It's well tolerated, it's used for generalized, impartial seizures. It's available both in pills that can be crushed or it's available in an oral formulation, so a liquid for small children. Dr. Steve Wolf: The major side effects is sedation. Patty: Right. Dr. Wolf: Sleepiness. It can cause a little bit of an increased appetite and weight gain, so you need to monitor that very closely. Though it's also useful for patients who are having trouble sleeping at night. It already helps to sort of increase the sleep control. Patty: And actually we use it a lot for people who are having difficulties sleeping. It's also used for pain, for neuropathic pain. Dr. Wolf: So it's a good medication Another option in our armory of people with difficult to control seizures but not one of your first line kind of drugs. Patty: So Neurontin or gabapentin, third or fourth line drug for control of generalized, impartial seizures. A big side effect is drowsiness. It's also used for pain and it's well tolerated for the most part.

Neurontin, Gabapentin and Lyrica is a Death sentence to new brain synapses and can lead to suicidal thoughts http://fibromyalgiaresources.com/neurontin-lyrica-death-sentence-new-brain-synapses/ and http://medsnews.com/health/neurontin-and-lyrica-two-treatments-for-pain-that-can-lead-to-suicidal-thoughts/ If you aren’t on this medication, chances are you know someone who is. It’s used to treat everything from pain to mood disorders and can be just what the doctor ordered for many. But now, there is mounting research uncovering misuse of and even a black market for this popular prescription. We’re talking about gabapentin. It’s approved for some types of seizures and nerve pain. Doctors also use it off-label to treat everything from insomnia to migraines to anxiety. Sixty-four million prescriptions of it were sold in the U.S. in 2016, up more than 60% from four years earlier. The thing is, experts say there is growing evidence it’s being abused, too. It’s even being sold on the streets under the name “Johnnys.” Dr. Joseph Insler, an addiction psychiatrist, says he’s seeing it all too often. “Sometimes, I've even experienced patients ask me for their “Johnnys” and then they'll, maybe, catch themselves and say, ‘No, no, no. I mean gabapentin',” he says. Why is this prescription being misused? “I think that some individuals may say that they use it to get high, and others may say they use it and get a drowsy effect. So, we're talking about the euphoria versus sedation, “ says Rachel Vickers Smith, Ph.D. Dr Vickers Smith wrote her dissertation on gabapentin abuse when studying drug abusers in Appalachia. “We found a nearly 3000 percent increase from 2008 to about 2014 in individuals reporting gabapentin abuse for the purposes of getting high,” she says. We wanted to see for ourselves, so we searched online. We easily found people talking about taking “Johnnys”, or gabapentin, to get high. There were also threads of people trying to spread awareness about the abuse. Experts say gabapentin is typically misused by substance abusers who mix it with other drugs. But, Dr. Insler says it’s also possible for people with legitimate prescriptions to misuse, too. He says, “If somebody’s taking excessively high doses or needing early refills” or if their mood changes, family members or clinicians should see these signs as red flags. A growing body of research shows the problem of abuse, especially among substance abusers is clear. But some experts also worry about the number of prescriptions being handed out. A recent New England Journal of Medicine letter warned that “clinicians who are desperate for alternatives to opioids” are “increasingly prescribing gabapentin” and that “evidence suggests that some patients misuse, abuse or divert gabapentin.” http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp1704633?rss=mostEmailed&#t=article Dr Rachel Vickers Smith says, “ I think that's why it's really important to get out the message,” about abuse, in general. Gabapentin is not a controlled substance or scheduled drug on the Federal level. We reached out to several government agencies. There was little information on potential abuse although the National Institute on Drug Abuse pointed us to existing research and the DEA says it is beginning to receive calls. Dr Vickers Smith says, “ I don't think that gabapentin abuse is on the CDC, DEA’s, NIDA’s radar, in part because we had this opioid epidemic.” All experts we talked to stress that this is NOT the next opioid epidemic, but they believe gabapentin abuse is something to watch closely and believe more research is needed. We contacted two of the manufacturers of gabapentin, including Pfizer, which told us, “Gabapentin is an important treatment option for their approved indications”.

