Using Google Earth and Sketch Up for Construction Site Planning

03:09
This video describes how you can use Google Earth and sketch up for planning site specific aspects to sustainnability. Google Earth is an ideal platform to visualise such site specific issues. Using Google Earth, you can get a perspective view, zoom in and zoom out. You can mark a particular job site witha place marker which gives you longitude and latitude for that location. You can also overlay geographich information on the area of the job site for instance, I have searched for concrete suppliers. Can use a ruler to determine distance to distance. Using tools such as rulers you can precisely determine distance of the jobsite from a particular supplier. Aerial image can than be imported into tools such as sketch up. Details such as equipment, people, machinery, vehicles can be inserted to give a size of scale. Than, you can use the model for safety and environmental management planning. Key benefit is that entire project team can think through the project in 3D. This include aspects such as environmental control or impact on neighboring properites, key site planning aspects such as welfare facilities for site workers and access and exit routes to the site.

12 Most Affordable Ways to Reduce the Cost of Building a New House on a Budget

03:31
This video brings to you 12 Most Affordable Ways to Reduce the Cost of Building a New House on a Budget. Some of the most Affordable Ways to Reduce the Cost of Building a New House on a Budget include: 1. Find a Good Architect Allow me to draw the following analogy before I start; Most of us when we are sick, we visit the best doctor, or when we have a court case, we hire the best lawyer. But when it comes to building our dream house on the contrary we go for the cheap. A good architect will give you; • A Good Design – A good design builds a good house. • Efficient floor plan- Optimal room sizes without space wastage • Sustainable Design – Low running costs during occupancy • Good Finishes - Finishes carry the biggest cost of the house 2. Keep the Design Simple Most times in design, Less is always More. Keep the design simple but not simplistic. Too much zig and zag means more costs. Take off what you do not need and leave the essentials without compromising. A simple design entails: • Floor Plan – Square/Rectangular plans are cheaper to build than circular plans • Open plan living – Means less walling, more daylighting and sociable living environment. • Space Utilization – Use some spaces for multiple functions such as; Dining Cum Study • Roof Design- Complex roof design means more roofing materials leading to more costs. 3. Hire The Right Builder/Contractor This is the BIGGEST and most IMPORTANT decision for anyone planning to build their dream house. Hire a builder/contractor that will listen to you. This means he will build a house you want and not what he thinks you want. A good builder will guarantee you: • Minor Variations- A home build on Budget • No time overruns- A home build within the contract period • Good Workmanship- A home build without shortcuts • Experienced – Good connections with subcontractors 4. Bid out Your Cost Have quotations / bids from potential builders and compare their quotes. Remember cheaper is not necessarily the best. A good quote will tell you something about your potential builder; • A low Quote- Could mean Poor workmanship resulting future expensive repairs and maintenance • Optimal Quote- Could mean a builders discount and good connections with suppliers • A High Quote- Could mean too many subcontractors involved or building materials are subpar 6. Shop for Fixtures and Fittings Yourself The choice of house fittings is as subjective as the house owner. Therefore it makes economic sense for you to buy most of them yourself. Keep an eye for annual sale or discount at your local hardware. These may include: • Floor and Wall Tiles- Colours and Designs • Toilets , Wash Hand Basins, Kitchen Sinks • Inbuilt Ovens and Cooker • Kitchen and Dhobi/Laundry sinks • Flat Pack Kitchen Cabinets and Wardrobes 7. Smart material choices The choice of materials from the outset is key to managing costs of your building materials. The choices vary from: • Buying your materials yourself- Use Coupons, discounts or annual sale • Salvaging used materials- Recycled materials and Second hand fixtures • Choose a Forgiving Aesthetic- Low cost and Low maintenance 7. Small is Smarter. Keep it small. Just how much space for you need for your new house. For good Green credentials, building small is always better. • Scale Down- Get rid of stuff/space you do not need. • Climate- Design for the regional climate. Do you need a Basement/Garage in the tropics? • Space Utilization – Use some spaces for multiple functions such as; Dining Cum Study 8. Choose Your Friends Avoid peer pressure when building your house. Most people would be tempted to build what a friend has built, or Insist on the Architect designing for them a house like their friends. Since design is subjective, go with your gut feeling and pick what fits tour taste and preference as opposed to copy and paste. Unless your friends are contributing to your mortgage payment or construction loan, don’t fall to peer-pressure just because you want to feel like you fit-in. 9. Buy Stock Plans If you can’t afford an architect, architect designed stock plans like sheltermode.com offer an alternative affordable option. Most stock plans go for a fraction of the cost of professional fees and can be amended on site to suite the client’s needs with marginal costs. Don’t fall prey to plan books and articles in your local store or street vendor. Most of these books are outdated and lack any serious professional input in design and specific. NDOT Stormwater News: USA Parkway, Fall 2016

