Knee Arthritis Stretches & Exercises - Ask Doctor Jo

07:49
These knee arthritis stretches and exercises are simple to do and should provide some relief from knee arthritis pain. They are also great for keeping your knees nice and fit. Read Doctor Jo's full blog post about this at http://www.askdoctorjo.com/content/knee-arthritis-stretches-exercises The first stretch is for your calf muscles. Start off with your legs out in front of you. Keep the leg you want to stretch out in front of you. Take a stretch strap, dog leash, belt, or towel and wrap it around the ball of your foot. Relax your foot, and pull the strap towards you stretching your calf muscle. You should feel the stretch under your leg. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, and do three of them. The next stretch is for the hamstrings. Keep your leg that you want to stretch out in front of you. Try to keep your back straight and just bend at your hips. Keep your leg straight and pull your toes towards you to get an extra stretch. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and repeat three times. The last stretch is for your quad muscles. This time you will lie on your stomach to stretch. Wrap the strap or dog leash around your ankle, and then lie on your stomach. Bring the strap up and around your shoulder so you are comfortable. Then pull the strap towards you bringing the lower leg towards your bottom. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds doing three of them. Now we will move on to the exercises. The first exercise is going to be a quad set. Put your leg straight out in front of you again. You can use a towel roll underneath your knee as a target. Activate your quad muscle by squeezing it and pull your toes toward you at the same time. This will push your knee into the ground. Try to hold this for 5-10 seconds and do 10 of them. Next you will do a short arc quad (SAQ). For this, you will use a foam roll or a rolled up beach towel. You want something big so you have a good bend in your knee. Prop your leg over the roll with your knee on the roll. Try to keep your knee on the roll the whole time, and then lift your foot in the air until your leg is straight. If you pull your toes towards you at the end, this will help activate all the muscles in the leg. Try not to go fast because then you are only using momentum. Go slow and controlled with your movements. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights. For the next exercise, you will sit in a chair. This one is called a long arc quad (LAQ). This is similar to the SAQ where you want to go slow and controlled, and then bring your leg up straight out in front of you. Slowly come back down. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights. Now you are going to stand up for the last exercises. For the hamstring exercise standing up, you want to keep the top part of your leg as straight as possible in line with your body. It might try to come forward if your muscles are tight, but try to keep it down. Slowly bring your foot back behind you, like you are trying to kick your bottom. Make sure you are going slow and controlled with these. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights. The last one is for calf strengthening. With your feet about shoulder width apart, and holding onto something for balance if you need to, come up on your toes bringing your heels off the ground, and slowly come back down. If that becomes easy, you can do this one foot at a time. Start off with ten and work your way up to 20-25. 6 Exercises to Kill Chronic Knee, Foot or Hip Pain

11:15
If you, just like 15 to 25 percent of people in the US, suffer from chronic knee pain, or just get tired sore feet from constantly being on the go, pay attention to these 6 exercises to cure chronic knee, foot or hip pain. You don’t need an expensive treatment if you regularly perform the simple workout at home. Knees are the second largest source of recurrent pain, and once you add in the feet and hips, it turns out that the legs can cause big problems for a lot of people. Simple tip-toeing, besides strengthening your calves, helps improve your balance by reducing the area in contact with the ground, which makes keeping your balance quite a challenge. It strengthens your glutes and core muscles, improves your posture while simultaneously relieving back pain, increases the flexibility of your ankles, stretches the muscles around your shins, which are an otherwise difficult muscle group to target. Heel raises, ankle circles, resistance training and toe games are all effective exercises for relieving pain in different parts of your legs. Try to do rolling foot massage on a daily basis and do as many reps as you want or have time for. It gives the bottom of your foot a nice stretch and prevents foot-related injuries in the long run. Music: Diamond Ortiz - Inevitable https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Exercise #1. Heel raises 1:01 Exercise #2. Tip-toeing 3:22 Exercise #3. Ankle circles 4:34 Exercise #4. Resistance training 5:47 Exercise #5. Toe games 7:42 Exercise #6. Rolling foot massage 9:24 Bonus 10:04 SUMMARY -You’ll need to grab a chair for this exercise. Stand behind it and use the back of the chair to support yourself. This exercise helps strengthen your ankles and works the muscles around the knee. -Simply tip-toe around your house kind of quickly. This will strengthen your calves and give a little workout to your toes and the balls of your feet. Aim to do this exercise regularly for 5 to 15 minutes or until you get tired. -This exercise helps loosen up the tendons and muscles in your legs and ankles. It’ll improve your flexibility, range of motion, and overall comfort while walking or standing. -Resistance training targets the muscles in your calves and inner and outer thighs, not only toning but also strengthening them. -Toe games is an important exercise because it strengthens the tiny muscles in your toes and feet. They tend to be underdeveloped, which can be a big problem since they support your arches, keep your toes properly aligned, and even contribute to balance. -Rolling foot massage works the muscles in the heels and balls of your feet. It’s also a nice relaxing massage for your arches. -If your feet are killing you after a long day, use one thumb to put pressure on the spot between your big toe and pointer toe and use the other thumb to press the point between your ring toe and pinky toe. Gently massage these spots for up to 15 minutes for easy and quick relaxation. 10 Best Knee Arthritis Exercises for Pain Relief - Ask Doctor Jo

