Creativity in the classroom (in 5 minutes or less!) | Catherine Thimmesh | TEDxUniversityofStThomas

08:09
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Catherine Thimmesh discusses why creativity is an essential tool for today’s students, and how teachers can easily encourage and foster the development of creative thinking skills. Along the way, she dispels some commonly held myths about what creativity is or is not, suggests some concrete prompts that can be used quickly in any classroom, and bemoans the fact that she still doesn’t have a jet pack! Catherine Thimmesh is an award-winning children's book author, currently focusing on creative nonfiction. (Her books include the Sibert medal-winning book "TEAM MOON: How 400,000 people landed Apollo 11 on the Moon"; and most recently, "SCALY SPOTTED FEATHERED FRILLED: How do we know what dinosaurs really looked like?") Catherine will address the topic of Creativity in the Classroom. Shell provide concrete suggestions for fostering creativity that can be used in any classroom and that take five minutes or less to implement, require no prep or monetary resources, and can be put into action immediately. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Gifted & Lit (A Blend of Hip-Hop and Education)

00:39
Hip-Hop has had a tremendous impact on today’s youth. It has influenced buying decisions, career paths, business and overall popular culture. Due to this impact, the Diversion Center has created ‘Gifted and Lit.’ ‘Gifted and Lit’ is an innovative program of Kids Music Videos on DVDs that “uses hip-hop songs for teaching kids lessons in math, science, grammar, and more.” This is a great product to assist you with your parent engagement activities. By far, this is one of the best tools to use at home or in a classroom setting. It will keep kids engaged in the learning process. ‘Gifted and Lit’ DVDs mold modern beats, lyrics, and positive information that is intended to influence children and help them develop a love for education. In addition, ‘Gifted and Lit’ uses age appropriate kids music to make learning fun while promoting international travel, language learning, and positive growth. This program is for parents, teachers, educators, and school systems that are looking for a tool that connects with the children of today. If you want your students to be motivated, inspired, and engaged, ‘Gifted and Lit’ is the program for you.

Our staff includes 1,288 certified teachers and other personnel who support the teachers, including mentors; instructional coaches in literacy, math, bilingual and technology; gifted instruction teachers; bilingual resource teachers and special education teachers at each school site. All of our resource teachers not only support the classroom teachers, but work directly with students during daily math and literacy acceleration blocks in every school. District 54 provides a measurable, standards-based curriculum that expands opportunities for engaged learning for all students. Whether in special education, general education or gifted classes, students are taught by highly trained teachers. All District 54 schools also practice PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports). Teaching social behaviors creates a positive school climate and supports social-emotional learning and our focus on meeting the needs of the whole child. With these supports, student achievement continues to grow. Fraction kits have been around for a while and many effective math teachers use them to help their students gain a stronger grasp of fractions. This video demonstrates my approach to creating a fraction kit and was designed to serve as a follow-along activity. Unlike our animated math lessons, this VLOG will walk you through a hands on, real world math activity that explores fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, number sense, and even as a decimals introduction activity later on. This fun math activity is perfect for homeschool, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, and middle school and even high school as well. The required materials for such math activities include construction paper, markers, scissors, and a ruler. Our lessons are perfect for flipped classroom math teachers and students. This lesson is aligned with the common core learning standards for math and the SAT math curriculum as well. As young educators, we know that all students learn math differently and that a one-size-fits-all approach is simply ineffective. The idea that the ability to understand mathematics is reserved for a select few did not sit well with us. In addition to sharing free teacher resources (which are teacher created resources) in the form of teacher worksheets, we share new YouTube math videos every week that help math teachers and students to better understand mathematics and the common core. Our lessons can be aligned with the common core standards for common core math and are immensely popular with flipped learning educators and anyone experimenting with flipped classroom learning. As educators, we know what it takes to be a super math teacher and that we can’t always do it alone. In addition to our cool math videos, we share articles, blogs, inspirational quotes, teacher math worksheets, and math worksheets. Whether you teach in the flipped classroom, operate in blended education or online blended learning, or are interested in finding cool math online, MashUp Math will have something for you! Many students think of us as a math tutor online or as their on-demand online tutor. Others trust us for all things related to online math education—coming to use when they find themselves thinking “I don’t understand my homework assignment! and need some homework help! It is also a part of our mission to make progressive steps in mathematics education. For one, our content is created with the goal of moving students from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. We also aim to meet the unique needs of ESL math students and support math for girls as well. Many of our users serve as a special education teacher and use our cool videos to support their special education students with special needs. Our free online math lessons are also high adaptable to your homeschool curriculum and should be added to your list of free homeschool resources. We are also very involved in the edtech world and are very popular with Google Classroom educators, Math Games Classroom Educators, and teachers who support the use of iPad for education! So if you could use some help with everyday math and are a student with a unique learning style or learning styles—like Visual Auditory Learning! No matter your school’s standards of learning, our YouTube Math Videos Lessons will work for you! And if you love STEM and Math Education as much as we do, be sure to visit us at this year’s ISTE 2016 EdTech Conference in Denver, CO on June 26-29th! District 54 Peak Moments Slideshow

In such a short amount of time, District 54 staff and students have been able to create some pretty incredible moments! See what we have been doing this year so far! ▶️️ SUBSCRIBE! https://bit.ly/2tsOS4m FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA: ▶ FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/D54schools ▶ INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/SchaumburgD54Schools ▶ TWITTER: twitter.com/D54schools More information ▶ https://sd54.org/ About Schaumburg School District 54 District 54 is the largest elementary school district in the State of Illinois. We serve about 15,000 students from birth through eighth grade in five junior high schools, 21 elementary schools and one school with children from kindergarten through eighth grade and our new early learning center for children ages birth through five who are at-risk or have Individualized Education Plans. We opened the Early Learning Center in 2014 and approved a free, full-day kindergarten program at all of our elementary schools in 2015 to support our youngest learners. Research consistently demonstrates the academic and social-emotional benefits children receive from these programs. We also continue to focus on collaborative learning through Professional Learning Communities. PLCs operate under the assumption that the key to improved learning for students is continuous, job-embedded learning for educators. District 54 is in the top 5 percent of all districts in Illinois, based on the PARCC assessment and the percentage of students who meet and exceed in both math and reading are nearly double the state average. We are able to provide our students with these supports due to our fiscal stability and responsibility. District 54 has had a balanced operating budget for more than 20 years and has been debt free since 2011. District 54 has earned a rating of Aaa, the highest, most prestigious rating from Moody’s Investors Service.
