11 Signs Your Body Needs More Magnesium

03:49
Magnesium is a mineral found in many types of foods, it plays an essential role in human DNA production, repair and in maintaining healthy bones, nerves and muscles. Though it is readily available, most Americans do not meet their need for magnesium through their diet. you should consider getting your magnesium level checked if you suffer the following 11 symptoms. 1. Low energy. Magnesium is involved in at least 300 different chemical reactions in our body, and a lot have to do with energy production. A sign of low magnesium can be low energy. 2.Insomnia. If you're having a hard time falling or staying asleep, it may be due to low levels of magnesium, particularly if you are experiencing a lot of stress. Stress hormones increase blood pressure and heart rate, this is partly accomplished by depleting the body of its magnesium If there isn't enough magnesium available for the body to replenish itself, sleeping becomes a problem. 3.Constipation. Bowel movements often slow down without enough magnesium in the body. note that magnesium is the main ingredient in many over-the-counter laxatives. 4.Frequent headaches. Magnesium deficiency lowers serotonin levels, causes blood vessels to constrict and affects neurotransmitter function, all related to headaches -- especially migraines. 50% of migraine sufferers have a magnesium deficiency. 5.Twitching or cramping. Because magnesium plays an important role in muscle relaxation, insufficient intake can result in unintended muscle movement. Without magnesium, our muscles would be in a constant state of contraction 6.Low bone density. Magnesium plays a major role in bone formation, and the majority of the body's magnesium is stored in the bones. People with higher intakes of magnesium have a higher bone mineral density. 7.High blood pressure. Magnesium is very important in maintaining a healthy blood pressure, a deficiency can definitely cause pressure to be too high. Eating foods high in magnesium and other minerals can help prevent high blood pressure in people with prehypertension. 8.Type 2 diabetes. Breaking down blood sugars is another of magnesium's jobs in the human body. People with higher amounts of magnesium in their diets tend to have a lower risk of developing diabetes. Research is ongoing to determine whether magnesium therapy can be used in diabetes treatment. 9.Irregular heartbeat. With low magnesium levels, the heart can have trouble staying in its regular rhythm. doctors will often prescribe magnesium supplements for patients who complain of an irregular heartbeat. 10.Increased sensitivity to noise. Not having enough magnesium curtails its role in stabilizing the nervous system, This often results in hyperflexia, an enhanced startle reflex. And 11. Depression and anxiety. Low levels of magnesium in the brain can affect neurological functions that result in all sorts of problems. Studies have shown that some phobias -- such as agoraphobia -- have developed as a result of low magnesium levels.  Please Subscribe! ▶ https://goo.gl/ksfh7M NOTE: The materials and the information contained on Natural ways channel are provided for general and educational purposes only and do not constitute any legal, medical or other professional advice on any subject matter. Sources of Essential Micronutrients: Vitamins and Minerals

04:46
Essential micronutrients as the name suggests are nutrients our body needs only in small amounts. These are the vitamins and mineral. In todays we will talk about sources of vitamins and minerals and the function of micronutrients. Vitamins and minerals are essential micronutrients that play a variety of roles in our body, from building to repairing tissue, to aiding digestion, and maintaining nervous system functions. There is daily recommendation of all the micronutrients that we should consume to function normally. Deficiency of vitamins and minerals results in diseases. An example is scurvy due to Vitamin C deficiency in sailors who went on long voyages during 16 and 17th century. Keep in mind though there is also an upper limit for the amount of vitamins and minerals one must consume on a daily basis. When we consume too much of a particular vitamin or mineral, it can stay within the body, making blood levels more toxic. There can be unpleasant and even damaging side effects to having too much of micronutrient also. Sources of Vitamin and Mineral Functions Vitamins are either water-soluble or fat-soluble. The fat-soluble vitamins are A, D, E, K. These all require fat for digestion. Vitamin A plays a major role in vision, reproductive health and the immune