hard on the research that brought it together, the points I made, and I gave it a lot of thought. Explaining why I believed they had strayed from their original content and this had subsequently led them to take a break, I took a sympathetic point of view towards them, because how I felt, I think there are a lot of people on the verge of burnout. However, almost immediately I released it, I had a load of comments pointing out that h3 had got themselves in another mess less than 24 hours before, leading my video to be timed fairly inconveniently . So what was this mess? Well let’s talk about BetterHelp… Even if you’re a YouTube casual, you will have heard of BetterHelp, the online, interactive website, that promotes therapy on an accessible platform: the internet. So to give you a breakdown, if you’re a patient of this site, you sign up, and you fill out a basic form explaining what you’re looking for, and what may you may be experiencing, and what they do is that they have an extensive roster of therapists who are allegedly qualified, we’ll return to the allegedly part in a bit, anyway, they hook you up with one of these therapists. The ultimate aim? Well that’s unclear, and we’ll explain why that’s a problem in a bit, but the general aim is to improve health. But if you’ve seen the title, you’ll know that this is a video about YouTubers, so where do they factor into this very enticing plot? Well BetterHelp targeted a certain band of YouTubers, in fact, ones that I like to talk about the most. The individuals who are seen as moral bastions on the platform, this is no coincidence, these individuals have built special relationships with their fans, and unlike the Jake Pauls of this generation, they deal with mature subjects, they have a slightly more adult audience, this is the sort of thing that is perfect. And honestly the environment has been set up pretty neatly for something like this to come into play. Now, make no mistake, BetterHelp has existed for a few years, since its inception in 2013, it was always purring in the background, but recently, one of their marketing executive must have spotted an opportunity in the fertile grounds of YouTube. Which is a smart idea in principle. In the last few years, YouTube has become a lot deeper than just a place where people put on facades for the day, and I’ve spoken about that in length in the past. It just seems like a progression of the culture. Amongst a lot of the deeper topics that have popped up in the last few years, one that seems increasingly prevalent is that of “depression” and mental health, there are a multiple reasons for this. I think the online world has brought together a new set of people who find themselves away from the turmoil of their real lives, and in that escape we equally tried to find answers for the problems that we face in our minds, and one of those does come down to mental health. Depression as such is a complex topic, we need to be able to distinguish between when we may just be experiencing mood dips, and when we actually have a chemical imbalance that disposes us to be legitimately depressed. A great example of the confusion of the two was Prince EA’s video on how you’re not depressed, you just have to shut up. Also, was great to see that Prince EA made the Mental Health Awareness day, after such an inspirational set of videos. YouTubers know that speaking about depression is extremely sensitive, you can’t be seen as taking advantage of the topic, but equally we are in a culture where people are being encouraged to be open about their experiences with the condition, and often being open about these things can help others, and we certainly shouldn’t diminish that. On the other hand, we shouldn’t be seen as clickbaiting it, or taking advantage of the possible experiences of suffering to emotionally manipulate our audiences, so ironically it becomes a whole different balancing act on working out how to appear genuine, which in a way, is contrived within itself. But that’s a topic for a different time. Equally, creators who use these experiences in their videos will create a bond with the audience, often creating a shared experience, and maybe helping an individual come to terms with their own struggles, and so it made perfect sense that BetterHelp reach out to these lovely creators, who are renowned for their reputability, to promote their therapy website and help others make it through the same struggles but there’s a catch, in fact there are a lot of catches. Should I Combine Career and Mental Health Counseling?

03:30
http://thriveworks.com/counseling-private-practice-book I enjoyed listening to your recent webinar presentation today on the topic, "The Bootstrapper's Guide to building a praivate practice from scratch". It was realistic and inspiring. A few questions I have for you if you have time to answer, I would really appreciated it. Is it good to join many associations? Or just the ones that I am trying to build my skills in? Currently, I am with NCDA, ACA, and NBCC. I was going to join CALPCC.org, but still deciding. The association fees to maintain membership annually can get very expensive, so I am pondering the usefulness of these memberships. Is it good to combine career counseling and mental health counseling services in private practice? Carina