03:17
USA Parkway is located between the Carson River and Truckee River and, as with all projects, NDOT takes great measures from the design and planning stages, during construction and after construction, to help protect and preserve Nevada’s waters. Tyler Thew Stormwater Planning and Design Manager “USA Parkway is an interesting project because it’s ‘design build’. In these projects, we work together throughout the contract with the contractor to design and implement the water quality improvements that are needed to meet NDOT’s environmental requirements. In this case, we were lucky to be able to work with the contractor and incorporate a substantial amount of low impact development on this project. Those changes included removing barrier rail that was concentrating water on the project, we also flattened slopes, and increased shoulder areas so that we could have infiltration. With these improvements, we fit more naturally into the environment and it also creates improvements that are easier to maintain for NDOT.” The designs are then taken out to the field… where the contractor works together with the stormwater compliance and enforcement team to implement the temporary stormwater controls. Mike Simmons Stormwater Compliance and Enforcement Manager “During the design and planning phases of the project, we work together with the contractor to help develop and review temporary pollution control plans for the project.” So what does a stormwater pollution prevention control look like? Brad Celarec Deputy Project Manager for Ames Construction USA Pkwy “I’m standing here in a rock check dam. We designed many of these features to help during the construction of the project phase protect the environment from erosion. A rock check dam is something to control flows of water and what we’ve done here is size appropriate rocks and laid them perpendicular through this channel so if and when it ever rains here in Nevada we can control sediment from running through the channel and creating more erosion downstream.” BMPs can be temporary, permanent…or both… Tyler Thew “Sure, this is a water quality basin and it’s also an energy dissipater. We were able to include water quality impact in something that we already build, which is one of the great things about the project. Normally we would have energy dissipaters at the outlet of a culvert to slow down water which also decreases erosion downstream….but in the design build project, we were able to work with the contractor to also expand the limits of some of these water quality basins so it provides water quality treatment for some of the flows coming from outside of the culvert areas like roadside ditches and other things that were draining into it.” Stormwater stewardship is an essential element of all NDOT operations, and NDOT is committed to being a leader in stormwater management and preserving Nevada’s water quality for future generations. Sam Lompa Resident Engineer USA Parkway Project “We are taking stormwater very seriously. We make sure all of our temporary BMPs are in place before we go and start opening up new ground. So we ensure through the design and construction that after the construction is complete, the water that will run off of our project will be clean.” Be sure to like and follow us on social media @loveNVwaters.