system. Vitamin A and D play a key role in bone health. The best sources of vitamin A are egg yolks, milk and liver. The best source for vitamin D is sunlight. Vitamin E, has antioxidant properties and helps prevent cell damage. Vegetable oils, nuts and seeds are a great source of Vitamin E Vitamin K is found in leafy greens such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts and spinach. It plays a role in healing and blood clotting and bone growth. The water-soluble vitamins include all the B vitamins, vitamin C, folic acid and niacin: Niacin, Riboflavin (also known as B2) and Thiamin (also known as B1) help metabolize carbohydrates and amino acids. The great source of vitamins B1 and B2 are grains, cereals, meats, and legumes. Vitamin B6 plays a role similar to those of Niacin, Riboflavin and Thiamin, and also plays a role in neurotransmitter synthesis and the synthesis of blood cells. The great sources of vitamin B6 are poultry, cereals, chickpeas various root vegetables. Folic acid plays a major role in neurotransmitter and DNA synthesis, amino acid metabolization and red blood cell function. You’ll find it in fruits, legumes, liver, and wheat germ. Vitamin B12 plays a major role in the nervous system and in message transduction by maintaining the myelin sheath that encases nerves. Because of its important role, B12 deficiencies are serious. Unfortunately you’ll find B12 only in animal based food products such as poultry, beef and dairy. For vegans therefore we strongly recommend them to consume cereals fortified with B12. The work of Vitamin C is very broad. It plays a crucial role in healing and collagen production, it is an antioxidant, and synthesizes DNA and neurotransmitters. Vitamin C does not prevent the general public from contracting the common cold, though that seems to be a common myth. Too much vitamin C can be a bad thing, acting as an oxidant and even leading to nose bleeds and gastrointestinal distress. Best source of vitamin C are citrus fruits and vegetables. Essential minerals that our body needs include: - Magnesium - Potassium - Manganese - Calcium - Sulfur - Iron - Chromium - Fluoride - Iodide - Selenium - Zinc - Molybdenum - Copper - Chromium The main functions of minerals are: • Bone and organ tissue maintenance • Muscle contraction • Digestion • Healing • Cellular functions • Transportation and much more. With all the information we have you might now be confused on what you should be eating and how much. So to simplify things just keep in mind that micronutrients are available in whole, unprocessed foods. If you are able to consume a diet high in a variety of fruits, vegetables, legumes and meats and fish, you probably are not deficient in any of them. If on the other hand you find that you are eating a few of the same foods over and over, you may want to supplement your diet with a few key-missing micronutrients. Not many people are aware, but the human body functions the best at a pH level that is slightly on the alkaline side. pH levels can range from 0, or completely acidic, to 14, completely alkaline. Ideally, the body’s pH levels should sit around 7.35 to 7.45 in order to function properly. Unfortunately, the majority of people consume a highly processed diet that is high in sugar. This causes the body’s pH to become acidic. Therefore, most of the people walking around today have pH levels that are not stabilized and are acidic. Luckily, the pH in the human body can be restored. Today’s video will discuss ten powerful foods that are consumed on the alkaline diet and can improve one’s health. 1. Spinach Spinach is a powerful vegetable that has many health characteristics, including its alkaline effects. This is largely due to it’s high content of chlorophyll, which causes the spinach to be an alkalizing agent to the body and restore the pH level back to its ideal. 2. Lemons This may be surprising, as lemons are often seen as an acidic fruit. However, they are actually high in alkaline properties. This is because once the citric acid in lemons are metabolized, they provide an alkaline effect on the body. They help to cleanse and detox the body, using essential minerals like calcium and iron. 3. Kale Kale is another powerful green that should be added to a daily diet. It has the ability to stabilize the body’s pH levels, while providing detoxification and antioxidant properties. Kale contains Vitamin A, Vitamin K, Vitamin C, Magnesium, Calcium, Copper, Potassium, Iron, Protein, Phosphorus and Manganese. 