13:26
These knee arthritis exercises help the knees become stronger which can help with knee arthritis pain. They might be hard or painful in the beginning, but the stronger you get, the less pain you should have. Purchase an MD moisture wicking t-shirt here: http://amzo.me/ejncY (affiliate link) The first exercise is a quad set. This helps strengthen the quadriceps muscles in an isometric way. Next is a bridge. Bridging helps strengthen the hamstrings, glutes, and low back. Then you have hip abduction and hip adduction that work the outer and inner muscles. Straight leg raises (SLR) and clamshell exercises are often thought more of hip exercises, but they are great for the knee as well. Now sitting in a chair, you will do hip flexion and knee extension or long arch quads (LAQ). These are also easy to do if you work at a desk all day. Finally, standing up, you have heel/toe raises and mini squats. These will not only help with knee arthritis pain, but they will also help with balance and gait. Knee Exercises to Strengthen Muscles around the Patella to Avoid Knee Pain

05:22
Health & Fitness Expert, Aliesa George http://www.centerworks.com This video shows you a quick and easy exercise you can practice almost anywhere to help strengthen the muscles around the knee cap and learn how to stabilize the knee joint to avoid locking the knee. http://www.Centerworks.com/blog I like to call this the Kneecap Dance, but in technical terms the Knee cap is called the Patella, so this is actually a Patella tracking exercise that has the added benefit of helping to strengthen the quadriceps and stabilize the knee. Executed correctly, you'll be improving the muscle control and support for your knee joint and learning how not to jam the kneecap back and cause pain or locked knees. Ok, are you ready? Id encourage you to either wear shorts to get started, or roll your pant legs up so that you can see your knees. Sit down on the floor, or a mat, and since our focus isn't on posture today...if you want to sit with your back against a wall so you only have to pay attention to your knees and not worry about your core and back muscles working to help you sit tall... I'm fine with that. Extend both legs straight out in front of you. If you're feeling a hamstring stretch there's another muscle that needs some attention to help your knees feel better! If you want to take a bit of the stretch off, sit up on a phone book, or maybe on a footstool or in a chair. Its important that you have straight, but unlocked knees to practice this knee exercise. Alright, to start I like to put my fingers on my kneecap and just gently wiggle it around. You want to be sure that you can identify the difference between when it is relaxed, and when it is lifted. If its relaxed and has some wiggle room, you're in a good starting position. Take your hands and stroke upwards along the inside and outside of the thigh, starting along the sides of the knee, and lifting to about mid-thigh. This action uses your hands to cue the muscles of the quadriceps along the front and sides of the thigh to lift the kneecap. If you're watching your knee while this is happening, you want to look and notice that your knee cap is lifting up as the quadriceps muscle fires. Lift, hold for several seconds, then release and watch the knee cap slide back to its resting, relaxed position. Now that you've got your knee cap moving - here's the challenge: Place one hand under each knee or both hands under one knee if you're practicing with one leg at a time. Now do your knee cap lifting exercise. Did you feel your leg press back into your hands as your kneecap lifted? If your answer is yes! You are locking your knee as you straighten your leg, which places more pressure and potential pain on the knee joint. So keep your hand behind your knee until you can move your kneecaps and keep the leg bones straight and still. If you can lift your kneecaps and your leg doesn't move. Congratulations, you've figured out how to do the exercise correctly. That's it! Its a simple knee exercise that you really can do just about anywhere. I like to start seated, but eventually, you want to also practice this while you're standing up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7gPajdzje0

