Everything around them is still there, dealing with sudden loss | Marieke Poelmann | TEDxUtrecht
In 2010 Marieke Poelmann, 22 at the time, suddenly lost her parents as a result of a plane crash. It took her several years to see that bad things in life do not necessarily have to define you. In her talk she discusses her loss and how she learned to cope with it, and as a result came out a stronger person. Marieke Poelmann wrote a book about losing her parents in the airplane crash in Tripoli in 2010. “It took me several years to see that bad things in life don't necessarily define you as a person. When I suddenly lost both of my parents at 22, I thought my life was over too. Finally, I realized that there is one part of them I could never loose: the part that is in me. Slowly I got back onto my own two feet, gained strength and became an adult. In this process, against all my expectations, good things started happening again. I got to be who I wanted to be. It brought me far beyond anything I had ever imagined.” Poelmann is a writer and a freelance journalist. She studied Media and Journalism at the University of Amsterdam and worked as a producer for the Dutch news and current affairs program ‘Nieuwsuur’ in New York. Currently she is writing her second book, a fiction novel. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Why You Shouldn't Mourn The Death Of A Loved One | Neale Donald Walsch
This video can alter your entire experience of a loved one departing their physical expression. In this video, Neale Donald Walsch explain that you don’t have to mourn death because death isn’t real. Learn more with Neale's free Masterclass here: http://go.mindvalley.com/vuhORK8Z Death is a fiction, it doesn’t exist. Death cannot occur in the experience of who you are — your soul, which lives far past the end of what you call your physical life. Would you be sad about falling down stairs that you never actually fell down? No. Then, why would be sad about a loved one’s death if that, also, never actually happened? We may mourn our own loss, but it doesn’t make sense to mourn their death. They wouldn’t want you to mourn their death. Rather, they would hope that you may celebrate their “Continuation Day,” the love and joy they expressed in physical form, and that they are now continuing to live in the free and wondrous expression of their evolutionary process. In this video, Neale Donald Walsch explains all of this seeming impossibility, and shares some of the last words and sentiment of his mother. Those words were, “Dance on my grave, promise me.” Neale did just that. When you’re fully awake, you dance through the moments that you once mourned… And you mourn no more. IMPORTANT TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 What death actually is 00:51 Fear of your own death 01:55 Death does not exist-according to most religion 03:33 Story of Neale Donald’s Mom DIVE DEEPER: Do you enjoy Neale’s teaching? Nurse Shares 30 Years Of Spiritual Experiences With Death & Dying
Becki appreciates all the wonderful comments that her Sedona talk has generated. She writes: "Thank you for your precious comments! I'd love to respond to you. It is a joy to share my patients stories." If you would like to contact Becki about her video, her book, and/or speaking engagements, you can reach her here: beckilhawkins@gmail.com Becki also writes: "Many are asking me about my comment that I don't believe in hell. Let me clarify that. I don't believe in the hell that I heard about as a child; the terrible place that an angry God sends bad people. I think our experiences (in this world and the next) are based on how we live our lives, whether we've lived lives of love or non-loving. I choose to focus on loving God/Spirit/Jesus/All That Is and loving others. Those who have had hellish NDEs do come back 'changed' and seek to be more loving people. So it really is all about the Love. To learn more about this important topic, I encourage you to visit a resource page on NHNE Pulse called 'NDEs & Hell' " http://nhne-pulse.org/ndes-hell/ -- In Love and Light, Becki ................... Becki Hawkins, a hospice nurse and a chaplain, is the author of "Transitions: A Nurse's Education About Life And Death". She sat by the bedside of seriously ill and terminally ill patients for more than 30 years as an oncology and hospice nurse. During that time, she listened to patients describe various kinds of spiritual experiences, including near-death experiences. Becki shared some of her stories, including the lessons she learned from them, on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 with a small group of people that gathered at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Sedona, Arizona. Becki's presentation was co-sponored by NewHeaveNewEarth (NHNE) and The Mustard Seed Venture. Her presentation was part of an ongoing series of classes taught by David Sunfellow on near-death experiences. Penmanship Episode 27: Cory Taylor (June 2016)
