How to Tell Your Dog Has Allergies

01:33
Dog Allergy Symptoms - as part of the series on dogs and pets by GeoBeats. Hello, my name is Dr. Carolyn Quagliata. I am the owner and founder of City Pet Doctor. I am here to talk about the most common allergies in dogs. The first is food allergies. Food allergies in dogs manifest as vomiting, diarrhea and lack of appetite. Dogs are actually allergic to the protein source in the food, so usually it is a specific type of meat whether it be chicken, beef, fish, venison, rabbit: the list goes on. The second is seasonal allergies also known as atopy. These dogs present as having very itchy skin, red skin. A lot of times they will lose their hair and they also get secondary infections. Usually it is a result of certain types of pollen that accumulate in the air at that time. The third is flea allergies. The name speaks for itself but these allergies present very similar to the seasonal allergies or atopy. The important thing to keep in mind is that an allergic dog can have a combination of all the types of allergies that I listed. For example, they can be food allergic and also have atopy. So the important thing is that if your dog is experiencing any chronic symptoms whether it be vomiting, diarrhea, itchy skin or red skin make sure you talk to your Vet and so that your dog can get treated and be much more comfortable.

Epsom Salt Bath for my Dog's Seasonal Allergies

06:08
This is a video of me and my Snoo'! Snoopy has seasonal allergies - he gets EXTREMELY itchy! He can't sleep at night because of how intensely itchy he gets. The itchiness is always in his armpit area and on the fronts of his paws. So, while he walks he needs to scratch, so he hops and jumps around while walking. Because of Snoopy's physical barriers, he is unable to actual scratch himself, because his legs can't reach. This may be a blessing in disguise because this impedes him from irritating the itchy spot further, but alas, it's torture in any form. For each summer I've been trying to figure out what works. Last summer I tried oatmeal baths, special doggy shampoo baths, calamine lotion, aloe, anti-itch creams... the Calamine seemed to work best, but it is so messy and sticky! It sticks in his fur and becomes all matted down. I wanted to try something different. So, I've tried this Epsom Salts bath, which I have read about. People seem to say that it can soothe itchy irritations, and can be calming for people and pets alike. Let's hope it works!

It’s more common during the spring, summer and fall – for obvious reasons. However, if not treated or controlled in a timely manner, seasonal allergies can progress to year-round allergies. A wide range of allergens can trigger seasonal allergy symptoms. Trees, grasses and pollens are the biggest culprits, but you cannot ignore environmental pollutants. It can be really difficult to keep allergens away from your pets. But if you are aware of the symptoms, proper treatment can be provided at the right time and you can minimize your furry friend’s discomfort. Here are some of the signs of seasonal allergies in dogs. 1. Excessive ScratchingIf your dog is constantly scratching, it could be a telltale sign of seasonal allergies.Non-stop scratching and rubbing against furniture or carpeting to get relief from the itching is very common among pets that are sensitive to dust and pollen. As the constant itching and scratching can lead to hair loss, trauma and severe skin infections, you need to take this symptom seriously. For itchy skin, raw and unfiltered apple cider vinegar is one of the best remedies. Simply pour raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and an equal amount of water into a spray bottle. Spray the solution on the itchy skin a few times a day.2. Red, Irritated SkinJust like humans, dogs can break out in rashes and hives when exposed to environmental allergens. You may see red and irritated skin on the stomach and paws, particularly between the toes, as these are the common body parts that come in contact with environmental allergens. The ears can also become inflamed due to allergies.Regular bathing and proper hygiene can help deal with red and irritated skin.3. SneezingSneezing is another big sign that your dog may be suffering from seasonal allergies.Dogs with seasonal allergies may begin sneezing excessively. It may be accompanied by a clear discharge from the nose and eyes. Also, the eyes may become watery.Sneezing usually clears up on its own in a week. However, as sneezing can also be a symptom of kennel cough, a sinus infection or nasal mites, it is best to consult your vet if your dog is sneezing a lot.4. Obsessive LickingIf your dog is persistently licking his paws or other body parts, it can mean that your pet is suffering from seasonal allergies.Your pet may be allergic to pollen, grass or dust that can cause intense itching on the paws.Other reasons behind obsessive licking can be mites, fleas, dry skin, cuts, scrapes or some kind of foreign object stuck in the paw.Soaking your dogs’ paws in warm water can help get rid of ragweed, grass, pollens, mold, dust mites and other pollutants to help relieve the itching and thus the licking. You can also add a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to the water before soaking.5. Seasonal Allergies in Dogs

