Half marathon training for beginners sounds a little like an oxymoron, doesn't it? Fear not! We're here to break it down for you, take away the doubt, and turn those vague hopes into a full-proof plan with 3 ESSENTIAL tips. Before we do… be sure to DOWNLOAD your FREE Half Marathon Training Guide. Click below! http://https://therunexperience.com/free-training/half Tip #1: Half Marathon training for beginners should include a "Pre-Training" Plan Don't rush the process! If this is your first time taking a shot at a Half Marathon training plan, pick a race that's 4 to 6 months down the road. If you're going to commit to this, you want to do it CORRECTLY. This means taking 1 month before your official 12-16 week training plan begins to work out the kinks in your fitness baseline, running technique, and of course your general role as an athlete. Consider this your "Pre-Training" training plan: * Commit to running 4 days/week, keeping the mileage to 3-5 miles per day * Take multiple pairs of running shoes for a spin, before choosing a couple of pairs to rotate through * Use the small aches and pains that come up along the way to serve you as indicators of weakness, poor habits in your form, and areas to focus your strength work on Efficiency in your running comes from better understanding the finer details and how they work together. Tip #2: Half Marathon training plans should be adjusted to fit you, the runner! Don't follow a plan. Let a plan follow you. There are thousands of "cookie cutter" Half Marathon training plans out there for you to use. Some great coaches, athletes and runners have taken the time to map out a finite, week-by-week, mile-by-mile plan for you to use to reach that finish line. You and 1,000,000 of your fellow runners, that is. These plans were maybe tailored to one specific person at the point of their creation, but have since been copy & pasted onto people of all shapes & sizes, procuring every injury and running habit you could possibly think of. Success in Half Marathon Training for beginners comes from knowing how to listen to your body. Maybe the plan says to run hills on Wednesday. The problem with that PDF file or page in the book is that it can't hear you. It can't hear that your quads are crazy tight that day, or that your knees feel super stiff and achy after your tempo run from the day before. DON'T BE AFRAID TO CHANGE THE PLAN. Listen to your body and rearrange things accordingly. By all means get the work in, but NOT at the expense of an early injury or really crappy running form. Tip #3: Your Half Marathon training plan is only as good as the strength training you are using to support it Strength train twice a week! Don't be fooled into thinking that getting better at running can only come from running more. Running more can't happen if your body can't support you for it. Strength training just twice a week, for 20-30 minutes per day is all you need to gain access to a full range of motion and stable control in all of the joints being impacted by those miles- i.e. hips, ankles, knees, you name it. Oh, and remember those little problem areas you discovered during your "Pre-Training" month? Here's your chance to fix, fix, fix! Good stuff to incorporate into your strength days: * Push-ups. A simple and effective way to find your midline, access your glutes, stabilize the shoulders...the list goes on. * Squats * Lunges * Burpees * And for some creative combinations of the list above, check out the Strength Training Playlist on our YouTube Channel :) The best part...you don't need even need a gym for most of this stuff! 3 Times When to Walk during an Ultra Marathon Trail Race. It's time to walk when you come to a hill that's over head high, and on the flats when you visit an aid station. You may feel tired on the flats and start losing your form. On the downhills, if they are too steep or technical, it's best to walk. If you have already fried your quads, you may have no choice than to walk. Your training is only as valuable as the recovery you're taking throughout it. One HUGE component of half marathon training is learning to balance exertion with rest. Looking for some more guidance on how to start training for the half marathon? Download your FREE GUIDE below! http://https://therunexperience.com/free-training/half Half Marathon Training Doesn't Have To Wreck Your Body If you're reading this, my guess is that you've either already signed up for a half marathon (perhaps your FIRST EVER) or are considering doing so. There's no doubt about it...training for a half marathon is a different experience than NOT training for a half marathon. You're going to need energy, strength, will power and a good understanding of your body's limits. And there's no reason you can't have it all! You're going to be working hard and putting in a good number of miles over the course of a few months. If you haven't yet found a plan for this, might we suggest taking a look at our Half Marathon Program? Instead of allowing your body to be beat down by this increased volume of training, read on for our FAVORITE half marathon training recovery tricks! Trick #1 Do NOT be afraid to walk! Half marathon training includes lots of lengthy runs, many of which should be run at slow to moderate speeds, teaching your body how to aerobically adapt to moving for a long period of time. Believe it or not, you are the one who dictates how fatigued and sore you are after a run. Sure, other factors exist: * You didn't get much sleep * You're dehydrated * You ate something that didn't sit well * You're working through an injury But the reality here is that YOU are in the driver's seat. Your speed and run mechanics (form) are ENTIRELY up to you every single time you step out of the door. So...take control! Try taking a 15-30 second WALK BREAK every 3 minutes, during your run. Walking helps to: * Monitor your speed, in case you were running unsustainably fast * Reset your arm swing * Reset the pulling mechanics of your stride * Straighten out your toes to face directly front * Remind you to stay tall * Remind you to find a tight core Often times, coming out of the gate too fast causes us to start hunching over and shuffling, creating more opportunity for poor movement patterns and increased soreness. Increased soreness means less motivation to train the next day. And the downwards spiral continues... Trick #2 Put your legs up! One GREAT way to "press the reset button" on your nervous system and oxygen level in your legs is to get upside down. Like we mentioned before, your half marathon training will add up quick. In the beginning, you'll notice that your body is having trouble keeping up with all of the new work you're putting in. So why not find a way to be ACTIVE in getting the body back to neutral QUICKLY? Try this: After your run OR at the end of the day, put your legs up on the wall for 10 minutes. That's it. Relax. Instagram your workout, read a book, write in your training journal, call your mom. Gravity and the support of the wall will drive the blood and oxygen back into your legs and hips, making for less inflammation and more energy for your next workout. Use these tricks to minimize your recovery time so that you can get the MOST out of your half marathon training and stay INJURY FREE. Today, I'm finishing up week 2 of the Jim Galloway Run-Walk-Run program that should get me from zero to hero in the half-marathon in another 17 weeks. I hate running, I'm old, out of shape, have chronic problems from old injuries, and I'm doing it, so what's your excuse? Note: The title and description have been updated because I made it to a half marathon distance in 19 weeks instead of my original goal of 25 weeks! This is because after a few weeks on Jeff's program, I set my sights a bit higher - to go the full marathon distance - which changed up my training.

