Vitamin D was discovered in 1920 where its importance in our bodies was realized in discovering a way to cure rickets, a painful bone disease in children (2) 2. Vitamin D fortified foods began within a decade, making rickets rare in the US (2) 3. Vitamins are defined as an essential nutrient that your body cannot produce on its own and must acquire from the diet - Vitamin D is not actually a vitamin, but a hormone, which is a chemical that regulates body physiology. (1) a. Your skin makes vitamin D when exposed to sunlights, so it does not need to acquire it from food if adequate sunlight is available (2) i. The only natural foods that contain vitamin D are fish and egg yolks (2) What Does Vitamin D Do? 1. We are discovering more and more ways that the body utilized vitamin D as time goes on a. Vitamin D receptors, proteins that bind to vitamin D, exists in many of the body’s tissues, including the heart, muscles, endocrine glands, prostate and many others. (2) 2. Bone health - vitamin D is essential for our bodies to be able to absorb calcium. Without enough vitamin D, the body absorbs only 10-15% of dietary calcium, versus 30-40% when our vitamin D levels are normal. How to Get Enough Vitamin D Now that we understand how important vitamin D is in our bodies, and how likely it is that we do not have enough, how do we get more? 1. Sunlight - It can be a good idea to first spend a bit of time in the sun before applying sunscreen a. spend 10-15 minutes three times per week without sunscreen on. This may be enough to prevent deficiencies (5) 2. Fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna and mackerel, and egg yolks (5) 3. Fortified foods: Many foods have been fortified with vitamin D, so look for this at your grocery store. Such foods include some milks, yogurts, orange juices and cereals (2) 4. Mushroom trick: mushrooms are a great source of natural vitamin D a. Exposing mushrooms to sunlight prior to eating them will ramp up their vitamin D levels! So sit them on your window sill or backyard prior to adding them to your food (6) 5. UV Lamps a. They are similar to tanning beds, but not identical. They carry the same skin-cancer risk as the sun or tanning beds, so be careful not to overdo it. These are a great option for those who live where there is little access to direct sunlight (8) 6. Supplementation: Last is supplementation. It is best to obtain some sunlight and concentrate on adding additional vitamin D in your diet. That being said, if you believe you are lacking vitamin D you can always buy supplements. Total recommended intake can vary from about 200 IU to 400 IU per day, including what you get from diet and sunlight. (5) 1. Vitamin D is an extremely important vitamin that has powerful effects on several-systems throughout the body. Unlike most vitamins, vitamin-D actually functions like a hormone, and every single cell in your body has a receptor for it. Your body makes it from cholesterol when your skin is exposed to sunlight. It's also found in certain foods such as fatty fish and fortified dairy products, although it's very difficult to get enough from diet alone. The recommended daily intake is usually around 400-800 IU, but many experts say you should get even more than that. Vitamin-D deficiency is very common. It's estimated that about 1 billion people worldwide have low levels of the vitamin in their blood. Here are 6 signs you may have Vitamin-D deficiency. 1.Bone and Back Pain Vitamin-D is involved in maintaining bone health through a number of mechanisms. For one, it improves your body's absorption of calcium. Bone pain and lower back pain may be signs of inadequate vitamin D levels in the blood. Large observational studies have found a relationship between a deficiency and chronic lower back pain. 2.You Have Gut Trouble Remember, vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means if you have a gastrointestinal condition that affects your ability to absorb fat, you may have lower absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin D as well. This includes gut conditions like Crohn's, celiac and non-celiac gluten sensitivity, and inflammatory bowel disease. 3.Depression A depressed mood may also be a sign of deficiency. On the other hand, most of the controlled trials, which carry more scientific weight than observational studies, didn't show a link between the two Some controlled studies have shown that giving vitamin D to people who are deficient helps improve depression, including seasonal depression that occurs during the colder months. 4.Hair Loss Hair loss is often attributed to stress, which is certainly a common cause. However, when hair loss is severe, it may be the result of a disease or nutrient deficiency. Hair loss in women has been linked to low Vitamin-D levels, although there is very little research on this so far In a case study, topical application of a synthetic form of the vitamin was found to successfully treat hair loss in a young boy with a defect in the Vitamin-D receptor. 