02:09
Seasonal Allergies in Dogs. Did you know that there are two kinds of allergies that dogs experience? They can be allergic to food, or they can suffer from environmental allergies. Today we will be talking about the signs of seasonal allergies as well as some treatment options you can try at home. Top 4 Signs of Seasonal Allergies in Dogs 1. Hot spots - Skin allergies can manifest as areas of irritation called "hot spots", which a dog will lick and scratch, often to the point of losing hair and forming scabs. 2. Intense licking, biting, scratching and chewing - This happens because the skin has released histamine and is irritated by whatever materials the dog is allergic to. 3. Ear problems and respiratory issues - These can happen anytime but can be a sign if they coincide with the changing of seasons. 4. Visible irritation - This can manifest as redness in the eyes, the anus, between the toes of the paws, and even on the mouth and chin. So now that we know the signs of seasonal allergies, what can we do to help? 1. Bathing - Frequent baths rinse away the allergens transferred in from outdoors. This includes allergens that have reached the skin via the coat. 2. Foot baths - Soaking a dog's feet can eliminate even more allergens that they might bring indoors and then spread throughout the home - increasing their exposure to the most irritating materials. 3. Keep your dog's indoor environment as allergen free as you can by frequently vacuuming or washing floors, wiping down toys and cleaning bedding. 4. Optimize their immune function - Talk with your vet about the need for shots or vaccinations during any problems with seasonal allergies as injections cause an immune reaction that can worsen the allergies. 5. Switch to an anti-inflammatory diet - Some foods worsen inflammation, and the biggest culprits are grains. Try to get your dog on a diet low or entirely free of grain during the worst of the allergy season (and perhaps all year long). 6. Supplements - Consider adding a daily supplement such as Vivamune to your dog's routine which can help ease symptoms related to seasonal allergies.

Are You Allergic to Your Dog? Tips to Minimize Allergy Symptoms

03:37
It has been estimated that there are over 70 million dogs in the United States alone and that perhaps as many as 40% of U.S. households have a pet dog. Their popularity is due to their unique ability to enrich pet owners’ lives and provide companionship. Unfortunately, many people who suffer from allergies are also allergic to dogs. In fact, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America reports that as many as 30% of people with allergies have allergic reactions to dogs and cats, although cat allergies appear to be about twice as common as dog allergies. These pet allergens can even trigger an asthma attack in some people with the condition. Dog allergens are primarily found in pet dander, saliva and even urine. A dog’s fur is not generally the culprit, although it can collect dander, saliva and urine or other common allergens such as pollen, dust mites or mold. Dog allergy symptoms vary from person to person, but common symptoms may include: • Stuffy nose, sneezing and nasal congestion • Coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath • Inflamed or watery eyes • Skin rash There are medical tests to help determine if someone has a pet allergy and there are also services available to test for the presence of dog allergens in a home. Fortunately, there are also simple steps that pet owners with allergies can take to reduce the presence of dog allergens and to reduce their exposure. They include the following: • Bathe dogs on a regular basis • Keep dogs out of bedrooms and especially out of people’s beds • Wash bedding in hot water • Don’t allow dogs on furniture • Keep dogs outside when possible or practical • Vacuum, clean and dust on a regular basis, but try not to aerosolize the allergens • Use a HEPA air cleaner These are just a few things to know about dog allergens and what can be done to minimize allergy symptoms. Apple Cider Vinegar Itchy Dog’s Skin - Natural Holistic Treatment