Episode 27 of Penmanship, a podcast about Australian writing culture hosted by Andrew McMillen. Cory Taylor is an author and screenwriter. In May 2016, she published a book named 'Dying: A Memoir'. As the title suggests, it will her last public writing, for Cory is dying of melanoma-related brain cancer. Structured around three essays, Cory writes of how her body has failed her since the initial diagnosis in 2005, just before her 50th birthday. While her once full life has since contracted to just two rooms – her bedroom and her living room, where she spends most of her days now – her mind remains sharp and active, and in the book she describes the arc of her narrative with vivid detail. She writes: "When you're dying, even your unhappiest memories can induce a sort of fondness, as if delight is not confined to the good times, but is woven through your days like a skein of gold thread". At once sad and proud, her writing in these pages is truly masterly. Readers of any age will find much to learn here, and it is difficult to imagine a finer note on which to close. Cory and I live on the same street in inner-city Brisbane – Montague Road in West End – and I met her for the first time on a rainy Wednesday morning in mid June. She was propped up on the day bed in her living room, and in between occasional interruptions from friends and carers, Cory kindly allowed me to ask her a few questions about her life as a writer. There's a bit of ambient noise in the background of the recording, as traffic rushes past on the wet street outside. But the living room itself is a wonderful sanctuary of art and literature, and despite the fact that her body is wasting away, Cory's love for words and language burns brightly. Our conversation touches on how she decided to write about her impending death; the hardest parts of writing about dying; her early experiences working as a freelance screenwriter in the 1980s; how her PhD research into the internment of Japanese immigrants during the Second World War led to her second novel, and what she aimed to achieve by writing her final book. Cory Taylor is an award-winning screenwriter who has also published short fiction and children’s books. Her first novel, 'Me and Mr Booker', won the Commonwealth Writers Prize (Pacific Region) and her second, 'My Beautiful Enemy', was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award. Her most recent book is 'Dying: A Memoir'. First educated as a physicist, he later worked with George Lincoln Rockwell, the founder of the American Nazi Party. Pierce became well known as the author of a novel, The Turner Diaries (1978), written under the pseudonym Andrew Macdonald. He founded the religion of Cosmotheism, an admixture of panentheism, and promoted White nationalism, and White survival world-views. William Pierce was born on September 11, 1933 in Atlanta, Georgia. His father William L. Pierce II was born in Christiansburg, Virginia in 1892. His mother Marguerite Farrell was born in Richland, Georgia in 1910. Her family were part of the aristocracy of the Old South, descendants of Thomas Hill Watts, the Governor of Alabama and Attorney General of the Confederate States of America. Pierce’s father was an artillery officer in World War I. After the war he served as a government representative on ocean-going cargo ships and sent reports back to Washington, D.C. His father started an insurance agency and moved the family to Norfolk, Virginia when he was four. In 1942, the senior Pierce died suddendly when he was struck by a car after stepping from a street car. After his father’s death the family, which included his younger brother Sanders Pierce, moved to Montgomery, Alabama and then to Dallas, Texas. William Pierce did well in school, skipping one grade. His last two years in high school were spent at Allen Military Academy in Bryan, Texas. As a teenager his hobbies and interests were model rockets, chemistry, radios, electronics and reading science fiction. After finishing military school in 1951, Pierce worked briefly in an oil field as a roustabout. He injured himself when a four inch pipe fell on his hand and spent the rest of that summer working as a shoe salesman. Pierce earned a scholarship to attend Rice Institute (later renamed Rice University) in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Rice Institute in 1955 with a bachelors degree in physics. He took an interest in aviation and obtained a private pilot's license in August 1958.He had hopes of one day becoming an astronaut. He worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory for a few months before attending graduate school, first at Caltech and then the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1962. He taught physics as an assistant professor at Oregon State University from 1962 to 1965. From July 1965 to June 1966 Pierce was employed as Senior Researcher Associate Physicist for the aircraft division of Pratt and Whitney in New Haven, Connecticut. Pierce spent his final years living in West Virginia, where he hosted a weekly radio show, American Dissident Voices and oversaw his publishing, National Vanguard magazine, Free Speech and Resistance as well as books published by his book publishing firm National Vanguard Books, Inc and his record company, Resistance Records. Before Pierce died he allowed professor Robert S. Griffin to live with him for a month with the result being Pierce's biography : The Fame of a Dead Man’s Deeds (2001). William Hope Hodgson - The Boats Of The Glen Carrig, chapter 2; The Ship In The Creek
