Bromelain in Pineapples Helps in Cancer Treatment. HOW Pineapple Enzymes can KILL CANCER TUMORS & Save Your Life? Bromelain in Pineapples Kills Cancer Cells Without Harming You One such compound is bromelain, an enzyme that can be extracted from pineapple stems. Research published in the journal Planta Medica found that bromelain was superior to the chemotherapy drug 5-fluorauracil in treating cancer in an animal study.1 Researchers stated: "This antitumoral effect [of bromelain] was superior to that of 5-FU [5-fluorouracil], whose survival index was approximately 263 %, relative to the untreated control." What makes this impact particularly impressive is that the bromelain worked without causing additional harm to the animals. The chemo drug 5-fluorauracil, on the other hand, has a relatively unsuccessful and dangerous track record despite being used for nearly 40 years. As written by GreenMedInfo: "As a highly toxic, fluoride-bound form of the nucleic acid uracil, a normal component of RNA, the drug is supposed to work by tricking more rapidly dividing cells -- which include both cancer and healthy intestinal, hair follicle, and immune cells -- into taking it up, thereby inhibiting (read: poisoning) RNA replication enzymes and RNA synthesis.… When a person dies following conventional cancer treatment it is all too easy to "blame the victim" and simply write that patient's cancer off as "chemo-resistant," or "exceptionally aggressive," when in fact the non-selective nature of the chemotoxic agent is what ultimately lead to their death." Selective cytotoxicity is indeed a property that is only found among natural compounds; no chemotherapy drug yet developed is capable of this effect. Aside from bromelain, other examples of natural compounds that have been found to kill cancer cells without harming healthy cells include: • Vitamin C -- Dr. Ronald Hunninghake carried out a 15-year research project called RECNAC (cancer spelled backwards). His groundbreaking research in cell cultures showed that vitamin C was selectively cytotoxic against cancer cells. • Eggplant extract: Solasodine rhamnosyl glycosides (BEC), which is a fancy name for extracts from plants of the Solanaceae family, such as eggplant, tomato, potato, Bell peppers, and tobacco, also impact only cancerous cells leaving normal cells alone. Eggplant extract cream appears to be particularly useful in treating skin cancer. Dr. Bill E. Cham, a leading researcher in this area, explains: "The mode of action of SRGs [glycoalkaloids solasodine rhamnosy glycosides (BEC)] is unlike any current antineoplastic [anti-tumor] agent. Specific receptors for the SRGs present only on cancer cells but not normal cells are the first step of events that lead to apoptosis in cancer cells only, and this may explain why during treatment the cancer cells were being eliminated and normal cells were replacing the killed cancer cells with no scar tissue being formed." • Turmeric (Curcumin Extract): Of all the natural cancer fighters out there, this spice has been the most intensely researched for exhibiting selective cytotoxicity.2 Remarkably, in a 2011 study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, rats administered curcumin, the primary polyphenol in turmeric, saw a decrease in experimentally-induced brain tumors in 9 out of 11 treated, while noting that the curcumin did not affect the viability of brain cells "suggesting that curcumin selectively targets the transformed [cancerous] cells." How Enzymes Might Help Treat Cancer Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme (an enzyme that digests proteins). In the Planta Medica study, it was injected directly into the abdominal cavity. Getting enzymes from your digestive tract into your bloodstream isn't as easy as it would seem, as enzymes are very susceptible to denaturing and must be helped to survive the highly acidic environment in your stomach. They are often given an "enteric coating" to help them survive the journey through your digestive tract. And then, there is the matter of absorption. For nearly 100 years, medical dogma insisted that enzymes taken orally were too large to pass through the digestive tract wall. However, there is now a good deal of research that they can indeed pass through your intestine intact3 and into your bloodstream and lymphatic system, where they can deliver their services to the rest of your body... one of the mysteries of medical science. Now that we know this is possible, systemic oral enzymes have been used to treat problems ranging from sports injuries to arthritis to heart disease and cancer, particularly in European countries. But most of the research has been published in non-English language journals.