Ten small business ideas for electrical engineers. Manufacture Voltage Stabilizers Especially in low power regions, a voltage stabilizer manufacturing can work extremely well. Buying a voltage stabilizer becomes important as without it appliances like refrigerator, water heater and much more can’t work properly. Manufacture Voltage Stabilizers Especially in low power regions, a voltage stabilizer manufacturing can work extremely well. Buying a voltage stabilizer becomes important as without it appliances like refrigerator, water heater and much more can’t work properly. Freelance Electrical Designer Electrical engineers can work online on a freelance basis on some websites such as freelancer,or Upwork etc. This offers flexible work schedules as well as negotiable service charges. There are several electrical design jobs available online. Home Appliances Design and Manufacturing This is a great way to make money if you work on general home appliance needs like electronic mosquito killer, electronic healthcare gadgets etc. You can build your own Wireless Home Security gadgets with surveillance cameras. Provision and servicing of home security systems for individuals and small businesses are highly lucrative. Production of Cooling Solution The cooling solution market keeps growing on a yearly basis. Installation of cooling systems for corporate bodies is highly lucrative. Corporate bodies are seeking to make their environment more conducive to business and this makes them request cooling system installation. LED Light Production LED connotes light emitting diode. LED has become increasingly famous now. There are various colors of LED lights available now which range from 2700K to 6500K, and they may be yellow, dark, mild yellow as well as ultra white. Building a full scale LED light production business requires a large-scale factory business operation with a complex manufacturing process. Interestingly though, anyone can start an LED light assembling business on a small or medium scale. Electronic Pump and Fan Regulator Production The electronic pump controller is a new upgraded product which is gaining attention now. It has the capacity to stop the pump automatically. It is used for both industrial and household purposes. It also has the ability to safeguard the pump from damage that results from dry-running. This business can also be initiated with little capital. Electronic fan regulator is made up of TRIAC, discs and potent isometric resistances to enhance step-less regulation of fan speed. This is an important household item. An electronic fan regulator simply regulates fan speed and it is one of the best lucrative ideas for an electrical engineer. Electronic Toy Production Electronic toys are imported into various countries. Electronic remote controlled toys are very famous in countries like India. That means a readily acceptable market awaits you. 10.Green Consulting These are consulting services that help businesses to be more eco-friendly. You can go into green business if you possess a combination of electrical engineering license and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification (LEED). Green consulting is targeted at helping both entrepreneurs and landlords secure a way to improve energy efficiency. Electronic Product Recycling: The rate at which electronic waste pile up is quite alarming. New fax machines, computers, TVs, printers, mobile phones and several other electronic devices get manufactured everyday thereby relegating the old ones to the waste. It is surprising that majority of the personal computers in some countries are categorized as electronic waste. That is a huge market. But before you go into this business, ensure that you have some strategic plans in place. As a deputy CIO, he and his team oversee portals and records management, the software portfolio and its testing and certifications, a portfolio of business systems that includes mainframe financial applications, a data center and the planning