Be careful: The First Signs And Symptoms Of Lung Cancer That You Should Not Ignore First. Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in men and women, and the leading cause of cancer death according to the American Cancer Society. While you may think that smokers are the only segment of the population at risk for lung cancer, you may be surprised to know that twenty percent of lung cancer deaths are people who do not smoke. The American Cancer Society explains that air pollution, secondhand smoke, gas, and cancer-causing agents, such as asbestos and gas oil, are the main risk factors for lung cancer. The best defense against lung cancer is to know the first signs and symptoms. The sooner you visit your doctor and the sooner the cancer is diagnosed, the better chance of recovery. Continue reading to learn about the first signs and symptoms of lung cancer. Frequent illness. If you have noticed a spike in your frequency of illnesses such as colds, flu, bronchitis or pneumonia, you should talk to your doctor about the possible causes of your depressed immune system. Dr. Kelley says that when cancer sits in lung tissue and bronchial tubes, the lungs become more susceptible to the disease. Unexplained weight loss. If you have lost interest in food or feel full quickly after eating, lung cancer may be affecting your appetite. Dr. Kelley recommends having a notebook to record symptoms and possible causes, such as food poisoning, food allergy, PMS in women, or gastrointestinal diseases. If the cause is unexplained, you need the attention of your doctor. Pain of the fingers. You may be surprised to know that thick and painful fingertips are a typical symptom of lung cancer. This is because lung tumors release chemicals in the bloodstream that stimulate the growth of bones and tissues at the fingertips and under the nails. Dr. Kelley says that you should tell your doctor about any thickening, swelling, or tapping on your fingers. Pain in the torso. If you experience persistent dull pain in the chest, shoulder, back, or abdomen, you may be experiencing direct pressure from a lung tumor. According to Dr. Kelley, chest pain is a symptom in one in four patients with lung cancer. Hoarsely. If your voice sounds a little hoarse or if you feel pain when swallowing or talking, you may have lung cancer. NHS Choices says that this common symptom is a reason to call your doctor, especially when accompanied by a persistent cough, wheezing or coughing up blood. Shortness of breath. This is a common symptom in women who are often misdiagnosed as a side effect of age or inactivity. Shortness of breath is a sign of adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer in women. Weakness in the upper limbs. Weakness in the upper limbs, loss of coordination and muscle cramps are all symptoms of paraneoplastic syndrome, a condition related to lung cancer in which hormonal substances are secreted by tumors. Breast growth in men. One less talked about symptom in male lung cancer patients is enlargement of the breast around and under the nipple. Dr. Kelley explains that this is a symptom of paraneoplastic syndrome, caused by the release of hormones, proteins and other substances into the bloodstream. https://youtu.be/cALmN0f5w_g

Lungs cancer | What can cause Lung Cancer The main culprit in the development of lung cancer is the use of cigarettes, since about 90% of all cases of this type of cancer happens in smokers, and the risk increases according to the number of cigarettes smoked per day and the number of years if you are a smoker. However, lung cancer can also occur in people who have never smoked, especially those who are in frequent contact with cigarette smoke or other chemicals such as radon, arsenic, or beryllium, for example, although this risk is much lower than that of who smokes.....For more watch video in detail. Amother-of-two lost her battle with cancer aged 33 just days after giving birth and marrying the love of her life.Tracey Keers, 33, was forced to deliver daughter Kyla prematurely at 28 weeks after doctors found she had terminal cancer. She and her husband Steven, who also have a seven-year-old son called Kieran, got married at the end of March in James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.Tracey died in Mr Keers' arms on Sunday. The 35-year-old widower said his wife, who worked at Durham University, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016.She endured a mastectomy followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy before going into remission in July last year.Mr Keers, from Seaton Carew, said: 'We knew we wanted another baby, so we had IVF treatment and successfully had 13 eggs frozen.'But she fell pregnant naturally in September and we were absolutely elated because we didn’t think that would happen.' However the couple’s joy was short lived as Tracey began to have severe headaches and sickness.Twenty-four weeks into her pregnancy doctors broke the devastating news that Tracey’s cancer had returned and was terminal.Steven, who works for a games company, said: 'They gave her three to six months but, Tracey being Tracey, she never gave up and was always fighting.' Four weeks later, Tracey started having seizures and doctors needed to deliver Kyla, weighing 2lb, by caesarean section on March 19.Steven said: 'They said she might not wake up from the c-section, but luckily she did come through it.'Tracey was so worried that she might never get to see her daughter, but she did.' Just over a week later on March 30, Good Friday, the couple were married at the hospital.Steven said: 'The staff said because it was a weekend we could use the day room.'I wanted to make it as special as I could for her, so I contacted friends and we had the room all decorated.'A bridal shop donated a dress and I got suits for me and Kieran.'I think she was quite shocked when she saw the room.' However, Tracey continued to deteriorate and on April 8 her breathing started to change.Steven said: 'I got up onto the bed and held Tracey in my arms with her head on my chest and she passed away peacefully.'When I had to tell Kieran it was the hardest thing in the world I have ever had to do, it was heartbreaking.' Steven and Tracey, who had been together ten years, knew each other as pupils at Brierton School in Hartlepool.Steven said: 'She was my best friend, we were always together. We didn’t go out much, we were happy at home, we were family people.'I slept by her bed at the hospital for four weeks because I didn’t want to leave her, so it is hitting my now I am home and it seems so so quiet.' Steven said the family wants to thank all the incredible staff at James Cook hospital who cared for Tracey and are still looking after Kyla, who will be in hospital for another two months. When Tracey was first diagnosed with cancer she started a blog about her journey to help people understa