Gabapentin/Neurontin, is a medication used primarily for seizure disorders and pain associated with the nerves. It can be used for nerve pain related to the herpes virus or shingles. It is also commonly used by diabetics who have suffered nerve pain. I find that this medication continues to work wonder for me, even after daily use for 3+ years. It helps prevent my migraines (at least it seems to) and once I have one, it helps the dull the pain. It also has help with occasional back pain problems. It has been a life saver for my insomnia. I am able to cope better with my day to day task because this medication helps me cope with my Clinical Depression, of which has haunted me since the passing of my father. There is no such thing as a miracle pill or a miracle cure for anything, but this medication has been a huge help for me over the years. Thanks for reading/watching my video.

Why is it that when I made a podcast a few months ago, I received more that a few reports stating that Gabapentin was terrible, the worst thing you could take, avoid it at all costs and much more. Tell me, what would be the alternative? Not being able to join the workforce? Not being able to go out visiting and enjoying life? Not being able to go to the social functions that you used to enjoy like you Church, Weddings, Graduations, Birthday parties? Not being able to walk for more than just a few minutes before disabling pain forced you to go back home and not get any kind of exercise? I am very curios as to what drugs out there work better than Gabapentin? If there is one, let me know and I will do a follow up podcast on it and tell all of my viewers that I was completely wrong, but for me, Gabapentin has given me mobility, strength, social activities, my own business and more.

Can you get high on gabapentin | Gabapentin High Experience Subscribe To Get New Videos Daily: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi1zZ8_Q7yqKInXImLCLfXw EFFECT OF GABAPENTIN ON THE BRAIN: Gabapentin is a drug used primarily to treat symptoms like seizures and epilepsies. It has also been approved by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States. The drug has been promoted under the brands Horizant, and Neurontin. The drug is sometimes used as a pain reliever for neurotic pain caused by some diseases like shingles. However, unlike other pain relievers, Gabapentin is neither an opiate nor a narcotic. Hence, the threat of its abuse or misuse has been disregarded for years. Nevertheless, drug agencies are starting to get alarmed by reports that this once thought to be harmless drug is starting to become a nationwide problem. Data have shown that there may be a growing trend in the recreational of Gabapentin. EUPHORIC EFFECTS OF GABAPENTIN: Some Gabapentin users have reported that by taking a high dosage of the drug, one can have a similar “high” effect as marijuana. There are also some testimonies that the drug has helped them become more sociable in large groups of people. Another potential effect of Gabapentin is a sense of relaxation, or sedation which attracts many drug abusers. When used alongside other depressants, a user can experience high levels of sedation. This is not recommended as it may result in deadly side effects such as cardiac arrest if done improperly. Gabapentin has a low toxicity level compared to other drugs like heroin or morphine. However, there have been instances that people taking the drug for recreational purposes resulted in an overdose. Why IS THE RECREATIONAL USE OF GABAPENTIN BECOMING POPULAR? Since it was approved as a pain reliever for the pain caused by shingles in 2002, the prescription and purchase of Gabapentin has increased exponentially. Many blame the lack of restrictions on the drug. However, some argue that there may be other factors affecting its popularity among recreational users. Here are some possible reasons why the drug’s recreational use have been increasing in the past years: Affordability: Gabapentin is significantly cheaper compared to other abused drugs. The average cost of each pill will cost a person merely 60 cents. It can also be bought in varying dosages such as 100 mg, 300 mg, and 400 mg. Drug Withdrawal: Some doctors prescribe Gabapentin to persons undergoing drug rehabilitation to combat some of the withdrawal symptoms that they are experiencing. Sadly, some people end up shifting their addiction to Gabapentin instead. Accessibility: Being non-narcotic Gabapentin is not classified as a controlled substance by the FDA. Thus, anyone can obtain it with a simple prescription from their doctor. Lesser Side Effects: While Gabapentin may have lesser side effects compared to other drugs, it worth noting that there still have been instances where patients died due to overdose. Gabapentin is seen as a miracle drug by some people experiencing seizures and epilepsies. Some may have found a recreational use for it; however, it is still highly unadvisable to abuse it. Always consult your doctor before taking this drug, and remember only to take as much as your doctor has prescribed you. Neurontin(gabapention) was the worst hell going off of I have ever been thru! I tapered down like I had read to do online since my dr. wouldn't help me. I was on a dose of like 2 pills 3 times a day. I forget the exact dosing and that was for a yr or so.It is dangerous and I do NOT suggest doing it on your own! Zoloft was the same deal of tapering down. Both took 5 weeks of time to withdrawal off. Took a good year to recover from the withdrawals of both of these. God bless my kids for going this with me. Doctors need to educate themselves more! the other drug I mention in this video is Provigil a nasty little drug(legal speed) which works for a few days then turns u paranoid, and uptight, and it's awful! For me it was. At first you see that it keeps u awake and u think great! Since with CFS u r so exhausted and want to sleep, but it doesn't waken your mind, then I couldn't relax, couldn't sleep, was paranoid.