for cloud migration, the rigorous investment management certification process, and IT system preparations for financial audits. From the transcript: Michael Krigsman: (00:00:43) Yeah. Tony Joyce, how are you? Tell us about NAVFAC, and tell us about the Navy and your role. Anthony Joyce: (00:00:50) NAVFAC is probably best thought of when you look at all the buildings. The shore infrastructure is really the secret buzzword for what NAVFAC does: the buildings, of course the planning, land acquisition, and everything else associated with that; environmental activities on the shore, cleanup or remediation, ranges, and things like that are also part of our mission; the whole public works function for the buildings that the Navy owns. There are over, I think it is, 2 million acres and well over 100,000 buildings and structures of interest on the shore that we manage or support in various ways. Of course the construction of that over the last roughly 125 years has been handled by NAVFAC or its predecessor organization. We also are the parent organization for the CBs and, of course, they have a long and legendary history behind them. Dion Hinchcliffe: (00:02:00) NAVFAC, do you guys supply IT for all of those facilities and the CBs? Anthony Joyce: (00:02:09) We do have systems that support the utilities management, utilities metering, utilities monitoring, energy management, [and] some newer stuff that's associated with smart grids and things like that, so a lot of IoT in that infrastructure. [We] can't forget the buildings and the HVAC controls, some monitoring systems for environmental purposes, [and] various other things that are part of that industrial control environment that surrounds the building. Anthony Joyce: (00:04:52) The digital workplace that we use is the Navy's Navy Marine Corp. intranet, which is a very large network: approximately 0.5 million seats scattered across the United States, covering the Navy and Marine Corp. Approximately 100,000, I think, Marine Corp., so the majority, 3,000 to 4,000, are Navy seats. Of course, NAVFAC doesn't own that. The whole system is an outsourced contract. Rather, system is not the right term. It's a services contract that provides us with our desktops, and our desktops are fully managed under that construct, are secured, [and] are appropriately detailed. One of the things that one of my teams does in my organization is ensure that we have the desktop software that people need and ensure that it is adequately tested, secured, and suitable for use on the desktops within this environment. Michael Krigsman: (00:28:36) What are the key IT related, technology related challenges that you see coming down the pike? Anthony Joyce: (00:28:48) One of the challenges is certainly the data management and analytics, making that easier, making ad hoc querying effective. The whole arena of unstructured data and unstructured data management also is key because a large part of what we do and a lot of our data is captured inside contract documents or various reports, financial documents and such. Even in this day and age, the government exists largely off of paper. A large part of the auditing is to ensure that the business processes also have the key supporting documentation. As part of the independent audit team, they've been going out and looking for documentation about the building that may be 20-, 30-, or 40-years-old to determine that the air conditioning system was properly acquired and the building was properly constructed or things like this. (00:29:59) There is, I think, an awful lot of opportunity in finally getting data out of the paper, which I am still not too sure that I have seen too many successful technologies that do it because most of them require manual metadata collection. How do we automate that metadata? How do we discover the patterns between different types of documents? If I can pull the document out of the file, is that a maintenance manual? Is that a contract? Is that something else?