Quercetin, Cancer Killers - The Most Effective Supplements For Killing Cancer! Quercetin occurs naturally in a variety of brightly colored plant-based foods. This flavonoid compound has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may help lower the risk of cancer and heart disease while decreasing blood pressure. A diet that includes plenty of foods with a high content of quercetin will also be rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals and other antioxidant compounds. Stir in Capers According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, capers contain one of the highest natural concentrations of quercetin. Canned capers, which are the salt-brined flower buds of the Capparis spinosa plant, contain 173 milligrams of quercetin in every 3.5 ounces, or 14.8 milligrams in a typical 1-tablespoon serving. Use capers in salads, dips, pasta dishes and as a flavor-enhancing addition to sauces for seafood or poultry. Capers are high in sodium. To decrease their sodium content and control the saltiness they add to foods, rinse them thoroughly before using. Sprinkle on Onions All types of onions are high in quercetin. Raw red onions contain 33.4 milligrams of the compound in every 3.5 ounces, while raw white onions supply 21.4 milligrams, scallions have 18.3 milligrams and fresh sweet onions contain 14.8 milligrams. Cooked onions have 24.4 milligrams of the compound in each 3.5-ounce serving. To get the most quercetin out of your onions, use them promptly after purchase. Onions can lose more than 25 percent of their quercetin content if they're stored over a week. Fill Up on Fruit Fruits with a dark red or blue hue have the highest quercetin content. These include cranberries, which contain 15 milligrams in every 3.5 ounces; raw black plums, with 12.5 milligrams per serving; and blueberries, which have 5 milligrams. Chokeberries, black currants, apples and cherries are also good sources of quercetin. A 2002 article published in "Nutrition" reported that foods prepared by boiling lost a significant amount of quercetin due to contact with heat and water. Whenever possible, eat quercetin-rich fruits raw or only lightly cooked. Vary Your Veggies Raw hot green chile peppers have nearly 15 milligrams of quercetin in every 3.5 ounces. Red leaf lettuce contains 12 milligrams per serving, while raw kale has 7.7 milligrams and cooked asparagus 7.6 milligrams in a 3.5-ounce serving. Romaine lettuce, chicory greens, raw spinach, sweet peppers, snap beans and raw broccoli range in quercetin content from 2.4 to 5 milligrams contained in 3.5 ounces of the food. How Much Quercetin Do You Take for an Anti-inflammatory Response? Quercetin is a flavonoid antioxidant found in many fruits and vegetables. It serves a variety of important health effects and has been used successfully for its cholesterol-lowering, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory benefits. Aside from dietary sources, you can obtain quercetin in supplement form and it can often be found in formulas together with other anti-inflammatory compounds, such as bromelain, grape seed and green tea. Consult your physician before taking any supplement. COPD Quercetin prevented progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, COPD, in a study conducted at the Department of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases, University of Michigan. In the study, researchers gave laboratory animals 0.5 milligrams per day for 10 days and noted improved lung elasticity, decreased oxidation and decreased inflammation. Quercitin also decreased levels of tissue-damaging enzymes known as matrix metalloproteinases. The study was published in the September 2010 issue of the journal "Respiratory Research." Nitric Oxide Researchers at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Chungbuk National University, Korea, reported that quercetin doses of 10 milligrams per kilogram of body weight — which is a higher than normal for human use — produced anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory animals. Scientists administered the high dose of quercetin using a tube-feeding method called gavage once per day for three days, as a way to saturate the tissues. Quercetin exerted its effects, in part, by inhibiting nitric oxide production in white blood cells known as macrophages, reducing nitric oxide levels by half. The antioxidant also reduced the inflammatory response involving neutrophils, another type of white blood cell. Researchers concluded significant anti-inflammatory potential for quercetin in this preliminary animal study, published in the September 2008 issue of the "Journal of Veterinary Science." Prostate Inflammation Quercetin has been used to reduce inflammation in prostate conditons for its anti-inflammatory and anti-testosterone effects, according to Jeannette Potts, M.D., in her book "Genitourinary Pain and Inflammation: Diagnosis and Management." The antioxidant decreases levels of inflammatory prostaglandins and increases levels of prostatic endorphins — natural pain-relieving molecules.