Gabapentin needs be nicknamed the "Suicide Drug". Click on the link to read why Gabapentin drives people to either fixate on suicide or ultimately to commit suicide. Gabapentin doubles the risk of suicide. Yet physicians rarely tell their patients this. Even if their patient becomes depressed. Why ? https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.peoplespharmacy.com/posts/gabapentin-for-pain-drove-patient-to-brink-of-suicide?client=safari IMPORTANT UPDATE: It is ESSENTIAL that anyone wanting to stop taking Neurontin or Gabapentin or Horizant or Lyrica, taper slowly off. Doctors & pharmacies do NOT give you the correct info on how to safely go off & in fact, are amazing ignorant of the additional symptoms that appear when going off of it. I dare every single patient on this drug to ask their physician if a slow taper is necessary & they will all tell you no. It's not necessary. THEY ARE WRONG. But as all physician continue to insist this drug is so safe, trust your physician at the risk of your own life. Physicians are not even reporting the symptoms reported by their patients as they discount the symptoms & instead diagnose the patient with a whole new diagnosis. Always accompanied by ANOTHER medication. This is not an isolated phenomena as ALL doctors I have dealt with have failed to recognize the power & danger of this drug. For 16 years. MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS WILL DISMISS EVERY SYMPTOM YOU REPORT ON THIS DRUG. YOU WILL BE ON YOUR OWN IF YOU ASK YOUR PHYSICIAN FOR HELP IN TITERING OFF. Trust the "medical professionals" at your own risk when it comes to Neurontin or Gabapentin or Horizant or Lyrica. The Pfizer & Parke-Davis drug reps have for lack of a better term, SEDUCED physicians into thinking these are "wonder drugs." And you will end up in wonder alrighty. Wondering how you COULD SUFFER SO MUCH & SO MANY "MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS" missed & ignored what so many patients are telling them. It is horrific enough to be tortured by a medication, but to be more or less gaslighted by the "medical professionals" who will then continue to insist to you that it is not the the Gabapentin (or Neurontin or Horizant or Lyrica) and tell you that this drug is "safe", is simply MEDICAL ABUSE. Because there is a lot of proof of how unsafe it is. Thankfully since I no longer suffer with dementia my reading comprehension has returned. Too many physicians refuse take this seriously or read the evidence of how dangerous this class of drugs is. Gabapentin suppresses the Central Nervous System and causes dangerous symptoms often attributed to other causes. Basically I suffered with chemically induced Alzhemers for years because of Neurontin & Gabapentin. (There is now a newer version of Gabapentin & Neurontin which is also being pushed by the pharmaceutical industry and the medical community for chronic pain & Fibromyalgia. It is called Lyrica. Lyrica is even stronger). Gabapentin & Neurontin have NEVER been FDA approved for the treatment of pain. The original clinical studies done on Neurontin (the precursor to Gabapentin) were falsified by Pfizer. Since Pfizer had to pay the US Government a one billion dollar criminal fine for falsifying the clinical trials of Gabapentin, then why is this drug STILL being prescribed? Why is this drug even STILL on the market ? The FDA knows the data was falsified but just pay the one billion dollar fine and move along, Pfizer? No ACCURATE & PROVEN clinical trials are now REQUIRED for drugs that are prescribed if you pay the fine? For what is currently one of the most prescribed drugs in America? A drug that is also given to children? I have researched this drug extensively I went off of it. And if I can help only even one patient who is suffering as I did for the 16 years I was on this debilitating chemical cocktail Gabapentin to recognize the horrific symptoms they are experiencing, then I hope to find that person. HOWEVER, IF YOU ARE TAKING ANY OF THESE DRUGS FOR A SEIZURE CONDITION, DO NOT GO OFF OF IT WITHOUT CONSULTING YOUR PHYSICIAN. ONLY ATTEMPT TO TITER YOURSELF OFF OF NEURONTIN, GABAPENTIN OR LYRICA IF YOU HAVE BEEN PRESCRIBED THESE DRUGS FOR THE "OFF LABEL USES". IT IS ESTIMATED THAT UP TO 94% OF THE NEURONTIN & GABAPENTIN PRESCRIPTIONS WRITTEN ARE FOR "OFF LABEL" USE. If you are not taking Gabapentin or Neurontin for a seizure condition, you are taking it for an "off label" condition. Of which the efficacy has never been proven in clinical trials. http://www.rxwiki.com/neurontin https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXxn_pCvHVm5rtYCS2sLMNQ2j1LWbE0_L Neurontin, the brand name form of gabapentin, is a prescription medication used to treat adults with nerve pain caused by shingles. Shingles is a painful rash that is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the virus that also causes chickenpox. Neurontin is also used in combination with other medications to treat partial seizures. Neurontin belongs to a group of drugs called anticonvulsants, which help treat seizures by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. It also works by altering the way the body senses pain. This medication comes in tablet, capsule, and oral (by mouth) solution forms and is taken up to 3 times a day, with or without food. The capsules are taken with a full glass of water. Common side effects of Neurontin include dizziness, lack of coordination, and drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Neurontin affects you.