Cracked Driveway Repair in Spring TX - Concrete Contractors

01:20
Cracked Driveway Repair in Spring TX - (866) 588-2096 - Concrete Contractors http://asphaltandpaving.txbizdirectory.com/pavement-repair-services-in-spring-2/ Choosing A Concrete Paving Company There are many factors that can affect the price and outcome of an Concrete paving undertaking,. Choosing the lowest bid is not always the best decision when choosing paving company. The following will help you make an informed decision when choosing a concrte paving company. Inviting, Attractive Appearances The appearance of your concrete driveway creates an impression about your home and way of life. An inviting driveway provides a focal point for passers-by and visitors coming by your home. And an attractive driveway, one with "curb appeal," adds value to your home investment. In fact, home buyers may even prejudge the upkeep and condition of the house based upon the appearance of the driveway: "The condition of the driveway sets the tone for the condition of the home,” real estate agent Amanda Miller told The New York Times. So it is worthwhile to plan your driveway carefully. With asphalt as your material — and attention to design and construction — your driveway will provide years of lasting service and an excellent return on the investment. Quality Control Concrete mixture formula are important to the longivity of your driveway, sidwalks or other projects. Concrete is a composite material composed of aggregate bonded together with a fluid cement which hardens over time. Most use of the term "concrete" refers to Portland cement concrete or to concretes made with other hydraulic cements. An important factor in a driveway or sidewalk is the inclusion of reinforement steel bars. These bars provide extra strength to the concrete and aid in the weight bearing capabilities of a driveway or sidewalk. Consult with your concrete paving contractor to assure that your concrete will provide the surface and performance factors you want. Unfortunately, not all consumers closely monitor their driveway design and construction. Getting multiple bids, if possible, and having the willingness to work with your builder or contractor to control quality will serve you well. How to Hire a Contractor All reputable concrete paving companies and contractors who seek your business in good faith will provide references and phone numbers of satisfied customers. Some firms even maintain a list of recent customers and phone numbers. A few quick calls will help protect your investment. Ask references about qualifications such as contractors' quality of work, attention to details, on-time performance, and ability to finish work completely. These suggestions are the same as recommended by the Better Business Bureau. Here are some other points to consider: Check gates for clearance; know who's responsible for re-hanging them, if necessary. Decide whether you, a plumber, or someone else will raise any water valves or sewer inlets to meet the new asphalt around them. Assign specific responsibilities and make notes. Surface drainage is very important. Make sure your contractor plans and builds adequate surface slopes to produce good drainage. So-called "ponding," or standing water, on or near the driveway, is undesirable. Once you have taken bids and selected the contractor you want, you’re ready for the contract. A construction contract should detail such items as the responsibility for grading work and accuracy, for compacting the subgrade and base, for measuring cpncrete paving thicknesses, for pavement slopes and smoothness, payment schedule, and guarantee of the finished product. It’s important to make sure your contractor has adequate liability insurance. Ask for written proof of it. This directory contains Asphalt and Paving companies throughout Texas. Be sure to exercise your due diligence in choosing a company or contractor. RGF Environmental Group Sneeze Machine The first in a series of studies conducted by Kansas State University has shown that RGF Environmental's Photohyroionization (PHI(TM)) Cell inactivates H1N1 (Swine Flu) or 99+% under controlled laboratory conditions. The study was conducted on stainless steel surfaces and Released jointly from RGF Environmental and Kansas State University. The Guardian Air (PHI(TM) Cell) was created to remove sick building syndrome risk by reducing pollutants in the air, reducing oders, Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs), mold, smoke, and viruses. Creating "Mother Nature's Friendly Cleaners, the Guardian Air produces hydro-peroxides, and super oxide ions and hydroxides. Installed into the building's heating and ventilation system air ducts, the Guardian air uses only light, water, and oxygen to create the hydro-peroxides, and super oxide ions and hydroxides. These will kills airborne surface and viruses along with bacteria, mold odors and VOC's preventing them from spreading. Humans have been breathing these "Friendly" cleaners for thousands of years as they are produced naturally. After the viruses and bacteria are killed, hydrogen and oxygen only remain. There are no chemicals or residue left anywhere. RGF's Guardian Air is effective because it is an aggressive system as compared to other whole home air purification technologies. Other air purification technologies are passive systems. For example, if a visitor sneezes in your living room, the only way most air purifiers will kill the bacteria from the sneeze is if the bacteria by-passes all people and objects in the room, travels to the vent and passes through the air purification system. With the PHI(TM) Cell technology the cleaners are already present in the air and kill the bacteria before it has a chance to be inhaled by another person or attach to a surface. In fact, in a simulated sneeze laboratory test, the Guardian Air was shown to reduce microbials by 78% within 3 feet of a sneeze. America's largest restaurant chains , hotel chains, theme parks, cruise lines, and public schools and hospitals have adopted the PHI(TM) Cell technology as part of the Indoor Air Quality protection plan. Business owners and home owners feel more comfortable knowing that the quality of the air has been improved. Recent inactivation test results for the H1N1 virus or Swine Flu have shown that Guardian Air is a must in the fight against the Virus. Guardian Air has also proven extremely effective against viruses and bacteria including, SARS, Bird Flu, Norwalk, MRSA, E-Coli, and strep.

Without a thoughtful and thorough temperature level control strategy, Your shipping container house can be definitely freezing in chilly environments, or a smoking cigarettes hot box in summer season. * Containers have stiff dimensions. Delivering containers come as standard modules with default height. Length and also size. A private container, develops an unpleasant living or functioning room. With insulation. The habitable rooms is reduced even additionally, leaving you with a long slim box with an overshadowed head space. To make an ample habitable rooms. * Container homes can be a carcinogen is. Why the Navy’s New Destroyer Could Be a Total Game Changer