If cells in our bodies are infected by viruses, or become cancerous, then killer cells of the immune system identify and destroy the affected cells. Cytotoxic T cells are very precise and efficient killers. They are able to destroy infected or cancerous cells, without destroying healthy cells surrounding them. The Wellcome Trust funded laboratory of Professor Gillian Griffiths, at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, investigates just how this is accomplished. By understanding how this works, we can develop ways to control killer cells. This will allow us to find ways to improve cancer therapies, and ameliorate autoimmune diseases caused when killer cells run amok and attack healthy cells in our bodies." Cytotoxic T cells are just 10 microns in length: approximately one-tenth the width of a human hair. These movies are 92 times real time. Neutrophils are a special group of white blood cells that play an extremely important role in protecting the body against infections. Mature neutrophils do not divide. New neutrophils are constantly formed in the bone marrow where they develop and mature. Mature neutrophils are released into the blood where they circulate for 3 to 12 hours and then move to other tissues, where they survive only 2 to 3 days. These mature neutrophils can be found in large and small blood vessels, as well as in the tiny capillaries in different tissues. In the bloodstream, neutrophils act as surveillance cells searching for infections. Neutrophils can sense a site of infection because of chemicals that are released by the bacteria. Upon detecting these chemicals, neutrophils slow down and begin to stick to the walls of the blood vessel. They then squeeze between the cells of the blood vessel wall and enter the infected tissue. Here, the neutrophils crawl towards the infection as they continue following the chemical signals. At the site of infection, bacteria are coated with antibodies of the immune system and marked for ingestion. The neutrophil recognizes the marked bacterium, engulfs it into its body, ... And traps the bacterium in a sac called a phagosome. The neutrophil contains pouches called lysosomes, which are full of digestive enzymes and chemicals that can kill bacteria. The pouches or lysosomes then combine with the phagosomes containing the bacteria and release the enzymes and chemicals, ... Resulting in the ultimate death of the bacterium inside the neutrophil. After killing and digesting the bacteria, the neutrophil is spent. Having completed its duty, the neutrophil shrinks in size and breaks up into smaller pieces that can be recognized and eaten by other cells.

The way in which the proteins in a cell transmit signals to one another is hugely important for controlling cell division, cell migration and even cell death. If this process goes wrong, it can lead to the onset of diseases such as cancer. This is the first part of a series of animations exploring cell signalling, this time focusing on kinases and phosphorylations. Within a cell, phosphorylations are a major way in which proteins can transmit chemical signals to one another. In this video, we're exploring what you need in order to perform a phosphorylation, how it works and what happens when proteins are phosphorylated. Below are some references of seminal papers in the field. Early sequence alignments of ~100 protein kinases showed remarkable conservation of particular amino acid motifs (1), and these same residues were found to be important to activity when scanning mutagenesis experiments tested activity after sequentially mutating kinase residues (2). While these conserved motifs are far apart in the amino acid sequence, the first structures of a kinase (3, 4) showed that they are all close to ATP and the substrate in three dimensional space. They may be damaged, stressed, or just plain old - this is normal, in fact it’s called programmed cell death. To make up for that loss, right now, inside your body, billions of cells are dividing, creating new cells. And cell division, also called mitosis, requires an army of tiny molecular machines.DNA is a good place to start - the double helix molecule that we always talk about. This is a scientifically accurate depiction of DNA. If you unwind the two strands you can see that each has a sugar phosphate backbone connected to the sequence of nucleic acid base pairs, known by the letters A,T,G, and C. Now the strands run in opposite directions, which is important when you go to copy DNA. Copying DNA is one of the first steps in cell division. Here the two strands of DNA are being unwound and separated by the tiny blue molecular machine called helicase. It literally spins as fast as a jet engine! The strand of DNA on the right has its complimentary strand assembled continuously but the other strand is more complicated because it runs in the opposite direction. So it must be looped out with its compliment strand assembled in reverse, section by section. At the end of this process you have two identical DNA molecules, each one a few centimeters long but just a couple nanometers wide. To prevent the DNA from becoming a tangled mess, it is wrapped around proteins called a histones, forming a nucleosome. These nucleosomes are bundled together into a fiber known as chromatin, which is further looped and coiled to form a chromosome, one of the largest molecular structures in your body. You can actually see chromosomes under a microscope in dividing cells - only then do they take on their characteristic shape. The process of dividing the cell takes around an hour in mammals. This footage is from a time lapse. You can see how the chromosomes line up on the equator of the cell. When everything