What are the common skin allergies? - Dr. Sachith Abraham

01:41
The common skin allergies, I divide them into 2 categories, one is drug induced allergies and the other is environmentally related or pollen related, dust related or dust mite related allergies. Dust mite related allergies, the common symptom on the skin is atopic eczema or airborne contact dermatitis. In these are the common allergies which the people see and this comes usually in 2 seasons, once in summer and once in winter these can cause severe itching reactions or eczematous reaction. These are environmental allergens that can cause the allergies. The other common cause for allergies from environmental factors are allergy to certain metals or dyes or pollen or chemicals or certain creams which contain some chemicals called as parabens. These cause external allergic reactions. Drug allergies are another manifest sometimes as fixed drug eruption or drug induced maculopapular rash or sometimes the more serious Steven’s Johnson’s syndrome or the most common toxic epidermal necrolysis. So these are the common skin allergies.
Allergies, Antibiotics & The Immune System w/ Dr. Leo Galland

Episode #136: Leo Galland, MD – The Allergy Solution: learn the top ways to uncover hidden allergies and how to rebalance your immune system. ➢ Dr. Galland's New book http://amzn.to/1VUDNSs ➢ Listen to the Audio in iTunes: http://highintensityhealth.com/itunes The big take-home from this interview and new book, The Allergy Solution, is that our environment has changed. We talked about new research that shows how environmental toxins may actually be causing plants to produce more allergens. Even more, environmental compounds may be causing your immune system to be increasingly susceptible to allergens. So, it’s a vicious cycle. Dr. Galland says the solution is not to suppress allergies with natural compounds, but to remove the triggers and also the prime protective T-regulatory cells. T-regulatory cells help keep inflammation in check. Hear about the top five ways you can give your T-regulatory cells and immune system a boost. --------------------------------------Lets Connect---------------------------------- ● Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MikeMutzelMS ● Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/metabolic_mike --------------------------------------Key Takeaways---------------------------------- 05:02 A New View of Allergies  At the beginning of the century, hardly anyone had allergies. In the US, at least 30% of people suffer from allergies. US government data indicates that over half of Americans will experience an allergic reaction during their lifetime. 12:50: Pollution Makes Pollen More Allergenic   Outdoor air pollution increases the allergenicity of the world in which we live. The US department of agriculture planted ragweed in the inner city of Baltimore, in the suburbs and in the countryside 40 miles away. The inner city urban ragweed plants grew twice as big as the rural plants and produced five times the amount of pollen. 20:45: Antibiotic soaps and Food Allergies When your skin touches Triclosan, the antibiotic soap, it is absorbed and travels throughout your body. Researchers measured the level of Triclosan in nasal secretions. Fifty percent of the people tested, had Triclosan in their nose. Triclosan is supposed to be antibacterial, but it changes the microbiome in the nose to increase the ability of dangerous staph bacteria to attach to human cells. If you have Triclosan in your nose, you have a greater amount of staph in your nose. It is a major cause of sinus infection and staph releases and secretes proteins called super antigens. If you are making them in your nose, they are in the mucus and you are swallowing them. Super antigens screw up your immune system. They inactivate a group of white blood cells called regulatory T-cells or T-regs. T-regs keep your immune system from over-reacting. People with allergies have defective T-reg cells. Studies done in Europe show that people who have nasal polyps, associated with chronic nasal allergies, inflammation and sinus infections, have a very high rate of food allergy. Study participants were more allergic to food than to environmental allergens. Nasal polyps are associated with staph. A study measured the amount of Triclosan in children’s urine. There was a direct relationship between the level of Triclosan in the urine and the likely hood that the children would have allergies. 26:48 The Microbiome: A lack of diversity of microbes in your gut, in your respiratory tract, and in your nasal mucosa is highly associated with allergy. The micobiome or fungal part of the microbiome is now being explored. As our microbial diversity is shrinking, the fungal organisms are taking over. The microbes living in our bodies have a profound affect upon your immune system. Two thirds of your immune system is located in your gut. The gut is the training center for your immune system. The lymphocytes in your gut circulate throughout your body and communicate information, returning to the gut. The gut is where the immune system gets most of its information. Antibacterials, antibiotics, herbicides and pesticides kill bacteria. Glyphosate (in Roundup) is in Roundup Ready GMO foods, because the plants have been designed to resist its effects. Glyphosate is an antibiotic. When chickens eat food containing glyphosate, their gut bacteria is screwed up and it encourages the growth of harmful bacteria.