14:08
Why the Navy’s New Destroyer Could Be a Total Game Changer DDG 51 Flight III destroyers are expected to expand upon a promising new ship-based weapons system technology fire-control system, called Naval Integrated Fire Control – Counter Air, or NIFC-CA. The Navy has now started construction on a first-of-its-kind new surface warfare destroyer armed with improved weapons, advanced sensors and new radar 35-times more sensitive than most current systems, service officials announced. Construction of the first DDG-51 Arleigh Burke-class Flight III Destroyer is part of a sweeping Navy and Pentagon effort to speed up delivery of new warships and expand the surface fleet to 355 ships on an accelerated timeframe. Navy Flight III Destroyers have a host of defining new technologies not included in current ships such as more on-board power to accommodate laser weapons, new engines, improved electronics, fast-upgradeable software and a much more powerful radar. The Flight III Destroyers will be able to see and destroy a much wider range of enemy targets at farther distances. In fact, a new software and hardware enabled ship-based radar and fire control system, called Aegis Baseline 10, will drive a new technical ability for the ship to combine air-warfare and ballistic missile defense into a single system. The AN/SPY-6 radar, also called Air and Missile Defense Radar (AMDR), is engineered to simultaneously locate and discriminate multiple tracks. This means that the ship can succeed in more quickly detecting both approaching enemy drones, helicopters and low flying aircraft as well as incoming ballistic missiles. The Raytheon-built AN/SPY-6(V) radar is reported by developers to be 35-times more powerful than existing ship-based radar systems; the technology is widely regarded as being able to detect objects twice as far away at one-half the size of current tracking radar. The farther away ship commanders can see approaching threats, across the spectrum of potential attack weapons, the faster they are able to make time-sensitive decisions about which elements of a ship’s layered defense systems should be used. The AN/SPY-6 platform will enable next-generation Flight III DDG 51s to defend much larger areas compared with the AN/SPY-1D radar on existing destroyers. In total, the Navy plans as many as 22 Flight III DDG 51 destroyers, according to a previously completed Navy capabilities development document. The AN/SPY-6 is being engineered to be easily repairable with replaceable parts, fewer circuit boards and cheaper components than previous radars, according to Raytheon developers; the AMDR is also designed to rely heavily on software innovations, something which reduces the need for different spare parts, Navy program managers have announced. Service officials say the new ship uses newly integrated hardware and software with common interfaces will enable continued modernization in future years. Called TI 16 (Technical Integration), the added components are engineered to give Aegis Baseline 10 additional flexibility should it integrate new systems such as emerging electronic warfare or laser weapons. Earlier this year, the ship’s program manager Capt. Casey Moton said that special technological adaptations are being built into the new, larger radar system so that it can be sufficiently cooled and powered up with enough electricity. The AMDR will be run by 1000-volts of DC power. The DDG Flight III’s will also be built with the same Rolls Royce power turbine engineered for the DDG 1000, yet designed with some special fuel-efficiency enhancements, according to Navy information. The AMDR is equipped with specially configured cooling technology. The Navy has been developing a new 300-ton AC cooling plant slated to replace the existing 200-ton AC plant, Moton said. Before becoming operational, the new cooling plant will need to have completed environmental testing which will assess how the unit is able to tolerate vibration, noise and shocks such as those generated by an underwater explosion, service officials said. DDG 51 Flight III destroyers are expected to expand upon a promising new ship-based weapons system technology fire-control system, called Naval Integrated Fire Control – Counter Air, or NIFC-CA. The technology, which has already been deployed, enables ship-based radar to connect with an airborne sensor platform to detect approaching enemy anti-ship cruise missiles from beyond the horizon and, if needed, launch an SM-6 missile to intercept and destroy the incoming threat, Navy officials said. Navy developers say NIFC-CA presents the ability to extend the range of attack missiles and extend the reach of sensors by netting different sensors from different platforms -- both sea-based and air-based together into one fire control system.

