Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay $1 billion for an 18.4 percent stake in Irish drugmaker Elan Corp, and will acquire a major stake in Elan's portfolio of experimental drugs to treat Alzheimer's disease. The transaction will give J&J a 25 percent interest in a closely watched Alzheimer's drug, which Elan is developing in a 50-50 partnership with Wyeth. And Wyeth is being acquired by Pfizer Inc. Home prices have fallen 32.6 percent from their peak three years ago, and Barclays Capital economist Michelle Meyer said that prices will fall by a double-digit percentage from already beaten-down levels, resulting in an overall 40 percent plunge by the time foreclosures peak in the second half of 2010 U.S. employers cut far more jobs than expected last month and the unemployment rate hit 9.5 percent, the highest in 26 years, underscoring the likelihood of a long, slow recovery from recession. Since the economy fell into recession in December 2007, 6.5 million nonfarm jobs have been lost and the unemployment rate has nearly doubled. Today U.S. marshals began the seizure of the luxury $7 million Manhattan apartment of imprisoned fraudster Bernard Madoff and his wife, Ruth. A spokesman with the U.S. Marshals Service said marshals were carrying out the orders of a judge made in the days before Madoff was sentenced on Monday to an effective life term for his multibillion-dollar fraud. Today the Exelon Corp sweetened its hostile takeover bid for NRG Energy Inc. by 12 percent to $8 billion in stock, citing newly identified cost savings along with NRG's recent deal for Reliant Energy's Texas retail business. If NRG combines with Exelon, the new company would be the largest U.S. power generator, providing energy to about 45 million homes. Exelon is already the nation's largest nuclear power company

While Scott Budden and his company, Orchard Point Oyster Company, might be the face of a new generation of oystermen on the Chesapeake Bay, his concerns about the Conowingo Dam, its owner, the Exelon Corporation, and their pending approval for a 46 year old lease to operate it, has a very familiar ring to it. Just like other oystermen working in the north part of the Bay for many years, Scott believes the company needs to listen more and proactively coordinate with oyster producers when, and how much, sediment is released into the Bay from the Dam and the Susquehanna River. In short, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission plans to renew Exelon's operating lease for almost half a century this year. As part of that permitting, the energy corporation must obtain the approval of is required to obtain a Clean Water Act certification from the Maryland Department of the Environment for the continued operation of the facility and the state has encouraged public comments on this long-term arrangement until January 15. And Scott has quite a few comments. In his Spy interview last week, Scott talks about the negative impact of Exelon's current practice of releasing the dam's waters to generate power, regardless of the sediment impact on Bay's oyster beds. He also talks about the need for more significant partnerships between Exelon and the aquaculture industry to ensure the minimum amount of damage to the Bay and its essential oyster industry.

Consumers trimmed borrowing in May for the fourth straight month as the recession took another bite out of investments and drove unemployment higher. This marks the latest move by consumers to curb borrowing, pay down debt and strengthen household budgets to cope with the recession, which is the longest since World War II. The cyber attack that overwhelmed computers at U.S. and South Korean government agencies for days was even broader than initially realized. Targets included the White House, the Pentagon, the National Security Agency, Homeland Security Department, State Department, the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq stock market and The Washington Post... Google is hoping to gain greater control over how personal computers work with its plans to develop a free operating system that will attack Microsoft's golden goose — its long-dominant Windows franchise. The new operating system will be based on Google's 9-month-old Web browser, Chrome. NRG Energy said today that it has turned down Exelon's revised hostile takeover bid of $8 billion in stock because it undervalues the business. NRG said it found the new bid was not in its shareholders' best interest but said it represented a "step in the right direction." and it is still open to additional proposals. Struggling No. 1 U.S. trucking company YRC Worldwide has asked investment bank Rothschild to evaluate potential bond exchanges as part of its restructuring plans. Rothschild, which specializes in mergers, acquisitions and restructuring, including bankruptcy advice. was retained early this year but has only recently been asked to take a more active role.

PJM, other eastern RTOs, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission are actively considering whether and how RTO market design should take state policies into account. The options under consideration range from not taking any state policies into account at one extreme to requiring every state policy to be factored into capacity market bids at the other extreme. The PJM proposal, which falls somewhere between those extremes, has proposed a two-tier capacity pricing mechanism to address some yet-to-be-defined set of state subsidies. This panel examines PJM’s proposal and consider alternative approaches to make the wholesale markets work better with state policies. Moderator: Sarah Adair, Senior Policy Associate, Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions Panel: Kathleen Barron, Senior Vice President Federal Affairs & Competitive Market Policy, Exelon Peter Fuller, Vice President Market and Regulatory Affairs, NRG Energy Marissa Gillett, Senior Advisor to the Chairman, Maryland Public Service Commission Darlene Phillips, Director, Strategic Policy & External Affairs for PJM The second panel discussion at "Wholesale Electricity Markets at a Crossroads? http://pissinontheroses.blogspot.com/2013/04/possible-emergency-radioactive-release.html (c)2013 www.POTRBLOG.com According to NRC Event Number: 48939, An emergency was declared at the La Salle Nuclear plant in Marseilles, IL. A lightning strike during a thunderstorm took out all station power, resulting into both nuclear generators going into emergency shutdown and "primary containment vent and purge valves were opened to vent the Unit 2 containment". Five hours later Unit 1 was also vented but that venting "was being performed through the Standby Gas Treatment system which is a filtered system We can not estimate how much radioactivity was released because "Due to the loss of offsite power, the Station Vent Stack Wide Range Gas Monitor (WRGM) and the Standby Gas Treatment Wide Range Gas Monitor (VGWRGM) also lost power" Apparently the radioactive release monitors don't get emergency backup power; which is convenient from the nuclear plant's perspective of not being able to measure and then having to report radioactive releases that happen under such conditions. But, it is disconcerting for anyone downwind. Our check of weather conditions indicated the winds were blowing East at 20-30 mph. The on going thunderstorm also muddles the situation as the Terrestrial Gamma Rays produced by thunderstorms can result in the fissioning of any radioactive materials released during such a emergency venting event. Apr. 15, 2015 (Mimesis Law) -- In the first part of a wide-ranging interview, DLA Piper's Global Co-Chairman Roger Meltzer tells Aric Press that one of the more interesting takeaways from Dentons' merger with Dacheng is how the Chinese government is possibly signaling interest in Chinese law firms having a more global reach. Asked if DLA Piper is poised to do a similar deal, Meltzer says it's "unlikely that we would not consider looking very seriously at the right Chinese law firm." Meltzer also talks about his firm's recent merger with Canada's Davis LLP.
