In planning my academic instruction, I used the information that I have obtained to rewrite my lesson plan so that every student gets the best outcome from the lesson. Because many of the students are visual and kinesthetic learners, I incorporated many visuals such as pictures, videos and realias and made sure that students are given many chances to do physical activities rather than listening to a lecture. Students were able to actively participate throughout the lesson. I used something concrete such as manipulatives to show them how to create a graph and then I had them create a picture graph to show them something that is representational and then I asked them to use a graph to answer questions using abstract questions. Because students in this class are more verbal and have some difficulties in writing to express their ideas, I assessed their learning by asking them to verbally explain their graph to me. I used the information I learned about students' linguistic background in my selected subject matter to form appropriate groupings and pairs. I made sure that when I separate students into groups to work together, there will always be expert learners in each group with an ELL or struggling student so that the expert learners can help the ELL or struggling student. I also used this information to make modifications in my lesson plans and in my lesson presentation to ensure that all students will be able to participate and be able to use what they have learned during the whole group activity and small group activity to do their work independently. I made sure to engage the class by activating their prior knowledge at the beginning of the lesson so that students such as ELL students will be able to know what I am talking about when I say certain vocabulary words during the lesson.

In this video, I model the setup for the 5th Grade NGSS Performance Expectation 5-LS1-1: Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water. In this experiment, the class will set up an investigation to determine which materials plants need for growth, by taking one material away from each of 4 plants. Students will collect the height and descriptive data about the plants 3 times over 2 weeks, to come to the conclusion that plants must have sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide, and that while soil does help a plant to grow better, a plant can survive without soil. Worksheets to setup the experiment, collect data, analyze observations, and write an argument can be found at my Teachers Pay Teachers store here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/NGSS-What-Do-Plants-Need-to-Grow-5-LS1-1-2862001 Please comment with any questions!

Big Data projects have been about as successful as other IT projects – about 29% successful according to the 2015 Standish Group Chaos Report. Second, Data Scientists are generally assessed to be about 20% productive. The reason for both of these dismal statistics is simple—organizations are terrible about understanding how to use data as a strategic organizational resource. In fact, considering the data is our sole, non-depletable, non-degrading, durable strategic asset, it is really mind boggling how poorly it is managed. Having an actionable data strategy is the first, most critical step in exerting positive control over data and leveraging it in support of your organization’s business strategy. This talk will simply describe: What a data strategy is and its key component pieces How to align your data strategy with your organization’s strategic imperatives while recognizing the constraints of current state capabilities; and How to develop actionable roadmaps that will add value to the organization’s ability to leverage and monetize its data most effectively. Once understood, your organization will be better positioned to support its mission and take advantage of new and existing data sources while complying with relevant laws, regulations, and policies.

In this section we’re going to set up a master project for the charity event and we’re going to start with our original project, the one that’s called CharityEvent_All and the Sports Day Project that we’ve already created. Remember that those two projects are now both sharing a resource pool called CharityEvent_Resources. And really when it comes to splitting a large project or program into a number of constituent projects or subprojects the key area where there is usually the most effort is in restoring any links that existed in the original program or project. And this goes right back to a point that I made a couple of times already on the course. It’s a good idea to decide whether you’re going to split a program or project into a number of separate files as early on in the process as you can or you do finish up with quite a bit of work to do. Now what I’m going to do here is to demonstrate how to deal with that one project and then what I’m going to do is to set you Exercise 01 on the course where you’re going to split off the other projects that make up all of the charity event. Now the first thing I’m going to do is to open CharityEvent_All. You need to look carefully at what happens when I do this. Now it says, This file shares resources from a resource pool. What do you want to do? You can open the resource pool to see the assignments across all sharer files or do not open other files. Now if I open this project on its own although I’ll be able to see the list of resources that it uses I won’t be looking at the resource pool and all of the sharer projects. So I won’t get an accurate picture of resource usage. So what I’m going to do here is to select the first option. Now it’s very interesting, if you go to the View tab here on look at Switch Windows because what you’ll see is that we have the Charity Event All project open normally, we have the resource pool open read only, we don’t have the Sports Day project open. Now let me just move this across here. Now although I don’t have the Sports Day project open the resource pool is aware of the resource assignments in that project and I can see them here on the Resource Sheet in Resource Usage View. So that’s a very important point. I can see how the resources are being used even though I don’t have all of the projects open. I do however need to have the resource pool open. So having pointed that out let me now go back to the Gantt Chart for the All project. Note that I have the Planning summary task expanded here. The Gala Dinner and Fashion Show and Buffet Lunch summary tasks are both collapsed, and the Sports Day and Barbeque summary task is expanded as well. Now as you can see from this there are links, dependencies, between the Sports Day and Barbeque summary task tasks and the Planning summary task tasks. And what I need to do is to replace the Sports Day summary task with my separate project and then reestablish these links. Now I need to explain a couple of things as we go through this, but the first thing I need to do is to insert the Sports Day project into the All project. Sorry, we couldn't fit the entire video transcription here since YouTube only allows 5000 characters.