TIMELAPSE - Dismantling the 1953 Marsa Power Station

01:18
Enemalta plc contractors have recently completed the dismantling and demolition of the Marsa Power Station, paving the way for the long-awaited regeneration of this inner Grand Harbour area. After the last two chimneys of this power station were pulled down in December, the few remaining structures on site, including one of the turbine halls and several fuel tanks, were removed during the last few months, to complete the project on schedule a few weeks ago. The site has now been cleared of all electricity generation equipment and buildings, down to ground level. During the next few weeks, Enemalta will launch technical tests of the underground foundations of the structures. These studies will provide data required for the planning of the site’s future use as well as any ground decontamination processes that may be necessary. The dismantling and demolition of the 1953 Marsa Power Station included the gradual removal of the power station’s eight heavy fuel oil-fired units, and several other related structures, as soon as they were no longer required for electricity generation or as emergency capacity on cold standby. The dismantling works started in October 2014, a few months before the power station was switched off for the last time in March of the following year. The demolition gathered pace in the beginning of 2017, when the new Delimara 4 Power Station was commissioned and the last remaining Marsa Power Station units on cold standby were disconnected from the national grid. The demolition contractors removed over 12,000 tonnes of concrete and other building materials from the power station site. Another 17,000 tonnes of metals, including steel, copper and aluminium, and 320 tonnes of electricity cables were exported for recycling. All materials were separated on site and carted away in line with strict waste management procedures. Dust abatement and other pollution control measures were in place to safeguard the wellbeing of residents and workers in the area during the entire process. The oldest parts of the Marsa Power Station, known as the A Station, including underground tunnels beneath Jesuits Hill, will be retained due to their historic significance. These tunnels are being carefully used by Enemalta and Streamcast Technologies to house a number of international data centres. The tunnels are suited for this kind of development due to their security and stable, low temperatures. At the same time, data centre equipment installations do not require any structural modifications to the historic structures. The first of these data centres was inaugurated earlier this year. A standalone diesel generator installed at the Marsa Power Station in 1990 for emergency use will remain on site while the Company concludes technical plans for its relocation to Delimara Power Station, next to other similar generators currently in use. Ing. Fredrick Azzopardi, Enemalta plc Chairman, explained that the dismantling of the Marsa Power Station opens up promising opportunities for Marsa and for the inner Grand Harbour area. “Whilst the technical tests on site are underway, we will also be drafting plans for the future use of this 66,500 metre squared site. This planning process will involve the participation of all stakeholders concerned, including the residents of Marsa. This community has been waiting to witness the end of the Marsa Power Station’s environmental difficulties for decades. By the beginning of 2019, Enemalta will be in a position to announce proposals for the site’s regeneration, in line with the planning policies of this region.” For more information or for assistance from Enemalta plc, visit www.enemalta.com.mt or link up with the Company’s Facebook page www.fb.me/eneplc.

Low Impact Construction for Living Landscapes

01:16:21
This Webinar Presented as part of ELA "A Focus on Sustainability" series on March 25, 2015. www.ecolandscaping.org Doug Nachtigall’s presentation features low-impact construction techniques to minimize the negative impacts of landscape construction. With the right equipment and approach, landscape projects can be accomplished with minimal waste and ecological damage. With careful planning, landscapes can utilize nearly 90% reused material. Specialized equipment (such as flotation tires, conveyors, and on-site soil/aggregate screening) is available to tread lightly on the land during construction to minimize soil compaction. This presentation will introduce participants to these low impact construction methods in hopes that they become part of every eco-designer’s and builder’s repertoire and become standard methods for developing and planning living projects. Workshop on Integrated Process Planning and Scheduling for Industrialising Construction

01:59
Workshop URL: www.DfMA-Workshop.tech Register on: eventbrite.DfMA-Workshop.tech This multidisciplinary workshop will investigate a new Planning and Scheduling (P&S) challenge within industrialising construction (Design, Manufacture and Assembly) by bringing together leading experts from academia and industry active in the field of civil engineering and computer science (with focus on P&S construction projects). The construction sector experiences a pattern change from building components on-site to prefabricating them in a factory environment. This shift towards prefabrication allows multiple activities to be performed concurrently off-site, where the same activities were previously required to have start-to-finish relationships on-site. Some benefits of prefabrication include cost savings, schedule acceleration, improved quality and safer work environments. Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) is a simultaneous design and engineering approach where components are manufactured and sub-assembled or assembled in a factory or warehouse, before being delivered to a construction site for installation. This new construction strategy underlines the need for applying and developing advanced P&S techniques to have efficient and integrated project delivery methods. This workshop will therefore explore the most recent P&S methods to integrate and optimise operational plans in large construction projects using DfMA techniques.

