Now I'm not saying that you need to go out and take massive amounts of Vitamin C but what I do want to do is explain how Vitamin C is created in the body in most animals and how it's not created in humans, and if you understand this process and you understand the enzymatic process in which Vitamin C is created, it gives you a better understanding of how you may want to be potentially supplementing Vitamin C. Let's get straight down to the facts on how the body works. Most people think of Vitamin C as this immune boosting vitamin or supplement that you take to help prevent you from getting sick, but the reality is, it's more than that. It's an electron donor, and what I mean by that is Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, has an extra electron. It has an ability to donate over to free radicals within the body to ultimately neutralize them. You see, free radicals are the oxidative stress that is running around through your body. When we have Vitamin C in the equation, we have this extra electron that can be donated over to a free radical to ultimately render it useless, meaning we can stop those free radicals right in their tracks. Here's the interesting thing. Animals have a natural ability to create Vitamin C. Humans do not. You see, animals create Vitamin C or ascorbic acid in their livers through the combination of four different enzymes. What happens is when they're under stress or when they're under any kind of interesting situation where they have to have a big surge of Vitamin C to combat free radicals, their body will create more. If an animal is under stress, its liver or kidneys creates more Vitamin C to ultimately combat it. So we have sort of this evolutionary proof that Vitamin C does have an effect on neutralizing bad things within the body. The problem is, humans lack the ability to create that Vitamin C. If you look back at the old times, we look back at the Mayflower and Christopher Columbus and all of that stuff, people contracted scurvy. Well, the way that they contracted it was because it was a deficiency in Vitamin C because they weren't able to get it from exogenous sources. They weren't able to eat fruits and veggies when they were on ships, so therefore, they became Vitamin C deficient because their bodies couldn't synthesize it and manufacture it on their own. Now we're running into a similar situation because a lot of our fruits and vegetables are void of the nutrients that we need to get adequate amounts of Vitamin C. So of course we take Vitamin C supplements, no big deal, right? Then that leads us into megadosing Vitamin C because a lot of people have been asking me, Vitamin C, can we take it in megadoses to ultimately combat cancer, to ultimately combat illness, and what is the effect of taking it in extreme doses? Well, we have to take a look again at how it works in the animal world. You see, in the animal world, their livers are gonna produce enough Vitamin C to combat a stressful situation that is ebbing and flowing throughout the course of the day, meaning they might have a baseline level of ascorbic acid that they're making, then they get stressed out so their body creates more. Humans, we have to rely on taking it exogenously, and it's all because we lack that enzyme known as gulonolactone oxidase. Without gulonolactone oxidase, we cannot create Vitamin C. So if we take massive amounts of Vitamin C at one point in time, we are basically simulating an animal only creating extra Vitamin C at one point in time, when in reality, we need to be able to have surges of Vitamin C throughout the course of the day. 1) Blanchard J , et al. Vitamin C & the New Age of Enlightenment It has been alleged, perhaps even proven, that vitamin C supplementation beyond the normal recommended daily allowance (RDA) can be vastly supportive of overall good health and longevity. Most species in the animal kingdom will produce their own vitamin C in their bodies as an essential hormone. This is true of cats, dogs, mice and most species and without the internal production of vitamin C, all these species of animals would have greatly shortened life spans. Humans only have 3 of the 4 essential enzymes to produce vitamin C in the body internally. Sometime in the past humans have switched off the gene for gulonolactone oxidase (GLO) enzyme and thus has greatly shorten the normal lifespan of humans. It may be that the Bible, that some say embellishes facts, may be historically dead on accurate when the recorded lifespan of Noah was 950 years. Descendents after Noah, had decreased life spans with succeeding generations. Shem lived to 600 years, then Arphaxad lived to 438 and the generations later to Abraham who lived to 175 years. On to the time of Moses who lived to 120 years. This would correlate to the slow mutation and switching off of the gulonolactone oxidase (GLO) gene. Actually a small percentage of humans can still manufacture a small amount of vitamin C in the body. This further indicates that this may likely have been a normal human capability many centuries ago, as it exists presently in most of the animal kingdom. Currently humans still have the GLO gene but it is non-functioning. Scientists have estimated that with the switching back on of the GLO gene human may again live to be hundreds of years old. Some may think this could have negative social and medical implications but on the flip side it could be a major boon to prosperity due the vast amount of knowledge, experience and skills an older productive