Top 10 Proven Classroom Management Tips for Teachers
Tweet this Video: http://clicktotweet.com/UfFee http://www.ampli.com/ Like us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/AmplivoxPortableSoundSystemsandLecterns Classroom management Definition: "A term used by teachers to describe the process of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly despite disruptive behavior by students." Listed below are several techniques, ideas, resources, and tips for teachers to hone the right skills to conquer their classroom: 1. Start the year tough. Many teachers make the mistake of starting the school year with a poor discipline plan or without any classroom management plan at all. It is so much easier to start tough and then lighten up, then to start light and discipline more. At the beginning of the year, students quickly assess the situation and realize what they will be allowed to get away with. Starting the year tough will give you control and flexibility. 2. Be fair to all students. 3. Be prepared for disruptions---and don't let them phase you. Students often amplify their teacher's reaction to disruptions—be ready for them and be ready to calmly and quickly pick up where you left off. Having a joke or interesting comment ready to bring attention back to you will allow you to transition back to the material. 4. Instill high expectations 5. Incentivize good behavior. Motivating students though rewards like no homework, watching a video, ice cream, or free-activity time can help students by giving them a goal. This can also help students hold each other accountable to class goals and stigmatize negative behavior even more. 6. Overplan. 7. Have a clearly expressed disciplinary plan...with consequences! Make sure students know the disciplinary ladder well. Any hint of ambiguity can leave a loophole for excuses (and students are great at making excuses!). Warn students when they are close to breaking a rule so there will be no ambiguity when that line is crossed. If you constantly raise your voice to get the attention of the class, consider investing in a classroom amplification system which can save your voice by projecting it. The iPod Portable PA system is a great system for classrooms because it features an iPod dock that simultaneously plays and charges your iPod and also has outputs for a projector. 8. Focus on relationships. A teacher than can connect positively with their students will make students behave and easier to manage because students will regard the teacher much like a friend. Using positive reinforcement to build a positive reputation for the child gives the student confidence that their teacher believes in them and will make it harder to disappoint the teacher with bad behavior or work ethic. 9. Be careful about confrontation 10. Be patient and keep practicing. Don't worry if things don't go well right away...controlling your classroom is learn-able but will always be a challenge with some students. Whether you are teach a kindergarten class, at an elementary school, middle school, or high school, it is best to "Expect the Unexpected" and be ready for adversity! Become an NFPA member to see the exclusive videos and ask questions of our technical experts. http://www.nfpa.org/membership Most students have now returned to school for a new year. They probably don't think of the fire safety requirements that impact their return to school or how the Fire Code plays a critical role in helping to ensure their safety throughout the year. However, those requirements which impact students on a daily basis are vast. This NFPA Live session will cover the topics of furnishing and contents, fire department access, food trucks, laboratories, and fire drills. The discussion will focus on these provisions as they relate to NFPA 1, Fire Code.

School Safety Video for School Lockdown Emergencies
School Safe helps keep students and staff safer in the event of a lockdown emergency. It is a simple device that installed on a classroom door allows the door to be quickly and easily secured from inside the classroom during a lockdown. In the event of a school lockdown most schools do not have the facility to lock a classroom door from inside the room. Typically, in an emergency situation, the teacher has to find their keys, go into the hall and lock the door, putting themselves and their students at risk of exposure, then come back into the room and shut the door locking themselves in. At the same time they have to get their students into a safe location in the room and cover any windows. This a lot of time and is potentially dangerous. School Safe minimizes the risk of exposure by allowing the door to be closed and locked at all times while still allowing ingress and egress without the need of a key. In an emergency simply pull School Safe down and the door latches. This takes only seconds and secures the room quickly and efficiently. School Safe is very affordable and easy to install by school maintenance or custodial staff. To learn more watch our ordering and installation videos on our web site. You Are the Experts | Ustedes Son Los Expertos
Part of a workshop curriculum designed for parents by parents, this video is meant to be a call to action by parents and partners in the West Contra Costa Unified School District for the community to get involved in the LCAP. The LCAP stands for the Local Control Accountability Plan, which is the districts specific plan for allocating funds and measuring outcomes for students and school related services. This video was made possible by a community grant from Health Richmond, and by the outstanding contributions and leadership of our partners at The East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, The Latina Center, and GO Public Schools. This video could not have been possible without the tireless dedication of our parent partners who have given their time and energy to create a wonderful tool for all families and parents in WCCUSD. We also would like to thank our past Healthy Richmond staff and interns who put so much energy and thoughtfulness into the planning of this video and curriculum. Wayzata Schools plan for all-day Kindergarten