4. Avocados Avocados are another one of those foods that are packed with essential vitamins and minerals that help to flush out harmful toxins from the body and help to restore the body’s pH level to its optimum level. By doing so, avocados help the cardiovascular system, the immune system, the circulatory system and the digestive system. 5. Wheatgrass Wheatgrass also helps to detoxify the body. In doing so, it also helps to protect the liver from harmful toxins. Since it contains essential vitamins and minerals, along with ridding the body of toxins that weigh it down, wheatgrass helps to boost energy, lose weight, stabilize blood sugar and fight cancerous cells. 6. Celery Celery is a healthful food that is not given the credit it is deserved. Celery is normally found on every diet’s menu. This is largely because celery is a diuretic, as it helps the body to get rid of any excess fluids. Celery can also neutralize the acid in the body and bring the pH level back to a slightly alkaline level. 7. Broccoli Broccoli is one of the most important foods to eat in order to maintain an alkalized pH levels. That is because broccoli contains phytochemicals that alkalize the body, reduce estrogen dominance and increase estrogen metabolism. Broccoli also contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. 8. Cucumbers Cucumbers are another food that have a high water content and help to flush out harmful toxins from the body. They can help to restore the pH level of the body by neutralizing the acids. They also help to reduce any inflammation within the body. 9. Bell Peppers One highly underestimated food is the bell pepper. Not only can the bell pepper help to neutralize the acid in the body and raise the pH level to alkaline, but it can help to reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and fight cancer. 10. Garlic Like many contained in this list, garlic has so many healthy characteristics that go far beyond restoring the pH level in the body. Garlic helps to support the body’s overall health. It contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Calcium, Copper, Selenium and Manganese. It acts as an antibacterial food, an antiviral food, an antioxidant food, and an anti-fungal food. How to Get the Most out of Vitamin Supplements- Thomas DeLauer

07:50
How to Get the Most out of Vitamin Supplements- Thomas DeLauer: When should you take your vitamins? To learn more about how I can help you, head to http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Many factors play a role on how available vitamins and supplements are when you take them. Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E and K- These are stored in the liver and fat stores in your body, so you do not need to consume these every day. They are easy to get from food as they are not easily broken down by heat when cooking. These are the most important vitamins to eat with food, as the name implies, they are only absorbed and used by the body in the presence of fat. These vitamins dissolve in fat and are then delivered to the bloodstream for use in the body. Not much fat is needed, but if taking a supplement, or even eating fruits and veggies, but sure to have some fat added. If you make a healthy smoothie, add some almond butter or you favorite oil, such as macadamia nut oil. When eating salads, do not use fat-free salad dressings! Olive oil and lemon juice are great options. Be careful if you supplement these vitamins and be sure to check with your doctor if you feel you may need to do so. These vitamins are only needed in small quantities and can build up to a dangerous level if too many are taken. Vitamin D is the main fat-soluble vitamin in the US where deficiencies are common. This is due to inadequate exposure to sunlight. Fortified foods and supplements can help. Try to obtain 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight twice per week to avoid a deficiency, and if this is not possible then talk to your doctor about supplementation. Water-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are water soluble vitamins that you need to be sure to include in your diet daily. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are not stored in your adipose tissue or liver and are in essence washed from your body daily. Food storage and preparation are important when making sure to get sufficient quantities of these vitamins. Deficiencies are uncommon, however vegans do not have a natural source of vitamin B12 and usually need to supplement. While deficiencies are not common, it is still important to consume daily for bodily functioning. As these vitamins dissolve in water, you do not need to take these with foods, although you can if you want to. Minerals: Calcium and Magnesium (2,4) - These are best taken with food and good to take at night. Calcium is linked to improved sleep due to its muscle relaxing abilities and magnesium has calming effects on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Zinc (2,4) - Take with or after meals to avoid stomach upset. Do not take with dairy as calcium hampers absorption. Also avoid taking with iron as large quantities of iron can also hurt your body’s ability to absorb zinc. Avoid taking excess zinc, which can lead to anemia through suppression of copper absorption. Iron (4) - Best to take on an empty stomach. Avoid taking with zinc, calcium and vitamin E as these can decrease absorption. If you have a sensitive stomach you may not do well when taking iron on an empty stomach. If so, take with a light meal. Probiotics (4) - Best to take 30 minutes before a meal as this is when digestive enzymes, bile salts and stomach acid are at low levels. These levels peak after a meal, so this is the worst time to take a probiotic. Fiber (2) - Be sure to separate taking fiber from other nutritional supplements as fiber can hamper mineral absorption. Fish Oil (4) – Fish Oil is best to take with food and with your multivitamin, or other fat-soluble vitamins, if you take them. The fat in the food that you eat can help to aid in digestion and absorption. As fats take a long time for your body to digest, it is best not to take fish oil pills or eat a fatty meal pre-workout. This can cause digestive upset. Multivitamins: As these contain both water- and fat-soluble vitamins, take with plenty of water and some food with fat in it, but try not to take with dairy as this can reduce your absorption of zinc. The Truth about Magnesium & Copper: Food Industry Secrets- Thomas DeLauer

09:54
The Truth about Magnesium & Copper: Food Industry Secrets- Thomas DeLauer.. http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com - More Information on How to be Your Best Self Check out my Favorite Magnesium Brand at: http://www.JigsawHealth.com Magnesium is a mineral that many of us are deficient in because of the standard American diet. The numerous ways that magnesium deficiency are detrimental to health are many and with deeper understanding, the list continues to grow. -Impacts nerve and muscle health There are 18 essential minerals that play roles in all of our body processes. There are 4 that are of particular importance for liver and body health and balance: magnesium, calcium, iron and copper. These 4 are so important because much of our adverse health problems are caused by too much iron and too little magnesium. Magnesium and calcium act together as counterbalances. For example: -Mg calms cells, Ca excites them -Mg necessary to relax muscles, Ca (in concert with potassium) cause muscles to contract -Mg plays a role in keeping blood flowing; Ca is involved in blood clotting -Ca contributes to bone hardness: Mg found mostly in soft body structures -Ca is involved in the fight-or-flight response and in inflammation; Mg is involved in balancing this through calm and reducing inflammation It follows that if we are stressed, maybe caused by work, life, or even extreme exercise, we need plenty of magnesium to regain balance. Magnesium burn rate is the rate at which we burn magnesium. It appears that this rate increases as we age. The idea is to fix mitochondrial functioning through the balancing of magnesium, calcium, iron and copper. Why these four minerals? We have already discussed the importance of calcium and magnesium, so now we should understand iron and copper. Iron is the #1 most abundant mineral on earth. As we go through life, we accumulate iron. Mg and Fe fight over available oxygen. These two mineral events criss-cross at about 40 - when much of the illness, aches and pains kick in. This is largely due to excess iron and deficient magnesium. Iron oxide is involved in the aging processes inside of our mitochondria. It changes enzymatic pathways and can cause a lack of ATP, which our bodies need to function! ATP doesn’t work unless it is complexed with magnesium, which affects the functioning of 3700 proteins in the body. As we go through stress iron builds up in the liver, and as we age magnesium burn rate increases. This rate is also higher when we are under stress. Copper is another important mineral - you can’t make ATP unless you have bioavailable forms of copper. Copper is the mineral that makes sure that things are oxidized properly. Dr. Morley’s RCP: Concentrate on the stops and the starts to get this in balance. Stops: 1. Stop taking hormone/vitamin D a. V D stops the liver’s production of ceruloplasmin i. Low vitamin D due to low