5.Bad mood A depression diagnosis is often actually linked to a shortage of vitamin D. It is my theory, that like trees and plants, we can tell the season, by our bodys vitamin D level. In the summer, when food is plentiful, and vitamin D levels are higher, our brain has no worries about getting enough to eat. However, with the shorter days, vitamin D levels drop, signaling the start of winter, and this triggers hibernation mode, and we are supposed to eat and gain weight to survive the winter. Thus, take extra vitamin D as a supplement, and trick your brain into thinking the sun is shining, and no need to start hibernating. As a society, at least where I live, almost everyone I test, is severely vitamin D deficient. We go from an air conditioned house to an air conditioned car, to an air conditioned office. We wear 50SPF sun screen. We don't "play" outside any more. This definitely isn't the only reason for our obesity epidemic, but it may contribute. In a future video, I will go into more detail about vitamin D, and as a teaser, it maybe related to multiple sclerosis as well. It doesn't really exist. But, what I'm finding through a lot of research recently is that Vitamin D3 might be as close as we can get to something that can reduce belly fat as anything that's out there. Let me explain how this works because honestly it's pretty fascinating. What Vitamin D is, first and foremost is a fat soluble Vitamin. It's a fat soluble Vitamin that helps regulate mood, it can help regulate metabolism and most importantly it regulates where calcium goes in the body. But, because it's fat soluble it means that it's stored in the fat cell. Start thinking about this: if you have an excess amount of fat or if you're overweight that means that most of the Vitamin D that you consume, even if you're taking a supplement, is going to get sequestered into those fat cells and it's going to stay there meaning you have less bio actively available Vitamin D3 to do the cool things that I'm about to explain. Let's talk about how Vitamin D3 actually burns fat. The first method is by increasing something called Leptin. Have you ever eaten food before and gotten full? If you haven't you're probably not human. Honestly, what happens is leptin signals your brain that you're full. When you eat a lot of food you have the production of Leptin, signals your brain that you're full and you stop eating. Problem is that without Vitamin D3, Leptin levels don't generally increase that much. If you have enough D3 your brain can signal and your brain can be told you need to stop eating. It's that simple. Low levels of Vitamin D3 those Leptin levels don't get too high and you can keep eating, making it very easy to overeat. Remember what I said about the Vitamin D3 getting stored in fat cells? Think about this, if you already are low in D3 and then you eat and you don't have enough Leptin so you keep eating more then you're going to develop more fat cells, which means you're going to hold onto more Vitamin D in the fat cells and more and more to the point where you have this snowball effect where you continue to store fat. Are you one of those people that have just looked in the mirror and say how did this happen to me? Honestly, I was one of those people seven or eight years ago. The other way that Vitamin D3 is proving to potentially be a good belly fat burner is through the modulation of the parathyroid and calcitriol hormones. The Parathyroid is a small set of glands around the thyroid in our throat and basically when they produce parathyroid or they produce calcitriol, we have a rapid increase in how our body stores fat. It tends to want to store it more. If we have enough Vitamin D3 the parathyroid and calcitriol hormones aren't quite as crazy. They're not going quite as haywire, which means your body slowly stores and slowly metabolizes fat versus doing it rapidly, making it where you look in the mirror and feel like it happened overnight. Those are the two main reasons that Vitamin D3 is starting to play a big role in belly fat. This wouldn't be a traditional video of mine if I didn't at least reference one peer reviewed, double blind placebo study. One study took 218 women. These 218 women they gave a strict diet and exercise program to and they asked them to follow it for a year. Then they took half of these women and they gave them Vitamin D. The other half of the women they gave a placebo. After one year of time, it was found that the women that took the Vitamin D had on average seven pounds more weight loss than those that didn't take the Vitamin D. It doesn't sound like much but just by adding Vitamin D it's pretty dang interesting. Then, there's one other study. There is another study that found that those that were taking Vitamin D3 had a better waist to hip ration than those that were not. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. However, most of the Western countries are deficient in Vitamin D, including many patients with Type 2 diabetes, due to limited sunlight exposure caused by a number of factors, including more time spent at home, in the office or the car, shorter days in winter, sunscreen use in summer and fears of skin cancer. Vitamin D therapy may help in the treatment of diabetes, according to the findings of a new study that was published in the Cell journal. Vitamin D, which is sometimes referred to as the sunshine vitamin, provides various health benefits such as protecting you from colds and flu. However, the latest research shows that vitamin D may also help in the fight against diabetes. Researchers from the Salk Institute wrote in the published study that one of the primary causes in the progression of type 2 diabetes is the dysfunction of beta cells in the pancreas. When these beta cells