generation would possess. But aside from gene therapy, it may be that vitamin C supplementation could have some beneficial anti-aging effects on it's own. Studies have shown that vitamin C slows down the shortening of the telomeres on the DNA by over 50%. Telomeres protect the ends of the DNA and help preserve vital DNA information during cellular division. Another benefit of vitamin C is collagen production. Not only is collagen a major component of the skin, but it is present throughout the body in the tendons, ligaments and all connective tissue. Vitamin C also plays a major role as an anti-inflammatory.In the case of cigarette smokers, large amounts of vitamin C become depleted in the body from smoking cigarettes and this is a major reason for early aging and wrinkles in the face. Cigarette smokers could greatly benefit with additional vitamin C supplementation. In some ways extra vitamin C supplementation could provide some of the same benefits as hormone replacement therapy but at greatly reduced cost. Controversial as it is vitamin C has outperformed AZT in trials on HIV infected human cells. In the New Optimum Nutrition Bible I report on ‘in vitro’ trials on human T-cells infected with HIV, comparing the anti-viral effect of AZT with vitamin C. I say that “AZT, the first prescribable anti-HIV drug, is potentially harmful and proving less effective than vitamin C in suppressing the virus in chronically infected cells (Ref 23).” Ref 23. These ‘in vitro’ studies on human T-cells shows that vitamin C suppresses the HIV virus in both chronically and latently infected cells, while AZT has no significant effect.. The real crime here is that no full scale human trials have been funded on vitamin C to follow up Jariwalla’s important finding probably because it is non-patentable and hence not profitable. Until such a trial is done we will not know to what extent vitamin C can act as an anti-retroviral agent. The non-toxicity of vitamin C, compared to AZT, make the need for this research of paramount importance. Finally, with respect to the conventional cocktail of antiretroviral drugs (which include AZT), it is well known that although these drugs can lower HIV viral load in the bloodstream, such drugs do not restore or reconstitute the immune system, indicating the need for other immunotherapeutic approaches. Why then is vitamin therapy not taken seriously in AIDS? The reason cannot be lack of medical evidence as several peer-reviewed clinical studies support a beneficial role for vitamins in AIDS.

The Winter 2009 edition of Wise Traditions cites 3 studies, which give pause about large doses of vitamin C. The first study (from the Jun 15, 2001 issue of Science) showed that “synthetic vitamin C may contribute to the formation of genotoxins that can lead to cancer.” A second study presented to the American Heart Association showed a link between consumption of only 500mg of vitamin C per day and a greater propensity toward thickening of the arteries (Los Angeles Times, March 3, 2000). Even more recently, athletes taking 1000mg of vitamin C per day showed reduced endurance capacity from interference with antioxidant enzymes (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Jan 2008). Instead of getting extra vitamin C through ascorbic acid, the article recommends non-ascorbic acid vitamin C supplements. There are many types available on the market. Enzymes have optimal conditions under which they operate. Temperature, pH, enzyme concentration and substrate concentration are some conditions that affect the rate of reaction. As enzymes are proteins, they have an optimum temperature in which they work. They also have a temperature above which they start to denature. This means the active site starts to change shape, so that they can no longer facilitate a reaction. When the active site changes shape, the substrate can no longer fit into the enzyme. This is known as denaturation. Enzymes also have an optimum pH. Sometime in the past humans have switched off the gene for gulonolactone oxidase (GLO) enzyme and thus has greatly shorten the normal lifespan of humans. It may be that the Bible, that some say embellishes facts, may be historically dead on accurate when the recorded lifespan of Noah was 950 years. Descendents after Noah, had decreased life spans with succeeding generations. Shem lived to 600 years, then Arphaxad lived to 438 and the generations later to Abraham who lived to 175 years. On to the time of Moses who lived to 120 years. This would correlate to the slow mutation and switching off of the gulonolactone oxidase (GLO) gene. Actually a small percentage of humans can still manufacture a small amount of vitamin C in the body. This further indicates that this may likely have been a normal human capability many centuries ago, as it exists presently in most of the animal kingdom. Currently humans still have the GLO gene but it is non-functioning. Scientists have estimated that with the switching back on of the GLO gene human may again live to be hundreds of years old. Some may think this could have negative social and medical implications but on the flip side it could be a major boon to prosperity due the vast amount of knowledge, experience and skills an older productive generation would possess. But aside from gene therapy, it may be that vitamin C supplementation could have some beneficial anti-aging effects on it's own. Studies have shown that vitamin C slows down the shortening of the telomeres on the DNA by over 50%. Telomeres protect