magnesium. Every facet of VD metabolism is magnesium dependent. Taking VD can make the situation worse 2. Stop taking calcium and iron supplements 3. Stop taking ascorbic acid 4. Stay clear of high fructose corn syrup and colors 5. Stop lowfat - have plenty of fat in the diet, it is important 6. Stop using industrialized oils based on omega-6 fats 7. Steer clear of fluoride - far reaching and profound effect 8. No multivitamins or prenatals 9. No citrate - disrupts liver’s ability to make ceruloplasmin 10. No colloidal silver - it impacts copper status (silver sits below copper on the periodic table) Starts: 1. Use cod liver oil 2. Start magnesium supplementation 3. Whole food vitamin c 4. Forms of B-vitamins from way of mother nature - bee pollen, rice bran, beef liver 5. Use silica - helps to pull aluminum out of the liver 6. Start ancestral diet 7. Take boron, taurine and iodine Learn to distinguish between functional and absolute iron deficiency - almost impossible to have a total shortage of iron, but you can have a shortage of functional iron. Happens when don’t have enough bioavailable copper. Anemia of chronic inflammation leads to low Mg, low ceruloplasmin, low serum iron, etc. Excess unbound iron will lead to a loss of magnesium due to pH of a cell to be too acidic which leads to magnesium loss which leads to inflammation. Inflammation is a clinical indication of deficient magnesium, which was originally determined in 1992 in a study on rats where magnesium deficient diets led to an increase in inflammatory markers. Inflammation is a gateway to many diseases. Additionally, pathogens feed on iron, so we do not want to have excess iron levels in our diet. References: 1. 5 Foods High in Potassium that Aren't Bananas- Thomas DeLauer

07:00
5 Potassium Rich Foods that Aren't Bananas is an exclusive look at Potassium and the importance it plays in the body. For more tips and information on my 1:1 coaching, visit http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com and click on "Coaching." Now, potassium is critical. It doesn't just come down to muscle cramping. Potassium has a lot of different functions in the body. It's what's called a mineral electrolyte, and what that means is that it helps balance fluid within the body. This is super critical to things like blood pressure. It's also critical to fluid retention. If you've ever felt puffy, or after you go out and have a lot of sodium, you feel puffy, because you don't have that balance between potassium and sodium like you normally do. These are all signs of potassium issues. Potassium also aids in maintaining a proper acid level within the body -- a proper PH -- so it's critical for that. It's also critical for nerve firing, so if you're into working out, if you're trying to get in shape, it is super important that your potassium levels are stored where they need to be so that your muscles can contract the right way. Let's talk about how potassium pertains to exercise, and I want to lead off with a study that I found that was pretty interesting. According to the Journal of Athletic Training, back in 2005, they conducted a pretty interesting study where they took two groups of people. One group of people, they gave a placebo drink. It was just purely water, and they had them exercise for a couple of hours. Now, the other group, they gave them an electrolyte drink loaded with potassium. Well, what was interesting is that those that had the potassium drink literally lasted twice as long in strenuous exercise than those that didn't. The first food that I recommend you eat are beans. The reason I picked beans is because they are so low-glycemic. They don't have a huge effect on blood sugar. I recommend going with something like a pinto bean, because when it all comes down to it, pinto beans have less of what's called an amylase inhibitor, that amylase inhibitor that is present in a lot of other beans, like black beans, can sometimes inhibit the digestion of protein, so go with a light colored bean. The next food I want to talk about is something that is not too exciting, and that's going to be simple spinach or chard. Super, super rich in potassium, again, about thirty percent of your daily value in just a cup. Here's the cool thing, is if you saute that spinach, that one cup of spinach, when you saute it with some coconut oil, not only is it going to help the absorption of the other vitamins and minerals within the spinach, but it's also going to shrink it down so it's practically nothing. The next one is one of my personal favorites, and that is simply some squash. Squashes are great, because again, they're super