This broad range is due to many factors including geographic location, method of treatment pursued and severity of each case. And while the condition is usually covered by health insurance, it can still leave many affected with the disease in a dire financial state. 60% of bankruptcies in the United States each year are caused by unexpected medical expenses. The good news is that there is help in the form of breast cancer financial assistance programs that provide grants to those diagnosed with breast cancer who experience severe financial difficulty. This video showcases the story of Emily -- a fictional character who was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Emily requires expensive medical care and her husband, James, discovers during the course of his online research that Emily’s life insurance policy could potentially be leveraged as a cash asset to help defray the cost of medical bills. We invite you to view this short video to learn how Emily and James were able to finance her medical care by discovering the hidden value in an insurance policy that they were about to let lapse. While the video characters are fictional, the story it conveys is all too common. For those who have been diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer or life-threatening illness, the patient’s first thought often centers on the financial resources they will need to finance the best medical care possible. But even with health benefits paying a portion of medical expenses, the cost associated with being out of work and paying for traditional or experimental forms of treatment are often staggering. That’s why it comes as no surprise that unpaid medical bills are now the leading cause of bankruptcies in the U. S. Faced with undergoing treatment while dealing with the stress associated with the cost of care, today patients with limited financial resources are exploring all possible options ranging from crowdfunding sites, to appeals on social media, to entering clinical trials. Still others who have had some degree of success with fundraising are researching alternatives to crowdfunding due to the fees, which can range from 5-20% per donation. But what many consumers may not realize is that their life insurance policy could be a valuable cash resource to help cancer patients finance medical care. Through a transaction known as a “life settlement” (or a “viatical settlement” for patients with a life expectancy of less than 24 months), a policy owner who qualifies has the ability to sell the policy to an institutional funder operating in the secondary market for life insurance. Founded in 2004, Abacus Settlements, LLC is a licensed life settlement provider with locations in New York and Tennessee. An active member of the Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA), Abacus works with professional advisors and consumers in optimizing the value of their life insurance policies. Abacus Settlements provides an online pricing tool to help policyholders obtain an estimate of the value of their life insurance asset. How to Cope with Cancer As a Family|financial assistance for cancer patients Receiving a cancer diagnosis is not only tough on the patient, but the family, as well. Although the person with cancer likely doesn’t want the family members to bear any burdens because of their illness or experience unwanted changes, they likely will. But by managing your emotions after learning the news, adjusting to the changes, and accepting help in positive and useful ways, you can get through this as a family. When your friends offer to cut the grass for you or carpool the children around, let them. Accepting help may hurt your pride initially, but you’ll likely find that it’s extremely helpful in the long run. Also, don’t feel like you are putting your family and friends out by asking for help—they are probably more than happy to contribute to your family. If you need help but don’t have anyone who is offering, look online for handyman services or someone who will provide assistance in whatever you need help with. Hearing the words, "You've got cancer." can be devastating. Patients often worry not just about the fight ahead, but how they're going to pay their mortgage and other bills. A veteran nurse, Kimberly Carrigg of Tallapoosa, Georgia is now adjusting to life as a patient. The 48-year old was diagnosed with breast cancer August 5th, the day after she had a biopsy. "I said, 'Oh, my gosh. I don't know what I'm going to do,’ says Carrigg. “I was already out of work," When Carrigg talked to her physician at Piedmont Cancer Center in Atlanta, the doctor contacted Emily Birckhead, an oncology social worker at the center, who quickly called Carrigg, knowing she was probably feeling overwhelmed. "Normally with a cancer diagnosis, they're reeling from that,” says Birckhead. “And then, afterward, it's this distress of, 'How am I going to pay for this?’" Carrigg, who is the primary breadwinner in her home and was already battling Graves Disease, is facing 7-more weeks of chemotherapy, then surgery, and then radiation. So, her bills will be substantial. "On average, I would say, it could cost someone $16,000 to $18,000 a year for cancer costs.,” says Birckhead. If you're facing a major diagnosis, Birckhead says, sit down and think about what kind of help you need most, right now. "Some of those initial issues like paying the mortgage, there are some organizations that can help you with that,” she says. “Or, covering your rent for a month, maybe. Just to help you get through." By Googling "patient assistance programs," you can find non-profits like Cancer Care, which offers help with transportation, child care and home assistance to patients in treatment who meet certain income requirements. The Cancer Financial Assistance Coalition's website lists 15 non-profits that might be able to help, Some serve patients with cancer, some focus on other illnesses. If you're having trouble pay for medication, meeting your insurance deductible, or paying your monthly premium, you may qualify for help. Birckhead says it may also be helpful to reach out to community organizations like your faith community, or your cancer treatment hospital, to see if they have patient assistance programs. "I have had patients use Go Fund Me, and get a lot of help there,” she says. “Sometimes it's difficult to talk to your friends and family about getting assistance. But having a friend set that up for you can really help." Kimberly Carrigg is grateful for Piedmont's help, so she can focus on what's really important: her health. To find out more about patient assistance programs, visit the Cancer Financial Assistance Coalition’s website cancerfac.org.

Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA), a registered charitable non-governmental organisation (NGO), was started in 1969, mainly to provide financial assistance to needy cancer patients. Over the last 43 years the organisation has expanded its mission to address the root cause of the exponential increase in cancer cases in India, namely that of lack of information. CPAA complements the work being done by medical practitioners and cancer hospitals. Today, CPAA has offices in Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune, and draws its entire annual budget from corporate and individual donations. CPAA's main aim is to: • Spread awareness on the dangers inherent in accepted social practices such as chewing of tobacco, early marriage and multiple pregnancies, which are responsible for approximately 70% of cancers in India. • Initiate steps for the early detection of cancer, since treatment at this stage leads to a cure in a majority of cases. • Provide complete assistance to cancer patients beyond that given by the medical profession, taking a holistic approach that CPAA calls the 'Total Management' philosophy.

Breast cancer survivor Kris West doesn’t dwell on her diagnosis and daily battle with cancer. Instead she spreads a message to stay positive and active. “My cancer is stage 4,” says Kris. “It’s treatable, but not curable.” Doctors diagnosed Kris with stage 4 breast cancer in 2013. “It metastasized and was in my lymph nodes and bones from head to toe,” explains Kris. The Maple Grove mother of three began treatment and has found success living with cancer. “It’s always there, in the back of your mind,” says Kris. “But you try to be normal.” Kris is still often in pain and the medicines she uses sometimes cause other complications. She twisted her foot and ankle nine months ago and the bones have had difficulty healing. She’s still not putting weight on her foot and finds the immobility hampers her active lifestyle. Kris West will be keynote speaker at Hope in Motion 5K One of the most remarkable qualities of Kris West is that she’s a voice of encouragement. The first year of Hope in Motion 5K and Family Walk, she volunteered to share her story as a survivor. On the fifth anniversary of Hope in Motion, Kris will be the keynote speaker. “It’s been a god thing to be a part of and I really enjoy it,” says Kris. “It’s cancer survivor day and all the money goes back to cancer patients.” Minnesota Oncology presents Hope in Motion to celebrate survivors of all types of cancer. The signature event raises money for the Angel Foundation, a nonprofit that provides adults in active cancer treatment and their families with financial assistance to pay for non-medical expenses such as rent, mortgage, utilities and phone bills. This year, the Hope in Motion 5k and Family Walk will be Sunday, June 3 at Lake Phalen Regional Park in St. Paul.
