How to Create A Topographic Map with Sketchup

05:58
Creating a topographic map can be a huge pain in the neck. If you've ever tried to get GIS data or find a city topographic map you know exactly what I mean. In this video I teach how to create a topographic map in sketchup quickly and easily. First you'll need to import your google map into your project. See the link at the bottom of this description if you don't know how to do that. Make sure that you're terrain is toggled on. Next create a grouped rectangle that covers the entire site. Copy that rectangle up at your designer increment. Pro Tip: Use and asterisk '*' and a number to multiply copies at the increment you decided. Unlock and explode your terrain. Intersect your grouped slicing planes with your exploded terrain. Hide or delete your slicing planes Now you have a topographic map! If you want to get rid of the faces, right click on one and 'select all with same material'. Hit delete and you're golden! If you'd like to have a flat map, create an additional surface underneath your lines & use sketchup's sandbox tool to drape the lines over that surface. How to Turn 2D Topography or a Survey into 3d Terrain in Sketchup

12:26
In this video we walk you through how to turn 2D topography or a survey into 3D terrain in sketchup. STEPS: If you don't have sketchup PRO or a CAD file you can import follow the steps with * below. If you want to import a 2D CAD drawing skip to the steps without *0 * 0:22 Import your 2D image (your topography or survey) into your sketchup file * 1:03 Scale your 2D image as accurately as you can using the tape measure tool. Make sure there's nothing else in your model or that you're using the tape measure inside another group. * 2:09 Trace the 2D linework in your image. Start with your perimeter property line, and then traces the topographic contour lines within the property boundary. 3:09 Understand what the topography is doing and how it's sloping. * 4:03 Delete any faces created while drawing your 2D topography 4:43 Separate your property line our boundary as a separate group 5:15 Move your 2D topographic contours along the blue or z-axis to their appropriate locations. This is where understanding the slope comes in handy. 5:56 Highlight all of your contours and select "Draw", "Sandbox", "From Contours" 6:16 Draw additional contours to extend the 3D terrain beyond the property line 8:33 Create a reverse void group of the property and "intersect with selection" on the 3D terrain What kind of projects are you working on that require you to convert 2d topography or a survey into 3d terrain in Sketchup? Topographic Maps

Topographic map - Plate Tectonics A topographic map with contour lines Part of the same map in a perspective shaded relief view illustrating how the contour lines follow the terrain Section of topographical map of Nablus area (West Bank) with contour lines at 100-meter intervals. Heights are colour-coded In modern mapping, a topographic map is a type of map characterized by large-scale detail and quantitative representation of relief, usually using contour lines, but historically using a variety of methods. Traditional definitions require a topographic map to show both natural and man-made features. A topographic map is typically published as a map series, made up of two or more map sheets that combine to form the whole map. A contour line is a line connecting places of equal elevation. Natural Resources Canada provides this description of topographic maps:[1] These maps depict in detail ground relief (landforms and terrain), drainage (lakes and rivers), forest cover, administrative areas, populated areas, transportation routes and facilities (including roads and railways), and other man-made features. Other authors define topographic maps by contrasting them with another type of map; they are distinguished from smaller-scale "chorographic maps" that cover large regions,[2][3] "planimetric maps" that do not show elevations,[4] and "thematic maps" that focus on specific topics.[5] However, in the vernacular and day to day world, the representation of relief (contours) is popularly held to define the genre, such that even small-scale maps showing relief are commonly (and erroneously, in the technical sense) called "topographic".[3] The study or discipline of topography is a much broader field of study, which takes into account all natural and man-made features of terrain. History[edit] See also: Topography § Etymology, Cadastre § History, and Cartography § History Topographic maps are based on topographical surveys. Performed at large scales, these surveys are called topographical in the old sense of topography, showing a variety of elevations and landforms.[6] This is in contrast to older cadastral surveys, which primarily show property and governmental boundaries. The first multi-sheet topographic map series of an entire country, the Carte géométrique de la France, was completed in 1789.[7] The Great Trigonometric Survey of India, started by the East India Company in 1802, then taken over by the British Raj after 1857 was notable as a successful effort on a larger scale and for accurately determining heights of Himalayan peaks from viewpoints over one hundred miles distant.[8] Global indexing system first developed for International Map of the World Topographic surveys were prepared by the military to assist in planning for battle and for defensive emplacements (thus the name and history of the United Kingdom's Ordnance Survey). As such, elevation information was of vital importance.[9] As they evolved, topographic map series became a national resource in modern nations in planning infrastructure and resource exploitation. In the United States, the national map-making function which had been shared by both the Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of the Interior migrated to the newly created United States Geological Survey in 1879, where it has remained since.[10][11] 1913 saw the beginning of the International Map of the World initiative, which set out to map all of Earth's significant land areas at a scale of 1:1 million, on about one thousand sheets, each covering four degrees latitude by six or more degrees longitude. Excluding borders, each sheet was 44 cm high and (depending on latitude) up to 66 cm wide. Although the project eventually foundered, it left an indexing system that remains in use. By the 1980s, centralized printing of standardized topographic maps began to be superseded by databases of coordinates that could be used on computers by moderately skilled end users to view or print maps with arbitrary contents, coverage and scale. For example, the Federal government of the United States' TIGER initiative compiled interlinked databases of federal, state and local political borders and census enumeration areas, and of roadways, railroads, and water features with support for locating street addresses within street segments. TIGER was developed in the 1980s and used in the 1990 and subsequent decennial censuses. Digital elevation models (DEM) were also compiled, initially from topographic maps and stereographic interpretation of aerial photographs and then from satellite photography and radar data. Since all these were government projects funded with taxes and not classified for national security reasons, the datasets were in the public domain and freely usable without fees or licensing.