Shoulder Arthritis Stretches & Exercises - Ask Doctor Jo

07:25
These shoulder arthritis stretches and exercises should help relieve the pain caused by shoulder arthritis. See Doctor Jo’s blog post about this at: http://www.askdoctorjo.com/shoulder-arthritis The first stretches are called pendulums. Use a chair or counter top for balance, and lean over so your arm hangs down towards the ground. Move your body, not your arm in circles so your arm swings around like a pendulum. You can also rock front to back and side to side. Start off with 10 of each and work your way up to a minute of each. Then you are going to be in standing using a weight or resistive band. Try to keep your arm straight the whole time and don't bend your elbows. Your thumb is going to be pointed upwards. The first two are front and back which are flexion and extension. You don't need to raise the band way above your head. You can bring it to a 90 degree angle which is where your arm is parallel to the floor for flexion. Now you are going do put your arm out at a 45 degree angle which we call scaption. Now you will do shoulder shrugs. Lift your shoulders up towards the ceiling, but try to keep your head and neck in one spot. Don’t bring your ears down towards your shoulders, lift your shoulders up. Do 10 of these. Now for shoulder circles. You can roll them clockwise, and then counter clockwise. This will stretch out the shoulder and neck muscles. Start with10 each way, and work your way up from there. The next exercise is going to be rows or scapular retraction. You can use your feet as an anchor. You want to keep your elbows in close to your body and make a rowing motion. Try to squeeze your shoulder blades together when you pull back. Make sure you are using a slow controlled motion. For the final stretches you can use a Swiss/therapy ball, or if you don’t have one, you can use a table or counter top. This is an active assisted stretch, which means you are moving the arm now, but the ball will support the weight. You will slide your arms forward with your thumbs facing upward towards the ceiling and lean your body forward until you feel a stretch. You can stabilize the ball with your other hand, or stretch one shoulder at a time. You can also go out at an angle like the scaption or completely out to the side to stretch your pec muscles as well. Hip Arthritis Stretches & Exercises - Ask Doctor Jo

05:37
These hip arthritis stretches and exercises are easy to do in the comfort of your home and should provide some pain relief. See Doctor Jo's blog post about this at http://www.askdoctorjo.com/content/hip-arthritis-stretches-exercises The first exercise will be sitting down. Make sure your back is against the chair, and your knees and hips are at about a 90 degree angle. Then you will bring your knee straight up towards the ceiling, and this is called a hip flexion exercise. Make sure you do slow and controlled movements. Start off with 10 and work your way up to 20-25. If those become easy, then you can add ankle weights. The next exercise will be a sit to stand. Again, you want this to be controlled movements. Try not to just pop up and plop down. Put your feet about shoulder width apart and lean forward as you stand up, then stick your bottom back and have your chest forward while you sit back down. Try to also keep your feet flat and your knees behind your toes when doing this. If that is easy, you can just tap your bottom on the chair and not sit all the way back down. Start off with 10 of these, and then work your way up to 20-25. So now get down on the ground, and you will stretch out those hip flexor muscles. Keep the knee of the leg you want to stretch on the ground, and then bring the other leg up into a lunge like position. Try to keep your back upright and straight. If you lean forward with your upper body, you won’t get a good stretch. Shift your hips forward until you feel a stretch in front of the thigh. Hold this for 30 seconds and do three of them. Lying down on the ground in supine or on your back, you will do a hip abduction exercise. With your legs straight out, try to keep your toes pointing up toward the ceiling through the whole movement. Then slowly slide your leg out to the side, and then slide it back in. Start off with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and they are easy, then you don’t need to do them in this position anymore. Now roll onto your side for the clamshell exercise. This one is harder than it looks. You want to keep your hips straight up and down, perpendicular to the floor. Your hips will want to roll back, but keep them up as much as you can. Then keeping your knees together with one on top of the other, bend your knees slightly towards your body. Then lift the top leg up slightly, like a clamshell opening up. It doesn’t have to be a big movement because you want to keep your hips from moving. Start off with 10 of these, and then work your way up to 20-25. If they become easy, you can add a weight or use a resistive band. The last exercise is a bridge. Even though this is a simple movement, it really works the hamstrings and glut muscles. Lie on your back with your knees propped up. Slowly lift your butt off the ground until your hips are in a straight line with your chest and knees. You can go one segment of the spine at a time to really loosen up your back. Start off with 10 of these, and then work your way up to 20-25. Hip Arthritis Stretches & Exercises - Ask Doctor Jo