is right they are pulled apart into the two new daughter cells, each one containing an identical copy of DNA. As simple as it looks, this process is incredibly complicated and requires even more fascinating molecular machines to accomplish it. Let’s look at a single chromosome. One chromosome consists of two sausage-shaped chromatids - containing the identical copies of DNA made earlier. Each chromatid is attached to microtubule fibers, which guide and help align them in the correct position. The microtubules are connected to the chromatid at the kinetochore, here colored red. The kinetochore consists of hundreds of proteins working together to achieve multiple objectives - it’s one of the most sophisticated molecular mechanisms inside your body. The kinetochore is central to the successful separation of the chromatids. It creates a dynamic connection between the chromosome and the microtubules. For a reason no one’s yet been able to figure out, the microtubules are constantly being built at one end and deconstructed at the other. While the chromosome is still getting ready, the kinetochore sends out a chemical stop signal to the rest of the cell, shown here by the red molecules, basically saying this chromosome is not yet ready to divide The kinetochore also mechanically senses tension. When the tension is just right and the position and attachment are correct all the proteins get ready, shown here by turning green. At this point the stop signal broadcasting system is not switched off. Instead it is literally carried away from the kinetochore down the microtubules by a dynein motor. This is really what it looks like. It has long ‘legs’ so it can avoid obstacles and step over the kinesins, molecular motors walking the other direction. Studio filming by Raquel Nuno

Therefore it is of paramount importance to develop new anti-cancer approaches to meet the humanitarian and economic challenges associated with our aging global population. One such approach is to target cancers that employ a particular mechanism to achieve cellular immortality - Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres, or "ALT". Every time a normal somatic cell divides, the DNA at the ends of its chromosomes, called telomeres, gets shorter. When the telomeres shorten too much, the cell permanently stops dividing and either enters senescence or undergoes apoptosis (programmed cell death). Telomere shortening thus acts as a biological mechanism for limiting cellular life span. Most cancer cells bypass this failsafe by synthesizing new telomeres using the enzyme telomerase. Several therapies targeting this well-described telomerase-based pathway are in the advanced stages of clinical development, but as with any cancer therapy there is the potential for development of resistance against telomerase-based strategies to defeat cancer. Studies using mice and human cancer cell lines have demonstrated that cancer can overcome the loss of telomerase by using a telomerase-independent mechanism called alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT). Furthermore, existing tumor cells in mice have also been observed to switch over to the ALT pathway as a result of telomerase-inhibiting treatment. It is therefore plausible that telomerase-dependent cancer treatments will introduce selective pressures in human tumors to activate the ALT pathway and/or select for cells already using ALT within the tumor. This makes the development of ALT-specific therapies imperative for the success of complete anti-cancer approaches. There are currently no ALT-targeted anti-cancer therapeutics, however, largely because this process is much less well understood. A key step towards the development of ALT-targeted cancer therapeutics and diagnostics was the discovery of the first ALT-specific molecule, the telomeric C-circle, by our collaborator, Dr. Jeremy Henson, back in 2009. C-circles are an unusual type of circular DNA sequences that are created from telomeres. The level of C-circles in cancer cells accurately reflects the level of ALT activity, and this biomarker can be found in the blood of patients who have bone cancers positive for ALT activity. The OncoSENS research team at the SENS Research Foundation, in collaboration with Dr. Jeremy Henson at the University of New South Wales in Australia, has developed a novel version of the C-circle assay that can be fully automated using robotic liquid handlers, making it now feasible to perform robust high-throughput screenings to search for chemical modulators of the ALT pathway. The goal of this project is to screen a library of about 115,000 compounds containing structurally diverse, medicinally active, and cell permeable drugs from a variety of fields of medicine (oncology, cardiology, and immunology, etc.), for inhibitors of the ALT pathway. The crucial advantage of making use of such drug libraries, which are richly documented and contain some FDA approved compounds, is that once hits are identified and validated using our ALT-specific assays they can potentially be repurposed for the treatment of patients with ALT cancers through cheaper, faster and safer preclinical and clinical validation protocols. About 17-thousand people are diagnosed with lung cancer in Korea every year,... 