Acid reflux and allergies. Acid Reflux caused by Allergy? Possible. Dr. Veronica Waks talks how environmental allergies can contribute to GERD or Acid Reflux. Environmental allergies may cause inflammation of nasal passages and sinuses become swollen and produce more mucus. Mucus and allergen could be swallowed into your stomach and cause inflammation there. inflamed stomach tend to produce less HCL (HydroChloric Acid), that may contribute to GERD (acid reflux) or Heartburn. How Allergies Work Animation - Why Allergic Reactions Occur Video - Symptoms Sneezing Treatment

02:27
Allergies: Allergens like pollen are nothing more than foreign plant antigens. The stimulus for sneezing gets triggered when allergens first enter the nasal tissue. Pollen allergens encounter the plasma cells in the nose, which respond by producing antibodies. These antibodies attach to mast cells, which are white blood cells containing the chemical histamine. As more antibodies are produced, they cause the mast cells to release histamine. Histamine then produces allergy symptoms. A stuffy and runny nose, sneezing and watery eyes help to remove the invading pollen. Medications called antihistamines may be used to help alleviate severe allergy symptoms. Music Source: Is That You or Are You You by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://chriszabriskie.com/reappear/ Artist: http://chriszabriskie.com/ Heredity, environmental conditions, number and type of exposures and emotional factors can indicate a predisposition to allergies. Allergies often bring to mind sneezing, a runny nose or watery eyes. While these are symptoms of some types of allergic disease, it’s important to understand that an allergic reaction is actually a result of a chain reaction that begins in your genes and is expressed by your immune system. What is happening inside your body when you have an allergic reaction? The Immune System Your immune system controls how your body defends itself. For instance, if you have an allergy to pollen, your immune system identifies pollen as an invader or allergen. Your immune system overreacts by producing antibodies called Immunoglobulin E (IgE). These antibodies travel to cells that release chemicals, causing an allergic reaction. This reaction usually causes symptoms in the nose, lungs, throat, sinuses, ears, lining of the stomach or on the skin. Each type of IgE has specific "radar" for each type of allergen. That's why some people are only allergic to cat dander (they only have the IgE antibodies specific to cat dander); while others have allergic reactions to multiple allergens because they have many more types of IgE antibodies. An allergy is a reaction by your immune system to something that does not bother most other people. People who have allergies often are sensitive to more than one thing. Substances that often cause reactions are Pollen Dust mites Mold spores Pet dander Food Insect stings Medicines Normally, your immune system fights germs. It is your body's defense system. In most allergic reactions, however, it is responding to a false alarm. Genes and the environment probably both play a role. Allergies can cause a variety of symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, itching, rashes, swelling, or asthma. Allergies can range from minor to severe. Anaphylaxis is a severe reaction that can be life-threatening. Doctors use skin and blood tests to diagnose allergies. Treatments include medicines, allergy shots, and avoiding the substances that cause the reactions. Allergies An allergy is an immune response or reaction to substances that are usually not harmful. Causes Allergies are very common. Both genes and environment play a role. If both your parents have allergies, there is a good chance that you have them, too. The immune system normally protects the body against harmful substances, such as bacteria and viruses. It also reacts to foreign substances called allergens. These are usually harmless and in most people do not cause a problem. Allergic reactions In a person with allergies, the immune response is oversensitive. When it recognizes an allergen, the immune system launches a response. Chemicals such as histamines are released. These chemicals cause allergy symptoms. Allergic reaction can be provoked by skin contact with poison plants, chemicals and animal scratches, as well as by insect stings. Ingesting or inhaling substances like pollen, animal dander, molds and mildew, dust, nuts and shellfish, may also cause allergic reaction. Medications such as penicillin and other antibiotics are also to be taken with care, to assure an allergic reflex is not triggered. The immune system normally responds to harmful substances such as bacteria, viruses and toxins by producing symptoms such as runny nose and congestion, post-nasal drip and sore throat, and itchy ears and eyes. An allergic reaction can produce the same symptoms in response to substances that are generally harmless, like dust, dander or pollen. The sensitized immune system produces antibodies to these allergens, which cause chemicals called histamines to be released into the bloodstream, causing itching, swelling of affected tissues, mucus production, hives, rashes, and other symptoms. Symptoms vary in severity from person to person.

