I get a lot of questions about bipolar medications and, in this video, I answer them; including how they changed my life for the better. If you’re recently diagnosed, one of the biggest problems is finding the right medication for bipolar disorder that works specifically for you. Unfortunately, this can be extremely difficult and exhausting. After my diagnosis of bipolar 2, the first step was trying various medications to see what worked and what didn't. Unfortunately, the side effects of many of these bipolar medications can be severe, such as weight gain, extreme drowsiness, and other effects that hinder a person's ability to function. There was a point that the bipolar medications seemed to only increase my depressive and emotional behavior. I was incapable of communicating properly with those around me. Finally, I went to my doctors and demanded to find the right routine of medications. It took me around 5 years to find a steady regimen of medications that efficiently managed my bipolar disorder without dampening my personality and increasing my weight. I still experience highs and lows on medication, however, I have more control over it, whereas before my condition was in control of me. Hopefully, in the future, research will uncover new treatment methods with fewer side effects. Until then, do not lose hope and continue communicating with medical professionals seeking the right routine of bipolar medications for you. In the comments, I hope you'll share your experience with bipolar meds and, in what ways, have they helped you. ------- Hannah posts a new video every Monday morning on the HealthyPlace YouTube Channel. I share my experiences throughout my process of finding the right medication for me. I'll talk about my initial personal stigma against medication, and how the view has changed over time. From the intense side effects of Abilify, rash scares from Lamictal, to weight gain from Depakote. I want to remind everyone that their experiences with these same medications could be completely different. I hope my story inspires people to have more open conversations with their psychiatrists on what actually works. I have heard countless times of people with mental heath issues never speaking up that their treatment isn't work. My medication for bipolar disorder is just part of my daily routine now. I don't really think much of it anymore. I don't like taking meds, but hey, I'm not that crazy about shoving contacts in my eyes every morning either. But I am willing to do these daily chores because they allow me to live a more productive and happy life. Please visit www.blissify.org for more video and written content about mental health. Treatment of Bipolar Disorder Treatment for manic depression consists of a lot of trial and error. Patients are usually best treated with between three and five medications. Some patients may respond well to just one medication, but typically, these medications work best when the effects are combined. Mulitple medications can also ensure lower doses of each prescription are needed, thus decreasing the risk of unwanted side effects. There are also what is called atypical antipsychotics. These medications work well to stop the swings, particularly manic episodes. Mood Stabilizers/Anti-Epileptics The benefits of using anti-epileptic medications to treat patients were actually stumbled upon by accident. Neurologists started to notice their epileptic patients becoming less depressed when taking these medications. Eventually, they were approved for treating this disorder in the USA. These prescriptions are usually the foundation of treatment. The most often used prescription medications are Lithium: Lithium has been the most used for manic depression for decades. Depakote: Depakote can cause weight gain and sedation. Lamictal: The least amount of side effects of most of these medications. Highly preferred. Tegretol: Minimal side effects. Atypical Antipsychotics Atypical Antipsychotics should be used in conjunction with mood stabilizing medications like those listed above. This family of medicines can have a paradoxical effect on a patient if not combined with appropriate other pharmacology. If used with a mood stabilizer, this combination can prevent you from becoming as deeply depressed. If used alone, these medications can cause your mania to become worse. The most commonly used Atypical Antipsychotics are: Zyprexa (Olanzapine): Can cause weight gain and sedation. Seroquel (Quetiapine): Weight gain and sedation possible, but not as prevalant as Zyprexa. Latuda (Lurasidone): This one is a new medication. The side effects seem to be less severe. Supplements There are also some over the counter supplements you can add to your daily regimen which helps decrease the intensity of depressed states and shorten the amount of time you will suffer a depressive episode. Your psychiatrist will be able to inform you on the proper therapeutic dose. Some of these are: Fish Oil with EPA L-Folate (Methylfolate) N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) Pharmacology is imperative for manic and depressed patients. However, it is not the only method of treating this disorder. TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) has shown promise in treating mania and depression. There are minimal, if any, side effects associated with TMS. If you're suffering and live in the New York City area, call Dr. Robert D. McMullen at 212 362-9635 to schedule an appointment. These are all the psychiatric drugs I've taken for Depression and Bipolar Disorder. The side effects going onto each drug and increasing the dosage are really awful and made me sick all the time. But I LOVE the result and it's worth fighting through all the acne, exhaustion, flu-like symptoms, dehydration, etc. I have Bipolar 2 and experience mostly depressive episodes with lighter hypomanic times. I hope you enjoyed the video! Here is a link to test your knowledge: http://empowern.com/2015/08/bipolar-medication-lithium/ Lithium belongs to the drug class: antimanic agents and it is sold under the US brand names: Lithobid, Eskalith, Eskalith-CR. More than 5.7 million American adults or 2.6 percent of the population age 18 or older in any given year have bipolar disorder. Lithium is helping some of this American. It has become one of the first and widely used psychiatric drugs for the treatment of bipolar disorder in the United States, since its approval in the 1970s. It also has become one of the most studied psychiatric medications. Indication: Lithium is an effective drug for bipolar disorder as its properties help to prevent, as well as stabilize, manic-depressive mood swings that occur in this psychiatric condition. By controlling mood disorder, it also reduces the risk of suicide. This is an advantage of lithium that is lacking in some other drugs. But it is more effective in preventing depression than it is in preventing mania. However, it needs time to develop and reach its ideal therapeutic level in the body before it induces any effects. Usually it takes about 1-3 weeks, however, in the case of sudden or acute bipolar episodes, if lithium hasn’t reached its optimum level in the client’s body, it can be prescribed along with other medications for effectiveness. Lithium can also be prescribed for other psychiatric disorders besides bipolar disorder. It can be useful when other drugs fail in conditions such as schizophrenia, major depression, and certain psychiatric problems in children. Mechanism of Action: Although lithium had been used for more than 50 years in the treatment of bipolar disorder, its mechanism of action was unknown; until 1998. Scientists didn’t know the cause of mood swings in bipolar disorder either. A study made in 1998, by a group of researchers from Wisconsin University shed light on how lithium works and why it is effective. It was concluded that lithium acts on certain nerve cells in the brain and the receptors of the neurotransmitter glutamate. Lithium has a dual effect on these receptors, and using this, it helps to regulate the level of glutamate between cells, preventing it from reaching too high or too low concentrations. According to the director of this research, Dr. Lowell Hokin, who is also a school professor of pharmacology at Wisconsin University; too little glutamate between neurons cause depression, while excessive amounts of glutamate cause mania. But it is also believed that there are more causes and factors involved in these disorders besides the level of glutamate, but nevertheless, the study has been very helpful as it has uncovered the fundamental causes of bipolar disorder.

