Be careful: The First Signs And Symptoms Of Lung Cancer That You Should Not Ignore First. Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in men and women, and the leading cause of cancer death according to the American Cancer Society. While you may think that smokers are the only segment of the population at risk for lung cancer, you may be surprised to know that twenty percent of lung cancer deaths are people who do not smoke. The American Cancer Society explains that air pollution, secondhand smoke, gas, and cancer-causing agents, such as asbestos and gas oil, are the main risk factors for lung cancer. The best defense against lung cancer is to know the first signs and symptoms. The sooner you visit your doctor and the sooner the cancer is diagnosed, the better chance of recovery. Continue reading to learn about the first signs and symptoms of lung cancer. Frequent illness. If you have noticed a spike in your frequency of illnesses such as colds, flu, bronchitis or pneumonia, you should talk to your doctor about the possible causes of your depressed immune system. Dr. Kelley says that when cancer sits in lung tissue and bronchial tubes, the lungs become more susceptible to the disease. Unexplained weight loss. If you have lost interest in food or feel full quickly after eating, lung cancer may be affecting your appetite. Dr. Kelley recommends having a notebook to record symptoms and possible causes, such as food poisoning, food allergy, PMS in women, or gastrointestinal diseases. If the cause is unexplained, you need the attention of your doctor. Pain of the fingers. You may be surprised to know that thick and painful fingertips are a typical symptom of lung cancer. This is because lung tumors release chemicals in the bloodstream that stimulate the growth of bones and tissues at the fingertips and under the nails. Dr. Kelley says that you should tell your doctor about any thickening, swelling, or tapping on your fingers. Pain in the torso. If you experience persistent dull pain in the chest, shoulder, back, or abdomen, you may be experiencing direct pressure from a lung tumor. According to Dr. Kelley, chest pain is a symptom in one in four patients with lung cancer. Hoarsely. If your voice sounds a little hoarse or if you feel pain when swallowing or talking, you may have lung cancer. NHS Choices says that this common symptom is a reason to call your doctor, especially when accompanied by a persistent cough, wheezing or coughing up blood. Shortness of breath. This is a common symptom in women who are often misdiagnosed as a side effect of age or inactivity. Shortness of breath is a sign of adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer in women. Weakness in the upper limbs. Weakness in the upper limbs, loss of coordination and muscle cramps are all symptoms of paraneoplastic syndrome, a condition related to lung cancer in which hormonal substances are secreted by tumors. Breast growth in men. One less talked about symptom in male lung cancer patients is enlargement of the breast around and under the nipple. Dr. Kelley explains that this is a symptom of paraneoplastic syndrome, caused by the release of hormones, proteins and other substances into the bloodstream. https://youtu.be/cALmN0f5w_g

한국영화사와 함께한 '영원한 스타' 신성일 Legendary Korean actor Shin Sung-il passed away last Sunday at the age of 81. He was one of Korea's most well-known actors and had appeared in hundreds of films. Hong Yoo has the details. Actor Shin Sung-il, who had won the hearts of many from the 1960s onwards with his handsome appearance and intelligence, passed away on Sunday at the age of 81. "Even when he was going through so much pain, he was talking about how movies should be made. It was so sad. His last words to me were 'thank you' and 'sorry'." He had been diagnosed with lung cancer in June 2017 and was undergoing chemotherapy when his condition recently deteriorated. Shin Sung-il made his acting debut in 1960 with the film "A Romantic Papa", and four years later, he had his first big hit in director Kim Ki-duk's film "The Barefooted Young". He was a top star through the 1960s and 1970s and appeared in more than 520 movies over his 38-year acting career. Shin also took an interest in politics. In 2000, he became a member of the National Assembly but was later arrested for taking bribes in connection with the 2003 Daegu Universiade. And in 2011,he controversially published his autobiography in which he wrote about having an affair. Last year, Shin revealed he had been diagnosed with lung cancer. But he never let go of his passion for movies, and walked the red carpet of the Pusan International