COPD - Indoor Allergens & Pollutants

03:32
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, also known as COPD, refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. It includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis and in some cases asthma. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute reports that COPD is the third leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more than 120,000 American lives each year. More than 12 million have been diagnosed with the condition, but another 12 million are likely to have COPD and don't know it. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “In the United States, tobacco smoke is a key factor in the development and progression of COPD, although exposure to air pollutants in the home and workplace, genetic factors, and respiratory infections also play a role.” In addition to avoiding tobacco smoke, many properties have conditions or indoor air quality pollutants, irritants and allergens that may aggravate COPD in people with the condition. These may include: • Dust Mites • Pet Dander • Mold & Bacteria • Pollen • Scented Soaps, Shampoos & Perfumes • Fumes from Cleaning & Other Chemicals • Dry Cleaning Chemicals • Smoke from Fireplaces & Wood Stoves • Dusty Conditions • Dirty HVAC Ducts • Dirty Carpeting • Outdoor Pollution that Infiltrates a Property Identifying the presence of any of these in a home or work environment could help people with COPD avoid exposure, detect substances and conditions that could be removed or mitigated from their indoor environment and manage their condition. These are just a few things to know about how some allergens and indoor air quality pollutants may impact those with COPD. How to Treat Seasonal Allergies in Cats | Cat Allergies: Symptoms, Causes, Treatments

05:27
Allergy season can be hard on our feline friends. Pollen, dust, mold, and other common allergens can be tough to handle for both cats and homeowners. The best treatment for feline allergies is simply to avoid all points of contact between your pet and the causes of their allergies. You may need to keep a watchful eye on pollen counts in your city and be especially mindful about tracking pollens into your house. If your cat escapes for a stroll through the neighborhood, you may want to rinse off any pollen they may have trapped in their fur. If itching and inflammation is very bad this season, you may want to consider changes in diet alongside medications like antihistamines, cyclosporine or corticosteroids. How Allergies Work Animation. Understanding Allergic Reaction Immune System Video. Symptom Treatment