80 percent of them are fatal cases. Cancer cells travel through blood vessels and spread to other organs of the body, making it difficult to treat, especially among lung cancer patients. "Even if the patient receives an operation, there are cases where they fail to recover because of the spread. The patient needs to receive treatment that does not allow the cancer to spread." Korean researchers, for the first time, have found two key substances that are involved in the spread of cancer to other organs a particular protein that controls cell growth... and an enzyme that produces active oxygen. The researchers say these proteins and enzymes cause changes in cancer cells,... making them multiply in number,... causing them to spread. "We found that changes that occur in complex1 or p21 has an effect on the spread of cancer in patients. We hope to carry out strategic treatment that will be able to control the spread." On average, 66 percent of all cancer patients are able to survive five more years. However, if the cancer spreads,... the figure drops to 18-percent. One can not just learn about an oil in a book for example to truly understand and know an oil, and I even find others who say they are "Aromatherapist" who attended a weekend seminar to acquire this title, often do not truly know the oil. To know the oil you have to resonate in oneness with it, and feel the vibrations of it and learn how it interacts with your own personal vibrations, and how it can personally benefit you. Oils that are good for me to use combined, may not be suitable for others, bc each one of us is unique just like a snowflake is unique and we are all divinely blessed in different ways, So when you begin to learn about oils after the liver is detoxified, then you can learn to resonate with them better, as they will be more effective after the alkalinity, and intestinal flora, is balanced and the liver is flushed of toxins. These divine oils have the ability to in fact cross the blood brain barrier and can in fact work to regenerate and repair oxidated stress done at the cellular level, in my opinion. Question: Do you think the enzyme Telomerase could be used to reverse the aging process in our lifetime? (Submitted by Paul Cellura) Michio Kaku: Paul, Telomerase hit the headlines; however, I think we have to put it into perspective. It is not the fountain of youth; however, it is a significant breakthrough. We have to put it into a much larger perspective. First of all, we know that DNA is sort of like a shoelace. It has plastic tips at the end. Every time a cell reproduces, the tips get shorter and shorter and shorter until finally they fray. And you know that your shoelace, without the plastic tips will simply fall apart. That's what happens inside a cell. A cell, for example, your skin cell, will divide about 60 times, that's called a Hayflick Limit. Then the cell goes into senescence and eventually dies. So in some sense, every cell has a biological clock. It is doomed to die after about 60 reproductions. However, Telomerase can eliminate some of the contraction of the chromosomes and the chromosomes can maintain their length. So at first you may say, "ah-ha! We can now defeat the biological clock." But not so fast, first of all, cancer cells also use Telomerase. Cancer cells are immortal. Cancer cells are immortal and that's precisely why they kill you. Why are cancer cells so dangerous? Because they are immortal. They grow and they grow and they grow until they take over huge chunks of your body, meaning that your bodily functions cannot be performed and you die. So we have to make sure that when you hit ordinary cells with Telomerase that you don't also trigger cancer in the process. Now, also you have to realize that genes are also very essential for the aging process. It turns out that we know what aging is. Aging is the buildup of error. That's all aging is. The build up of genetic and cellular error. And cells begin to age; they begin to get sluggish because genetic mistakes start to build up. Now cells; however, have a repair mechanism. They can repair damage to their cells; otherwise we would all basically rot very soon after birth. However, even the repair mechanisms eventually get gummed up and then the cell really starts to get old as a consequence. So then the question is, can you accelerate cell repair? That is another branch of gerontology which is being looked at using genes and using chemicals to accelerate the repair mechanisms. For example, if I take any organism on the planet Earth from yeast cells to spiders, insects, rabbits, dogs, and even monkeys now. And I reduce their caloric intake by 30%, they live 30% longer. In fact the only organism which has not yet been deliberately tested by scientists are homo sapiens. All the other species obey this basic rule. You starve them to death, they live longer. This is independent of Telomerase. This is a function of the wear and tear that we have on the cells. And this is the only known way of actually deliberately extending the lifespan of any organisms almost at will. Now, what we want is a genetic way of mimicking this mechanism without having to starve yourself because how many people do you know would be willing to starve themselves in order to live 30% longer? Not too many. So then the question is, are there genes that control this process. And the answer is apparently, yes. There's something called the Sirtuin genes, Sir2 being the most prominent of them. They in turn stimulate certain enzymes, among them Resveratrol, which is found in red wine, for example. So this does not mean that drinking red wine or taking Telomerase is the fountain of youth. I don't think that anyone has the fountain of youth yet. What I am saying is, we are now finding pieces of the fountain of youth, tantalizing clues that mean that perhaps in the coming decades, we might be able to actually unravel the aging process. We don't have it yet. Don't go out to the drug store and stock up on these kinds of chemicals and enzymes thinking you're going to live forever. However it is conceivable that in the coming decades we'll come very close to finding it.

