Effect of Whey Protein on Insulin Whey is one of the two main proteins in milk - the other is casein. Whey, like all proteins, is made up of amino acids, the building blocks of protein. When we consume protein, we then break down these amino acids and use them for muscle growth and tissue repair. Whey contains all three BCAAs along with all of the essential amino acids. Whey is highly insulinogenic - consuming whey leads to a sharp increase in insulin levels. This response does not have to do with blood sugar levels - when a food has a high glycemic index, consuming it will cause a large increase in blood sugar levels. In response to this, the body produces insulin to combat the high blood sugar and allow glucose to enter our cells for energy. This is not what is happening when we consume whey - insulin release is responding to amino acids, not glucose levels. Insulin binds to cells to allow them to take up energy, which can be glucose or amino acids from proteins. The amino acids in whey cause an insulin release. Whey also leads to the release of GIP and GLP-1, two gastrointestinal hormones that also raise insulin levels. This increase in insulin is actually a good thing! Whey is a fast acting protein, and the spike in insulin allows amino acids into the muscle cells to encourage repair, helping us to gain muscle and heal quickly. Consuming whey protein has actually been shown to lower blood glucose levels when consumed during or directly before a meal. A 2005 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that when whey was combined in a high-sugar meal, individuals with type-2 diabetes had a lower blood glucose level following the meal than if no whey was consumed. This is thought to be because the increased insulin aided the body in glucose digestion. Generally, the better the whey, the higher the insulin spike and thus the more effective at delivering building blocks into the cells for the purpose or repair and growth. Best to consume whey directly following exercise. It is quickly broken down and made available to muscle cells for repair post workout. Whey protein isolate contains 90% protein and thus has less lactose, fat and cholesterol than whey protein concentrate. To get the most out of your protein, go for the whey protein isolate. In this video, I wanna start off by breaking down what insulin does in the body. Then I wanna talk about the various forms of diabetes, type one and type two and then I'm gonna give you a breakdown of how the ketogenic diet and insulin plays a role when it comes down to diabetes because it's really important that we have an understanding there. So lets dive in and talk about insulin really quick. So within our pancreas, we have these cells that are known as beta cells and what beta do is they produce insulin as a response to any kind of carbohydrate that our body sees. So basically, when we have glucose that is derived from food that we eat, our beta cells produce these insulin molecules. These insulin molecules flow around through the body, they allow the cell to absorb that glucose. They allow liver cells, muscle cells and fat cells to absorb the glucose to ultimately be used for fuel. So then we take the next step to look at diabetes, we can understand how diabetes and insulin work together. So the first one I wanna talk about is type one diabetes. A type one diabetes is not traditional, type one is a little bit more rare and it is an autoimmune condition. You see, what happens with this autoimmune condition is you body is actually fighting off beta cells. So those beta cells that produce insulin, your body's own immune system is fighting them off and it's making it so that they're not able to produce insulin. That's why a type one diabetic needs to take exogenous insulin to make sure that they're blood sugar doesn't go through the roof from foods that they eat. Here's the other thing, without insulin, the body can start to essentially starve. Because it's not able to see that glucose because the insulin is never allowing the glucose into the cells, the body starts to break down proteins and fats. That's why often times, type one diabetic are a lot more thin that the type two diabetic. It's not the conventional way that we would look at diabetes as just being an issue with overweight people. Then we move in to type two diabetes. Type two diabetes is the more common one and this is sort of the opposite in a sense, it happens on the other end of the spectrum. Our body's cells are liver, our fat, our muscle cells no longer can receive insulin very well or they get desensitized to it. So they get so much insulin at one point in time that they don't respond to it nearly as well, which means that blood glucose ends up staying elevated and therefore, the pancreas tries its best to produce more insulin. Those beta cells try really hard because they see blood sugar rising but they can only do so much. So they try and try and try and eventually become exhausted and sometimes even fully shut down, which gets you to the point where you cannot produce enough insulin to handle the glucose. So you either have to take medications to lower your glucose or you have to take exogenous insulin if it gets too bad. So now lets go into the ketogenic diet and how this works because this is pretty interesting. Now, initially, on the surface, we can look at the ketogenetic diet, the reduction of carbohydrates and how it would reduce our need for insulin because we don't need as much insulin because we don't have as many carbs. So I wanted to look at a couple of studies and I found one that was extremely interesting and this one breaks down the exact effect of the ketogenic diet on type two diabetes. This study was published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research Publications and it took a look at 262 people that had type two diabetes. And what they found was that when they put them on a ketogenic diet, under 30 grams of carbohydrates per day and increased fat intake, that they started