One of the key components of a healthy diet is omega 3 fatty acids. This has been scientifically established and I feel is without question. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids. They are a must for our health, but our body can't produce them. There are different types of omega 3s and crucial ones -- EPA and DHA -- are primarily found in certain fish. These include: The best source are found in: Anchovies Bluefish Herring Mackerel Salmon (wild has more omega-3s than farmed) Sardines Sturgeon Lake trout Tuna Many doctors agree that it is better get omega-3 fatty acids from foods rather than supplements. But what if you don’t like fish? Then fish oil is the next best thing. A recent study by the University of Maryland Medical Center concluded that, “People with diabetes often have high triglyceride and low HDL levels. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can help lower triglycerides and apoproteins, which are markers for diabetes. They can also raise HDL. So eating foods or taking fish oil supplements may help people with diabetes. Another type of omega-3 fatty acid, ALA (from flaxseed, for example) may not have the same benefit as fish oil. Some people with diabetes have trouble converting ALA to a form of omega-3 fatty acids that the body can use. Also, some people with type 2 diabetes may have slight increases in fasting blood sugar when taking fish oil. So talk to your doctor to see if fish oil is right for you.” So it looks like fish oil is something those of us with diabetes may want to consider. But my next question is, how is fish oil made? Well, it doesn’t seem to be a difficult process actually. Fish are basically pressed with the solids and liquids being separated. The solids go on to make fishmeal for animal feed. The liquids are then separated between oil and water and the oil becomes fish oil. Some companies add antioxidants or other ingredients, so be sure to read the label. Is fish oil good for diabetes? Yes, it certainly can be. But be sure to look at the label of you supplement. Just because it says Omega 3 Fatty Acid doesn’t mean it’s all fish oil. Remember, those of us with diabetes have trouble processing ALA omega 3’s so make sure there is no flaxseed oil which is a common ingredient in Omega 3 supplements. YES, these fats are bad for you and will cause diabetes, in addition to dozens of other diseases and health problems. What you want to eat is some healthy fats: Raw nuts and seeds (hemp, flax, etc.) Avocados Coconut oil Extra virgin Macadamia nut and Olive oil Omega and fish oils Don’t heat your oils because it changes the structure of the molecule. Fish Oil Myth: Fish oil is high in PUFA and easily goes rancid. Most fish oils on the market are rancid before they get to the consumer. Where did the fish oil fad come from? Examine the concept of "need" for Omega 3 fatty acids, and questioning the idea that you need to get any types of fatty acids from fish oil at all. Studies showing negative hormonal effects too. The Reason and the beginning of this myth: Fish oil is high in DHA and EPA which are commonly seen to be beneficial for heart health by lowering blood pressure, reducing inflammation, reducing risk of strok3 and heart attack, and reduce the chance of abnormal heart rhythm. However there is little to no evidence that supports this theory and has been seen as common knowledge throughout the health industry. Instead of questioning whether or not fish oil is beneficial to health doctors have just passed down this common idea throughout the decades not realizing the detrimental effects that it can actually have on human health. The first recorded prescription of fish oil was in 1789 in Manchester for the alleviation of joint pain for an elderly woman. The woman had severe joint pain and was unable to function properly, the doctor prescribed her cod liver oil to be used topically and ingested at the same time. The issues subsided. Exactly one year later the issues came back and was alleviated once again.There were a couple of things the doctor did not take into consideration however, the first being that she was taking other medication to help with the same problem. The second thing was that the woman had the same issues at the exact same time of year which could have easily been an issue with the barometric pressure of the atmosphere during that time of year putting more pressure on the joints. All this said does fish oil really help? Is it really healthy? Fish oil is made up of almost if not purely polyunsaturated fatty acids. This is ideal for a fish that lives in a cold environment and needs a fat that is liquid at super low temperatures in order to survive. If it had saturated fat then it would stiffen up and sink straight down to the bottom of the ocean. However due to the nature of the fat this is not ideal for the human body. This means that the fat is only stable at low temperatures, when exposed to any kind of higher temperatures, or in the presence of light the fats (like omega-3) become oxidized, and produce free radicals that wreak havoc on the sensitive tissue in the human body, especially the reproductive organs, thyroid, and the brain. Obviously this mean that cooking with them is out of the question, but what about the famous fish oil supplements? The ones that are supposed to help with joint pain by lubricating your joints and help to