This is the commitment we make to all people in Canada affected by diabetes today and the growing population of tomorrow.” Powered by: Streaming Inc. http://www.streaminginc.com https://twitter.com/StreamingInc

Bret Michaels Life Rocks Foundation & Team Carly Rocks

01:17
On special occasions Bret Michaels’ Life Foundation collaborates with other charitable organizations to benefit individuals, families and causes. While backstage at a recent tour stop Mitch and Carly, a father and daughter diabetic pair met fellow diabetic Bret Michaels. Bret and Mitch discussed bringing their foundations together for this instance which resulted in funding to send 15 children to diabetes summer camp at Camp Ho Mita Koda located in Ohio. As a lifelong Type 1 juvenile diabetic since the age of 6, Bret formed his Life Rocks Foundation out of necessity and a desire to give back to children and communities. In addition, Bret’s Life Rocks Foundation also works with organizations benefiting veterans, St. Jude Children’s Hospital and many others with instant impact and real results rather than taking a knee. Bret is about really doing something about it. Each year Bret sends children to diabetes summer camp which focuses on learning how to manage diabetes while having fun and developing new friendships. Bret remains a focal point in helping to raise diabetes awareness. “Diabetes is the reason I fought so hard to win Celebrity Apprentice” said Michaels referencing his victory on the highest rated season of the show’s existence. “Collaborating Life Rocks with Team Carly Rocks to send 15 children to camp is an awesome day.” In addition, Michaels works closely with the American Diabetes Association and JDRF having served as keynote speaker at numerous gala events which helped to raise millions of dollars for the cause.

Doors open for innovation at Alberta Diabetes Institute

05:23
With today's opening of the Alberta Diabetes Institute, the University of Alberta not only welcomed an eagerly-awaited new building into the campus fold, but, hopefully, an unprecedented level of co-operation. Building on its renowned reputation for diabetes research, the U of A will employ a multidisciplinary approach to solving the diabetes puzzle by involving 35 principal investigators from five university faculties including: Agriculture, Forestry and Home Economics; Medicine & Dentistry; Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; Physical Education and Recreation and the School of Public Health. "Such scientific and technological and social advances, today, are rarely achieved by brilliant individuals working in isolation. Instead, they are achieved through highly specialized and collaborative research carried out in highly sophisticated facilities," said U of A President Indira Samarasekera. "Ask any parent of a child with diabetes, they will tell you that it is imperative that a cure be found soon so their child can look forward to a long and happy life. That's why the Alberta Diabetes Institute exists." In conjunction with World Diabetes Day, the world's gaze focused on the 65,000-square-metre Health Research Innovation Facility, which houses the institute. The institute will eventually occupy about two-thirds of the HRIF east building. Tom Marrie, dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, said the building represents a considerable achievement and the culmination of a dream from his predecessor, Dr. Lorne Tyrrell, and then-associate dean of research Dr. Joel Weiner. "You might say it was born out of necessity, but they conceived of the idea that we needed not one, but two research buildings," said Marrie. "It is also a tribute to the career of Ray Rajotte, who 30 years ago began a lifelong journey to try to find a cure for diabetes. Most importantly, this building is all about a team of dedicated individuals from all across the university who have come together to try to find a cure for diabetes." The institute is the culmination of the life work of Rajotte, who started his research into diabetes in the early 1970s. He was responsible for creating the U of A's famed Islet Transplant team which, in 1999 under the guidance of Dr. James Shapiro, gave the world the Edmonton Protocol - the world's first islet transplant technique. On the heels of this discovery, Rajotte began pushing for a research institute that would corral all facets of diabetes reasearch under one roof. "It took scientists from each of the five faculties to help write the proposal to the Canada Foundation for Innovation," said Rajotte. "To all the scientists and the support staff - I would like to paraphrase John F. Kennedy - ask not what the Alberta Diabetes Institute can do for you, ask what you can do for the Alberta Diabetes Institute." "Work together as a team that will lead the world to find a cure for diabetes." The Canada Foundation for Innovation's original pledge of $28.5 million was the catalyst that sparked the project. The price tag now sits at $300 million, of which the government of Alberta has contributed $246 million. "There really isn't any more important issue in health today," said David Hancock, Alberta's minister of health and wellness, referencing claims that diabetes is an epidemic. "Improving the health of Albertans will assist us with not only improving the quality of their life and their productivity, but also in controlling health-care costs. And this will only occur if government pursues new ways to save live, works to prevent chronic illnesses like diabetes, and encourages people to stay healthy by eating right and staying active." Premier Ed Stelmach declared the institute "the brain centre for research." "As diabetes reaches epidemic proportions world-wide, the opening of the Alberta Diabetes Institute on World Diabetes Day demonstrates Alberta's commitment to investing in diabetes research at the University of Alberta, improving the quality of life for all Canadians affected by diabetes, and providing hope to people across the globe," he said. With all the university's diabetes researchers now under one roof, institutionalizing the much-talked-about atmosphere of co-operation now falls into the lap of Ron Gill, who takes over from Rajotte as the institute's scientific director. "A lot of Nobel prizes have been achieved by people who change fields, work with someone in a different area that they didn't understand very well and together they accomplish something very unique," said Gill. "In fact, that's how they discovered insulin: Banting and Best, people who would not normally work together, did something a little bit different, and looked at things a little differently and did something entirely new, and that's how science works." www.ualberta.ca