Using commercial products may or may not help and you might end up spending a fortune finding a product that actually works. Before you go out and buy another product, try using apple cider vinegar for dogs skin. There are many benefits of apple cider vinegar for dogs that might just solve those irritating conditions that are plaguing your pet. Apple cider vinegar helps to relieve itchy skin for dogs who get themselves into yeast or poison ivy. Simply mix a 50/50 solution of apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Apply directly to the dog’s itchy spots, but be careful NOT to spray on open wounds – the vinegar will sting. If you can’t apply by spraying and yeast is the main concern, you may feed apple cider vinegar in your pet’s food or water. Yeast does not do survive in acid environments that apple cider vinegar will create, so you may feed 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon twice daily to your dog. Find out how you can use household items to live healthier & save money. Learn more. Bragg’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar contains the “mother of vinegar” which has many beneficial enzymes for your pet’s health. It is also raw and unfiltered, so your dog will get the most benefit possible out of using apple cider vinegar. Sponging apple cider vinegar dog’s coat after bathing can help remove soap residues and improve hair condition. The acidity and live enzymes in Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar will help to kill bacteria that causes flaking skin conditions. Soak your dog’s coat to the skin and let it air-dry. This same treatment is also said to repel fleas and ticks. Apple cider vinegar can also be massaged into sore or sprained muscles. It is the foundation of many herbal liniments, relieving pain and inflammation. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse for Dogs Use apple cider vinegar rinse for dogs after shampooing if your dog has skin problems related to allergies, fleas, or ringworm. 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar 1 quart of water Mix well and use once a week as an after-shampoo rinse. DO NOT use water to rinse off the ACV – simply towel your dog dry. Also, you can try using apple cider vinegar to soak your dog’s feet if they have itchy paws from seasonal allergies (pollen). Dilute 1 cup of apple cider vinegar with 1-2 cups of water. Allow your dog to soak his paws in the mixture. This can greatly reduce the itching. For problems with flaky skin or dandruff, you can try massaging full-strength apple cider vinegar your dog’s hair before shampooing. Dogs with Seasonal Allergies | It’s that time of the year again, and while you may be noticing the changes in the plant life, you might also be noticing some unpleasant changes in your four-legged friends. Just like humans, our pets can be very sensitive to outdoor allergens such as trees, grass and weed pollens, dust, house and storage mites, fleas, and indoor and outdoor molds, etc. In order to help assist everyone with their dog's unhealthy allergy symptoms, Angie discusses preventative maintenance and ways to relieve these symptoms during allergy season. How to Diagnose Seasonal Allergies in Cats | Can Cats Have Seasonal Allergies ?

06:39
Diagnosing seasonal feline allergies is not unlike diagnosing them in humans. Look for evidence of hives, redness, and other forms of skin irritation. Sneezing and watery eyes are also common. Your cat might have advanced hair loss in areas that are most affected by the skin irritation, so keep an eye out for bald patches. Keep your windows shut tight and clean your home frequently to avoid getting pollen or mold spores inside. Welcome to Pets and Animals YouTube Channel. Only Natural Pet Aller-Free 7 is designed to ease your pet's allergy symptoms and curb the effects brought on by allergic reactions to airborne substances such as pollens, molds and grasses. The herbs in this formula have been chosen for their supportive properties specifically targeting the lungs and respiratory system. Carefully Selected Balance of Seven Herbs Stinging Nettle Leaf: (Urtica Dioica) This has been a medicinal plant popular with North American physicians throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth. Nettle contains about 20 different chemicals, including lectins, phenols, sterols, lignans, and histamines. Eyebright Herb: (Euphrasia stricta) For centuries, Eyebright has been used for its support of the normal inflammatory response and has antihistamine properties to address various problems relating to the mucous membranes of the eyes, ears, nose, throat, sinuses & bronchi. Licorice Root: (Glycyrrhiza glabra) One of the body's defense mechanisms to regulate allergic reactions is the release of cortisone or adrenalin (epinephrine) from the adrenal glands. Yerba Santa Leaf: (Eriodictyon californucum) This traditional Native American herb is used to support the loosening and release of phlegm and the opening of bronchial passages. Mullein Flower & Leaf: (Verbascum thapsus) Mullein has been shown to help tone the mucous membranes of the respiratory system. Osha: (Ligusticum porteri) Another traditional Native American herb, Osha is used to support the body during periods of upper respiratory stress and congestion. Schizandra Berry: (Schisandra chinensis) This berry is a commonly used substance in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is an adaptogenic herb that can work to bring about system balance (similar to ginsengs). When natural remedies are used in conjunction with a nutritious diet, your pet can enjoy a healthier life. The effectiveness of Aller-Free 7 Herbal Formula, as with ANY herbal or natural remedy, varies with the health of the animal. An animal being fed a high quality diet with adequate vitamins and enzymes will respond better than an animal on a poor quality diet. Each animal's system needs support in healing from within.