https://media.ccc.de/v/froscon2018-2260-automated_lung_tumor_diagnosis_in_medical_image_data_-_methods_challenges_and_perspectives Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with lung tumors being the most frequent cause of cancer deaths in men as well as one of the most common cancers diagnosed in woman. Analysis and evaluation of medical image data such as computed tomography (CT) scans are commonly used to support experts in their diagnosis and are crucial for the selection of further treatment. The systematic detection of tumors by an automated system is a challenging task, as several sub-steps such as preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction and classification have to be considered. We present state of the art methods and solutions for each of these sub-steps as well as a novel approach for a complete automated system for tumor detection and diagnosis in lung CT-Scans. We will explain and compare the different approaches for segmentation and classification used in the context of the SPIE-AAPM Lung CT Challenge. At last, we briefly present the methodologies and results of our approach. We explain how different image processing methods such as morphological operations, connected component labeling and marker-based watershed transformation can be combined to archive a successful segmentation of lung CT-scans using the open source software library OpenCV, while also discussing challenges and limitations of the proposed method. 1 Identify what each bar on the x-axis represents, e.g. the bar on the left represents non-smokers and the bar on the right represents smokers; 2 Identify what the y-axis represents, which in this case is the ‘death rates due to lung cancer’; 3 Put your ruler in line with the top of the bar (horizontally) and read across to the y-axis; 3 Work out the y-axis scale; 4 Identify the numbers for each bar, and write these numbers on the top of each bar; 5 Interpret the numbers and write your first sentence about the big picture, e.g. non-smokers have far lower death rates due to lung cancer compared to smokers; 6 Include data to justify your interpretation in your second sentence, e.g. the death rate due to lung cancer for non-smokers is 100 (per 100,000) in contrast to smokers, for which it is 1,100 (per 100,000).

Lung cancer may not be the most common type of cancer, but it's the most deadly. Thanks to low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans, however, lung cancer can now be found earlier, giving patients a better chance of survival. Recent results of a study that followed patients for five years found 20% fewer lung cancer deaths among heavy smokers screened with LDCT scans. Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) began offering this screening in early 2012 to patients who meet certain criteria (see table below). A ketogenic diet reduces the risk of mutations occurring within cells along with the formation of free radicals, both of which are causes of colon, lung and breast cancer. The ketogenic diet reduces symptoms in patients with metabolic conditions because it lowers the energy generated from the breakdown of glucose found in simple and complex carbohydrates. Cancer cells thrive off of the energy created from glucose fermentation, which is also called anaerobic metabolism due to the lack of oxygenation. Examples of ketogenic approved foods include: pastured beef and dairy products (including eggs), organic poultry, and wild fish & seafood. Vegetables and fruits low in carbohydrates (including cabbage, asparagus, lemon and limes), healthy fats such as avocados and coconut oil, along with a few nuts and seeds are usually permitted. Committing to a ketogenic diet can delay the development of tumors and increase the survival rate for patients by greater than 50 percent. Using intermittent fasting where you consume meals between a 4 to 8-hour window each day can be a very effective way to get into ketosis. Fasting is an anti-inflammatory, immune strengthening activity as it reduces overall blood sugar and enhances ketone body formation. =========== =============== =============== Thanks for watching! When patients diagnosed with cancer are admitted to the hospital, many times we see them at their lowest. From chemotherapy and radiation treatments to surgeries and diagnostic test. It can be an emotional roller coster for not only the patient but also all of their loved ones… including their medical staff… I remember about 2 months ago, I was feeling down. Normally I’m an extremely upbeat person. However, working on the oncology unit was taking it’s tole on me. I realized, that I was mistakingly focusing on some of the patients who didn’t make it. Unfortunately, many of the patients who recover fully do not make their ways back in the the hospital. I can’t blame, the hospital would not be high on my list also. Recently, I attended a fundraising event with my husband and I heard a beautiful dynamic speaker by the name of Camille. Don’t tell anyone, but I actually cried while she was talking… By the time she finished speaking, I knew I had to ask her to share her story on my channel. I waited for 2 hours to talk with her and after the crowds had died down, she graciously accepted my offer. Spending time with Camille was like taking a breath of fresh air. Imagine walking into someones home for an interview and a bubbly 60 year old greets you with tons of energy, gorgeous hair and a wholesome outlook and love for life. This is who Camlile is, just a loving bundle of joy - I left her house inspired and grateful. I hope you feel the same way after listening to her story. Camille was given one of the worst diagnosis… Had I been reading her chart, I unfortunately would have not spent too much time with it… I have never met anyone that survived Pancreatic Cancer, much less; Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with metastasis aka METS. The first doctor she went to told her that she that with stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with spots on in her lungs, liver and kidneys; there was nothing they could do and she was to go home and prepare to die. However, one thing that she strongly recommends is to get a second opinion, which is what she did. She went to University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer center. She found a doctor that believed in her and she trusted him. She will be the first to tell you that her story is not the norm and oftentimes told me how it hurts her to know that many others have had the same diagnosis and not the same outcome. However, her main focus is to share that no matter how bad things seem, you can always and MUST always have hope. Thankfully Camille is not alone these days. Thanks to advanced research and better treatment options. The bike ride event that Camille and I speak about in the video is a Fundraising event. Events like these help organizations raise money to continue research and be positioned to deliver specialized treatment options. Each persons cancer is different and events like these help us do a small part to help ensure much needed progress. I hope you decide to join us. Please read bike ride information below and email me with any questions: Caroline@EmpoweRN.com See you soon! xoxo ~Caroline Fundraising Bike Ride Information: Please join Camille and I February , 11th 2017 for the fundraising bike ride. If you click on the link below scroll down to a button that says “Join My Team.” After you click on the button, you will be taken to another page that gives you multiple options on different fundraising activities. Camille and I will be doing the 14 mile bike ride. Don’t worry, it is not a race and as long as you have a decent bike you probably do not have to prepare much for it. At least I didn’t lol. The minimum fundraising donation for the bike ride is $250 - however you can reserve your spot for $150 and raise the rest later if you would like. All proceeds will be donated to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer which is South Florida's leader in cancer diagnosis and provides state-of-the-art treatment as well as follow-up care. They also have an advanced research department, which is vital to discovering better treatment options, which in turn will help us save lives. Here is what I did: I purchased the $150 bike ride fee. Then, I purchased two of the $50 Counting Crows concert tickets. I went last year and it was a lot of fun, so I think it is worth the money anyways. Then, just to start my page I paid an additional $10, this is not necessary though. Since I did this last year I know how much fun it is going to be, so I hope you decide to join Camille and I! https://fundraisers.hakuapp.com/teams/team-hurricanes-hurricane-camille By the way, if you only want to donate… every single dollar helps! No donation is too small. Thank you for watching and thank you Camille for sharing your beautiful energy and message of hope to us all. Happy Holidays, ~Caroline