low-glycemic. They don't affect your blood sugar that much. They're super high in fiber, so they're going to help lubricate the digestive system and get everything moving, but most of all, they're super high in potassium. An acorn squash, to be specific, is going to be one of the best potassium-rich squashes that you can eat. The next one that is another one of my personal favorites is avocados. You watch a lot of my videos, you know I'm a huge advocate of a high-fat diet, simply because so much of our hormone function requires a high level of good fats. Avocado is one of the best healthy fats that you can get, but one half of an avocado also contains about twenty five percent of your daily value of potassium. Now, let's talk about what everyone wants to hear, the shortcut, right? If you're going to take a potassium supplement, which I don't necessarily think is bad -- we all need potassium, we all need magnesium, we all need these minerals because they keep us in balance -- but one of the most common mistakes people make is they go for something like a potassium gluconate, which is okay, but here's the thing. It's water-soluble, so you take that potassium gluconate, your body's going to take what it need immediately and then excrete the rest out. This poses problem if you're trying to have a sustained release of potassium throughout the day, so you want to look for potassium chloride. It's a little bit easier for your body to break down over time, and you're not just going to eliminate it immediately, so if you're exercising strenuously and you need to have that sustained release of potassium, look for that potassium chloride. Potassium gluconate is great if you've got an immediate cramp and you need to get some potassium in you right away. There you have it. We don't have to keep the banana business in business simply because we have muscle cramps all the time, so go and get some potassium in you and see how much better those nerves fire, how much quicker you recover, and how much more brainpower you have after just one or two additional servings.

Key Vitamins & Minerals on a Ketogenic Diet Plan

Recommended Nutrients: B-vitamins: https://shop.drberg.com/nutritional-yeast-regular Minerals: https://shop.drberg.com/electrolyte-powder-regular Take Dr. Berg's Free Keto Mini-Course: http://pxlme.me/-i717vtY or go here: https://www.drberg.com/how-to-do-ketosis Download Keto Essentials https://m.me/drericberg?ref=w2128577 Dr. Berg talks about what key multivitamins and minerals on a ketogenic diet plan. The first vitamin that is needed is the B-vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, etc.). Minerals are also needed as in potassium (4700 mg), magnesium and sodium - these electrolytes are need to prevent deficiencies. You also need D3, omega 3 and even trace minerals. This provides you the key nutrients to make this transition from glucose to fat burning efficiently. Hi guys, I recently have a question what multivitamins and minerals do I need in a ketogenic diet. Well, the first thing you need to do and a lot of people will use vitamins because they don’t want to consume the amount of vegetables that they really need. You really need to do that because we want to get as many vitamins and minerals from the vegetables as possible, 7 to 10 cups. Not just for the vitamins and minerals but to flush out the fat, we need that greens and healthy vegetables. However, when you are switching from sugar burning to fat burning, when you are adopting, you need more of certain nutrients and you definitely need more B vitamins, vitamin B6, B5, B1 and B12. I recommend getting this in the nutritional yeast, you can get it in powder. I have nutritional yeast in tablet form to make it easier to consume and this is a non-fortified. When you consume nutritional yeast, you don’t want to fortify or enrich it with synthetic vitamins but I also added some natural B12. You also need minerals specifically potassium, magnesium and sodium. When you are in a low carb diet you need more salt, consume about 1teaspoon of salt. If you are in a high carbohydrate diet only have a quarter teaspoon of salt. We do need a lot of potassium and a good amount of magnesium. I use electrolyte powder because it has a thousand mg of potassium citrate, good amount of magnesium and has a little bit of sodium. You may need to enhance sodium because this is not have a lot of sodium but this is cool because it doesn’t have a lot of maltodextrin, it doesn’t have the sugar and it has the trace minerals on it as well. You also need vitamin D3, you can get this on sunlight or fish oils, in that way you can kill two birds in one stone and you can get you omega 3. If you can get high quality cod liver oil, you can get D3 and Omega 3. And you have trace minerals which are those minerals are needed in much smaller amounts, and it is hard to find that in the diet and it can really help you. An example would be chromium, iodine, selenium. Again, the goal is to get as much of the vitamins and minerals from the food but I also recommend enhancing it with B vitamins, minerals, D3, Omega 3 and trace minerals. Top 10 Vegetarian Protein Sources