William Hope Hodgson (November 15, 1877 – April 1918) was an English author. He produced a large body of work, consisting of essays, short fiction, and novels, spanning several overlapping genres including horror, fantastic fiction, and science fiction. Hodgson used his experiences at sea to lend authentic detail to his short horror stories, many of which are set on the ocean, including his series of linked tales forming the "Sargasso Sea Stories". His novels, such as The House on the Borderland (1908) and The Night Land (1912), feature more cosmic themes, but several of his novels also focus on horrors associated with the sea. Early in his writing career Hodgson dedicated effort to poetry, although few of his poems were published during his lifetime. He also attracted some notice as a photographer and achieved renown as a bodybuilder. He died in World War I at age 40. Hodgson was born in Blackmore End, Essex, the son of Samuel Hodgson, an Anglican priest, and Lissie Sarah Brown. He was the second of 12 children, three of whom died in infancy. The death of a child is a theme in several of Hodgson's works including the short stories "The Valley of Lost Children", "The Sea-Horses", and "The Searcher of the End House". Hodgson's father was moved frequently and served 11 different parishes in 21 years, including one in County Galway, Ireland. This setting was later featured in Hodgson's novel The House on the Borderland. Hodgson ran away from his boarding school at age 13, in an effort to become a sailor. He was caught and returned to his family, but eventually received his father's permission to be apprenticed as a cabin boy and began a four-year apprenticeship in 1891. Hodgson's father died shortly thereafter, of throat cancer, leaving the family impoverished; while William was away, the family subsisted largely on charity. After his apprenticeship ended in 1895, Hodgson began two years of study in Liverpool and was then able to pass the tests and receive his mate's certificate; he then began several more years as a sailor. At sea, Hodgson experienced bullying. This led him to begin a program of personal training. According to Sam Moskowitz,[2] The primary motivation of his body development was not health, but self-defence. His relatively short height and sensitive, almost beautiful face made him an irresistible target for bullying seamen. When they moved in to pulverize him, they would learn too late that they had come to grips with easily one of the most powerful men, pound for pound, in all England. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Life and Death are Not Different | Sadhguru
For one who is aware, life and death are not separate occurrences – rather, Sadhguru explains, they exist in every breath and every moment. Those who do not embrace death will never know life. Sadhguru Talks @ In the Lap of the Master Sathsang, Isha Yoga Center, Coimbatore, Apr 2009 **************************************** Transcript: http://isha.sadhguru.org/blog/video/life-and-death-are-not-different/ Sadhguru: Death is not something that happens to you sometime in future. It's happening to you all the time. If you are unaware, you are ignorant it comes to you sometime; you do not know when but it’ll come. If you are aware in every moment both life and death are involved. If you as much as breathe little more consciously you will notice with every inhalation there is life, with every exhalation there is death. If you are not getting the point just do the next inhalation and do not… next exhalation and do not take the next inhalation you will get the point. Every moment, even beyond the breath, every moment it is happening. It's like the ticking of the clock life and death, life and death, life and death. It's all the time happening. One who is aware of this will naturally become aware there is no such thing as life and death. Life is death; and death is life; they are not different. It is only a question of the womb, the crawling out, growing up, taking the loan from the planet and putting it back but it's just life or it's just death. We need not have invented two words for this. It’s just one thing. We can call it ‘Da-life’ (Laughs) because they are not two different things. It is out of a very gross sense of unawareness about the life process… because the wonderful gifts that have been showered upon humanity we are using them like toys; it feels this way. This mind, this brain capable of incredible things but we are using it like a toy I think people enjoy toys, isn't it? (Laughs) A large percentage of humanity