Reversing Diabetes with Food

03:46
Type 2 diabetes can be reversed with severe calorie restriction—whether by surgery or starvation—but can also be reversed by simply eating healthier. Subscribe to Dr. Greger’s free nutrition newsletter at https://www.nutritionfacts.org/subscribe and get a free recipe from his new HOW NOT TO DIE COOKBOOK. (All proceeds Dr. Greger receives from the sales of his books, DVDs, and speaking engagements go to support the 501c3 nonprofit that runs NutritionFacts.org.) Type 2 diabetes can be reversed with an extremely low calorie diet (see my last video: Reversing Diabetes with Surgery http://nutritionfacts.org/video/reversing-diabetes-with-surgery). And as this video shows, type 2 diabetes can be reversed with an extremely healthy diet, but is that because it was also low in calories? That’s the million dollar (death?) question that I answer in my next video: Diabetes Reversal: Is it the Calories or the Food? (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/diabetes-reversal-is-it-the-calories-or-the-food). Hold onto your hats, it’s going to be quite a doozy! I’ve touched before at the ability of healthy diets to both prevent (Plant-Based Diets and Diabetes http://nutritionfacts.org/video/Plant-Based-Diets-and-Diabetes) and treat (Plant-Based Diets for Diabetes http://nutritionfacts.org/video/plant-based-diets-for-diabetes) type 2 diabetes. It’s so exciting to be plugging in the final puzzle pieces. What about the benefits of blood sugar medications and more moderate diets? When Drugs & Diets Don't Lower Diabetes Deaths (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/when-drugs-and-diets-dont-lower-diabetes-deaths). Have a question for Dr. Greger about this video? In Canada, significant disparities between the health status of Indigenous peoples and the general population exist, particularly for chronic diseases such as diabetes. It has been the aim of the Diabetes Research Team housed at Western University to work with Canada’s First Nations communities to develop new and innovative ways to change the current healthcare model in Indigenous communities with the overall goal of changing the trajectory of increasing diabetes rates. Over the last 30 years, Dr. Stewart Harris and his team have led over 30 grant-funded research projects that are all built on the principles of participatory action as their foundation. This work has defined the epidemiology of diabetes in Canada’s highest risk population and has led to numerous innovations, from electronic registries to strategies to facilitate the integration of community and clinical programs on-reserve that, too often, lack coordination. Through a five-year nationally funded program called FORGE AHEAD, Dr. Harris is working with Indigenous communities across the country to identify local health challenges and improve the delivery of chronic disease care. http://www.tndms.ca/forgeahead

