I also explain a number of nuances that come up when you actually open a bookstore and try to make it profitable. When you write a business plan for a bookstore (book store?), make sure you take into full account the growing trend of people buying books online and not in a bookstore. That means that you have to have a strategy for how to get people to buy books in your bookstore, and not online. The challenge is that no matter how great this strategy might seem, it is just theory. And the way you tell whether that theory is correct is to actually open a bookstore. But that is problematic because to open a bookstore is too much risk to take on before you find out whether this business will work. 작은 서점의 생존비법 Once overshadowed by the rise of mega book chains and online bookstores, small bookstores are making a comeback with a strong sense of identity and warmth that big businesses don't possess. What made them survive a David and Goliath style battle against chain bookstores? This store is located in a trendy neighborhood in Seoul that is popular with young people. At a glance, the place looks like any other cafe. But the walls are covered with bookshelves full of interesting reads. At this bookstore, visitors need to first purchase a book to sit down and read it. They can also buy coffee or beverages to enjoy while reading. "I like that I can buy and read a book I want and enjoy beverages at the same time."This is another bookstore located at the heart of the Gangnam area, Seoul. Friday night at 10 p.m. is when most bookstores close. But here, it is when the fun starts. "I saw a post on BOOKTIQUE's social media account about the "Midnight Bookstore" program on Fridays. I came with my boyfriend to stay up all night reading." The "Midnight Bookstore" program runs from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next morning. At a 10 U.S. dollar admission, visitors can pull an all-nighter reading books in peace and quiet. They can also help themselves with soft drinks and beer. "There are many office workers in the Gangnam area. They deserve a break after a busy week of overtime work and company dinner. We wanted them to indulge in books instead of alcohol on Friday nights."The bookstore has been trending on social media as a must visit in the Gangnam district, where small bookstores have become a rarity. In addition to selling books, the store hosts book readings, reviews and discussions. "The selection of books is important, but we are focusing more on the readers, the people. We have the space to coordinate different activities to help them create a community and involve non-readers." Following the advent of online bookstores offering generous discounts and the decline of the publishing industry in the 2000s, brick and mortar bookstores have been disappearing. The number of bookstores in Korea plummeted from about 5,500 in 1995 to 1,500 in 2015. Small bookstores were the hardest hit. The share of small bookstores operating on less than 66 square meters fell from 51.9% in 2005 to 32.4% in 2015. What small bookstores needed the most was a unique sense of identity that would set them apart from book chains."Small bookstores in the U.S. or Europe organize a "buy local" campaign. They attract customers with a specialized collection of books. Above all, they focus on their role as community cultural centers to stay competitive."Small bookstores are enjoying a revival, thanks to their warm and friendly atmosphere that is often hard to find at mega book chains. They serve as a community gathering spot for author events or book discussions. Instead of focusing solely on bestsellers, these stores offer thoughtfully selected titles that reflect the tastes and preferences of the owner. Hidden in a dark alley in Seoul is a small independent bookstore owned by Kim Jong-hyeon. The store sells both books and alcohol. About 80 percent of the store's selection is titles published by small presses or individuals like Kim himself. The remaining 20 percent is books that Kim wants to recommend to potential readers. There are no bestsellers in sight, but the cosy bookstore has created an intimate community for neighbors who share the same interests as the owner. The long table in the middle of the store is a symbol of this place. "People who come here share similar tastes, so I like interacting with them in events organized here like movie screenings or book discussions. I like how this place has something that you can't find elsewhere."Kim's store is among the growing number of independent bookstores that offer rare titles and a themed collection of books. Their number has doubled in the past two years. Some believe these stores could bring a renaissance of small mom-and-pop bookstores. "For the latest independent bookstore boom to take root as a culture, we need the places that sell independent publications and where readers can interact with one another. This could create consumers and content producers. This virtuous cycle can help