People want to know if Gabapentin or Neurontin can cause uncontrollable movements. - An older neurologist, described me; "Ballism, Chorea, and dystonic posture to the right hand. She has never taken neuroleptics. Jerking movements of the head, neck and arms, not so much to the legs. A casual relationship to Gabapentin has not been identified." He said in a referral to a university movement disorder clinic, "This is a very odd movement disorder, and stranger still is its possible relationship to Gabapentin. I have never heard of this possibility." The specialist said, "While Gabapentin is associated with dystonic reactions, these have been reported in the setting of chronic use and resolve when the medication is discontinued." Warning: Don't suddenly stop taking this medication. Always consult your physician.

No evidence that proves Gabapentin helps people with bipolar disorder. If there is a clinical trial that was ever done that proves the efficacy of using Gabapentin to treat bipolar disorder I have never been able to locate it. There IS evidence however that Neurontin (which gabapentin is the generic form ) induces suicidal ideation and increases the risk of suivide. Is this a drug that should be given to bipolar patients? A drug that artificially induces depression by tamping down the synapses so that the neurons are no longer receiving electrical signals from the synapses? When the central nervous system is suppressed any function of the CNS has the possibility of becoming affected. Which is why so many bizarre side effects are occurring from these drugs. Which physicians in turn are telling their patients cannot possibly be related or a side effect of gabapentin or Neurontin or Lyrica. But they ARE related. Although more than likely it will be ascribed to another NEW & SEPARATE disorder. When in reality-because your central nervous system ceases to work properly on this drug. I almost died from respiratory failure on gabapentin. Because the respiratory system is controlled my the central nervous system. As far as Gabapentin & Lyrica being used to treat pain, the protocols for treating pain with Lyrica and Gabapentin were developed by a physician who later went to prison for his completely falsified "research". Yet those protocols have never been rescinded and are still being used today. I have included the links to this info. Take these drugs at your own risk. And be warned that WHEN you begin to experience side affects (and you will at some point) your physician will most likely dismiss the link to Gabapentin & Lyrica AND they will not tell you of Gabapentin withdrawals. Over a year after being off of Gabapentin I still suffer from dystonia, Hypertonia, as well as several other neuro movement disorders that may be permanent. I was also advised by my pharmacy to just stop taking it. Which could have killed me. In addition to making my movement disorders induced by these drugs as possibly being permanent. You are not getting the full story on these drugs. Hopefully someday this drug will be exposed for the reality of it being the big pharmaceutical hoax that it is. Snake oil. But until then, be proactive. Do your research. And if you decide to stop taking it -a slow taper off is necessary or you can easily be left with a wide variety of side effects or movement disorders that will cause you to suffer years later. Lyrica, Gabapentin, and Topamax side effects of weight gain and brain fog from these anti-convulsants. I was prescribed these medications for diabetic neuropathy and for severe pain caused from Guillain-Barre (GBS) and conversion disorder. These drugs do help with pain management but I wish the doctors would have told me about the side effects. Also, many doctors didn't believe me when I mentioned that Lyrica can cause weight gain. I gained 21 pounds the first month that I was on Lyrica. It was like I was given a large dose of steroids. I have researched this weight gain issue with many folks taking these meds. I am turning to holistic medications like CBD oil to manage pain. Contact @ChronicPainAustin on Facebook