is so suffering the mind that slowly it has become fashionable to teach you to become no mind. Took millions of years to evolve to this state of mental capability; now we are talking about no mind because a no mind is better than a crazy mind, but a conscious mind is a fabulous thing. Why would anybody want to give this up - because they do not know how to handle it? If you knew how to handle it… if you knew how to handle it you wouldn’t want to get rid of this. People are seeking peace. I don't know if you walk straight on this pathway through the school and beyond there we have some very peaceful creatures. Did you see them? You didn’t see the ashram cows? No? Please go, you must see them. They are really peaceful, especially at this time of the day they are mulching (munching?)what they ate through the day and… (Gestures) very peaceful; more peaceful than lot of saints. Just a full stomach - so much peace. Just grass; see this is all you have to do (Laughs) because not much of a mind; even to create turmoil you need a mind, (isn't) with certain capability? So this mind has become a problem only because of so many silly assumptions we have made about life. So many kinds of camouflages we have put on life not seeing it just the way it is. All kinds of inventions about it; too many philosophies; too many ideologies… oh I am going too far. Lot of people are just living by some silly slogan that they read somewhere. This happened in an African village. There was a man eating lion bothering a certain village; grabbing men, women and children off and on and having… making breakfast of them or dinner. So they did not know how to deal with this lion because it was a very ferocious animal. So they called the big time celebrated hunter from Zimbabwe; his name was Kola Mandell (spelling unsure) Smite. Kola Mandell Smite is a big man, carried a big gun and (he) is a big game hunter; big on all things. So they invited him for a grea…big fee. He came; he walked around the village for three days, the lion didn’t turn up. He had other contracts, so he said, ‘My time, precious time is going away. So let me do one thing. Bring one of your cows here.’.. Vintage Vlog: When Breath Becomes Air (+ Tears Tag)
Each week I try to tell you about the one book that's really grabbed me that week but this week I'm talking about a book that will surely be one of the books of the year. Paul Kalanithi's memoir about his journey after being dignosed with terminal lung cancer is not only beautifully written, doesn't just contain a literary sensibility to make the most discerning reader happy, but will make you laugh and cry and think as you read, and won't leave you alone once you finish the final page. A must-read. Hear Lucy Kalanithi on the latest Vintage Podcast: https://soundcloud.com/vintagebookspodcast/february-podcast-love-with-louis-de-bernieres-lucy-kalanithi-and-anna-jean-hughes Watch Lucy Kalanithi in conversation with Stephen Grosz: Read an extract from the book: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/health/the-neurosurgeon-who-turned-his-fight-with-terminal-cancer-into/ https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/1109814/when-breath-becomes-air/ Consider yourselves tagged: Sanne: https://www.youtube.com/user/booksandquills Leena: https://www.youtube.com/user/jsutkissmyfrog Jen: https://www.youtube.com/user/jenvcampbell Jean: https://www.youtube.com/user/BookishThoughts Lauren: https://www.youtube.com/user/readsanddaydreams Anna: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXGj9JGOehYaTUY7bwyj_xQ When Breath Becomes Air At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, the next he was a patient struggling to live. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi’s transformation from a medical student asking what makes a virtuous and meaningful life into a neurosurgeon working in the core of human identity – the brain – and finally into a patient and a new father. What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when when life is catastrophically interrupted? What does it mean to have a child as your own life fades away? Paul Kalanithi died while working on this profoundly moving book, yet his words live on as a guide to us all. When Breath Becomes Air is a life-affirming reflection on facing our mortality and on the relationship between doctor and patient, from a gifted writer who became both. A song about all the wonderful things that Australia has to offer. FULL CREDITS BELOW: Written and Performed by Christiaan Van Vuuren. Animated by Connor Van Vuuren. Recorded and Mixed by Alex Mills at Song Zu. Backing Track is 'Payday' by Jason Farnham: https://youtu.be/-96SMUqYA1k FULL LYRICS BELOW: VERSE 1: In Australia we've got deadly animals a plenty. We've got funnel web spiders who'll murder you and your family. Under every second rock is a red back spider. And they’ll kill ya just cause, I dunno, they're bored or whatever. We got invisible brown snakes who'll bite you on the foot, And you’ll be dead in seven minutes, like that, kaput. We've got the world's deadliest creatures all over the place. We've got magpies who'll steal the eyeballs from your face - But at least we don't have AR-15's. VERSE 2: We've got great white sharks who'll ascend from the deep, And rip ya in half with their razor sharp teeth. We've got salt water crocs who'll death-roll you to death, and sea-snakes who'll gladly snatch your last breath.  