lay the foundation. Independent bookstores are springing up, but I don't see them as competition. It's a great sign that we can start a culture."Small bookstores have transformed into a cultural space with personality. It would be interesting to watch if they can provide just the boost that the publishing industry needs. It happened to the record stores, and now it is the book stores' turn. When so much of our daily life is spent online, there is increasingly less time to read a good book. While some traditional bookstores are closing down, others are adapting, finding new markets, and catering to a different kind of customer. Many book authors think social media will be the solution to selling their books. Unfortunately, social media alone will not sell your book. You need a great plan, a catchy hook for your book to get people interested, and a few other key strategies to attract buyers and get readers. In this video, Julie Broad of Book Launchers reveals why social media isn't a stand alone solution for you to sell more books and gives you 5 practical tips to sell more books. You can also download the free gameplan mentioned in the video here: http://booklaunchers.com/sellbooks Watch more videos on self publishing your book here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Q_OYEVGRgU&t=1s&index=17&list=PLh6B5bRioc1xbOL3E5q9f35g5OLHS2bTS Subscribe for weekly videos about self publishing from Julie Broad: http://www.youtube.com/user/julieabroad?sub_confirmation=1 If you are interested in self publishing your book, visit Julie Broad website: http://booklaunchers.com/ Or feel free to connect with her on social media: http://twitter.com/thejuliebroad http://facebook.com/booklaunchers Transcript of Social Media Won't Sell Your Books - 5 Things that Will video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPaFwteyAnc “ If you're thinking social media is gonna be the solution to sell your book, stick around. I've got a few thoughts on that for you. A lot of authors come to me thinking social media is how they're going to sell their book, but social media isn't a catch all solution to sell your book. FIRST: First, you need a plan to sell your book from the start. Your book, it needs a hook. To know what will hook your readers, you need to know who your readers are. SECOND: You need to figure out where those people are hanging out. Even though there are two billion people on Facebook, it's not always the best platform to reach your readers. Surprise. For some types of books, you're gonna find readers hanging out on Goodreads, but a lot of times, you're actually gonna find them offline, at conferences, trade shows. They might be reading magazines or frequenting certain types of businesses in your area, or they might be searching for solutions on videos or podcasts. Social media might be the answer, but there may be better ways to find your ideal reader. THIRD: Consider who you know. The success of my first book More Than Cashflow was entirely as a result of the support of a handful of key people in the Canadian real estate industry. Their support, promoting my book to all of their audience, is the reason it went to number one overall on Amazon. Without them, when I was promoting the book to my audience, I was able to break the top 100 overall, but it was because of them that I hit number one. Tim Ferriss, he launched The Four Hour Workweek to massive best selling status a little over 10 years ago now, using relationships that he'd built with bloggers. If you're at platinum level of Book Launchers, we pitch your book to bloggers and podcasters on your behalf, and we'll get you some exposure, but the people who are going to help you the most will know you personally. If you want your book to do well, make sure you're building relationships, adding value, and supporting people in your industry so that they will do the same when the time comes for you and your book. FOURTH: Develop your own list. Social media is not a catchall solution, as I mentioned. You're squatting. You actually don't own these contacts. You get to use them, but at the end of the day, make sure you own your own list, so drive people to your website. Connect with them, collect their emails, and then use social media for multiple touch points. At any time, the owner of the property, Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, they can decide that they no longer like the way you're using their property and throw you out. If they do that, and you haven't been building your own connections on your website, you'll lose everything, so make sure you're connecting with people in other ways, where you can control the list and you own it, and then use social media to supplement your book marketing strategy. FIFTH: Whatever you do, make sure you have other ways to connect and contact your potential readers. These folks will be the most likely to buy your book, spread the word for you, and help with early reviews. Bottom line, social media offers a way for readers to interact with you. It's a great way to stay top of mind and build connections, but for social media to work, you must know who you're writing for, what's going to get their attention, and find a way to get yourself in front of those people. Best of luck with your book, and if you want help figuring out who you're writing for and have support through the entire self-publishing process, book a call with me. I'm happy to chat to see if we're a fit to help you write, publish, and promote your book“