06:28
Hip arthritis can cause pain all around the hip and in the groin area. It can also be painful when you walk. These hip arthritis stretches and exercises should help make the hip area stronger to relieve the pain. See Doctor Jo’s blog post about this at: http://www.askdoctorjo.com/hip-arthritis-stretches-exercises The first stretch is called the pelvic tilt. You will roll back onto your back with your knees bent. You want to imagine pushing your belly button into the ground, or push your back flat onto the ground like you are squishing something. You can put your hand under the curve of your back, and try to push your back into your hand. Make sure you are breathing and not holding your breath while doing these exercises. Next you will do a bridge. Push your bottom up off the ground, but try to do this slowly, and do one segment of your back at a time curling upward. Then slowly go down the same way, one segment at a time. Now you will do a four way hip lying down. Start off lying on your back. For all of these you want to try to keep your leg straight by locking out your knee, and pull your toes towards your nose to activate the muscles in your leg. Slowly raise your leg to about the other side where the knee is bent, and then slowly come back down. Then roll onto your side with the leg you want to work on the bottom for hip adduction. You can place your bent knee on top in front of or behind the leg on the ground, which ever is more comfortable. You won’t be able to lift your leg high without rolling your hips. Then you will roll to the other side for hip abduction. Keep your leg straight, and try to lead with your heel and take your leg slightly behind you to engage the glut muscles. Then you will roll over onto your stomach for hip extension. You won’t be able to lift your leg very high with this one either. Do all of these ten times, and work your way up to 20-25. The next exercise will be a plank on your elbows. You can do this modified with your knees bent and on the ground, or you can get into a full plank position. Make sure your elbow lines up with your shoulder, and that your body is in a straight line. Hold this for about 20-30 seconds, and work your way up to a minute. Now you are going to get onto all fours or in the quadruped position. Try to keep your hands directly underneath your shoulders, and try to keep your back in a straight line, no arching up or down. Kick one leg straight out behind you, and raise the opposite arm at the same time. Some people call this the bird dog. Do ten on each side. Exercises That Fight Arthritis And Make Joints Flexible