We've got a blue ringed octopus no bigger than this, that just sits around in rock pools waiting to kill kids. And even the platypus, a cute beaver-duck thing, has got a spur on it’s ankle that’ll kill ya in one sting.  But at least we don't have AR-15's. And at least they can't end up in the hands of psychopathic teens. VERSE 3: We've got stonefish and stingrays and sea-urchins and shit, and hectic fucken homicidal box jellyfish, and these Jellyfish they aren’t even sentient beings, they don’t even really do stuff or know about things.  They just float around on the whim of the currents, being pointless non-cognitive murderous cunts. And if that weren't enough in terms of natural hazards, here in Australia the sun causes cancer. But at least we don't have AR-15's. And at least they can't end up in the hands of suicidal teens. And at least we don't have an NRA, who pay millions of dollars every day, buying off politicians not to change old laws. VERSE 4: We got bull sharks, cone shells, salt water crocodiles. Honey bees, european wasps, and blue ringed octopi's. Death adders, blue bottles, red back spiders. Tiger sharks, tiger snakes, and lizards that'll bite ya.  We got Sea snakes, taipans, cassowaries, copperheads, all the creatures of the land and sky and sea that want you dead. Toadfish, stonefish, irukandgi jellyfish - Bull ants, centipedes, and ticks that cause paralysis.  But thank fuck we don't have AR-15's. And thank fuck they can't end up in the hands psychopathic suicidal teens. And thank fuck we don't have an NRA, who pay millions of dollars every day, buying off politicians not to change some law.  A law that was written 200 years ago, in a time when it took three minutes to reload, a single round of ammunition, and we knew nothing about depression, and you couldn't fire 45 rounds in sixty seconds. And there wasn't even such a thing as automatic weapons. And there weren't thirty one mass-shootings monthly… but what would I know cause I'm from another country.

George Saunders" "Tenth of December" | Talks at Google
You can find more about George Saunders on Google Play: http://goo.gl/uLtQV One of the most important and blazingly original writers of his generation, George Saunders is an undisputed master of the short story, and Tenth of December is his most honest, accessible, and moving collection yet. In the taut opener, "Victory Lap," a boy witnesses the attempted abduction of the girl next door and is faced with a harrowing choice: Does he ignore what he sees, or override years of smothering advice from his parents and act? In "Home," a combat-damaged soldier moves back in with his mother and struggles to reconcile the world he left with the one to which he has returned. And in the title story, a stunning meditation on imagination, memory, and loss, a middle-aged cancer patient walks into the woods to commit suicide, only to encounter a troubled young boy who, over the course of a fateful morning, gives the dying man a final chance to recall who he really is. A hapless, deluded owner of an antiques store; two mothers struggling to do the right thing; a teenage girl whose idealism is challenged by a brutal brush with reality; a man tormented by a series of pharmaceutical experiments that force him to lust, to love, to kill—the unforgettable characters that populate the pages of Tenth of December are vividly and lovingly infused with Saunders's signature blend of exuberant prose, deep humanity, and stylistic innovation. Writing brilliantly and profoundly about class, sex, love, loss, work, despair, and war, Saunders cuts to the core of the contemporary experience. These stories take on the big questions and explore the fault lines of our own morality, delving into the questions of what makes us good and what makes us human. Unsettling, insightful, and hilarious, the stories in Tenth of December—through their manic energy, their focus on what is redeemable in human beings, and their generosity of spirit—not only entertain and delight; they fulfill Chekhov's dictum that art should "prepare us for tenderness." Advance praise for Tenth of December: "Tenth of December shows George Saunders at his most subversive, hilarious, and emotionally piercing. Few writers can encompass that range of adjectives, but Saunders is a true original—restlessly inventive, yet deeply humane."