Teen Mental Health Residential Services

05:09
Rosecrance provides residential treatment for mental health disorders at our Griffin Williamson Campus. We offer treatment for the following challenges facing teens as a primary diagnosis: Mood disorder Bi-polar disorder Major depression Anxiety disorder Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Victims of abuse Self-destructive behaviors Poor impulse control Substance abuse General treatment modalities may include: personal medication management; individual and family therapies, group therapy, and recreational therapy. Two board-certified child & adolescent psychiatrists, Dr. Thomas Wright and Dr. Carol Craig, lead the team of clinicians alongside Clinical Director of Residential Services Carlene Cardosi. “There was a need in the community and we expanded to meet that need,” said Meghan Cook, Access Coordinator at Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus. “I can’t tell you how invigorating it’s been to be able to accommodate kids that we were forced to turn away before and provide them with quality care,” added Cook. “Our staff has been very diligent and intentional about rising to meet the needs of each and every individual client.” When asked about how the new program is going, Sandra Knezevic, Rosecrance Addiction Counselor, described it as exciting, challenging and fulfilling. “It means more opportunity for people to get help and get well and not have another door closed in their face,” said Knezevic. “I believe people deserve second, fourth, and even 17th chances. No life is ever worth giving up on or looking the other way.” Another staff member who is passionate about the specialized services program is Dr. Carol Craig. Craig is board certified by the American board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Her specialty areas include mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder as well as disorders of early childhood such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and developmental delay disorders. “So many of our clients have been suffering for years,” said Craig. “This program uses evidence based practices… to stabilize patients and impact change. It allows us to peel back the layers and get to the core by treating co-occurring disorders, mental health disorders and substance use disorders.” Karly Bergstrom, Unit Specialist at Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus, sees first-hand how illnesses can affect the mind and body. Karly works with other staff members to create an individualized plan for clients that need extra accommodations that may differ from the standard schedule for the day. Whether it be an extra walk through the healing garden or five minutes alone in their room listening to music, Karly ensures that each client’s unique needs are taken into consideration. “If there is a client that’s struggling due to a rough phone call or family session, I’ll pull them off the unit and we’ll take a walk or do something to help them cope. I try to get them to open up and figure out the root of the problem, why it causes so much anxiety and how we can move forward.” For a referral, please call 815.391.1000. Mental Health and Wellness of Florida Lawyers

02:07:56
This program has been approved for 2.0 hours of General CLE Credit including 1.5 hours of Mental Illness Awareness CLE Credit. Recent studies and statistics provide evidence of the problems Florida lawyers are facing. Just a fraction of the available data shows these issues can no longer be the elephant in the room. Lawyers lead the nation with the highest incidence of depression. Lawyers are 3.6 times more likely to suffer from depression than nonlawyers.1 The suicide rate of lawyers is double that of the general population.2 The ABA estimates 18 percent of all U.S. lawyers suffer from problem drinking (which is double the national average).3 Plain and simple, our profession is suffering; too many lawyers are generally unhappy. Within our Florida Bar membership alone (pursuant to the most recent membership survey in 2015): 33 percent believe high stress is a significant challenge within the profession. 32 percent believe balancing family and work is a significant challenge within the profession. 79 percent believe the legal profession is becoming a less desirable career. 36 percent have considered/are considering a different career. 92 percent experience stress. 43 percent experience a great deal of stress. 67 percent report taking two weeks or less of vacation per year. 38 percent report taking one week or less of vacation per year. How Did This Happen? We are a profession of “fixers” and problem solvers, and with that comes an inherent amount of stress and anxiety. We deal with high emotions from our clients and co‐workers. Law is adversarial by nature, and the results of our professional efforts are often beyond our control. Clients rarely, if ever, call us to share a good day; instead, we are generally the first line of defense in dealing with their problems and crises. These elements are further exacerbated by personality traits that dominate our profession, such as our “warrior mentality,” self‐reliance, and perfectionism. Commencing in law school, we are taught to use words and trial skills to frame our arguments and defend our positions. This warrior mentality persists in law firm cultures, which often rewards a win‐at‐all‐costs philosophy. This provides attorneys with the unique ability to deny we have any problems and successfully convince others of the same. We must change this philosophy from the ground up. Attorneys are trained to anticipate everything that can go wrong. This forward‐looking, but often pessimistic, outlook is a component of what our profession deems prudent. In fact, the legal profession is unique in that pessimists out‐perform optimists. However, it’s hard to turn off this pessimistic outlook in our everyday life, and what makes for a good lawyer does not necessarily make for a happy human being. Even worse is that the individualistic nature of our profession seems to cause a reluctance to seek help for depression and mental‐health issues due to concerns of stigma or appearing weak. This is where The Florida Bar comes in. It is time to start tackling these issues head‐on by openly discussing and thinking more holistically about mental illness in the legal profession. The statistical evidence cited above underscores a need for the expansion of attorney‐specific prevention and treatment interventions. Without the right resources, coping strategies, and aid for our physical and mental health, this crisis will not improve. That is why The Florida Bar is focused on giving much‐needed aid to our lawyers. Our speakers will each give a dynamic 15‐20‐minute TED‐style talk on one area of mental or physical health to offer solutions that our members can incorporate into their lives to begin to improve their mental health and wellbeing. Defense Mechanisms in Therapy