01:06
Allergens like pollen are nothing more than foreign plant antigens. What Is an Allergy? It's what happens when your immune system reacts to something that’s usually harmless. Those triggers, which doctors call "allergens," can include pollen, mold, and animal dander, certain foods, or things that irritate your skin. Allergies are very common. At least 1 in 5 Americans has one. What Happens During an Allergic Reaction? It starts when you come into contact with a trigger that you inhale, swallow, or get on your skin. In response, your body starts to make a protein called IgE, which grabs onto the allergen. Then histamine and other chemicals get released into the blood. That causes the symptoms you notice. What Are the Symptoms? Your symptoms depend on how you’re exposed -- through the air, your skin, food, or through an insect sting. If you’ve got a nasal or skin allergy, common symptoms include: Itchy, watery eyes Sneezing Itchy, runny nose Rashes Feeling tired or ill Hives (a rash with raised red patches) Food allergies can also cause stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. If an insect sting was the trigger, you’ll have swelling, redness, and pain where it stung you. Symptoms can range from mild to severe. Most go away shortly after the exposure stops. Mild ones may be almost unnoticeable. You might just feel a little “off.” Moderate symptoms can make you feel ill, as if you’ve got a cold or even the flu. Severe allergic reactions are extreme. Is It Anaphylaxis? The most severe allergic reaction is called anaphylaxis. It affects your whole body. Symptoms can include: Hives and itching all over Wheezing or shortness of breath Hoarseness or tightness in the throat Tingling in the hands, feet, lips, or scalp Anaphylaxis is life-threatening, so call 911 right away. If you have an epinephrine auto-injector, use it and repeat after 5 to 15 minutes if your symptoms haven’t improved. You’ll still need medical care right after you give yourself the shots, even if your symptoms seem to stop, because a delayed reaction could still happen. Allergies, also known as allergic diseases, are a number of conditions caused by hypersensitivity of the immune system to something in the environment that usually causes little or no problem in most people. These diseases include hay fever, food allergies, atopic dermatitis, allergic asthma, and anaphylaxis. Symptoms may include red eyes, an itchy rash, sneezing, a runny nose, shortness of breath, or swelling. Food intolerances and food poisoning are separate conditions. Common allergens include pollen and certain food. Metals and other substances may also cause problems. Food, insect stings, and medications are common causes of severe reactions. Their development is due to both genetic and environmental factors. The underlying mechanism involves immunoglobulin E antibodies (IgE), part of the body's immune system, binding to an allergen and then to a receptor on mast cells or basophils where it triggers the release of inflammatory chemicals such as histamine. Diagnosis is typically based on a person's medical history. Further testing of the skin or blood may be useful in certain cases. Positive tests, however, may not mean there is a significant allergy to the substance in question. Early exposure to potential allergens may be protective. Treatments for allergies include avoiding known allergens and the use of medications such as steroids and antihistamines. In severe reactions injectable adrenaline (epinephrine) is recommended. Allergen immunotherapy, which gradually exposes people to larger and larger amounts of allergen, is useful for some types of allergies such as hay fever and reactions to insect bites. Its use in food allergies is unclear. Allergies are common. In the developed world, about 20% of people are affected by allergic rhinitis, about 6% of people have at least one food allergy, and about 20% have atopic dermatitis at some point in time. Depending on the country about 1–18% of people have asthma. Anaphylaxis occurs in between 0.05–2% of people. Rates of many allergic diseases appear to be increasing. The word "allergy" was first used by Clemens von Pirquet in 1906.

Scientists discover what triggers allergic reactions to cats

01:13
Originally published on July 25, 2013 Scientists in the UK have discovered how allergic reactions to cats are triggered. A research team from the University of Cambridge discovered that the Fel d 1 protein found in cat dander is the most common cause of severe allergic reactions to cats. Cat dander is microscopic pieces of dry skin cells, which are often accompanied by dried saliva from grooming. It was also discovered that when environmental bacterial toxin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is present, it intensifies the body's inflammatory response to the cat protein Fel d 1. The scientists also identified the part of the immune system that recognises the LPS contaminated Fel d 1 is the pathogen recognition receptor Toll-like receptor 4, an important protein in the activation of the innate immune system. They used a drug to inhibit the TLR4 response which then blocked the effects of the cat dander protein on human cells and thereby preventing an inflammatory response. The research is expected to lead to new and improved treatments for cat and possibly dog allergy sufferers. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. EYE ALLERGY Symptoms, Causes & Treatments