11:22
These top exercises will help you fight against arthritis and make your joints flexible. Being diagnosed with arthritis isn’t something a doctor or patient is ever happy with. It hinders everyday activities, and for those who are fitness enthusiasts, it will compromise their workouts. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 2013-2015, an estimated 54.4 million US adults had been told by doctors that they had some form of arthritis. Arthritis is any type of disorder that affects the joints. Symptoms which are generally associated with arthritis include joint pain, stiffness, swelling, redness, and / or a limited or decreased range of motion in the affected area. #Arthritis #Joints #Health Timestamps: 10. Chair Leg Raises: 0:12 9. Knee to Chest: 1:01 8. Wall Squat: 1:56 7. Bicep Curls: 2:48 6. Zumba Fitness: 3:28 5. Qi Gong: 4:24 4. Elliptical Machine: 5:15 3. Gardening: 6:12 2. Pilates: 6:48 1. Walking: 7:56 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music Summary: 10. Chair Leg Raises: Lesley Hlad, a doctor of physical therapy, said in an interview with Health.com that chair leg raises helps you control your range of motion with your legs and less with your arms. 9. Knee to Chest: Physical therapist William Oswald also explained to WebMD that doing range-of-motion exercises can help with stiffness and improve flexibility. For the hip, he suggests doing the ‘knee to chest’ exercise. 8. Wall Squat: William Oswald, mentioned in an interview with WebMD that strong muscles will support and strengthen your joints. He adds that strengthening the lower body can take some pressure off the hip and knee joints. 7. Bicep Curls: I know what you’re thinking: if you have aching joints in your arms how are you supposed to lift weights? Well this exercise should be done with light hand weights or a tensor band, explains Danielle Anderson, a personal and adaptive trainer. She told Health.com that building up your endurance will help strengthen your joints and build muscle which will help with daily activities. 6. Zumba Fitness: Most people wouldn’t think twice about doing Zumba if they’re suffering from arthritis. But exercise physiologist Caryn Locke tells Health.com that Zumba not only burns calories but does it without jarring your joints. She adds that Zumba is mostly about movement and fluidity. 5. Qi Gong: Sometimes the best exercise is the one that is outside of your comfort zone. Tess Franklin, an exercise physiologist, teaches Chinese exercises. Franklin said to Health.com that this exercise is more about strengthening your core muscles in the abdomen area by trying to maintain posture and balance. 4. Elliptical Machine: This exercise can do wonders for people with arthritis. Many people who have arthritis in their knees use this machine at the gym and slowly work their way up. It can help increase their endurance and provide secondary strength to their arms. The elliptical machine is a great alternative to a treadmill, which can be quite taxing on the body, and difficult to use if someone has not built up the endurance to run. 3. Gardening: I know what you’re thinking ‘gardening is not an exercise.’ On the contrary; gardening is an incredible exercise that also has hidden health benefits that you may not have been aware of. Pain expert Manu Mathews explains to Health.com that exercise can help boost endorphins, which are feel-good chemicals that can help ease depression. If you were unaware, depression has been linked to RA (Rheumatoid arthritis). 2. Pilates: Tresa Sauer, a personal trainer at the YWCA of Minneapolis, was kindly able to explain to Health.com that doing Pilates is a great way to stabilize and strengthen your joints. She suggests that people suffering from arthritis should do the shoulder bridge exercise. 1. Walking: Exercise Physiologist William R. Sukala explained in an interview with Weight Watchers that losing weight goes hand-in-hand with reducing the pain and regaining the flexibility of your joints that are suffering from arthritis. Eric Robertson, who is a Physical Therapist, agrees with Sukala , stating that “cartilage is like a sponge and it gets nutrients from the compression and decompression of your body weight as you walk.” ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to Bestie : https://goo.gl/tUqro6 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bestieinc/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.bestie.com/

Hand Arthritis Stretches & Exercises - Ask Doctor Jo

03:28
Hand arthritis is pretty common, and it can be very debilitating. Since the joints in the hand are small, you don’t have to do much to relieve the pain, you just have to keep them moving. These stretches and exercises should help your hand arthritis feel better. See Doctor Jo’s blog post about this at: http://www.askdoctorjo.com/hand-arthritis You can set your arm on a table or flat surface to relax it, or if you don’t have anything available, you can prop your elbow up on your knee or thigh. Start off with a fist and warm up your wrist. With your palm side facing down, move your fist up and down at the wrist for flexion and extension. Now move it side to side in a radial and ulnar deviation movement. Ten in each direction should be fine since this is just to warm up the muscles. Next, you will keep your fingers straight, and take your thumb and touch each finger in the middle of your hand, and then spread them all back apart. You can do three times back and forth. Now bend your fingers at the joint closest to your wrist, still keeping the fingers as straight as you can. Bend down and back up gliding the tendons up and down. Now move to the next joint down the fingers. This time open your fingers, and then curl the top part of your fingers down for the stretch. Finally, go to the last joint farthest down the finger. You might have to hold onto the near part of your finger so just the last joint moves. Just start off with ten of each of these with a continuous movement. For the last stretch, start with all your fingers close together, and then spread them out as far as you can, just like you are fanning them out. You don’t have to do a lot of these exercises since these are small joints. 2-3 minutes, 2-3 times a day should be plenty.