11:04
http://www.cornerstoneclinic.ca – Want to learn how about Defense Mechanisms in Therapy? Then watch this video by Halifax Psychologist, Brad Peters. Brad describes the two main aspects of a defense mechanism: 1) they are denials or distortions of reality, and 2) they operate unconsciously (outside of our awareness). Their main function is to relieve psychological tension and anxiety about some distressing event or situation by avoidance. Examples include: repression, denial, and intellectualization. Brad gives an example of how such defense mechanisms might present in therapy and how a psychologist would work with a client from a psychodynamic perspective. I haven't read them yet, however whatever is in there sure made my assistant turn beet red 🤣 why am i surprised? this is my subbies we're talking about right?! haha! Oh! and if you've been curious about any of the decks I use on the channel or personally recommend check out my new Amazon store! https://www.amazon.com/shop/shedootareaux ************* Welcome to your November 9th-11th weekend reading! In this reading we’ll be using a combo of tarot and oracle cards to reveal the energies and influences around you for this weekend! I guess this is the Pre-read for SheDoo answers? lol love your face! 😘 ************** Did that reading hit home? Book a personal session with me here👇🏽 https://www.She-Doo.com ************** My readings apply to Sun, Moon, Rising, Cusps, & sometimes Venus...& N.node & 10th house & Mars...lol it really depends on what I’m reading for... I also believe if you resonate with the title it can definitely be for you as well...I’d assume Vedic astrology applies as well as I’ve recently discovered my Vedic sun is Aries and I’ve always ironically resonated with Aries readings... ************** DISCLAIMER: All content produced for this channel was created for informational purposes only. Even though I am a Board Certified & practicing therapist my readings should NEVER be used in lieu of seeking professional mental health advice and formal diagnosis & treatment. Always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified mental health professional in your area with any questions you may have regarding a mental health condition. Never disregard professional medical/mental health advice or delay in seeking it because of something you have heard in a general reading. **************** Mental Health Resources If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, you are not alone. Many people experience similar struggles, and there are resources available to help. During a crisis, you might feel like things will never change. Contacting a mental health crisis hotline is a good way to begin reaching out for much-needed support. But if you are afraid that you or someone you know might hurt themselves or someone else, call 911 immediately. If you think you or someone you love may be struggling with a mental health disorder, call one of these numbers to learn more about various mental health conditions and connect with valuable resources near you. * National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) If mental health difficulties are leading you to consider suicide or think about death often, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s national network of local crisis centers. This 24-hour hotline is available to anyone in crisis and provides free and confidential emotional support and crisis intervention. * Crisis Text Line: Text “home” to 741741 This unique hotline is available via text message to anyone experiencing mental health difficulties or an emotional crisis. Highly trained counselors offer support and guidance to calm you down and make sure you are safe. * Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Helpline: 1-800-662-HELP (4357) If you’re ready to seek professional treatment for your mental health condition, SAMHSA’s helpline and web-based behavioral health treatment services locator can help you find information about treatment providers, therapists counselors, support groups, and community resources in your area. * National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Helpline: 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) The NAMI Helpline is available Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST to answer your general questions about mental health issues and treatment options.