http://www.ebookpublishingschool.com Amy Collins is the author of The Write Way: Everything You Need to Know About Publishing, Selling and Marketing Your Book. She worked as a Book Buyer for a large books and magazines publisher, selling to Barnes & Noble, Target, Costco, Airport Stores, Walmart, Books-A-Million and other major book retailers. Amy used to be a musician. She needed Christmas presents one year and decided to take a part-time job at a bookstore. When the season was over she planned to return to her life as a singer but she was persuaded to stay on. A year later she became the book buyer for that store. Within a year she was promoted to book buyer for the entire chain of 16 stores. She was offered a job as a sales rep for Prima Publishing (now a division of Random House). Five years after that she became director of sales for a nonfiction publishing house in Boston. Ten years ago Amy decided to start her own business and level the playing field for small publishing houses and independent publishers. She wanted to give them the same opportunities that the big publishing houses have to distribute their books to stores and libraries. This interview was information packed! We talked about how to develop marketing plans, productivity, various revenue streams that authors can receive, and how to get your book into brick and mortar bookstores and libraries. There are several different revenue streams that authors can receive from libraries from direct sales to licensing deals and more. If you want to learn even more about Amy’s step-by-step process for getting self published books into libraries after you listen to this podcast, you can check out the free webinar with Amy where she walks you through the library distribution process for self published authors. Here are some of the takeaways from the interview with Amy: • The rules change every six months. You have to stay informed and know what’s happening in the publishing industry. • Print-on-Demand (POD) is a business model that allows you as the publisher to take advantage of the technology of digital printing along with just-in-time ordering to create a print on demand program for your readers. • If your book is 300 pages or less and black and white, or a children’s book that’s 48 pages or less, print on demand is a wonderful business model that allows you to earn $2 in profit for each book (which is all you should expect anyway) and take all the risk out of it. • If you realize there is a mistake you can fix it almost instantly and all future versions of your book will be corrected. In the old days Amy would have to throw out the entire run of a book with a printing error in it. Now all you have to do is correct the book file, send it to CreateSpace or Ingram Lightning Source and move forward. • It’s possible to get a print on demand book into libraries and the bookstore chains today, and Amy has helped hundreds of self published authors do just that. • If you want your book in libraries and bookstores you need your book to be professionally edited and have a professionally designed book cover. • If you have a quality book, the fact that it is print on demand won’t prevent you from getting into libraries and bookstores. • Independent brick-and-mortar bookstores are a growing sector of the economy. In 2009, there were 1,691 independent bookstores. Today there are over 2,100 independent bookstores. • If you want to get into independent bookstores, approach the American Booksellers Association. They have some wonderful programs that aren’t too expensive. Get your book into the White Box Program. • The key to getting your book into bookstores as an indie author is to start locally. Start with your local bookstore and library. Go see the manager and head librarian and give them a copy of your book. Local businesses and libraries want to see authors from the area succeed. • The big chains are different. To get into Barnes & Noble or Books-A-Million you have to start by pitching to someone at their corporate offices. • It’s easier to convince a librarian to give your book a chance. Librarians always want to see local authors succeed. • Bookstores don’t like to give their money to Amazon. If you want to sell your book in brick-and-mortar bookstores sign up for the print on demand services at Ingram Spark a.k.a. Lightning Source. Self Publishing, Why Self Publish - http://www.WhySelfPublish.net Do you have questions about Self Publishing? Sign up for a free video