05:05
EYE ALLERGY Symptoms, Causes & Treatments OVERVIEW The eyes are the windows to the soul because they reflect our state of mind. This certainly can't be true if our eyes are red, swollen, watery, and itchy from an allergic reaction. Severe allergic eye symptoms can be very distressing and are a common reason for visits to the allergist, ophthalmologist, and even the emergency room. Occasionally, severe eye allergies cause serious damage that can threaten eyesight. SYMPTOMES Typical symptoms associated with eye allergies include inflammation of the conjunctiva that is caused by a reaction to allergens. The inflammation causes enlargement of the blood vessels in the conjunctiva ("congestion"), resulting in a red or bloodshot appearance of the eyes. These allergy symptoms can range from very mild redness to severe swelling associated with discharge. CAUSES Eye allergies usually are associated with other allergic conditions, particularly hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and atopic eczema (dermatitis). The causes of eye allergies are similar to those of allergic asthma and hay fever. Medications and cosmetics can play a significant role in causing eye allergies. Reactions to eye irritants and other eye conditions (for example, infections such as pink eye) are often confused with eye allergy. Any kind of irritant, whether environmental, infectious, or manmade, can cause symptoms consistent with eye allergies. TREATMENTS The best way to treat an eye allergy is to avoid the allergen that is causing it. However, this isn’t always possible, especially if you have seasonal allergies. Luckily, there are numerous different treatments that can relieve eye allergy symptoms. Medications Certain oral medications can help alleviate eye allergies, especially when other allergy symptoms are present. These medications include: • antihistamines, such as loratadine or diphenhydramine. • Decongestants, such as pseudoephedrine or oxymetazoline. • Steroids, such as prednisone. Allergy Shots Allergy shots may be recommended if symptoms don’t improve with medication. Allergy shots are a form of immunotherapy that involves a series of injections of the allergen. The amount of allergen in the shot steadily increases over time. The allergy shots modify your body’s response to the allergen, which helps reduce the severity of your allergic reactions. Eyedrops Many different types of prescription and over-the-counter eyedrops are available to treat eye allergies. Eyedrops frequently prescribed for eye allergies contain olopatadine hydrochloride, an ingredient that can effectively relieve symptoms associated with an allergic reaction. Such eyedrops are available under the brand names Pataday and Patanol. Over-the-counter options include lubricating eyedrops, such as "artificial tears," which can help wash allergens from the eyes. Other eyedrops have antihistamine or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medications. Some eyedrops must be used every day, while others can be used as needed to relieve symptoms. Eyedrops may cause burning or stinging at first. Any unpleasantness usually resolves within a few minutes. Some eyedrops may cause side effects, such as irritation. It’s important to ask your doctor which over-the-counter eyedrops work best before selecting a brand on your own. Natural Remedies Several natural remedies have been used to treat eye allergies with varying degrees of success, including allium cepa (made from red onion), euphorbium, and galphimia. Make sure to contact your doctor about the safety and effectiveness of these remedies before you try them. A cool, moist washcloth may also provide relief for people with eye allergies. You can try placing the washcloth over closed eyes several times a day. This can help alleviate dryness as well as irritation. However, it’s important to note that this method doesn’t directly treat the underlying cause of the allergic reaction.

Cat Allergens & Your Indoor Environment

03:55
According to many estimates, there are over 80 million cats in the United States and approximately one third of U.S. households have a pet cat. While more households are believed to have a dog, the total number of actual cats is thought to be greater than the dog population. Sadly, one of the major reasons people give up their pet cat is due to allergies. While millions of people suffer from allergies, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America reports that as many as 30% of people with allergies have allergic reactions to cats and dogs and cat allergies appear to be about twice as common as dog allergies. Cat allergens could even trigger an asthma attack in some people with the condition. Cat allergens are primarily found in dander, saliva and urine. A cat’s fur is not generally the culprit, although it can collect dander, saliva and urine or other common allergens such as pollen, dust mites or mold. Cat dander happens to be one of the smaller common allergens. This means it can remain airborne for an extended period of time and eventually settle throughout a large area within a home. Cat allergy symptoms vary from person to person, but common symptoms may include: • Stuffy nose, sneezing and nasal congestion • Coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath • Inflamed or watery eyes • Skin rash There are medical tests to help determine if someone has a cat allergy and there are also services available to test for the presence of cat allergens indoors. There are also simple steps that cat owners with allergies can take to reduce the presence of allergens and their exposure. They include the following: • Bathe cats on a regular basis and brush the cat outdoors • Keep cats out of bedrooms and especially out of people’s beds • Wash hands after touching a cat • Vacuum with a high-efficiency unit and consider flooring options other than carpet that can easily collect allergens • Clean and dust on a regular basis, but try not to aerosolize the allergens • Use a HEPA air cleaner These are just a few things to know about cat allergens and what can be done to minimize allergy symptoms. Causes of nickel skin allergies | Dr Teresa Tsakok