05:58
Proteins are the building blocks of body tissue, and even give the body the energy it needs to grow and develop properly. When protein is digested, it breaks down into amino acids. The Institute of Medicine says that women need at least 46 grams of protein a day, and men need at least 56 grams a day. Here are the top 10 sources of protein for vegetarians 1. Greek Yogurt Greek yogurt, which has the whey strained out of it, is a great source of protein. A 6-ounce cup of Greek yogurt has 15- 20 grams of protein. That’s much more than regular yogurt, which has about 9 grams of protein. This probiotic food also has a lot of vitamins and minerals. Eating Greek yogurt all the time will help your digestive system stay healthy, boost your immune system, help with weight loss, stop high blood pressure, lower bad cholesterol, and fight yeast infections. 2. Lentils Lentils is another good choice for protein. But they are not a full protein food because they don’t have all nine important amino acids. One cup of boiled lentils has 18 grams of protein. There are many good health reasons to eat lentils. They give energy, lower the risk of heart disease, help keep a normal body weight, and keep the digestive system healthy. 3. Edamame Edamame is a full protein food, important amino acids you need in your diet. One cup of cooked edamame has 17 grams of protein. Edamame beans have fiber, vitamins, minerals, and healthy polyunsaturated fats, especially omega-3 alpha- linolenic acid. They are also naturally gluten- free and don’t have a lot of calories. 4. Kidney Beans Kidney beans are another great source of protein. One cup of boiled kidney beans has 15 grams of protein. They have all nine amino acids, but they are not a full protein because they don’t have a lot of methionine, a proteinogenic amino acid. Kidney beans have a lot of fiber, folate, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and vitamins K and B6. They are also low in fat and cholesterol. 5. Tofu Tofu is a soy milk product, and is also a good source of protein. ½ a cup of tofu has 10 grams of protein. It has eight important amino acids and a lot of iron and calcium. It also has manganese, selenium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, zinc and vitamin B1. 6. Chia Seeds Another good source of protein for vegetarians is chia seeds. Two tablespoons of chia seeds will give you 9.4 grams of protein. They are also one of the best plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Chia seeds can help with digestion, treat anemia, give you energy, control blood sugar, stop aging signs, and boost brainpower. 7. Quinoa Quinoa has all nine important amino acids, and is a full protein source. One cup of cooked quinoa has 8.14 grams of protein. Quinoa also has fiber, iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and folate. Eating quinoa every day can lessen swelling and lower your risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and colon cancer. It can also help your digestion and help you keep a healthy body weight. 8. Soy Milk Soy milk is used instead of milk by a lot of vegans and people who are lactose intolerant and cannot drink milk. It is full of protein and has vitamins A, B12, and D. One cup of soy milk has 8 grams of protein. 9. Green Peas One of the best sources of vegetable protein is green peas, or any peas for that matter. Green peas also have fiber, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, folate, and vitamins B, C, A, and K. They are also low in calories. One cup of cooked green peas gives you about 8 to 10 grams of protein. Green peas can help lower the risk of heart disease, arthritis, and type 2 diabetes. 10. Peanut Butter Peanut butter is another great way to get protein. This nut butter is a good source of monounsaturated fat and fiber. It is also full of vitamins. Just 2 tablespoons of peanut butter has 8 grams of protein. If you’re careful not to eat too much of it at once, this butter can help lower bad cholesterol and help you keep a normal weight. 8 Healthy Foods That Pack a Vitamin B12 Boost

07:42