stop working, the body becomes unable to create insulin to control a person's blood sugar, allowing glucose levels to increase to dangerous levels. However, the scientists discovered that vitamin D therapy is capable of treating the damaged beta cells. Using beta cells that were created from embryonic stem cells, the researchers identified a compound named iBRD9 that worked with vitamin D to help the recovery of the beta cells. In tests on a mouse model of diabetes, the vitamin D therapy brought glucose back to normal levels in the animal subjects. The combination of the compound with vitamin D triggered the anti-inflammatory function of the beta cells' genes, helping them survive. The researchers said that no side effects were observed on the mice that received the compound. However, further testing is required before clinical trials on humans can begin. Vitamin D has previously been linked with diabetes when epidemiologists found that the lack of vitamin D gave healthy people a higher risk for diabetes. Vitamin D, which received its name as the sunshine vitamin because it is created in our skin when exposed to direct sunlight, also helps keep our bones healthy and aids in calcium and phosphorus absorption. As well as assisting glycemic control, increasing your levels of vitamin D can also helps to: Aid weight loss – studies have shown that good vitamin D status helps to reduce parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, which in the long-term may promote weight loss and reduce risk of obesity, which is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Regulate appetite – vitamin D can increase your body’s levels of the hormone leptin, which controls body fat storage and triggers the sensation of satiety, giving the feeling of having eaten enough and thus lowering hunger levels. Reduce belly fat - an increase in vitamin D can help lower levels of cortisol, a stress hormone produced in the adrenal glands. Cortisol is involved in a number of important functions, including the body's response to stress and regulation of blood pressure. But higher and more prolonged levels of the hormone in the blood can lead to increased abdominal fat, which is linked to various health conditions including diabetes type 2. We often get this vitamin from exposure to sunlight, but it is also obtained by eating certain foods such as fish and dairy products. Vitamin D supplementation is also popular, since getting enough of this vitamin is difficult from diet alone. Unfortunately, there are quite a few individuals who are deficient in this vitamin without even knowing it as the signs and symptoms are either subtle or not well known. Over time this could have a negative effect on an individuals quality of life. Lets discuss some signs and symptoms of vitamin D deficiency. 1. Those who are vitamin D deficient may feel more fatigued and tired. Since there are so many reasons why we can feel tired and fatigued during the day, such as lack of sleep or obesity, vitamin D deficiency is often overlooked. Vitamin D deficiency can cause daytime fatigue or even make it harder to get out of bed in the mornings, even with quality sleep. 2. Vitamin D plays an important role in keeping our immune system strong and free from different bacteria and illness. This is because vitamin D directly effects the cells that are responsible for fighting against infection. Therefore, another sign and symptom of vitamin D deficiency is getting sick more often. Low levels of vitamin D can be a contributing factor to becoming infected with cold and flus more often. As well, it has been found that taking vitamin D supplements may reduce the risk of certain respiratory tract infections. 3. Another possible symptom of vitamin D deficiency is bone and lower back pain. Vitamin D is an important vitamin for maintaining overall bone health. It supports bone health and helps with the body’s absorption of calcium. It has been found that those individuals with a vitamin D deficiency were more like to have back pain which often limited their daily activities. As well, they were also more likely to have bone pain through out their bodies, such as in their legs and joints. A deficiency in this vitamin will not only cause bone pain, but it can also cause bone loss since it not only helps with calcium absorption, but also bone metabolism. This can lead to lower bone mineral density. 4. Vitamin D deficiency may also negatively effect our mood. Feelings of depression may be a sign of vitamin D deficiency. This has often been linked to older adults. By being deficient in this vitamin, it may also cause seasonal depression during the colder months, when exposure to sunlight is limited. Depression and all mental health symptoms are complex and should be discussed with your medical practitioner to determine its exact cause and remedy. 