How Does Gabapentin Work? What Does Gabapentin Do And Gabapentin Reviews Subscribe To Get New Videos Daily: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi1zZ8_Q7yqKInXImLCLfXw --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Knowing drugs like Gabapentin work in the body is important in evaluating the usefulness of new anticonvulsants. It helps doctors and drug manufacturers understand how it can affect different parts of the body. With this, they can adjust the chemistry of the drug to improve its performance or remove unwanted side effects. Gabapentin is the generic version of Neurontin. It is a drug used to prevent and control seizures. The drug can be taken on its own or as an adjuvant to other anti-seizure medications. Aside from that, adults can also consume it to alleviate neuropathic pain. Two of its known unverified uses include treatment for migraines and insomnia. However, although not a controlled substance, Gabapentin has also been the subject of substance abuse. Known on the streets as the “gabbies,” some have been taking advantage of this drug’s side effects to feel euphoria. WHAT IS EPILEPSY AND NEUROPATHIC PAIN? To fully understand how Gabapentin works, you must first know and understand the diseases it aims to prevent: epilepsy and neuropathic pains. Epilepsy is a disorder affecting the nervous system. It causes the sufferer to become unconscious suddenly and to have violent and uncontrolled movements in the body. If we think of it regarding electricity, epilepsy is like your body short circuiting. Now, let’s discuss neuropathic pains. This type of pain happens when the nervous system or nerves undergo an abnormally quick rate of degeneration. Doctors usually link it to other diseases such as herpes, shingles, or even diabetes. As you can observe, both the diseases Gabapentin treats are problems mainly on the nervous system, giving you an idea of how this drug works. HOW IS GABAPENTIN PROCESSED BY YOUR BODY? The body handles Gabapentin in the same way it processes other drugs. Once you take the recommended dosage of Gabapentin, it goes to the stomach where it breaks down into smaller particles. The components of gabapentin work by being absorbed in your intestines. The blood vessels carry the absorbed Gabapentin along with the other nutrients to the liver. Now, the drug goes through a “screening process.” As it is a foreign object, the liver will do its job and block a certain amount of it. Once transported into the brain, Gabapentin will stabilize the electrical impulses that fire within the central nervous system. Now, the way neurotransmitters send messages to the brain is now affected. Gabapentin does that by altering the amount of GABA, a “nerve-calming” agent produced by the body. At the same time, it inhibits the production of glutamate, a “nerve-exciting” agent. Experts blame this neurotransmitter as the reason why epileptic seizures happen. WHAT ARE ITS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS? Although quite effective in preventing epileptic seizures, it comes with some side effects that may range from very mild to severe. Some of them happen naturally as a result of how the drug works. Drowsiness: Knowing already what GABA and its function in your body, it makes sense to feel drowsiness as an effect. It is the reason why some have also used it to cure insomnia. What GABA does is calm the brain, thus causing drowsiness. Suicidal thoughts: Gabapentin is a depressant. Especially if the one who takes it already has a history of mood swings or even depression, he is prone to have suicidal thoughts when under the influence of this drug. Humans have been using Gabapentin for decades now. However, we still need more studies to verify its pharmacokinetic actions thoroughly. There are still some uncertainties on how this drug works. Nevertheless, although not entirely understood, most doctors still prescribe it due to its effectiveness. Gabapentin is drug introduced in earlier days for treating epilepsy. But nowadays usually the usage of gabapentin is less common compared to other newer drugs. This is one of the safe drugs, usually safe to take. You use this drug whether is a problem with the liver or kidney or some other problem because this will not cause any side effects involved with the kidney and the liver and also they cause when they are taking any other medication because the drugs interaction is also less like if we are taking cancer medication, or diabetes sugar medication or hypertensive medication or if somebody is suffering from HIV or cancer also. So interaction with other medication is also less and also causing damage to other organs also for them. So this is one of the safest medicines available. As such there is no specific contraindication for gabapentin. As I told, it is one of the safest drug, but only if they are hypersensitive to this compound, then only it is contraindicated. Otherwise this is one of the safest drugs available for treating epilepsy.

Scripps Research Institute Professor Barbara Mason, Ph.D., speaks on her findings about a new use for an existing drug. The generic drug gabapentin, which is already widely prescribed for epilepsy and some kinds of pain, appears to be safe and effective in the treatment of alcohol dependence. The finding comes from a 150-patient randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind clinical trial conducted by scientists at The Scripps Research Institute.