Kindergarten is where children learn social interaction and are exposed to the world of academics. It's a level of teaching that Ashley Gibbs loves. "They really eat up everything that you say," said Gibbs, a kindergarten teacher at Plymouth Creek Elementary. "Their eyes are bright all the time, and the growth you make throughout the year is like no other grade. They come here kind of as babies and then they leave as people." Next year, when funding for all--day kindergarten kicks in across the state, kindergartners will get even more time to socialize and learn. "And then there's also room to kind of put the little fun things in or adding a theme," Gibbs said. More time, yes, but in the Wayzata School District will there be enough space? "I think generally it's a good thing," Superintendent Chace Anderson said of the district's growth. "It does come with some challenges." Anderson hopes more space will come in the form of a $109 million bonding referendum in February. If approved, it would fund an eighth elementary school and add onto Wayzata High School. "The students are coming, whether it passes in February or not," Anderson said. "So we need to make sure that we have the accommodations to meet the need." At Birchview Elementary, they won't have the accommodations to immediately meet the all--day kindergarten need, so the plan is to move kindergarten classes to nearby Central Middle School for the next two years. "So in some ways, even though it's not the elementary school building, it's somewhat of a neighborhood school," Anderson said. Kindergartners at Plymouth Creek had to spend all of last year at the middle school due to space issues. "It could have been a train wreck, and it really wasn't," Gibbs said. "The older students, it kind of seemed as though they felt a sense of responsibility to take care of them." The district's bond referendum is February 25, 2014. If it fails, the superintendent says the district would likely come back with a modified referendum sometime over the next year. Effective Leaders Academy participant North Wayne Elementary goes from "F" to "B" grade
The Indiana Effective Leaders Academy, a joint program between Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and the IU School of Education, has shown great results for most of its participants, but none better than North Wayne Elementary in the MSD of Wayne Township in Indianapolis. North Wayne improved from an "F" grade to a "B" in just a year after implementing the plan developed through the Effective Leaders Academy. In the latest school accountability grades announced by the Indiana Department of Education in November, eight of the 12 schools that have taken part in the program had improved grades. Five of the schools moved to an A grade, and three were rated as B schools. The Effective Leaders Academy began two years ago as a way to help schools in need of improvement develop an action plan and mechanisms for carrying it out. IU faculty from Kelley and the School of Education shared best practices from both business and education to enable change in their programs. Ongoing support from the IU faculty and staff helped the schools carry out their plans. The cost of school participation in the program was covered by a grant from the IU Bloomington Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President. Watch this short video to hear from the participants about why they took part, what they did, and how it worked.

Marion City Schools holding safety forums after gun incident
MARION, OH (WCMH) - Weeks after a child brought a gun to an elementary school, Marion City Schools is inviting parents to share their input on student safety. The incident happened in October at Benjamin Harrison Elementary. Monica Roberts was one of a handful of parents who attended the first of two safety forums. On Wednesday, the meeting was held at Grant Middle School. "I just mainly was more concerned about after-the-fact," said Roberts. Her fifth-grade son is a classmate of the student who mistakenly brought a gun to school.  "My son saying, 'Oh, well it's not a big deal mom. She's back at school, everything's fine. It's not a big deal.' I just want our children to know that it is a big deal, no matter who's fault it was," she said. Parents spoke directly to police and school officials during the forum, expressing their concerns and offering suggestions on different issues ranging from bullying to bus stop safety. Communications director for Marion City Schools Kurt Moore said all of their input will eventually be discussed in a school safety committee, comprised of parents and staff.  "We're going to put this committee together, get more suggestions and just start getting stuff in place, get an action plan together and see what we can come up with," said Moore.  For now, Moore said they're working with a safety consultant to assess all of their buildings. The district will also begin a new security program (tentatively in January) that does a quick background check on anyone entering their schools.  Marion Police Lt. B.J. Gruber said they hope to strike a balance between safety and maintaining a positive learning environment.  "My kids have and do go to school here. I did go to school here," said Lt. Gruber. "So, those concerns of their safety... their concerns are our concerns not just professionally, but also personally." The next safety forum will be held at Harding High School on December 13th from 6:30-8pm.