series at http://www.WhySelfPublish.net --------------------------------- Hi, this is Lisa Michelle Umina from Halo Publishing. In this video, I'll answer a question: How do I get my books into the physical bookstores? The first step into doing is obviously you need to have a marketing plan. The bookstore buyer wants to hear what are you going out in the community to gain people to come into the bookstore and buy the book? A bookstore doesn't want to shelf the books; they're in the business to sell the books. They're looking for authors that are out there marketing their book through media, TV, radio, if they're doing author presentations at colleges or at the local schools or libraries, they want to hear that you're out there actively promoting your book. The second part into getting your book into the physical bookstores is to have the bookstore order from distributors. The distributors that are known in the US are Ingram and Baker and Taylor. Those are the two companies that work with the bookstore to get the book to the bookstore. Bookstores do no have the time to contact authors and publishers. If their book is in demand or coming into their store and requesting the book, they're going to contact not the author, not the publisher; they're going to contact Ingram distribution or Baker and Taylor. Sometimes people will ask, "If you're going to publish the book, will my book be in all the book stores?" Something you need to know, which is really important. If your book needs to be in a Barnes and Noble bookstore on a national level, that means thousands of books are being printed and shipped to those locations nationwide. If you do not have a marketing plan on a national level or plan on touring at a national level, or doing any kind of Internet marketing on a national level, those books will be returned and you will be responsible for not only paying for the returns; you'll be paying for the shipping. Thirdly, I suggest working with local bookstores that are family owned and walking into the store and meeting the book store owner, explaining to them what your plan is, what your target audience is and how you both can partner together to host an event at the book store because now you have a personal relationship with that store owner who doesn't change every 30 days or 60 days or other large bookstores. You have that personal relationship and that bookstore owner knows that you're out there canvasing and marketing yourself and your book and it makes for a perfect relationship. How do you get your book into physical bookstores? You have to have a marketing plan in place. Having scheduled author signings, other appearances and getting yourself out there in the media to create awareness so that people want to be your book and there's your demand and there's where the store will buy your book. Second, if you want to have your books in the bookstore, have them buy the book directly from Ingram or Baker and Taylor. They'll be the ones that will be ordering the book through distribution. You will not have to handle your own book sales. And third, build relationships on a personal level so that you know the store owner and they know you and they know your book and you can partner with these book stores to help give you customers the book. Even the most fabulous self published book will not sell itself. Author Julie Broad explains the 5 best ways she used to sell her books (including the combination that helped her get her book to #1 overall on Amazon in it's first week of distribution). If you want to figure out how you're going to get readers, sell your book, and top the Amazon charts watch this video till the end. She also reveals one tip about what does not sell books! It might surprise you. Watch more videos on self publishing your book here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRMXsS2YF8s&list=PLh6B5bRioc1xbOL3E5q9f35g5OLHS2bTS&index=19 Subscribe for weekly videos about self publishing from Julie Broad: http://www.youtube.com/user/julieabroad?sub_confirmation=1 If you are interested in self publishing your book, visit Book Launchers website: http://booklaunchers.com/ Connect with us on social media: http://twitter.com/thejuliebroad http://facebook.com/booklaunchers Video transcript: I don't know if you flown in the month of October but Malcolm Gladwell's new book David and Goliath is everywhere and you might think it's because Malcolm Gladwell is a big name now right if you haven't read the tipping point or any of his other books outliers etc you've probably at least heard of who he is but he still had to pay for that coveted space now I'm not clear Businessweek said that they wouldn't say exactly how much they paid but that that Hudson news usually sells that space per store for several thousand dollars. If you're Malcolm Gladwell you can probably foot the bill for that because you get a couple of talks for fifty to eighty five thousand dollars plus proceeds from the book deal it's probably okay right but