Film Festival last month. Hong Yoo, Arirang News. https://media.ccc.de/v/froscon2018-2260-automated_lung_tumor_diagnosis_in_medical_image_data_-_methods_challenges_and_perspectives Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with lung tumors being the most frequent cause of cancer deaths in men as well as one of the most common cancers diagnosed in woman. Analysis and evaluation of medical image data such as computed tomography (CT) scans are commonly used to support experts in their diagnosis and are crucial for the selection of further treatment. The systematic detection of tumors by an automated system is a challenging task, as several sub-steps such as preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction and classification have to be considered. We present state of the art methods and solutions for each of these sub-steps as well as a novel approach for a complete automated system for tumor detection and diagnosis in lung CT-Scans. We will explain and compare the different approaches for segmentation and classification used in the context of the SPIE-AAPM Lung CT Challenge. At last, we briefly present the methodologies and results of our approach. We explain how different image processing methods such as morphological operations, connected component labeling and marker-based watershed transformation can be combined to archive a successful segmentation of lung CT-scans using the open source software library OpenCV, while also discussing challenges and limitations of the proposed method. However, lung cancer can also occur in people who have never smoked, especially those who are in frequent contact with cigarette smoke or other chemicals such as radon, arsenic, or beryllium, for example, although this risk is much lower than that of who smokes.....For more watch video in detail. Coughing up Blood If you are coughing up blood (hemoptysis), whether the amount is small or large, see your doctor as soon as possible to find out the cause. 3. Wheezing Sound When airways become constricted, blocked or inflamed, it results in a wheezing or whistling sound when you breathe out. 4. Shortness of Breath Being short of breath or becoming easily winded may also indicate lung cancer. About 9 out of 10 people who have advanced lung cancer experience this symptom. 5. Chest and Bone Pain Chest pain that worsens with coughing, laughing or deep breathing is often an early symptom of lung cancer. This happens when the cancer spreads to the lining of a lung. 6. Frequent Chest Infections If you frequently suffer from chest infections like bronchitis or pneumonia despite taking antibiotics, it can be a sign of overall poor lung health, including cancer. 7. Difficulty Swallowing difficulty swallowing Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) is common when you have a sore throat. However, if you are experiencing pain while swallowing solid or liquid food that persists for a few weeks and even gets worse, it can be a sign of throat or stomach cancer as well as an early sign of lung cancer. 8. Raspy, Hoarse Voice hoarse voice Most of us suffer from hoarseness on occasion, especially when associated with laryngitis (an upper respiratory tract viral infection). 9. Unexplained Weight Loss unexplained weight loss If you are suddenly losing weight, especially when you are not trying to, it can be due to the presence of a cancer. About 6 out of 10 people with lung cancer experience sudden weight loss. It can also be due to other types of cancer, such as stomach, pancreatic or esophageal cancer. 10. Nail Clubbing nail clubbing Nail clubbing causes several changes in fingernails or toenails. These changes include softening of the nail beds, changes in the angle between the cuticle and the nail, and downward curving of the nail. thanks for watching subscribe my channel have nice day

1 Identify what each bar on the x-axis represents, e.g. the bar on the left represents non-smokers and the bar on the right represents smokers; 2 Identify what the y-axis represents, which in this case is the ‘death rates due to lung cancer’; 3 Put your ruler in line with the top of the bar (horizontally) and read across to the y-axis; 3 Work out the y-axis scale; 4 Identify the numbers for each bar, and write these numbers on the top of each bar; 5 Interpret the numbers and write your first sentence about the big picture, e.g. non-smokers have far lower death rates due to lung cancer compared to smokers; 6 Include data to justify your interpretation in your second sentence, e.g. the death rate due to lung cancer for non-smokers is 100 (per 100,000) in contrast to smokers, for which it is 1,100 (per 100,000).