the ends of the DNA and help preserve vital DNA information during cellular division. Another benefit of vitamin C is collagen production. Not only is collagen a major component of the skin, but it is present throughout the body in the tendons, ligaments and all connective tissue. Vitamin C also plays a major role as an anti-inflammatory. In the case of cigarette smokers, large amounts of vitamin C become depleted in the body from smoking cigarettes and this is a major reason for early aging and wrinkles in the face. Cigarette smokers could greatly benefit with additional vitamin C supplementation. In some ways extra vitamin C supplementation could provide some of the same benefits as hormone replacement therapy but at greatly reduced cost. Some trials show some effect in combination with other therapies, but this does not imply vitamin C megadoses in themselves have therapeutic effect. The World Health Organization recommends a daily intake of 45 milligrams (mg)/day of vitamin C for healthy adults, and 25–30 mg/day in infants. Vitamin C is necessary for production of collagen and other biomolecules, and for the prevention of scurvy. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which has led to its endorsement by some researchers as a complementary therapy for improving quality of life. Since the 1930s, when it first became available in pure form, some physicians have experimented with higher than recommended vitamin C consumption or injection. Certain animal species, including haplorhine primates (which includes humans), members of the Caviidae family of rodents (including guinea pigs and capybaras), most species of bats, many passerine birds, and about 96% of fish (the teleosts), do not synthesize vitamin C internally. Since its discovery, vitamin C has been considered almost a panacea by some, although this led to suspicions of it being overhyped by others. Vitamin C has been promoted in alternative medicine as a treatment for the common cold, cancer, polio and various other illnesses. The evidence for these claims is mixed. Orthomolecular-based megadose recommendations for vitamin C are based mainly on theoretical speculation and observational studies, such as those published by Fred R. Klenner from the 1940s through the 1970s. There is a strong advocacy movement for such doses of vitamin C, and there is an absence of large scale, formal trials in the 10 to 200+ grams per day range. The single repeatable side effect of oral megadose vitamin C is a mild laxative effect if the practitioner attempts to consume too much too quickly. A tolerable upper limit (UL) of vitamin C was set at 2 grams for the first time in the year 2000, referencing this mild laxative effect as the reason for establishing the UL.:13 About 70-90% of vitamin C is adsorbed by the body when taken orally at normal levels (30–180 mg daily). Adsorption is only about 50% for daily doses of 1 g. Oral administration, even of mega doses, cannot raise blood concentration above 0.22 mM. Humans and other species that do not synthesize vitamin C carry a mutated and ineffective form of the enzyme L-gulonolactone oxidase, the fourth and last step in the ascorbate-producing machinery. If you have advanced adrenal fatigue most patients do better on adrenal glandulars. For more mild disease consider using adrenal adaptogens. If your cortisol is elevated consider using phosphatidylserine. 3. Zinc - Low levels of zinc can cause issues with your skin and issue with hair growth. Adding zinc boosts immune function, T4 to T3 conversion and acts as an anti-inflammatory. Make sure to supplement with zinc bound to picolinic acid. 4. Iron - This is what I consider a "Goldilocks" nutrient in that you don't want TOO much or TOO little. Unfortunately, most doctors look for iron deficiency anemia and don't necessarily jus treat iron deficiency unless anemia accompanies it. Use these optimal levels to supplement with iron. 5. Magnesium - Hypothyroidism alters magnesium and low levels of magnesium can lead to issues like depression, anxiety and other changes like muscle cramps or restless leg syndrome. How to Get the Most out of Vitamin Supplements- Thomas DeLauer: When should you take your vitamins? To learn more about how I can help you, head to http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Many factors play a role on how available vitamins and supplements are when you take them. Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E and K- These are stored in the liver and fat stores in your body, so you do not need to consume these every day. They are easy to get from food as they are not easily broken down by heat when cooking. These are the most important vitamins to eat with food, as the name implies, they are only absorbed and used by the body in the presence of fat. These vitamins dissolve in fat and are then delivered to the bloodstream for use in the body. Not much fat is needed, but if taking a supplement, or even eating fruits and veggies, but sure to have some fat added. If you make a healthy smoothie, add some almond butter or you favorite oil, such as macadamia nut oil. When eating salads, do not use fat-free salad dressings! Olive oil and lemon juice are great options. Be careful if you supplement these vitamins and be sure to check with your doctor if you feel you may need to do so. These vitamins are only needed in small quantities and can build up to a dangerous level if too many are taken. Vitamin D is the main fat-soluble vitamin in the US where deficiencies are common. This is due to inadequate exposure to sunlight. Fortified foods and supplements can help. Try to obtain 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight twice per week to avoid a deficiency, and if this is not possible then talk to your doctor about supplementation. Water-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are water soluble vitamins that you need to be sure to include in your diet daily. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are not stored in your adipose tissue or liver and are in essence washed from your body daily. Food storage and preparation are important when making sure to get sufficient quantities of these vitamins. Deficiencies are uncommon, however vegans do not have a natural source of vitamin B12 and usually need to supplement. While deficiencies are not common, it is still important to consume daily for bodily functioning. As these vitamins dissolve in water, you do not need to take these with foods, although you can if you want to. Minerals: Calcium and Magnesium (2,4) - These are best taken with food and good to take at night. Calcium is linked to improved sleep due to its muscle relaxing abilities and magnesium has calming effects on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Zinc (2,4) - Take with or after meals to avoid stomach upset. Do not take with dairy as calcium hampers absorption. Also avoid taking with iron as large quantities of iron can also hurt your body’s ability to absorb zinc. Avoid taking excess zinc, which can lead to anemia through suppression of copper absorption. Iron (4) - Best to take on an empty stomach. Avoid taking with zinc, calcium and vitamin E as these can decrease absorption. If you have a sensitive stomach you may not do well when taking iron on an empty stomach. If so, take with a light meal. Probiotics (4) - Best to take 30 minutes before a meal as this is when digestive enzymes, bile salts and stomach acid are at low levels. These levels peak after a meal, so this is the worst time to take a probiotic. Fiber (2) - Be sure to separate taking fiber from other nutritional supplements as fiber can hamper mineral absorption. Fish Oil (4) – Fish Oil is best to take with food and with your multivitamin, or other fat-soluble vitamins, if you take them. The fat in the food that you eat can help to aid in digestion and absorption. As fats take a long time for your body to digest, it is best not to take fish oil pills or eat a fatty meal pre-workout. This can cause digestive upset. Multivitamins: As these contain both water- and fat-soluble vitamins, take with plenty of water and some food with fat in it, but try not to take with dairy as this can reduce your absorption of zinc. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid and L-ascorbic acid, is a vitamin found in food and used as a dietary supplement. The disease scurvy is prevented and treated with vitamin C-containing foods or dietary supplements. Evidence does not support use in the general population for the prevention of the common cold. There is, however, some evidence that regular use may shorten the length of colds. It is unclear if supplementation affects the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, or dementia. It may be taken by mouth or by injection. Vitamin C is generally well tolerated. Large doses may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, trouble sleeping, and flushing of the skin. Normal doses are safe during pregnancy. The United States Institute of Medicine recommends against taking large doses. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient involved in the repair of tissue and the enzymatic production of certain neurotransmitters. It is required for the functioning of several enzymes and is important for immune system function. It also functions as an antioxidant. Foods containing vitamin C include citrus fruits, kiwifruit, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, raw bell peppers, and strawberries. Prolonged storage or cooking may reduce vitamin C content in foods. Vitamin C was discovered in 1912, isolated in 1928, and in 1933 was the first vitamin to be chemically produced. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines, the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system. Vitamin C is available as a generic medication and over-the-counter drug. In 2015, the wholesale cost in the developing world was less than US$0.01 per tablet. In the morning! • As multivitamins contain both water and fat soluble vitamins, be sure to include some healthy fats with your meal for optimal absorption. -B-Complex vitamins - Taking B vitamins with breakfast helps to boost your metabolism and convert your food into energy, which can be used throughout the day. -Vitamin C- Vitamin C is best taken in the morning to support the immune system and boost energy levels. • Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin that lasts only a few hours in the blood stream, so if your formula recommends more than 1 tablet per day, take it in divided doses with meals to get the full benefit. So lets start from the basic, being a certified health coach, I always like to explain thing from the basic level for all of you to understand your body better. I’m sure you must have got the hang of how having a ph balance in the body is so very important! Now that we know balancing ph is important. But how to do that? So let me tell you a few things you can do which are super easy and super effective to help you keep the ph balance!