most of us aren't Malcolm Gladwell so we're going to have to find ways that don't cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars to get distribution and of course readers for our fabulous work of book. NUMBER ONE: ONLINE PRESENCE: For me been writing a newsletter for seven years I had built up a fantastic base of wonderful folks who not only bought my book but told other people when my book came out so that was critical but if you are writing your book already and you haven't spent seven years writing good newsletter there's no time like right now yeah right now you might even want to turn off this video and get to work on it to build an online presence and ideally get newsletter subscribers and social media followers and friends. NUMBER TWO: FRIENDS: This was the second kind of my secret weapon that that I got with my fabulous readers who thank you thank you I'm still so grateful for you buying books when it came out and now still and for your Amazon reviews but my secret weapon that got me to number one I think we broke top ten without friends but we never would have got to number one if it weren't for the fabulous support of some of our friends Nick and Tom crowds of rock star real estate in particular sent some really great promotions out to their fantastic folks and that really gave us the boost we needed to get to number one. So start networking folks because it's hard to do it all alone friends referring and recommending you and your book is going to be a huge help to you. NUMBER THREE: SPEAKING: I'm sorry if you really thought you could just sit behind your computer and tick away and sell books but speaking is really really a solid way to sell books if you have a short talk you can find business networking groups meetup groups NUMBER FOUR: PUBLIC RELATIONS: I think that while TV looks the coolest and people think it's the coolest I actually think that the newspaper articles and the radio spots I've done have generated the most results and I try to track it but you can't really tell right you don't really know where your book sales are coming from but people who come out to my book events who've heard of me for the first time are coming from newspaper or radio they're not coming from the TV shows. NUMBER FIVE: PROMOTION: Now, this is what we did in the launch to really boost it right and back this this and this all combined together are what gave us a really really strong start out of the gate but even now if I have a store that has a lot of leftover stock then I might run a city specific promotion to help sell books so that can be you know one on one coaching calls it can be some of your friends who blog may have e-books or other courses or services that they'll offer to buyers of your book so when they send you a receipt proving they bought your book you can then send them or sign them up for these other services sound good right it helps to sell books. THE THING THAT DOESN’t WORK: BOOKSTORE SIGNINGS Kind of .... yeah really listen a lot of my friends are like oh I've seen all your book signings it looks so cool and some of them have been pretty good but the reality is that getting people to come out to a bookstore to buy a book these days it's actually really hard

“I’m going to go do this crazy thing. I’m going to start this company selling books online.” »»﴿───► See more on the Business Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIZqvqbtz9I2ucCbARttn_G3A6wZ1Xwsu Check out our Patreon rewards! https://www.patreon.com/ManufacturingIntellect In 1994, Jeff Bezos was a 30-year-old vice president of a New York investment firm, newly married, with a secure and prosperous future ahead of him. He decided to give it all up and drive to Seattle with his wife, in a used car, to start a business in their garage. He was betting his own savings — and his parents’ and friends’ — on a totally untried notion: that people would buy books through a little-known network of computers called the Internet. Jeff Bezos was convinced that this global network, primarily the domain of academics and government scientists, could become a vibrant new venue for commerce, with the right product and the right plan. Almost overnight, the company Bezos started, Amazon.com, changed the book-buying habits of a nation. Bezos and his investors found their shares in the company worth billions. As the company’s capitalization soared, Bezos embarked on a risky strategy of expansion, forgoing immediate profits to secure an ever-larger share of the Internet market, not only in books, but in music, videos, electronics, toys and clothing. At the turn of the 21st century, the Internet bubble burst, and fortunes seemingly made overnight literally vanished. Yet Amazon flowed on like its mighty namesake, still expanding, but also showing profits, while other promising start-ups faded from the scene. Once-daunting competitors had become grateful partners. The vision of Jeff Bezos had prevailed, and the world of commerce had changed forever.