For many of us, one of the most troubling bipolar medication side-effects is weight gain. Unfortunately, weight gain from bipolar medications is common and frustrating to those of us who use them to maintain our mental health. I have bipolar 2 and after I started taking medications, I immediately noticed a change in my body. It was not just a few pounds, but up to 30 pounds in one month. Imagine how that made me feel. It got to the point where I told my psychiatrist that if I continued gaining weight, I was going to quit taking my bipolar 2 medications. I know you might think that’s drastic but, in fact, many people stop taking their bipolar medications due to weight gain and other side-effects. It may not be the right thing to do, however, they just can’t take the weight gain or other side-effects anymore. Self-awareness and honesty is essential when you live with bipolar disorder; that includes being honest with your doctor. My psychiatrist worked on finding a better routine of bipolar medications and I was able to lose some of that weight and get closer to my normal size. It is not that I refuse to deal with any bipolar medication side effects, but gaining that amount of weight made me feel out of control, insecure and depressed. I still have to make medication adjustments which can cause a little weight gain, but I always get back in shape eventually. I’ll be talking more about that in an upcoming video. What is your experience with the side effects of bipolar medication? Have you experienced weight gain? Have you been able to do something about the weight gain? Please share your thoughts and experiences or do a response video and send it in to firstname.lastname@example.org. See you next week! Hannah -- Subscribe to our channel. Visit http://lawsuits.lawinfo.com/Depakote/index.html to learn more. "The drug Depakote has been on the market for decades and has been used successfully to treat patients suffering from epileptic seizures. In addition to seizures, it has also been used to relieve migraines, and even help those afflicted with bipolar disorder. As with any drug, a person taking Depakote may experience minor side effects that can include headaches, nausea, joint pain and sleeplessness. Unfortunately, the use of Depakote has also been linked with causing severe birth defects. In a small percentage of documented cases women who took Depakote while pregnant gave birth to children with cleft palates, spina bifida, and even malformed hands. In extreme and unfortunate situations, the drug has been linked with fetal death. If you or a loved one is taking Depakote, be sure to consult with your doctor and take great care if you are, or think you may be, pregnant."