Step 1: Pick a cause Pick a cause that's particularly important to you. Learn about your issue through personal interaction and statistics so you can speak about it passionately and accurately. Step 2: Form a planning committee Find other people to help you plan your event by visiting local support groups and web forums. Gather enough people so you can delegate effectively while maintaining focus on your objective. Seek out a national group dedicated to your cause to help with additional information and contacts. Step 3: Decide when Pick a date to hold your event, giving yourself at least six months to plan. Research other events going on in your area so you're not competing for people's availability, energy, and funding. Select an alternate date, so people aren't forced to run or walk in bad weather. Tip If your charity has a designated day or month, plan your event around it to help generate publicity. Step 4: Pick a route Choose an available location and route for your event. Pick a race length that ensures people can finish and accomplish their goals while raising appropriate funds. Consult local officials regarding traffic flow, crowd control, security issues, and insurance needs. Step 5: Find sponsors Approach businesses and individuals to donate resources or funds. Start with local running or sporting goods stores, since their business relates directly to your event. Take whatever a sponsor is willing to provide and thank them in any event-related press. Tip If a sponsor donates an item you can't use for the event, raffle it off before the race starts. Step 6: Meet the press Publicize your event. Contact newspaper, radio, and television outlets for interviews. Find out if any public personalities have connections to your cause and would be willing to either get the word out or participate themselves. Step 7: Sign up participants Find people to participate. Decide at least four months in advance whether to have participants pay a registration fee, collect sponsors, or both. Approach friends, relatives, and support groups; reach out to contacts on social-media services; and place fliers locally. Create a website where people can find information on the race and your cause. Step 8: Expect the unexpected Have a plan for race day, but be willing to improvise if necessary. Maintain a cool head and rely on your team's support as you watch your charitable vision become a reality. Did You Know? Jeff has worked with over 200,000 average people in training for specific goals. His innovative ideas have opened up the possibility of running and completing a marathon to almost everyone. Jeff believes we were all designed to run and walk and he keeps finding ways to bring more people into the positive world of exercise. This talk will focus on how to build a love of running and how to run injury free. A lifetime runner, Galloway was an All-American collegiate athlete and a member of the 1972 US Olympic Team in the 10,000 meters. He remains a competitive athlete, continuing through a successful masters running career. He is the CEO of Galloway Productions, which conducts a broad range of training programs and events yearly; he also owns two specialty running stores. He has written several books on training and writes a monthly column for Runner's World Magazine.

I start week 21 of the marathon program with a message to those who think that a marathon run isn't really a run if you take walk breaks. While the running community is hugely supportive of even beginners, there is a vocal segment who attempt to belittle the efforts of those who, albeit with walk breaks, get out there and run a marathon. Bear with me as I start out the week with a great run, and just a bit of venting.

The warm up consists of the following: 3-5 rounds: 10 straight leg raises each leg 10 dynamic lunge stretches each leg 10 leg swings 10 shoulder extension swings 10 m straight leg shuffle 10 m skipping 10 m light jog Running by itself isn't a warm up. Running is the training and/or the exercise. There are certain parts of the body that need certain things to warm up well for running. The hips need to be warmed up into extension, the posterior chain needs to be prepared to be stretched and then contracted, the shoulders need to be warmed up for proper arm swing, the lower legs (calves) need to be warmed up, and if you're going to be doing sprinting especially, the muscles around your spine need to be ready. “I’ve got my life back”. Robert was diagnosed with polycystic kidneys and told to just accept it, nothing could be done. He was told his energy and health would get worse and worse until he needed a transplant. And after the transplant things would get worse still with a lifetime of steroids, anti-rejection medication (to stop his body from attacking the new kidney) and a hugely increased risk of other degenerative diseases. Slowly, his life started slipping away. His energy plummeted year on year until he couldn’t walk 40m along his driveway. With three kids (including autistic twins), he was devestated at the impact his worsening chronic fatigue was having on their life. But one day Robert made a decision. Despite the challenges, setbacks, roadblocks in his way he declared that he could not go on like this and that something had to change. He found the alkaline way of living, and he’s never looked back. Robert’s story is incredible. It shows us the power of making simple changes to your diet, and setting goals that are bigger than yourself. The life Robert now leads is a complete contrast to where it was headed and his family, his children are reaping the rewards of a Dad who is healthy, vibrant and thriving.