According to UPI, a diet that contains healthy doses of omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, could help control the growth and spread of breast cancer cells. The fatty acids stopped additional delayed tumors from forming and blocked cancerous cells from spreading to other organs in mice. The study's researchers emphasized that the new findings don't mean an omega-3 diet could prevent breast cancer tumors from forming altogether. Recently, researchers at the National Institutes of Health reported that variations in a gene for an enzyme involved in cell energy metabolism appear to increase the risk for prostate cancer. The genetic variations all impair the enzyme phosphodiesterase 11A (PDE11A), which helps regulate a cell's responses to hormones and other signals. Cancer breakthrough: CHILLIES can 'self-destruct' cancer cells - scientists discovery. Natural Compound, Capsaicin in HOT SAUCE Can KILL CANCER CELLS. Capsaicin, the active ingredient that gives chillies their bite, surrounds the deadly growths and makes them 'self-destruct', scientists have claimed. The research, from Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, found the eye-watering component can trigger certain defenses in the cell membranes that surround cancerous cells. Lead researcher Dr Lea Weber, was very enthusiastic about the findings. Commenting on the research in the journal Breast Cancer - Targets and Therapy, she said: "Capsaicin is capable of inducing cell death and inhibiting cancer cell growth in many different types of cancer. "For example, osteosarcoma, colon, and pancreatic cancer cells, while normal cells remain unharmed." According to scientists, the active tongue-tingling ingredient triggers a cell receptor known as TRPV1, which influences the substances cancer cells can feed on. In turn, the cancerous growth fights to battle it and eventually self-destructs. As they all self-destruct, the growth of the cancerous tumour is completely stunted. But before you go stocking up on chilies - there's a catch. Researchers say capsaicin isn't effective if eaten.. Instead it must be formulated into an oral tablet and form of a wider anti-cancer treatment, alongside other drugs that target the cells. Dr Weber explained: "In this study, we aimed to identify the TRP channels in different breast cancer subtypes and to investigate the effect of TRPV1 ligand (capsaicin) on breast cancer progression. "To our knowledge, no studies have yet conducted a large-scale comparative study of the TRP channels expression profiles in breast cancer cell lines. "In all our experiments, a significant reduction in cell proliferation after capsaicin stimulation was observed. "This finding was in accordance with the results of other scientists, who demonstrated a significant decrease in the cell growth rate of MCF-7 breast cancer cells upon capsaicin stimulation." When TRPV1 is switched on by capsaicin, the cancer cell is sent into overdrive and starts to self-destruct. As more and more cancer cells die, the tumour is stopped from growing larger. Dr Weber said: "In this study, we aimed to identify the TRP channels in different breast cancer subtypes and to investigate the effect of TRPV1 ligand [capsaicin] on breast cancer progression. (Note that the cyclins are now classified according to their conserved cyclin box structure, and not all these cyclins alter in level through the cell cycle.) The oscillations of the cyclins, namely fluctuations in cyclin gene expression and destruction by the ubiquitin mediated proteasome pathway, induce oscillations in Cdk activity to drive the cell cycle. A cyclin forms a complex with Cdk, which begins to activate the Cdk, but the complete activation requires phosphorylation, as well. Complex formation results in activation of the Cdk active site. Cyclins themselves have no enzymatic activity but have binding sites for some substrates and target the Cdks to specific subcellular locations. They were discovered by R. Timothy Hunt in 1982 while studying the cell cycle of sea urchins. In an interview for the BBC4 documentary "The Life Scientific" (aired on 13/12/2011) hosted by Jim Al-Khalili, R. Timothy Hunt explained that the name "cyclin" was originally named after his hobby cycling. It was only after the naming did its importance in the cell cycle become apparent. As it was appropriate the name stuck. R.Timothy Hunt: "By the way the name cyclin, which I coined, was really a joke, it's because I like cycling so much at the time but they did come and go in the cell..."  