to have some pretty remarkable results. What exactly makes these two so dependent on each other? If you dig through a little bit of fat loss research you'll see right away that insulin is very closely connected with burning fat and losing weight. In fact without reducing insulin there is almost no way we can burn a substantial amount of fat no matter how hard we exercise and diet. And even though most people have heard about insulin spikes not being good for weight loss the average person doesn't truly understand why. Well my hope is that today I can explain this in a way that anybody can understand. It all starts with you eating food. When you eat food the chewed up food particles get broken down further in your stomach into very small parts and then they pass through your intestines at which point your body absorbs and breaks down those nutrients and calories again and dumps them into your bloodstream. These broken down nutrients can't just jump into the cells that need them for their daily functions without some help. That's where insulin comes in. Insulin is a hormone secreted by your pancreas and it gets released into your bloodstream when your body senses that blood sugar has increased. Very high blood sugar levels are not good for you and your body knows this. So insulin acts as a bridge between your cells and the sugar found floating around in your blood. Without insulin your blood sugar would be very high because your body wouldn't be able to get that sugar into the cells. This is actually pretty much what type 2 diabetes is. When people are insulin resistant which means that insulin isn't doing its job they usually wind up being labeled as a type 2 diabetic which means that they need an external source of insulin for example either a shot or a pill to get their blood sugar down. So what does all of this have to do with fat loss and weight loss. Well whether you eat pasta brown rice or drink a can of soda all of it will eventually be broken down and it will be blood sugar floating around in your bloodstream. The only difference is that whole high-fiber carbs like brown rice will take a lot longer to digest which means that the sugar will be released into your bloodstream slowly while the can of soda will pretty much be released all at once. When it's released into your bloodstream slowly you give your body a chance to actually use it overtime so you won't require quite as much insulin which leads to less of it being stored as fat. Before insulin starts storing blood glucose into fat cells it will first store as much of it as possible into your liver for later use. The liver can only hold a limited amount of blood sugar and then the excess starts to get dumped off into your muscle cells. Now your muscle cells can hold more of this glucose then your liver can however it also has its limit. By building more muscle you're going to be able to increase this limit and use more of the blood sugar for your muscles rather than storing it as fat, however again even the most muscular person on the planet is going to have a limit of how much of this blood glucose can actually be used by the muscles. Once that limit is reached we hit a point called spillover where the sugar that came from mostly carbohydrates in your diet will begin to be stored in fat cells in order to lower the sugar found in your blood stream to normal levels. So insulin is an anabolic hormone that causes weight gain and growth. The opposite hormone to insulin is a catabolic hormone known as glucagon which is released when blood sugar drops too low. Glucagon just like insulin goes in and acts as a bridge between the stored energy in your cells and your bloodstream. Except it has the inverse effect. So it pulls energy from your cells and dumps it into the bloodstream. Before your body will start pulling fat from fat cells for energy it will first pull that stored glucose from your liver and your muscle cells. This is why so many low carb diets work. When you don't have that many carbs it's easy for your body to use up the carbs stored in your muscles and your liver and then proceed straight to burning fat for energy. This is the same reason why ketogenic diets work. Except an added benefit to ketogenic diets is that your body becomes more efficient at using fat for energy which means more fat will burnt.

For men and women who stay physically active, it might seem incomprehensible that whey protein isn’t the greatest thing since sliced bread. By the way - how many bodybuilders does it take to change a lightbulb? Nine. One to screw in the bulb and the other eight hold up the mirrors. But seriously, aside from bulking up the aesthetic body, whey does some insidious things to the inside of us, and if we were to put our vanity aside and ask if whey was really good for our health the answer is a resounding – NOT SO MUCH! Why? - Whey messes with your gut flora. Those billions of microbes who have taken up residence in your intestines aren’t so happy when they are doused with whey protein shakes. Many people experience gas, bloating, and digestion issues after drinking whey protein. This is usually a hint that your gut bacteria are not happy campers. - Who cares if your biceps are bulging if your face is covered in acne. Whey protein may increase the translocation of liposaccharide from the gut, which can lead to chronic inflammation and aggravation of acne vulgaris. - Whey is a highly processed milk protein which is not a naturally healthy food for our digestive systems, and can cause insulin spikes. We have evolved to eat foods with a low to moderate insulin response from foods like fruits and vegetables. These have a carbohydrate density of around 23%. Whey is considered a insulintrophic food because it can make our insulin levels soar – leading to diabetes and obesity among other diseases. The next time you want to bulk up or just replace protein, try plant-based, real foods instead. Your gut, skin and blood sugar levels will thank you, and so might Mr. Universe.