Lung cancer may not be the most common type of cancer, but it's the most deadly. Thanks to low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans, however, lung cancer can now be found earlier, giving patients a better chance of survival. Recent results of a study that followed patients for five years found 20% fewer lung cancer deaths among heavy smokers screened with LDCT scans. Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) began offering this screening in early 2012 to patients who meet certain criteria (see table below). Lung cancer, also known as carcinoma of the lung or pulmonary carcinoma, is a malignant lung tumor characterized by uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. If left untreated, this growth can spread beyond the lung by process of metastasis into nearby tissue or other parts of the body. The vast majority (80–90%) of cases of lung cancer are due to long-term exposure to tobacco smoke. About 10–15% of cases occur in people who have never smoked. These cases are often caused by a combination of genetic factors and exposure to radon gas, asbestos, or other forms of air pollution, including second-hand smoke. Worldwide, lung cancer is the most common cancer among men in terms of both incidence and mortality, and among women has the third highest incidence, and is second after breast cancer in mortality. Learn the signs of lung cancer to catch the disease early and ensure a positive outcome. Below are some early signs of lung cancer according to healthline.com. No Warning Lung cancer may not produce any noticeable symptoms in the early stages. In approximately 40 percent of people diagnosed with lung cancer, the diagnosis is made after the disease has advanced. In one third of those diagnosed, the cancer has reached stage 3. Cough That Won’t Quit Be on alert for a new cough that lingers. While a cough associated with a cold or respiratory infection will go away in a week or two, a persistent cough that lingers can be a possible sign of lung cancer. Don’t be tempted to dismiss a stubborn cough, whether it is dry or mucus-producing, as “just a cough.” Change in a Cough Pay attention to any changes in a chronic cough, particularly if you are a smoker. If you are coughing more often, your cough has a deeper or hoarse sound, or you are coughing up blood or more mucus than usual, it’s time to make a doctor’s appointment. Breathing Changes Shortness of breath or becoming easily winded are also possible symptoms of lung cancer. This symptom can occur if lung cancer blocks or narrows an airway, or if fluid from a lung tumor builds up in the chest. Make a point of noticing when you feel winded or short of breath. If this symptom occurs after climbing the stairs to your house, bringing in groceries, or performing another task you could previously do without finding it hard to breathe, don’t ignore it. Pain in the Chest Area Lung cancer may produce pain in the chest, shoulder, or back area. This aching feeling may not be associated with coughing. Tell your doctor if you notice any type of chest pain, whether it is sharp, dull, constant, or comes and goes. You should also note whether it is confined to a specific area or is occurring throughout your chest. When lung cancer causes chest pain, the discomfort may result from enlarged lymph nodes or metastasis to the chest wall, pleura (lining around the lungs), or the ribs. Wheezing When airways become constricted, blocked, or inflamed, the lungs produce a wheezing or whistling sound when you breathe. Wheezing can be associated with multiple causes, some of which are benign and easily treatable. However, wheezing is also a lung cancer symptom, which is why it merits your doctor’s attention. If wheezing continues, don’t assume it’s asthma or allergies. Have your doctor confirm what’s causing it. Raspy, Hoarse Voice If you hear a significant change in your voice, or if someone else points out that your voice sounds deeper, hoarse, or raspier, get checked out by your doctor. Hoarseness can be caused by a simple cold, but this symptom becomes worrisome when it hangs on for more than two weeks. Hoarseness related to lung cancer can occur when the tumor affects the nerve that controls the larynx, or voice box. Drop in Weight An unexplained weight loss of 10 pounds or more may be associated with lung cancer or another type of cancer. When cancer is present, this weight drop may result from cancer cells using energy in the body. It could also result from shifts in the way the body uses food energy. Don’t write off a change in your weight if you haven’t been trying to shed pounds—it may be a clue to a change in your health. Bone Pain Lung cancer that has spread to the bones may produce pain in the back or in other areas of the body. This pain may worsen at night while resting on the back. Additionally, lung cancer is sometimes associated with shoulder, arm, or neck pain, although this is less common. Be attentive to your aches and pains, and discuss them with your doctor. Headache Headaches may be a sign that lung cancer has spread to the brain. However, not all headaches in people with lung cancer are associated with brain metastases. Sometimes, a lung tumor may create pressure on the superior vena cava, which is the large vein that moves blood from the upper body to the heart. This pressure can also trigger headaches. Talk with your doctor if your body shows these symptoms.

Watch more and discuss: http://norwalk.itsrelevant.com/content/19695/whittingham-changing-lung-cancer-treatment A new drug through a clinical trial at Norwalk Hospital is changing the way doctors are treating lung cancer. "We've now been able to identity a couple of specific genetic changes that can be targeted with drugs. Right now it is standard of care to treat some patients who have a mutation in the gene called EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) with a drug called Tarceva or another drug calledafatinib,"said Dr. Richard Frank, medical oncologist and Director of Cancer Researcha at Norwalk Hospital. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men and women.According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), each year more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. There are two major types of lung cancer, non-small cell and small cell. Diagnostic testing guides treatment by determining the type and stage of the cancer, as well as genetic mutations in the cancer cells. According to Dr. Richard Frank, the medicine targets a specific gene mutation in patients tumors. "This mutation is more common in people who did not smoke and developed lung cancer. There is a population especialy in young women, that is rising exponentially but we do not know why." With the new drugs, patients now have another treatment option other than traditional chemotherapy. "Now it's gene abnormality - pill. It is a targeted approach, said Dr. Frank. And Dr. Frank says the drugs are yielding promising results. "Not all the cells are killed but patients can enjoy remission of many months or many years in some cases. There has been a phase I trial already done and most of the patients responded so we know this pill is very active. We are now in the expansion trial meaning more people will recieve the drug, and probably as a result of this, the drug will recieve approval [from the FDA]. For more information about this clinical trial or about the cancer research program at Norwalk Hospital, please contact Jennifer M. Long, ANP-BC, nurse practitioner and clinical coordinator, Whittingham Cancer Center, 203-852-2996 or email Jennifer.firstname.lastname@example.org Produced By: Kwegyirba Croffie

Lung cancer is often deadly, because it has a notorious reputation of being diagnosed too late. Recently, researchers may have discovered a way to detect lung cancer through a nasal swab. Marc Lenburg, a co-author of the study that discovered the nasal swab, stated, “Nasal gene expression [production] contains information about the presence of cancer,” and that the swab, “might aid in lung cancer detection.” In the end, if this discovery is successful, it would save money and lives. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2017/02/27/Nasal-swab-shows-promise-in-confirming-lung-cancers/7131488228355/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

When patients diagnosed with cancer are admitted to the hospital, many times we see them at their lowest. From chemotherapy and radiation treatments to surgeries and diagnostic test. It can be an emotional roller coster for not only the patient but also all of their loved ones… including their medical staff… I remember about 2 months ago, I was feeling down. Normally I’m an extremely upbeat person. However, working on the oncology unit was taking it’s tole on me. I realized, that I was mistakingly focusing on some of the patients who didn’t make it. Unfortunately, many of the patients who recover fully do not make their ways back in the the hospital. I can’t blame, the hospital would not be high on my list also. Recently, I attended a fundraising event with my husband and I heard a beautiful dynamic speaker by the name of Camille. Don’t tell anyone, but I actually cried while she was talking… By the time she finished speaking, I knew I had to ask her to share her story on my channel. I waited for 2 hours to talk with her and after the crowds had died down, she graciously accepted my offer. Spending time with Camille was like taking a breath of fresh air. Imagine walking into someones home for an interview and a bubbly 60 year old greets you with tons of energy, gorgeous hair and a wholesome outlook and love for life. This is who Camlile is, just a loving bundle of joy - I left her house inspired and grateful. I hope you feel the same way after listening to her story. Camille was given one of the worst diagnosis… Had I been reading her chart, I unfortunately would have not spent too much time with it… I have never met anyone that survived Pancreatic Cancer, much less; Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with metastasis aka METS. The first doctor she went to told her that she that with stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with spots on in her lungs, liver and kidneys; there was nothing they could do and she was to go home and prepare to die. However, one thing that she strongly recommends is to get a second opinion, which is what she did. She went to University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer center. She found a doctor that believed in her and she trusted him. She will be the first to tell you that her story is not the norm and oftentimes told me how it hurts her to know that many others have had the same diagnosis and not the same outcome. However, her main focus is to share that no matter how bad things seem, you can always and MUST always have hope. Thankfully Camille is not alone these days. Thanks to advanced research and better treatment options. The bike ride event that Camille and I speak about in the video is a Fundraising event. Events like these help organizations raise money to continue research and be positioned to deliver specialized treatment options. Each persons cancer is different and events like these help us do a small part to help ensure much needed progress. I hope you decide to join us. Please read bike ride information below and email me with any questions: Caroline@EmpoweRN.com See you soon! xoxo ~Caroline Fundraising Bike Ride Information: Please join Camille and I February , 11th 2017 for the fundraising bike ride. If you click on the link below scroll down to a button that says “Join My Team.” After you click on the button, you will be taken to another page that gives you multiple options on different fundraising activities. Camille and I will be doing the 14 mile bike ride. Don’t worry, it is not a race and as long as you have a decent bike you probably do not have to prepare much for it. At least I didn’t lol. The minimum fundraising donation for the bike ride is $250 - however you can reserve your spot for $150 and raise the rest later if you would like. All proceeds will be donated to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer which is South Florida's leader in cancer diagnosis and provides state-of-the-art treatment as well as follow-up care. They also have an advanced research department, which is vital to discovering better treatment options, which in turn will help us save lives. Here is what I did: I purchased the $150 bike ride fee. Then, I purchased two of the $50 Counting Crows concert tickets. I went last year and it was a lot of fun, so I think it is worth the money anyways. Then, just to start my page I paid an additional $10, this is not necessary though. Since I did this last year I know how much fun it is going to be, so I hope you decide to join Camille and I! https://fundraisers.hakuapp.com/teams/team-hurricanes-hurricane-camille By the way, if you only want to donate… every single dollar helps! No donation is too small. Thank you for watching and thank you Camille for sharing your beautiful energy and message of hope to us all. Happy Holidays, ~Caroline