—Jennifer Egan, Pulitzer Prize--winning author of A Visit from the Goon Squad "George Saunders is a complete original, unlike anyone else, thank god—and yet still he manages to be the rightful heir to three other complete American originals—Barthelme (the lyricism, the playfulness), Vonnegut (the outrage, the wit, the scope), and Twain (the common sense, the exasperation). There is no author I recommend to people more often—for ten years I've urged George Saunders onto everyone and everyone. You want funny? Saunders is your man. You want emotional heft? Saunders again. You want stories that are actually about something—stories that again and again get to the meat of matters of life and death and justice and country? Saunders. There is no one better, no one more essential to our national sense of self and sanity."—Dave Eggers, author of A Hologram for the King About the Author: George Saunders is a New York Times bestselling American writer of short stories, essays, novellas and children's books. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper's, McSweeney's and GQ, among other publications. He also contributed a weekly column, American Psyche, to the weekend magazine of The Guardian's Saturday edition until October 2008. A professor at Syracuse University, Saunders won the National Magazine Award for fiction in 1994, 1996, 2000, and 2004, and second prize in the O. Henry Awards in 1997. His first story collection,CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, was a finalist for the 1996 PEN/Hemingway Award. In 2006 Saunders received a MacArthur Fellowship. In 2006 he won the World Fantasy Award for his short story "CommComm". His story collection In Persuasion Nation was a finalist for The Story Prize in 2007. --Wikipedia

Book Trailer for Benny's Hat by Juliet Clare Bell and Dave Gray
Benny's Hat (by Juliet Clare Bell and Dave Gray) is a picture book about sibling bereavement. It follows the fictional story of Friz, whose big brother gets sick and then dies. For more information, please go to www.pomelopip.com Buy the book from www.pomelopip.com (or gift a copy if you would like to), Amazon or selected bookshops (see website for details). "Somehow [they] have managed an impossible feat... and made a book that conveys all the pain, all the terrible grief of losing a child and yet offers comfort to the sibling(s) left behind. With a powerfully simple text and heartbreakingly lovely illustrations, this book is a small masterpiece of honesty and comfort for the darkest of times" Debi Gliori (Author and illustrator of international best-selling 'No Matter What') "Benny's Hat deals so quietly... with a huge subject of a sibling dying from the view point of the sister. It beautifully explains how children and young people might deal with serious illness and death differently to adults. The story gives adult readers examples of how to support children when a sibling is not expected to live not just via the notes at the back of the book but also by watching Friz’s parents’ reactions to her behaviour. I think this book will be extremely helpful for me in supporting families, children and young people through pre and post-bereavement" Jackie Grant, Bereavement Support Practitioner, Child Bereavement UK. "Picture books can have such power... and this one is exceptional. Sensitive, understated, compassionate and comforting, Juliet Clare Bell’s words and Dave Gray’s pictures tell the story of a little girl whose brother dies of cancer. I cried as I read, but I know this is an important book, an essential book for any child struggling in such a situation, or with grief in general. It is absolutely beautiful" Cathy Cassidy (best selling author). "The book and superb illustrations work on many levels breaking taboos yet without imposing anything on its readership. Instead this book thoughtfully and gently provides a vehicle to allow discussion and shared grief in a way younger children may participate and understand" Alan Kessedjian, Consultant Clinical Psychologist. "Silence and euphemism surround the topic of dying in our society and when it comes to the terminal illness of a child this is especially true. But this new children's picture book, Benny's Hat, tackles the devastation of debilitation and loss within a family from the sibling's perspective. This is, as so many others are attesting, a much-needed resource for those with similar experiences. It is also a fearless depiction of a tragic everyday that provides a much-needed addition to the tales we share of life and love. Congratulations, and gratitude, to the book's author Clare Juliet Clare Bell and its illustrator Dave Gray" Michele Aaron , author of 'Death and the Moving Image' "…such a lovely, touching story taking on a difficult subject whilst capturing the innocence and light-heartedness of childhood …a really useful book for all primary schools" Beki Stoiber, Primary school Special Educational Needs Coordinator

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder impacts you, but you don’t know it | Nora Boesem | TEDxRapidCity