Cyclins, when bound with the dependent kinases, such as the p34 (cdc2) or cdk1 proteins, form the maturation-promoting factor. MPFs activate other proteins through phosphorylation. These phosphorylated proteins, in turn, are responsible for specific events during cycle division such as microtubule formation and chromatin remodeling. Cyclins can be divided into four classes based on their behavior in the cell cycle of vertebrate somatic cells and yeast cells: G1/S cyclins, S cyclins, M cyclins, G1 cyclins. This division is useful when talking about most cell cycles, but it is not universal as some cyclins have different functions or timing in different cell types. G1/S Cyclins rise in late G1 and fall in early S phase. The Cdk- G1/S cyclin complex begins to induce the initial processes of DNA replication, primarily by arresting systems that prevent S phase Cdk activity in G1. The cyclins also promote other activities to progress the cell cycle, like centrosome duplication in vertebrates or spindle pole body in yeast. The rise in presence of G1/S cyclins is paralleled by a rise in S cyclins. S cyclins bind to Cdk and the complex directly induces DNA replication. The levels of S cyclins remain high, not only throughout S phase, but through G2 and early mitosis as well to promote early events in mitosis. M cyclin concentrations rise as the cell begins to enter mitosis and the concentrations peak at metaphase. Cell changes in the cell cycle like the assembly of mitotic spindles and alignment of sister-chromatids along the spindles are induced by M cyclin- Cdk complexes. The destruction of M cyclins during metaphase and anaphase, after the Spindle Assembly Checkpoint is satisfied, causes the exit of mitosis and cytokinesis. G1 cyclins do not behave like the other cyclins, in that the concentrations increase gradually (with no oscillation), throughout the cell cycle based on cell growth and the external growth-regulatory signals. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are chemically reactive chemical species containing oxygen. Examples include peroxides, superoxide, hydroxyl radical, and singlet oxygen. In a biological context, ROS are formed as a natural byproduct of the normal metabolism of oxygen and have important roles in cell signaling and homeostasis. However, during times of environmental stress (e.g., UV or heat exposure), ROS levels can increase dramatically. This may result in significant damage to cell structures. Cumulatively, this is known as oxidative stress. ROS are also generated by exogenous sources such as ionizing radiation. Due to the dual role of ROS, both prooxidant and antioxidant-based anticancer agents have been developed. However, modulation of ROS signaling alone seems not to be an ideal approach due to adaptation of cancer cells to ROS stress, redundant pathways for supporting cancer growth and toxicity from ROS-generating anticancer drugs. Combinations of ROS-generating drugs with pharmaceuticals that can break the redox adaptation could be a better strategy for enhancing cancer cell cytotoxicity. James Watson and others have proposed that lack of intracellular ROS due to a lack of physical exercise may contribute to the malignant progression of cancer, because spikes of ROS are needed to correctly fold proteins in the endoplasmatic reticulum and low ROS levels may thus aspecifically hamper the formation of tumor suppressor proteins. Reactive oxygen species are implicated in cellular activity to a variety of inflammatory responses including cardiovascular disease. They may also be involved in hearing impairment via cochlear damage induced by elevated sound levels, in ototoxicity of drugs such as cisplatin, and in congenital deafness in both animals and humans. The resulting damage caused by singlet oxygen reduces the photosynthetic efficiency of chloroplasts. In plants exposed to excess light, the increased production of singlet oxygen can result in cell death. Various substances such as carotenoids, tocopherols and plastoquinones contained in chloroplasts quench singlet oxygen and protect against its toxic effects. In addition to direct toxicity, singlet oxygen acts a signaling molecule. Oxidized products of β-carotene arising from the presence of singlet oxygen act as second messengers that can either protect against singlet oxygen induced toxicity or initiate programmed cell death. Levels of jasmonate play a key role in the decision between cell acclimation or cell death in response to elevated levels of this reactive oxygen species.

Kim Min-ji reports. About 17-thousand people are diagnosed with lung cancer in Korea every year,... 80 percent of them are fatal cases. Cancer cells travel through blood vessels and spread to other organs of the body, making it difficult to treat, especially among lung cancer patients. "Even if the patient receives an operation, there are cases where they fail to recover because of the spread. The patient needs to receive treatment that does not allow the cancer to spread." Korean researchers, for the first time, have found two key substances that are involved in the spread of cancer to other organs a particular protein that controls cell growth... and an enzyme that produces active oxygen. The researchers say these proteins and enzymes cause changes in cancer cells,... making them multiply in number,... causing them to spread. "We found that changes that occur in complex1 or p21 has an effect on the spread of cancer in patients. We hope to carry out strategic treatment that will be able to control the spread." On average, 66 percent of all cancer patients are able to survive five more years. However, if the cancer spreads,... the figure drops to 18-percent.