Green Industry Rant - We Are Professionals

22:45
Here in Knoxville, landscape regulations are being proposed for new developments being constructed. Out of town developers have been installing landscaping at substandard levels leaving us, the maintenance contractor, looking like the bad guy when the plants and plans fail. The majority of issues we run into as maintenance contractors relates to improper planting, poor soil, and poor plant quality. Other cities in TN and across the USA have an on staff city Horticulturalist or Landscape architect with a team of people to enforce installation "codes" in order for developer bonds to be released. Not only does this protect the maintenance contractor, it also leads to the success of the development which in turn improves the local economy. We in the green industry play a bigger part in local economies than we're given credit for. We deserve credit for our economic impact and environmental impact. Its regulations like these proposed that protect us from being "yard boys." And that applies to the "mow 10 lawns after work" guy all the way to the big companies like Brickman and Valleycrest.

Dismantling the 1953 Marsa Power Station

07:32

And the Department of Homeland Security is threatening to use eminent domain to seize the land. The National Butterfly Center's land will be cut in two by the border wall—70 percent of the preserve will become contiguous with Mexico and difficult to access. The government is also planning to establish a "control zone" for monitoring illegal entrants, which will mean clearing up to 200 yards of vegetation, specifically planted to host butterflies, on the river side of the wall. That land could be taken through eminent domain. "The border wall is doing what General Santa Anna couldn't do 150 years ago," says Trevino-Wright. "He couldn't push the border of Mexico north of the Rio Grande River, and that is what the border wall is doing." Trevino-Wright says NABA's property rights are being trampled in other ways as well. Federal immigration law gives the agency the authority to search and patrol private property within 25 miles of the border without obtaining a warrant. "They drag tires, they have drones and helicopters, they have agents on foot, on bicycle, on dirt bike, on horse, on four-wheeler, in SUVs, on boat on our shores," she says. "Every kind of presence you can imagine." The government doesn't have the authority to enter and alter private property in preparation for the border wall, but Trevino-Wright says that she encountered a group of government contractors on the Butterfly Center's property clearing foliage that had been planted to host butterflies. When she asked them what they were doing there, she was told a representative from U.S. Border Patrol would contact her. A few days later Manuel Padilla, who's the chief border patrol agent for the Rio Grande Valley, paid the Butterfly Center a visit. "He showed up unannounced, in plain clothes, and his attache, and a uniformed border agent," says Trevino-Wright. Padilla presented plans for the border wall to Trevino-Wright, and according to her account, said the contractors would be back. This time he was accompanied by a "green uniformed presence." NABA decided to take legal action, suing the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection on the grounds they have exceeded their authority. "You know, private property is supposed to be for the owner and their enjoyment and use and purpose," Trevino-Wright says. "Well, we don't enjoy that here. Our land, according to Border Patrol, is theirs to do with as they please." Video produced, shot, and edited by Mark McDaniel. Well that was hers She said it was just some hoax that she made up To watch people cry Yeah she whispered to me softly Well do you want me? Just how I am? Do you need me? Where I stand Let's go steady Let's make a plan Marinade on that for a while Yeah She wanted to die by a river She wanted the tide to come up and drag her away So that when she's dreamin' She can watch the tree line fall away She used to draw rainbow faces in the sand But the rainbow made the face sad Had bits of foam coming out the bottom of its mouth It's kinda funny that way Oh do you want me? How I am? Do you need me? Oh where I stand Let's go steady Let's make a plan Marinade on that for a little while Yeah