8 Healthy Foods That Pack a Vitamin B12 Boost: 1. Beef Health.com lists good ol’ beef as one of the best sources of B12 out there. Not only is beef delicious, it offers about 1.3-micrograms of B12 in 3-ounces of broiled top loin sirloin, according to the source. The site adds that beef is also a great source of zinc (7-miligrams per 3-ounces), which is also important for certain functions of the body. As an added bonus, you’ll get a healthy dose of protein and riboflavin. However, it’s high in cholesterol, so don’t overdo your portions, it adds. 2. Turkey Who doesn’t love a good turkey – at least twice a year? You may want to consume more of this delicious bird when you know that it delivers 48.2-micrograms of B12 per cup, according to GoodHousekeeping.com. However, turkey is another meal you may not want to overdo – it contains tryptophan, an amino acid associated with making you feel sleepy (which is sort of in competition with the benefits of B12). However, other sources point out the tiredness may not be from the tryptophan – it can just be from consuming too much food. 3. Fortified Almond/Coconut Milk If you’re vegan or vegetarian, the first 2-options aren’t going to appeal to you very much. In fact, sources note that many vegans aren’t getting enough B12 (and should consider supplements), but can avoid problems through eating B12 fortified foods – and other sources like fortified non-dairy milk. Oldways lists some popular vegan Vitamin B12 sources, including fortified almond milk and fortified coconut milk, both of which can deliver 3-micrograms of B12 per cup. Meanwhile, soymilk fortified with the same vitamin may only deliver 1.2-micrograms per cup depending on the product. 4. Dairy Milk Low-fat dairy milk will deliver about 1.2-micrograms of B12 per cup as well, according to Health.com. The other advantages of low-fat milk is that it packs calcium and Vitamin D, and could even help women avoid PMS symptoms, according to the source. It points out that a study found women who consumed “more than one” serving of high-fat dairy were significantly less likely to experience ovulation problems. Anyways, back to the topic – if you don’t like milk on it own, try it in a smoothie with frozen fruit and ginger, suggests Health.com. 5. Shellfish There are a handful of shellfish that deliver a healthy punch of B12, so we’ll group them altogether here. For example, clams rank high for B12, potassium, and iron, according to GoodHousekeeping.com, which calls clams a “surprising king of the superfoods”. Then there are oysters, a “top source” of B12 and also high in iron, and crabs (which fall under the crustacean category), which apparently contain 9.8-micrograms of B12 per 3-ounces (which is significantly more than beef). “If you buy red and blue king crabs, look for ones from the U.S,” notes the site. Mussels also rank very high on the B12 hierarchy. 6. Eggs If you’re not a meat eater, you may still enjoy some eggs now and then – not only are they delicious and versatile for a variety of recipes and styles, they’re a great source of Vitamin B12. How great? Livestrong.com breaks it down for you. The source explains that one large egg contains 0.45-micrograms of B12, which translates to 19-percent of the daily-recommended intake. Of course, as you might imagine, if you go for the extra large or jumbo variety of eggs, you’ll get a bigger hit of the essential vitamin. Eggs are also a great way to get protein you may be missing from meat. 7. Salmon Fish are swimming with B12, and salmon ranks high on the list. Health.com notes that 3-ounces of salmon contains about 4.8-micrograms of the vitamin. It’s also high in protein and Omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for your heart. The source adds that one 3-ounce serving of salmon will deliver more than your daily need of Vitamin D, which is normally absorbed from sunlight. “To maximize salmon’s many health benefits, experts recommend baking it in the oven or grilling it instead of eating it fried, dried, or salted,” notes the source. Haddock, trout and tuna are great (and possibly less expensive) B12 alternatives to salmon, it adds. 8. Swiss Cheese While some foods are full of holes when it comes to B12 content, Swiss is apparently the best source in the cheese kingdom. Healthaliciousness.com lists Swiss cheese as one of the top-5 natural vegetarian sources of this vitamin. The delish Swiss variety provides 3.34-micograms of B12 per 100-grams, while gjetost, mozzarella, tilsit and feta are the next best sources of the vitamin (in that order). How about cheddar you ask? It ranks on the lower end of the cheese scale for B12, at 0.24-micrograms per ounce (28-grams).