Tracey Ryniec and David Bartosiak, Stock Strategists at Zacks Investment Research, discuss Amazon’s recent opening of its first ever brick and mortar bookstore in Seattle called Amazon Books. Amazon first began as a company that sold books online. Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, believed it was more efficient to sell books online because a bookstore could never carry as many books as distribution centers. That meant Amazon was able to carry obscure and out of print titles, along with foreign names. But now, with the invention of the Kindle and other e-readers, many people get their books on electronic devices. While Amazon Books will feature its electronic devices, the real stars will still be the books. Tracey and David discuss the irony of Amazon going brick and mortar. Is this just a one-shop strategy or are there plans to roll Amazon Books out to other cities? Why would a company with billions in online sales even bother with a store? David also takes a look at the chart as shares have been soaring. Is there further upside in the shares? My first 2 months selling books on Amazon - How to sell on Amazon ☆ Check out the tools and supplies I personally use at the bottom ☆ I hope you enjoy this video as it’s a pre-intro to whats to come regarding how to sell on Amazon. I will be recording videos explaining my journey as an Amazon seller where I created an Amazon seller account to make money selling books on Amazon. At first I started fulfilling the orders myself (merchant fulfilled) however I soon discovered the benefits of fulfillment by Amazon (FBA). I signed up on 11/11/2016 which is only about 2 months ago and I’ve already made several thousand dollars in sales! It wasn’t too long after the sales started coming in that I saw this being more of a business and an entrepreneurship. I read many sites and watched many videos on how to sell on amazon FBA and how to sell books on Amazon which helped me through the process. Of course I hit a few road blocks and made mistakes but I learned and I will be sharing all of that with you along the way. The series of videos will explain how I got started selling books on Amazon, the equipment I purchased, the business models I came up with and changed a few times along the way and much more. This of the series is a collection of how to videos specifically focusing on selling on Amazon. There is definitely money to be made and even a way to make a small business out of this e-commerce opportunity. With books, shipping is easy and fairly cheap, very little returns since there aren’t any moving parts and the profit margins are incredible. So why wouldn’t you start selling books on Amazon? Get started now and stay tuned for more videos to help YOU along the way. #QOTD: What animal scares the crap out of you? #TIMESTAMPS 1:24 - How do you optimize the use of hashtags for campaigns? 4:18 - You've talked before about 'recycling' a tweet, but what about other content such as a blog post? How often do you pull a piece from the archives to dust it off and republish? 6:39 - If you were going to market for a brick-and-mortar bookshop, where would you start? 10:03 - How do I overcome my people pleasing nature? 11:18 - As a b2b manufacturer of building products, how much time/$$ should we spend on marketing to consumers vs customers? #LINKS One Is Greater Than Zero: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fsYWXrGGcE GaryVee Loves Twitter Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUy45S2eTZs Ask a question: https://www.garyvaynerchuk.com/what-youll-need-to-get-garyvee-945936926.html http://instagram.com/joshguilar/ Hashtag culture is very important, especially to Instagram and Twitter. Those are really the two places that it massively over-indexes. It's an incredible way to get discovered. If you're asking "How do I get my hashtag going", you might be in for a surprise with my reply. I have the #AskGaryVee hashtag, but it's really a way for me to gather questions, as well as create a community that people can talk to each other on. For a campaign, it's different. You need to understand two things. One, hashtags are not ownable. Maybe some of you didn't get it, so I'll say it again: hashtags are not ownable. It is insane to me that people in 2015 still think you can own a hashtag. I walk into a lot of brand meetings where people will say things like "Let's own the #GetEm hashtag." My usual response is: what the hell are you talking about? First and foremost, any hashtag you create could be taken tomorrow by someone else and used differently. If you can remember all the way back to 2009, Skittles put out a hashtag and ended up with a lot of really crude things on their hashtag. Even worse, Skittles made their homepage a feed of that hashtag, where everything that was posted using it showed up. Yikes. It still happens today. So, how do you optimize hashtags for a campaign? Flip it. Instead of trying to own or establish a hashtag for a campaign, look at hashtags that are trending and very popular on the two main platforms already and try to figure out how to reverse into them by putting out your piece of content, storytelling. Ride the wave. Be creative. -- Gary Vaynerchuk builds businesses. Fresh out of college he took his family wine business and grew it from a $3M to a $60M business in just five years. Now he runs VaynerMedia, one of the world's hottest digital agencies.