12:15
Dr Tsakok presents her research on the genetic factors driving allergic disease. Allergic disease has been increasing globally for the last few decades, with now around 30% of adults suffering some kind of allergy. Nickel allergy is among the commonest causes of allergic contact dermatitis, or contact allergy, where the skin reacts to a usually harmless substance. Nickel allergy is often associated with common items such as jewelry, zips and glasses frames. While the hygiene hypothesis - an environmental cause - is often cited as the reason for increasing levels of allergies, Dr Tsakok's research investigates the potential genetic drivers of allergic disease. By using large cohort twin studies, including whole genome sequencing, patch testing and metabolics, her work aims to estimate the heritability of delayed nickel sensitivity, or contact dermatitis. By identifying common genetic variants - single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs - associated with allergies, this work looks to provide future insights into the biochemical mechanisms of allergy and potentially how to prevent it. Dr Teresa Tsakok is an Academic Clinical Fellow at Guys and St Thomas's Foundation Trust. Dr Teresa Tsakok gave this short research presentation, 'The BRC Allergene Project: Heritability of nickel allergy and genetic determinants', at the finals of the Oral Plenary Competition at the Spring Meeting for Clinician Scientists in Training 2013. Summer Allergies

03:53
Many people associate allergies with spring, but allergies can be a problem for people any month of the year and the summer season is no exception. Summer allergies can be caused by seasonal outdoor culprits or due to the presence of indoor allergens. Two of the most common causes of summer allergies are due to the presence of pollen and mold. Depending on where you live, you may be exposed to a variety of different pollens. Generally speaking, trees usually pollinate during spring, but grasses and weeds can still cause pollen allergies throughout the summer months. High levels of airborne mold spores are a common occurrence during the summer months. Outdoors, warm and moist conditions can be conducive for elevated mold spore counts which can be an issue for people working or enjoying the outdoors. These same spores can also make their way indoors through open windows and doors and even on people’s clothes and hair. People who are allergic to mold should also inspect their home for the possible presence of mold growing indoors. Mold can grow quickly on many materials found in our homes, schools and offices when temperatures are warm and moisture is present. Any part of a building that has suffered water damage or elevated humidity levels could be the source of indoor mold growth. Even mold growing in a crawl space, basement, attic or in a wall cavity can cause indoor air quality problems. Dust mites are another common indoor allergen during the summer months. These tiny creatures thrive during this time of year due to the warm and humid conditions. Even certain fruits and vegetables people enjoy during the summer months can cause an allergic reaction. Oral allergy syndrome, also referred to as pollen-food syndrome, occurs when proteins from these foods cross-react with pollen. The presence of ground level ozone in many areas during the hot summer months can also exacerbate allergy symptoms as even relatively low levels of this pollutant can cause health effects in sensitive individuals. These are just a few things to know about summer allergies and indoor environmental quality. To learn more about this or other environmental, indoor air quality, occupational, health or safety issues, please visit the websites shown in the video or below. Instant Tips To Get Rid Of Early Morning Sneezing

04:56
Sneezing is a common human problem that may occur due to different reasons. Early morning sneezing is a special kind of a disorder, in which a person starts to sneeze either immediately after waking up or while getting out of the bed. Running nose, itchy eyes and nasal congestion are some of the common symptoms that many people have together with sneezing. Food or Environmental Allergy

00:49
http://exhalenow.com I have many children and adult that come into my clinic and they wonder if they have a certain food allergy. They feel that their mouth itches, their mouth tingles, sometimes their lips swell or they might get hives around their mouth. And this happens when eating certain foods. It may happen with apples, bananas, melons, a cucumber, a whole slew of foods. And many times, we think that this is food allergy. Actually, it’s not food allergy, It’s an allergy to the pollen. So working on our environment and taking care of our pollen allergy can actually help improve our symptoms that we may be having with certain food sensitivities. Exhale is unique technology and a team of compassionate experts who help you solve asthma and allergies in your home. Our founder, Prasanthi Gandhi started this company because she's a mom who has suffered from allergies and asthma her whole life, and now her kids suffer from it too. Prasanthi just wanted them to be able to live in their home feeling healthy – not waking up wheezing at night, or coughing and nasally in the morning – sending her kids off to school on the wrong foot. She didn’t want my kids to be so reliant on sprays, pills, drops and inhalers every day. She started Exhale as a way to give moms like me a tool that gives them information about the air in their home – and an action plan to make their homes better for their family. Exhale helps them take back their lives.