Staying Found - wilderness trip planning tutorial

18:53
Learn how to use free web tools (Peakbagger, Caltopo, Google Earth and Gaia GPS) to do pre-trip navigation planning for wilderness travel. Our example is for mountaineering, but the basic techniques work for mt. biking, hiking, XC skiing, or just about any other kind of backcountry trip. Here's what we'll cover: 1. Find a GPX track file on peakbagger.com 2. Import the GPX file into Caltopo, and make an elevation profile of your route 3. Print a map from Caltopo with your route drawn 4. Export the GPX file to Gaia GPS on your smartphone 5. Export a KML file, and open in Google earth, and get a few good screen grabs 6. Make a PDF “route beta sheet” with trip reports, Google Earth screen grabs and elevation profile Let’s start with a basic premise. A map is good to have but a map with your route drawn on it is even better. The way that we draw our route onto a map is with a GPX file, and that's what we need to start with. You can think of a GPX file as a sort of universal file format for sharing geographic data, which could be a point, or a line, or both. An example of a point might be a campsite or a trailhead. A line is the actual route that you need to take. So, where do we get a good GPX file? For mountaineering, a good place to start is peakbagger.com. This site has an extensive collection of trip reports and GPX files for many mountaineering routes around the world. Go to peakbagger and search for the peak you want. Hopefully, in the lower left corner, you'll see some trip reports and also note indicating if they have a GPS track with them. Open the trip report(s) with a GPS track(s )in a new browser window, and see if the track coverss the route that you want to try. If they do, download the track to your hard drive using the “download GPS track” link under the map preview window. Now, go to Cal topo, and import the GPS track. Change your map base layer to mapbuilder topo. From here you can print a map, on one or multiple pages, as a PDF file, with your route drawn in. In Caltopo, mouse over export, and export GPX file as a KML file. Open the KML file and Google earth, and take a couple of screen grabs. Copy and paste of the screen grabs in a word processing document to print out and take with you. Also in this document, you can copy paste and elevation profile from Cal topo, along with any trip reports that you might find on the web. Also, you can load guy a GPS on to your smart phone, and email the GPX track to yourself so you can use it when you're navigating in the field. When you're done, you should have everything you need for a successful navigation - a nice printed map, a GPX file loaded to get a GPS on your smart phone, and a couple of pages printed out with route information, elevation profile and some screen grabs from Google earth.

Elevation

05:21
http://gallery.usgs.gov/videos/567 The National Elevation Dataset (NED) is the primary elevation data product produced and distributed by the USGS National 3D Elevation Program (3DEP). The NED provides seamless raster elevation data of the conterminous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and the island territories. The NED is derived from diverse source data sets that are processed to a specification with a consistent resolution, coordinate system, elevation units, and horizontal and vertical datums. The NED is the logical result of the maturation of the long-standing USGS elevation program, which for many years concentrated on production of topographic map quadrangle-based digital elevation models. The NED serves as the elevation layer of The National Map, and provides basic elevation information for earth science studies and mapping applications in the United States. The NED is a multi-resolution dataset that is updated bimonthly to integrate newly available, improved elevation source data. NED data are available nationally at grid spacings of 1 arc-second (approximately 30 meters) for the conterminous United States, and at 1/3 and 1/9 arc-seconds (approximately 10 and 3 meters, respectively) for parts of the United States. Quality Level 3 and higher lidar point cloud are also available in the public domain for download when they are the source of new NED DEMs. Most of the NED for Alaska is available at 2-arc-second (about 60 meters) grid spacing, where only lower resolution source data exist. Part of Alaska is available at the 1/3-arc-second resolution, and plans are in development for a significant upgrade in elevation data coverage of the State over the next 5 years. Specifications for the NED include the following: - Coordinate system: Geographic (decimal degrees of latitude and longitude), - Horizontal datum: North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83), - Vertical datum: North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88) over the conterminous United States and varies in other areas, and - Elevation units: Decimal meters.

05:24
PLEASE NOTE: IN SKETCHUP 2017, SKETCHUP LOST THE FUNCTIONALITY TO IMPORT MAPS AND TERRAIN FROM GOOGLE MAPS. TERRAIN AND SATELLITE IMAGERY IS NOW ONLY AVAILABLE IN THE PRO VERSION OF SKETCHUP. MAP DATA CAN STILL BE IMPORTED IN THE FREE SKETCHUP MAKE VERSION. PLEASE LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE More SketchUp tutorials and resources at http://www.thesketchupessentials.com Check Us Out On - Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/easysketchup Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/thesketchupessentials Pinterest - http://www.pinterest.com/easysketchup/ One of the most powerful things about SketchUp is the way that it integrates with both Google Maps and Google Earth. Originally, SketchUp was purchased by Google, who then built in a lot of useful tools for geolocating models created in the software. Since then, SketchUp has been purchased by Trimble, but those geolocation tools remain active in SketchUp. This SketchUp tutorial will teach you how to import Google Maps into your SketchUp models. You can use these maps to ensure that your models are accurately located in the real world (you can even export your models into Google Earth). This is a very simple, powerful process.

Topographic Maps
