A learning organization encourages personal mastery and cultivates open feedback to see problems and opportunities on all levels. Some argue that learning organizations attract and retain more talents. Others say that there is a competitive advantage for an organization whose people learn faster than the people of other organizations. Here are 6 characteristics most have in common: They Cherish: An Open Culture. Learning organizations encourage everyone to share information, admit to mistakes and practice giving and taking constructive criticism. Once the problem is found, they try to understand its root cause and fix it. To achieve such a culture: walls are removed, information is shared and leaders show their human sides. They Design and Implement: Feedback Loops Some establish 360 degrees surveys, in which people assess themselves, their peers and their bosses. Employees at 5-star hotels ask guests for their opinions. Top schools may videotape teachers so they can later study themselves. Some even make feedback a team effort. Before any new project, they all get together to kick things off. After the project they meet again to share and reflect on what has happened. They Promote: Personal Mastery Employees try to achieve personal mastery in their fields. Once they become experts, they feel proud of their work, they are motivated intrinsically and they can create positive change wherever they are. For example, a cleaner might come up with an idea on how to save water and an accountant on how to save bank fees. The job of the boss is to connect all experts and give directions. They Plan for: Intelligent Fast Failure. When they build something new, they don’t spend time to make assumptions on paper. Instead, they create what’s called Minimum Viable Product, a simple prototype with only the core functions. This is then presented to users as early as possible to test what they think. Because it is imperfect, even friends give their honest opinions. The goal: fail fast, but collect intelligent information so you can improve while going forward. They Steal: Best Practices Picasso apparently said that "good artists borrow, great artists steal". Learning organizations study others, steal best practices and then implement them fast. The newspaper The Economists took advice from George Orwell; its editors never use jargon if everyday English works. Printing manufacturers stole the razor-and-blades business model from Gillette, selling printers cheap but ink expensive. They Cultivate: A Common Vision A learning organization prospers when all members share a common vision. That way employees can understand the importance of their role, connect the dots and develop systems thinking. When goals are clear, regulations can be reduced and people can create their own personal benchmarks of success. This reduces bureaucracy, authority and corruption. Salesmen and author Zig Ziglar once wrote: "the only thing worse than training people and having them leave, is not training them and having them stay." At a learning organization education happens as a side-product of working together, as everybody learns from each other to adapt to whatever the future might bring.

How do you define a learning organization? by Peter Senge, Author of The Fifth Discipline

Peter Senge is a Senior Lecturer in Leadership and Sustainability at the MIT Sloan School of Management. The Journal of Business Strategy (September/October 1999) named Senge one of the 24 people who has had the greatest influence on business strategy over the last 100 years. The Financial Times (2000) named him one of the world’s top management gurus, andBusinessWeek (October 2001) rated Senge one of the top 10 management gurus. Senge has lectured extensively throughout the world, translating the abstract ideas of systems theory into tools for better understanding of economic and organizational change. He studies decentralizing the role of leadership in organizations so as to enhance the ability of employees to work productively toward common goals, and the managerial and institutional changes needed to build more sustainable enterprises—those businesses that foster social and natural as well as economic well-being. Senge’s work articulates a cornerstone position of human values in the workplace: namely, that vision, purpose, reflectiveness, and systems thinking are essential if organizations are to realize their potential. He has worked with leaders in business, education, civil society, healthcare, and government. Senge is the founding chair of the Society for Organizational Learning (SoL), a global community of corporations, researchers, and consultants dedicated to the “interdependent development of people and their institutions.” He is the author of the widely acclaimed book, The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of The Learning Organization (1990). With colleagues Charlotte Roberts, Rick Ross, Bryan Smith, and Art Kleiner, he is the co-author of The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook: Strategies and Tools for Building a Learning Organization (1994) and a second fieldbook The Dance of Change: The Challenges to Sustaining Momentum in Learning Organizations (March 1999), co-authored by George Roth. In September 2000, Senge co-authored a fieldbook on education, the award-winning Schools That Learn: A Fifth Discipline Fieldbook for Educators, Parents, and Everyone Who Cares About Education (2000). The Fifth Discipline hit a nerve within the business and education communities by introducing the theory of learning organizations. Since its publication, more than one million copies have been sold worldwide. In 1997, Harvard Business Review identified it as one of the seminal management books of the past 75 