Today I talk about the 5 common misconceptions about bipolar disorder. 1. That there are only manic or depressive episodes in bipolar disorder 2. That bipolar II is a "milder" form of bipolar disorder 3. That mood swings during the day mean you have bipolar disorder 4. That all bipolar patients have mania 5. That people with bipolar disorder are unreliable I hope this video helps clarify what bipolar disorder is and what it can look and feel like for different people. Please share this video so you can help stop the stigma and misconceptions surrounding bipolar disorder. About Bipolar disorder: Also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. Symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. They are different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through from time to time. Bipolar disorder symptoms can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide. But bipolar disorder can be treated, and people with this illness can lead full and productive lives. Most scientists agree that there is no single cause. Rather, many factors likely act together to produce the illness or increase risk. Genetics Bipolar disorder tends to run in families. Some research has suggested that people with certain genes are more likely to develop bipolar disorder than others. Children with a parent or sibling who has bipolar disorder are much more likely to develop the illness, compared with children who do not have a family history of bipolar disorder. However, most children with a family history of bipolar disorder will not develop the illness. Brain-imaging tools, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), allow researchers to take pictures of the living brain at work. These tools help scientists study the brain's structure and activity. Some imaging studies show how the brains of people with bipolar disorder may differ from the brains of healthy people or people with other mental disorders. For example, one study using MRI found that the pattern of brain development in children with bipolar disorder was similar to that in children with "multi-dimensional impairment," a disorder that causes symptoms that overlap somewhat with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. This suggests that the common pattern of brain development may be linked to general risk for unstable moods. Signs & Symptoms People with bipolar disorder experience unusually intense emotional states that occur in distinct periods called "mood episodes." Each mood episode represents a drastic change from a person’s usual mood and behavior. An overly joyful or overexcited state is called a manic episode, and an extremely sad or hopeless state is called a depressive episode. Sometimes, a mood episode includes symptoms of both mania and depression. This is called a mixed state. People with bipolar disorder also may be explosive and irritable during a mood episode. Extreme changes in energy, activity, sleep, and behavior go along with these changes in mood. Doctors diagnose bipolar disorder using guidelines from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, the symptoms must be a major change from your normal mood or behavior. There are four basic types of bipolar disorder: Bipolar I Disorder—defined by manic or mixed episodes that last at least seven days, or by manic symptoms that are so severe that the person needs immediate hospital care. Usually, depressive episodes occur as well, typically lasting at least 2 weeks. Bipolar II Disorder—defined by a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes, but no full-blown manic or mixed episodes. Bipolar Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (BP-NOS)—diagnosed when symptoms of the illness exist but do not meet diagnostic criteria for either bipolar I or II. However, the symptoms are clearly out of the person's normal range of behavior. Cyclothymic Disorder, or Cyclothymia—a mild form of bipolar disorder. People with cyclothymia have episodes of hypomania as well as mild depression for at least 2 years. However, the symptoms do not meet the diagnostic requirements for any other type of bipolar disorder. A new study has found that Lithium outperforms newer mood stabilizers in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Patients taking lithium had lower rates of self-harm and unintentional injury compared to those taking other bipolar drugs, such as Depakote, Zyprexa, or Seroquel. Joseph Hayes is the lead researcher and is a fellow of psychiatry at University College London. Hayes explained to UPI, "This is important because people with bipolar disorder are 15 times more likely to die by suicide and six times more likely to die by accidental injury than the general population." Although taking lithium incurs a greater risk of kidney and underactive thyroid problems, Hayes says the upside to this is that patients must be monitored more closely, which means they are seen by their psychiatrists more often. I got cut short cause I heard my brothers come in and my videos are secret!! ECT isn't like how they show it on TV! You don't flop around like a fish out of water. You are sedated and the only muscle that may twitch is just between your eyes. It's an effective treatment but often just a last resort.

How to Heal Your Brain from Bipolar/Depressive Disorders Food, Elimination, Movement, Social Health, and Health Care all play a part in our mental, and physical health. Lifestyle has more impact on our emotions and health than genetics. Depression does not stem from a change in chemical reactions in the brain- in fact more than 80 percent of the problem stems from the gut, and how the nutrients are processed and distributed to the rest of the body. If you want to combat depressive disorders than do not seek medication to 'correct' brain chemistry- start with changing your diet.

