Students recall Dr. Seuss’ The Sneetches through an acting engagement activity and sequence the story using images from the text with a partner. Next, students respond to different tier questions using a Socratic Seminar. Students are learning to share ideas, build on to their classmates, and to use talk moves and use the text as reference. Students make connections with their own lives, other texts with similar themes, and with what they have learned about segregation and the Civil Rights Movement. As the students discuss, the teacher acts as a facilitator and keeps the flow of the convsersation. The teacher also keeps track of participants and quotes about their responses.

This is a video you can show to the class to get them ready for Dr.Suess and Rhyming. It goes through the first part of the book and they can get familiar with it. It is also a fun new way to show the book. Also is useful for students that might not have the book to take home, but has a computer.

Here is a clip of a lesson I taught as part of a mini-unit on diversity. The students pictured here are in Kindergarten. We have been using the book, "It's Okay to Be Different" by Todd Parr as an anchor text. Students use key vocabulary such as unique, different, same, diverse, and diversity throughout the lesson to talk about this topic.

The Digital Media and Advanced Technology students at West Point-Beemer High School worked on a project with the West Point Elementary students to celebrate Dr. Seuss week. The video includes all the students of WPES. Each class selected one Dr. Seuss book and then acted out a part of the book in front of the green screen. We were able to chroma key the background and replace it with pictures from the books. There were roughly 30 students that helped produce and film the video.

This is a recording of me, Kathleen Powers, presenting my formal lesson to the 5th grade students in my RLA Internship classroom. Unfortunately, the camera unknowingly shut off two times during the lesson recording resulting in the omission of the "scientist" slideshow and the review of how to summarize a text passage. I hope between the recording and it's accompanying lesson plan document, my entire lesson is clear to it's reviewer.

Vocabulary Lesson Plan for The Grouchy Lady Bug. Connection to prior learning or background building activity: The teacher will gather the students together on the rug. She will introduce the story. She will have the students point out the parts of the book and answer the following questions: Where is the title? Who is the author? What do we predict this story will be about? Activities, resources, and materials to present new content area knowledge or skill: Prior to starting the book the teacher will pre-teach the vocabulary words by following the seven-step process: 1. Say the word in English and in the primary language of the ELL students. (Show the word printed in both languages on a vocabulary card, also show the illustration). 2. State the word in context from the text. (Read the line of text that the word is used). 3. Provide a definition from the dictionary. (Make sure the definition matches the context in the text). 4. Provide another example of the word in student-friendly terms. 5. Have students repeat the word at least 3 times to build a phonological representation of the word. 6. Have students think-pair-share, for example, “think of a time that you were grouchy, turn to a partner and share”. Have the students turn back to the group and call on students to share out. Have ELL Level 2 student share their example of friendly, (prompt and support as needed). Have Level 4 student share their example of insist (support as needed). 7. Say the word again or the whole sentence where it is found. Repeat for each of the 5 words: Grouchy, Lady Bug, Aphid, Insist, Friendly. Activities, resources, and materials to present new language knowledge or skill: Read the Grouchy Lady Bug to the class, stop and identify vocabulary words. Have students practice reading the words. Activities, resources, and materials to assess or review learning of new language, content, and/or skill: Review the vocabulary words have the students answer questions about the word. Check for understanding for each of the five words: for example “say grouchy if you think this might make you grouchy 1. A friend shares their favorite toy with you. 2. You forgot your coat on a cold day. 3. Someone says you smell.” Homework/Extension Activities Take home assignment - Tonight when you go home tell an adult about your day, give them one example of how you were grouchy (or how someone else was grouchy), give one example of how you were friendly (or how you could have been friendly), give one example of something you might insist on. Thank you to Costas for playing all the parts of the students even though you were very sick!