years. The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook was developed in response to questions from readers of The Fifth Discipline who wanted more help with tools, methods, and practical experiences in developing enhanced learning capabilities within their own companies. The Dance of Change is based on more recent experiences of companies developing learning capabilities over many years, and the strategies leaders develop to deal with the many challenges this work entails. He also has authored many articles published in both academic journals and the business press on systems thinking in management, and has co-authored Presence: Human Purpose and the Field of the Future. Senge holds a BS in engineering from Stanford University as well as an SM in social systems modeling and a PhD in management from MIT. #DESCRIPTION Peter Senge answers the question by first suggesting that “we jettison the jargon” and work on organizations where everyone works together successfully. The time, equipment and materials available Your planning should include - What you need to collect and set out. Introducing the work. What the children will do. Monitoring and assessing their learning. Helping children of different abilities. We pontificate about worker empowerment, but then we revert to command-and-control: our product owners mandate project scope and deadlines, and our Scrum Masters assign tasks to team members. Players learn by playing fun, physical games of movement. These games create a social atmosphere and a full body and mind experience that make it easy and fun to learn. Business 101: Principles of Management #34 – How to apply Kotter's 8-Step Model | Example of John Kotter's 8-Step Organizational Change Model’s Application Carl used John Kotter's eight-step change model to introduce a new interior shampooing service at his carwash. Specific steps of the model include: establish a sense of urgency, create the guiding coalition, develop a vision and strategy, communicate the change vision, empower broad-based action, generate short-term wins, consolidate gains to produce more change and anchor change in the organizational culture. Each step of the Kotter model was discussed using Carl's carwash as the contextual example for making lasting change at the carwash. However, Kotter's model can be universally applied in a variety of change situations to promote the successful implementation of change in any organization. Kotter's eight-step change model including: create urgency, form a powerful coalition, create change vision, communicate the vision, remove obstacles, create short-term wins, build on the change, and anchor the change in organizational culture. Let's learn about some tools and techniques of plan human resource management process in this PMP project management tutorial. First we will look into project Organization Charts and Position Descriptions. Various formats exist to document team member roles and responsibilities. Most of the formats fall into one of three types: hierarchical, matrix, or text-oriented. Regardless of the method utilized, the objective is to ensure that each work package has an unambiguous owner and that all team members have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities. First we will look into the hierarchical model. In this model, The traditional organization chart structure can be used to show positions and relationships in a graphical, top-down format. the organizational breakdown structure (O BS) is arranged according to an organization’s existing departments, units, or teams with the project activities or work packages listed under each department. As shown in the example, the project organization is split into 3 reporting groups named, Hardware leader, software leader and product leader and the other reporting relationships are portrayed at below these roles. Next will look into RACI matrix. It is a grid that shows the project resources assigned to each work package. It is used to illustrate the connections between work packages or activities and project team members. In the example, R indicates responsible, A indicates accountable, C indicates consulted and I indicates informed. In some of the projects, simple text formats are used which has the details of roles, responsibilities, authority etc. Here a sample for that. let's move on to some interesting organizational theories. First we will look at McGregor’s Theory of X and Y. according to this theory, all the workers are fit into two categories. First one is theory X which states that, People should be watched every minute. People avoid work whenever possible. second theory is Theory Y which states that, People are willing to work without supervision , nd they want to achieve something. Next theory is maslows hierarchy of needs. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory in psychology, comprising a five tier model of human needs, often depicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramid. There are totally five levels and One must satisfy lower level deficit needs ,before progressing on to meet higher level growth needs. Here are the five levels from bottom of the pyramid to top. physiological, safety, love and belonging , esteem and self actualization. Next we will look into Herzberg theory. - This heory calls satisfiers as motivators and the dissatisfiers as hygiene factors - Using the term ""hygiene"" in the sense that they are considered maintenance factors that are necessary to avoid dissatisfaction but that by themselves do not provide satisfaction. As per this theory the hygine factors are, - Company policy - Supervision - Relationship with Boss - Work conditions - Salary - Relationship with Peers And motivators are, - Achievement - Recognition - Work itself - Responsibility - Advancement - Growth