As a foster mother to children with FASD, Nora Boesem has seen the effects of alcohol first hand. However, FASD often goes undiagnosed and is creating a burden on us all. Nora Boesem and her husband began fostering in 2011 and have fostered over 100 children for the state of SD and the Oglala Lakota Sioux Tribe. Nora realized there was no help for families and founded Roots to Wings in 2008, a non-profit to help advocate and support people living with FASD. In 2008 she also started a parenting group with the support of BMS in Rapid City, SD that still runs today and has now expanded into a beginners group and an advanced parenting group. In 2009 she was appointed to the Governor’s mental health board, joined the Chiesman Center for FASD and began speaking around the state of SD and around the US. Returning to school she earned her BS in psychology and is currently in her last year of her MSW at Arizona State University. In 2014 Nora joined BMS in a program she spearheads called Facing FASD. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Poul William Anderson - Inside Earth, chapter 8
Poul William Anderson (November 25, 1926 – July 31, 2001) was an American science fiction author who began his career during one of the Golden Ages of the genre and continued to write and remain popular into the 21st century. Anderson also authored several works of fantasy, historical novels, and a prodigious number of short stories. He received numerous awards for his writing, including seven Hugo Awards and three Nebula Awards. Poul Anderson was born on November 25, 1926, in Bristol, Pennsylvania, of Scandinavian parents. Shortly after his birth, his father, Anton Anderson, an engineer, moved the family to Texas, where they lived for over ten years. Following Anton Anderson's death, his widow took her children to Denmark. The family returned to the United States after the outbreak of World War II, settling eventually on a Minnesota farm. (The frame story of Three Hearts and Three Lions, before the fantasy part begins, is partly set in the pre-WWII Denmark which the young Anderson personally experienced.) While he was an undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota, Anderson's first stories were published by John W. Campbell in Astounding Science Fiction: "Tomorrow's Children" by Anderson and F. N. Waldrop in March 1947 and a sequel, "Chain of Logic" by Anderson alone, in July. He earned his B.A. in physics with honors but made no serious attempt to work as a physicist; instead he became a free-lance writer after his graduation in 1948—and placed his third story in the December Astounding. Anderson married Karen Kruse in 1953 and moved with her to the San Francisco Bay area. Their daughter Astrid (now married to science fiction author Greg Bear) was born in 1954. They made their home in Orinda, California. Over the years Poul gave many readings at The Other Change of Hobbit bookstore in Berkeley, and his wife later donated his typewriter and desk to the store. He died of cancer on July 31, 2001, after a month in the hospital. A few of his novels were first published posthumously. Anderson was a founding member of the Society for Creative Anachronism in 1966 and of the Swordsmen and Sorcerers' Guild of America, also in the mid-1960s. The latter was a loose-knit group of Heroic Fantasy authors led by Lin Carter, originally eight in number, with entry by credentials as a fantasy writer alone. He was the sixth President of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, taking office in 1972. Robert A. Heinlein dedicated his 1985 novel The Cat Who Walks Through Walls to Anderson and eight of the other members of the Citizens' Advisory Council on National Space Policy. How Evolution works
The mechanisms of evolution explained in one video. The theory of evolution explains how the enormous variety of life could come into existence. How it is possible for primitive life forms to spawn the millions of different creatures, that exist today. Unfortunately, evolution is often misunderstood, because it's mechanisms seem counter intuitive. By using visualizations, infographics and appealing characters, the viewer is more likely to understand it the complex information. More than that, by presenting the information in an entertaining way, the information is more likely to sink in. Short videos, explaining things. For example Evolution, the Universe, Stock Market or controversial topics like Fracking. Because we love science. Lynda Bellingham dies after cancer fight: tributes from Simon Pegg and Denise Welch