John T. Hamm, M.D., Medical Director of the Norton Cancer Institute Research Program, answers the question, how is lung cancer diagnosed? The next step is either a chest x-ray or a CT scan of the chest. Chest X-rays are very simple, meaning, it's usually done in the office. You stand up and two pictures are done and that's that. It's not that sensitive for lung cancer though. What's usually done now is a CT scan and CT scans are X-rays usually done in a hospital or outpatient facility and you go in and lay on a table and the table kind of moves you in and out of this x-ray machine while they take these cuts. It's very quick, it takes about 30 seconds nowadays. So, there are some people we know that are at higher-than-normal risk for developing lung cancer, people that have smoked twenty years or more, a pack a day or more. They have a high risk of developing lung cancer and we know that if we do, what are called annual CT scans, are these X-rays at the chest once a year then we find more lung cancers, we find them earlier and more people are cured of their lung cancer than if we simply wait for symptoms to develop. Often when the symptoms develop that signs that it's spread already. The prognosis is best for early stage lung cancer; it’s potentially curable. Late-stage lung cancer is not generally curable. Three New Drugs have been developed to combat cancer that resists conventional treatment methods. According to a research published by the Weizmann Institute of Science in central Israel, researchers planted cancerous cells in mice, and then treated them with three drugs called Tagrisso, Erbitux and Herceptin. Following the treatment, the tumours shrunk and did not grow back as long as the mice received the treatment. These drugs have been approved for human use.

While the vast majority of lung cancer cases are linked to tobacco, more and more non-smokers are diagnosed with this deadly disease. “There seems to be kind of an increase over the last twenty years in lung cancers in non-smokers. We see now more women, more younger people, and more non-smokers,” says Dr. Lowell Hart, who is an oncologist on medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System. Non-smokers are more likely to get a slower growing form of lung cancer, one with a driver mutation, compared to people who smoked. “Cigarette smoke, tobacco smoke, has a lot of carcinogens in the smoke. So these can cause lots and lots of mutation in the lung tissue that leads to cancer. For the patients that haven’t been smokers, they more often will have a driver mutation. One gene goes bad in the lung tissue and drives the cancer,” says Dr. Hart. As doctors get a better look at non-smoking lung cancer, they’ve identified better treatment options - therapy that identifies the precise driver and directly attacks it. “For some of these mutations we now have good treatments that we can give without necessarily having to use chemotherapy on. We now have ways of shutting down some of those gene pathways and there’s more things coming out all the time,” says Dr. Hart. The closer researchers look, the more variations they are finding. “When I show a pie chart and talk about lung cancer there used to be just small cell type and non-small cell type. Nowadays they’re cutting this pie into smaller and smaller pieces so that we have more targeted treatment,” says Dr. Hart. The end goal is to reveal solutions to make lung cancer livable.