Visit http://lawsuits.lawinfo.com/Depakote/index.html to learn more about Depakote. Depakote, a drug commonly used to treat epilepsy, migraines and even bipolar disorder, has been linked to birth defects. While Depakote is meant to help treat people and alleviate their medical condition, it is also linked to some harmful side effects. Depakote, also known as divalproex sodium or valproic acid, has been approved by the FDA since 2000; however, in the ensuing years the FDA has issued several warnings regarding the drug's side effects if taken by pregnant women. These side effects include: neural tube defects, cardiovascular malformations, craniofacial defects, cognitive impairments, spina bifida and more. The FDA now warns against women taking Depakote during pregnancy. Lawsuits are forming against Abbott Laboratories, the manufacturer. Abbott Labs already entered a guilty plea with the US department of Justice to settle charges against improper marketing of the drug. They agreed to pay over $1.5 billion dollars for promoting Depakote for uses that were not approved by the FDA, such as for the treatment of schizophrenia. If you took Depakote while you were pregnant, you should speak with a Depakote attorney as soon as possible to learn of your legal options. If your child was born with a birth defect, you may be able to recover for medical costs and potentially even pain and suffering.

Your medication Divalproex Divalproex sodium is also known by the brand name: Depakote, Depakote ER and Depakote Sprinkle capsules. Divalproex sodium comes in 125, 250, and 500 mg tablets, 250 and 500mg extended release tablets, and 125mg sprinkle capsule. Divalproex sodium is most commonly used to treat seizures, bipolar problems, and prevent migraine headaches. No matter what your doctor has you taking it for, divalproex sodium is taken by mouth with or without food 1 to 4 times a day. If upset stomach occurs, take divalproex sodium with food. If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. For best results take each dose at the same time each day. Extended-release tablets must be swallowed whole, do not split or break tablets. Divalproex Sprinkle capsules may be swallowed whole or the capsule may be opened and sprinkled on small amount (1 teaspoonful) of soft food like pudding, or applesauce. This is to be used immediately (do not store or chew). Some common side effects with divalproex sodium include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tiredness, weakness, tremor, dizziness, blurry eye sight, and loss of hunger. Some less common side effects include swelling of the arms or legs, high or low blood pressure, weight gain, and constipation. Do not take divalproex sodium if: you are pregnant, have liver problems or under the age of 2 years. This medication should not be abruptly discontinued because of the possibility of increasing seizure frequency. While taking divalproex sodium, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if: • You have signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, tightness of the chest, etc.) • You have dark urine, are feeling tired, are not hungry, have an upset stomach, are throwing up, or have yellowing of the skin or eyes. • Are pregnant as this drug may cause very bad birth defects. If you are or become pregnant and take this drug for seizures or bipolar disorder, talk to your doctor to see if you need to keep taking this drug. All forms of divalproex sodium including the liquid needs to be stored at room temperature in a dry place away from children or pets.

What it is Like to Have Bipolar, Manic Depression http://www.truehope.com Jacob began to have feelings of depression as a teenager after he had been bullied. After removing himself from that negative environment, the depression did not go away. At age 15, he also began to experience manic tendencies. Jacob would cycle from one extreme to the other. He would have manic bouts when he was the life of the party, to being so depressed that he didn't want anyone around. Jacob also began to develop serious levels of anxiety to the point where he had to see a physical therapist from extreme muscle tension. It was at this point that he decided to see a psychiatrist, who diagnosed him with depression and anxiety. She prescribed Jacob Zoloft, which put him into a state of mania. When he went back to see his psychiatrist, he was re diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She also prescribed Depakote for the manic symptoms, which threw him back into depression. She then prescribed Abilify, which gave Jacob akathisia, so it was immediately removed. Trileptal was then tried with no success. Zyprexa was then implemented with serious side effects of drowsiness. A number of other medications were tried, such as lithium, Seroquel and Lamictal. Jacob began to get frustrated at the guessing game of prescribing medications. It got so bad that he began to experience suicidal thoughts. One day, Jacob went on the internet and looked up bipolar alternatives. He came across a company called Truehope that had a natural product called EMPowerplus, which is used for providing nutritional support for mental and physical well-being. He ordered Truehope EMPowerplus, and was able to come off all his medications. Jacob reports that he is doing better than he ever has. He also says that he has never been so stable, all because of Truehope's vitamin and mineral solution, Empowerplus.

As some of you might recall, one of my neurologists put me on Depakote. This is the last chance medication to help prevent my migraines and idiopathic neuropathy. Well, I can't say it worked wonders, as I did have an aura. Plus, it is making me gain weight. This is unacceptable! Has anyone else out there had a weight gain issue on any daily medication? Let me know in the comments below. Contact: Illinoismom21@gmail.com Please be kind to each other in the comment section. :) Thank you so much for your support. It means a lot to me.