Actress and presenter Lynda Bellingham, who had been suffering from cancer, has died in her husband's arms. The 66-year-old star, best known for her long-running role as a mother in the Oxo TV adverts, had been battling colon cancer, which later spread to her lungs and liver, since being diagnosed in July last year. She died in the arms of her husband Michael in hospital on Sunday, her agent Sue Latimer said. The actress said she decided to end her treatment on August 13 to limit the amount of suffering her family would witness. In a statement on behalf of Bellingham's family, Latimer, said: "Lynda died peacefully in her husband's arms yesterday evening at a London hospital. "Her family, to whom she was devoted, would like to thank the nurses and staff for their tremendous care and support. Several tributes have been made to the actress and presenter. Actor and comedian Simon Pegg, who worked with Bellingham on the sitcom Faith in the Future tweeted: "Lynda Bellingham, a gorgeous, brassy, funny, generous, talented human being. My first TV mother figure and and a treasured friend.” Her former Loose Women colleague Denise Welch explained how she and several other panellists from the ITV show visited Bellingham at her home last week. "She got us chocolate cakes in, she was still the mother hen... it was quite obvious that she was very, very tired but none of us thought that the end was quite as close as it was. We were late getting to the house, we rang the intercom and she said: 'Bloody hell, a woman could die waiting for you lot!' "It was a room full of love, we laughed 'til we cried and we were all thrilled. Meanwhile Darren Bennett, who partnered Bellingham in the 2009 series of Strictly Come Dancing, said: ""We worked together for a short time on Strictly but she was a massive part of the show that year. It was an honour and a privilege to work with her. It was very nice to get to know her, she was a very, very nice lady, very professional." The actress openly discussed her decision to stop her cancer treatment earlier this year. Bellingham's decision to end her treatment was revealed in a newspaper serialisation of her forthcoming autobiography. She said: "The decision to give up chemo was a huge relief because I took back some control of myself. It's there on the table if I want it. I don't want the boys or my husband to see me die a little sad old lady. I want to go out there as I am." She said she wanted her autobiography to be "uplifting", adding: "I wrote the book for everybody out there. It's not supposed to be an embarrassing account of me having terminal cancer. "I wanted to write it for everybody who is given that curveball and say of course there are no answers but, if you can, take it and make it positive and talk about dying. If two people read this book and think 'Actually, that's how I feel and I'm not on my own', then I'll have done something half decent." Bellingham was born Meredith Lee Hughes in Montreal, Canada, in 1948. She was given up for adoption because she was born out of wedlock in a strictly religious family and raised in the village of Aston Abbotts in Buckinghamshire. She first became known to viewers in the Seventies daytime soap General Hospital and during that decade appeared in such films as Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers and Confessions of a Driving Instructor. But it was in the Eighties that she became a household name, thanks to the Oxo adverts and regular appearances in two long-running series - All Creatures Great and Small and Doctor Who. In the enduring science fiction show, Bellingham played the Inquisitor, a member of the High Council of Time Lords who was a key figure in the trial of the Doctor (then played by Colin Baker). Bellingham then found sitcom success in Second Thoughts, a series about two middle-aged divorcees (played by Bellingham and James Bolam) who tried to form a relationship despite constant interference from troublesome teenage children and ex-partners. Bellingham then went on to star in a successful sequel, Faith in the Future. She filmed a special farewell episode of Loose Women, which is yet to air, in which she received a standing ovation.

Dr. Spencer Johnson has died. His book "Who Moved My Cheese?" sold 25 million copies and became a business and self-help phenomenon. According to Johnson's executive assistant Nancy Casey he died Monday of complications from pancreatic cancer in the San Diego-area city of Encinitas. SAGE Book Store in Shelton Commercial
I love book stores, and loved doing this commercial. Sage book store has become a meeting place for book clubs, coffee drinkers and other folks who want to get dialed in to current opinion, taken away by fanciful fiction or maybe just a little bit of both. Running on the local cable, this spot is the second one I shot for this business and one of my favorite pieces I've ever made. The cup sequence at the beginning happened when I noticed that the logo on the cup would seem to appear when the drink was added, so I staged that thinking I would only use one little bit of it. The owner's husband is famous there for his self-styled closing to his furniture store commercials, so I felt it appropriate to add that in the middle. That's me on the VO for the rest of it. If you look carefully, I had a little fun juxtaposing the titles in the politics section. In the original spot, there was a mother with a small child in the kids' section, but was told later that she had died from cancer. I couldn't bring myself to re-shoot the scene with a different mom, so I leafed through books until I found one with a message I could apply to my remembrance. This spot is dedicated to her. William Hope Hodgson - The Boats Of The Glen Carrig, chapter 16; Freed