Inside Story Americas - Canada's indigenous movement gains momentum

25:01
Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe Canada's Idle No More movement began as a small social media campaign - armed with little more than a hashtag and a cause. But it has grown into a large indigenous movement, with protests and ceremonial gatherings held almost daily in many of the country's major cities. The movement is spearheaded by Theresa Spence, the leader of the Attawapiskat, a small native band in northern Ontario. Spence is now 22 days into a hunger strike on Ottawa's Victoria Island just across from the Canadian Parliament. At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.' Reaching more than 270 million households in over 140 countries across the globe, our viewers trust Al Jazeera English to keep them informed, inspired, and entertained. Our impartial, fact-based reporting wins worldwide praise and respect. It is our unique brand of journalism that the world has come to rely on. Medical doctors such as David Perlmutter M.D., David L. Katz, and Timothy Noakes share insights that are certain to challenge the status quo. The Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation - 50th Anniversary

08:37
The Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation of Canada was established in 1964 "to promote charitable work within Canada including the relief of poverty and the advancement of education by making grants to educational or other charitable organization which carries on its work solely within Canada". Since its inception, The Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation has been funded entirely by donations and bequests from members, families and friends of The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of Canada. Its inaugural donation was made to what was then known as the Canadian Association for Retarded Children specifically for the financing of a seminar to bring together leaders in the field of research in the problem of mental retardation, from across Canada and thus started the Foundation's 50 years of support for research into the "Puzzles of the Mind". The Foundation ardently labours for the benefit of all Canadians, regardless of race or creed, with particular interest in funding medical research into areas including dyslexia and autism in children and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and dementia in the aging population. Each year, the Foundation donates more than $420,000 in research grants to universities and research hospitals across Canada with the aim of discovering the causes and cures for these "Puzzles of the Mind". In addition, the Foundation supports its local Valleys to establish Learning Centres for Children with Dyslexia. The first Learning Centre opened in 2003 in London, Ontario, providing free, one-on-one tutoring to children with reading and comprehension difficulties associated with dyslexia. Now, with eight Learning Centres across Canada utilizing the Ortan-Gillingham method, The Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation continues with its unique approach to freely helping children learn by tailoring to their individual needs. Funding for The Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation's honourable endeavours is provided by an established endowment built, managed and supported by Scottish Rite Masons, family and friends as well as the general public. With their mission to fulfill their belief in benevolence and sharing of what they have with their fellow humans in need, the demand for Foundation funding far outstrips its means. As such, you may have been asked by your Scottish Rite friend, "Will you help us solve the "Puzzles of the Mind" with a donation?" The Foundation's continued work and belief that the human mind is key to physical, mental and spiritual well-being is surely its lasting legacy. Happy 50th Anniversary Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation of Canada! We are grateful for all of your efforts, compassion and energy that immensely impact the world, the community, and the mind. Raise the Rates 2011

01:53
Join the Fight Back! All three levels Government are looking towards cutbacks and austerity measures. The Special Diet was one of the first cuts in Ontario, along with a wage freeze for public sector workers, but these are only the first signs of the fight ahead. The 840 000 people in this province who are forced to try to survive on social assistance should not have to beg for scraps from McGuinty's table. The McGuinty Government understands what they would have to do to end poverty. The issue is for us to organize and build a movement to make them do it. Let us decide on our demands and put them before the Government in ways they simply can't ignore. For a start, let's tell them to keep their hands off the Special Diet and to raise welfare and disability rates by the 55% required to bring them back to where they were in the 1990s and to where people can live with health and dignity. Be a part of the fight back - Join the Raise the Rates Campaign Today! Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) www.ocap.ca / 416-925-6939