decrease inflammation? This is a complete lie. During the manufacturing process the fish oils are exposed to both heat and light causing them to become oxidized, and then when put into storage they are exposed to eve more light making them become even more rancid. This leads to the impossibility to find a fish oil supplement that is not oxidized and thus does not contain free radicals. This actually leads to more inflammation in the human body and causes even more joint, tissue, and brain damage. What if I was able to find a fish oil supplement that was not oxidized and extracted properly and makes it all the way from the fish to me in one piece? With the likelihood of this being very slim, once you consume the fish oil, it does the exact same thing that it would in the manufacturing and storing process. Because the human body is of relatively high heat, especially compared to a fish, the fish oil oxidizes in the presence of that heat that is produced by the human body. It is actually called auto oxidation which is the automatic oxidation of the fish oil as soon as it is in the presence of the human body. Leading to the formation of the free radicals and all of the contributing downregulating effects. How educated are you on omega-3 fatty acids? Chances are, you only know about two-thirds of the story. These essential fats have been found in research studies to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis and cancers. They’ve also shown an ability to elevate mood and boost brain function as well as enhance muscle growth, fat loss and athletic performance. You may even know the two main omega-3 fats by their names, or at least their initials – docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). What you probably didn’t know is that there’s a third critical omega-3 fat: docosapentaenoic acid (DPA). Science is uncovering the specific benefits that each of these three essential fats provide. For example, DHA appears to be the most critical for enhancing muscle growth; EPA may be most important for the brain- and mood-boosting benefits of omega-3 fats; and now, it appears that DPA may be the one most important for reducing inflammation in the body and the risk of cardiovascular disease. In other words, it’s not enough to just get adequate amounts of DHA and EPA. You need sufficient doses of all three major omega-3 fats, DPA included. Although scientists have been well aware of DPA for some time, no one could confirm its major role. Now, new research is uncovering just how important this third omega-3 fat is. DPA is an elongated form of EPA. The latest science suggests that it plays an important role in reducing inflammation in the body, as well as improving cardiovascular health and even brain function. One European study found that DPA intake plays a far more significant role in lowering C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in men, and therefore lowering the risk of heart disease, than do DHA or EPA. DPA also appears to have a more direct role in blocking the production of cyclooxygenase, an enzyme that produces the prostaglandin hormones that spark inflammation. Earlier research had shown that EPA (‘E,’ not ‘D’) helps to control inflammation. But new data from the University of San Diego now shows that, in the body, EPA must first be elongated to DPA to take action and blunt inflammation. Although some of the EPA you consume will be converted into DPA, the conversion can be inhibited by many factors. Plus, research shows that even in optimal conditions, a good amount of EPA is lost during the conversion to DPA. This means the only way to ensure you’re getting an adequate dose of DPA is to supplement with it. The fish oil you choose should not only provide DPA, but a sufficient dose of it. At this time, it appears 200mg-300mg of DPA per day is adequate. Just one problem: Very few fish oil/omega-3 supplements will tell you if they contain DPA, let alone specify how much of this important omega-3 fat is in the product. But that all changes with my Omega JYM fish oil supplement. This trail was about primary prevention of cardiovascular events in diabetics. However, they included a nested trial of Omega 3s. They looked at over 9,000 patients. There was minimal difference in event rates. So, Omega 3s are done, right? Not so fast. These studies were done with just 1 gram Omega 3 supplement. These days, the supplement recommendations are for 3 to 4 grams. In addition, there is a question re: whether Omega 3s help with patients who are already on statins and proper blood pressure meds. The original trials done 20 years ago were in populations that did not have proper statin or even blood pressure medication coverage. About Dr. Brewer - Dr. Brewer started as an Emergency Doctor. After seeing too many patients coming in dead from early heart attacks, he went to Johns Hopkins to learn Preventive Medicine. He went on to run the post-graduate training program (residency) in Preventive Medicine at Hopkins. From there, he made a career of practicing and managing preventive medicine and primary care clinics. His later role in this area was Chief Medical Officer for Premise, which has over 500 primary care/ prevention clinics. He was also the Chief Medical Officer for MDLIVE, the second largest telemedicine company. More recently, he founded PrevMed, a heart attack, stroke, and diabetes prevention clinic.