5. Lastly, another sign and symptom of vitamin D deficiency may be hair loss. When hair loss is severe, this can be the result of nutrient deficiency. Hair loss may be a sign of vitamin D deficiency in female-patten hair loss. As well, there have been links found between low levels of vitamin D and alopecia areata, and low levels of this vitamin may be a risk factor for developing this autoimmune disease which can effect hair loss. Be sure to discuss any of the above signs and symptoms with your medical practitioner to determine their exact cause and also to discuss the correct amount of vitamin D you should be taking daily to support your health. Vitamin D3 May Work as a Fat loss miracle. There is a lean-body hormone that has been known since it was discovered by Japanese researchers in 2000. This hormone is known as "fibroblast growth factor-21" or FGF21. FGF21 works to burn fat that is stored in the body as fuel. It is present in many animals also and this enables some species of animals to hibernate and thus live off their fat all winter long. Humans that have a good deal of FGF21 will naturally stay leaner throughout their adult years and also often live longer and healthier lives. Since the FGF21 in mice is so similar to humans, experiments were conducted to introduce FGF21 to mice externally. What researchers have found out is that the mice lived much longer and stayed leaner, even if they were consuming the same amount of calories. The FGF21 readily allows for the fast conversion of body fat to fuel. Some scientists have theorized that FGF21 may be an answer to diabetes, obesity and also prolong peoples lives. But other scientists have argued that some humans are FGF21 resistant and thus external introduction of FGF21 will have no affect. But there is another factor to consider. FGF21 is dependent on Klotho that makes beta-klotho protein. It is vitamin D that increases the Klotho, which is essential for FGF21 to work. So it may be that many people who have FGF21, may not have adequate Klotho that makes beta-klotho protein. This can be remedied with vitamin D. In this case, it would seem likely that these people would greatly benefit by vitamin D by reaping the benefits of turning on the body fat burn. Additionally, it has been known for many years that vitamin D, especially the natural form D3 or cholecalciferol, can possibly prevent or decrease the incidence of many diseases. Also, since vitamin D helps the body to produce the klotho protein, another benefit is in the ability of the klotho protein to limit excessive phosphorus. Excessive phosphorus is a major factor in premature aging. Heavy amounts of phosphorus are often found in fast foods. So vitamin D can also help protect from premature aging, in addition to the other known health benefits and now possible easier body-fat burn in some individuals by raising the production of the klotho protein, which indirectly works with "fibroblast growth factor-21" or FGF21

Of course, these are important things to consider, but they’re only part of the story when it comes to how and why the body stores energy as fat. Elements of our inner world, such as our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, interact with elements of our environment to influence our metabolism in surprising ways. In this illuminating new video from IPEtv, Marc David, Founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, takes a look at a lesser-known piece of the weight puzzle: our relationship with the sun. In many modern societies, we’ve come to regard the sun with suspicion, limiting our exposure whenever possible - but compelling new scientific research suggests that if we hide in the shadows for too long, our body won’t be able to produce the nutrients it needs to burn calories efficiently. I’m Marc David, founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating. Let’s talk about some strange things that can make us gain weight. And one of them is lack of vitamin D. So first, in the big picture, we live in a world where weight is a concern for lots of people. And few of us realize how complex a topic it is. We think weight is all about calories in, calories out. And that’s just one millionth of the story. So, more importantly, far too many people have been shamed by the world for what they way or how they look. So we’re going to approach this topic of weight from a perspective of not making anybody wrong for what they weigh, but from really looking at an honest and nonjudgmental perspective at the hidden complexities of the phenomenon of weight and the inability to lose it. And, indeed, there are strange things that cause us to gain weight. One of them that the research is telling us is lack of vitamin D. Now, you’ve got to realize when you hear lack of vitamin D, what I really want you to hear is lack of sun. So you may very well need more sun so you can be at your natural weight. That’s become the amount of vitamin D you get from your diet tends to be very minimal. So vitamin D production in food is infinitesimally small. We produce the majority of our vitamin D from exposure to the sun. Now, check it out. According to an Italian study at the University of Milan – I’ve been there – vitamin D deficiency is associated with a higher risk of obesity and obesity-related complications. Studies have suggested that above 40% to 75% of North American adults are indeed vitamin D deficient. Now, a new study published online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that healthy or what we call replete levels of vitamin D may be associated with weight loss, particularly in a certain segment of postmenopausal overweight women. So really what we’re saying here is this: you’ve got to get sun. And even though we don’t have the exact mechanisms down, we don’t fully understand this connection between vitamin D and weight, what we do know is that once again, we’re learning that the sun is your best friend ever.