In this article, we will be taking up monthly capacity planning for a team. We will be using the Resource Capacity Planner Excel Template in this exercise. (Link: https://indzara.com/product/resource-capacity-planner-excel-template/) SCENARIO: We are responsible for planning our team’s capacity every month. We need to have a realistic view of how much work can be done by our team next month, taking into account the availability of each of our team members during the month. This will allow us to commit to our leadership on deliverables’ scope and if needed ask for more resource or to reduce the deliverables. Resource Capacity Planner Excel template is helpful in understanding the available resource capacity, comparing with demand and identifying surplus/deficit capacity by skill groups. The template takes the resource availability, holidays, weekends, overtime and vacation data to calculate capacity. Then, based on your input demand data, it can calculate the surplus/deficit capacity. In addition, you can generate an employee availability report. It can be used in different environments. For example, a manager leading a team can use this to plan capacity of his team every month. A project manager who is working on a multi-month long project can plan the resource capacity for the entire duration. This can also be used outside corporate environments wherever you want to compare demand vs capacity. How can teachers collaboratively plan lessons to deliver better classes while leaving resources for others to build upon? Collaborative Lesson Planning, or CLP, is a method for teachers to collaboratively plan lessons. This can be accomplished within the confines of one school and online. The internet has more potential and is currently underutilized. The cycle is 1) teacher puts their lesson plan online; 2) teacher delivers lesson; 3) teacher reviews lesson (via AAR www.army.mil/features/FM7/FM%207-0.pdf p. 98) and publishes the review online; 4) teacher gets feedback, then incorporates into a revised version of the plan and goes back to step 1. Over time the quality of their own lessons will likely improve and an Open Educational Resource (OER) online that other instructors can use and improve will be built. Eventually that OER should have many plans for the same textbook chapter/topic modifiable for classes with differing numbers of students or abilities. My research in CLP started when I was a new English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher in Japan. I searched online for lesson plans and other resources I could use for my classes but was frequently frustrated by what I found, or, more importantly, did not find. I then made my own lesson (e.g. months of the year), which EFL teachers have taught before. I was re-inventing the wheel. I feel this was a waste of my time. As Eric S. Raymond writes in "How to Become a Hacker", "No problem should ever have to be solved twice." My time would have been better spent tweaking a proven effective lesson plan for my own students. Then I could have fed my work back into the cycle helping EFL teachers around the globe. I do not want other new teachers to repeat my experience. To that end I published virtually all of my lessons from China on Wikiversity (is.gd/kV2gMP) and am collaborating with other users to improve them. I edited a book edition of them published in early 2011 by PediaPress (is.gd/CrQyYp). Additionally I have co-organized two courses on CLP at The Peer 2 Peer University with Dr. Marjorie King and am currently co-organizing a study group there. That is the center for the online discussion about the subject. At this presentation I hope to share findings about effective ways to implement CLP. I will illuminate best practices and share stories from my work in the field. Then I will outline a simple "how to" for others implementing CLP. Finally I will share the future possibilities and next year's goals for CLP. Speakers: Charles Danoff

This video considers different organisational strategies for teaching science in the primary classroom. These include managing whole class introductions and practical investigations as well as different types of group work. Advantages and disadvantages of each organisation are presented. Viewers are encouraged to think about how to choose the most appropriate strategy. The video particularly focuses on the need for organisation before a lesson and how the teacher might optimise the learning and assessment of the children during the activities. The video is illustrated with a variety of classroom examples. Types of Organisation 1: Whole Class - Introduction, practical activity, sharing science books, demonstration, drawing the lesson together 2: Group Work - Groups doing different practical activities, circus of different activities, one group only doing science Think about - Making the lesson relevant and stimulating. What needs to be done before the lesson. What equipment is available. How can it be organised. The childrens experience of group work. Time available. What will you do in the lesson The organisation you will choose will depend on - What you want the children to learn. What experience the class already have of group work. The time, equipment and materials available Your planning should include - What you need to collect and set out. Introducing the work. What the children will do. Monitoring and assessing their learning. Helping children of different abilities. Concluding the lesson The video was written and produced by Tina Jarvis, Frankie McKeon and Jon Shears from SCIcentre and University of Leicester ITS Multimedia Services. It was made with the kind cooperation of St Marys CE Primary School, Bitteswell, Leicester. Special thanks go to Linda Cork and Penny Vernon.

For full lesson plans, including worksheets and interactive presentation slides, visit: http://bit.ly/ncssmmantidmath This brief animation explains how biologists study mantids, their eating habits and digestion. These animations are part of a larger lesson in which students use graphing calculators to create a scatter plot of data gathered by biologists observing mantids. Students determine an appropriate linear model for the Mantid data, use their graphing calculator to calculate residuals for the Mantid data, and interpret the goodness of fit of their model based on the residuals. Students will also interpret the slope and intercepts of the model in the context of the problem and use their model to make predictions and interpret their meaning. Planning any project requires a great deal of knowledge and coordination. As far back as the 1920s, the Gantt chart was in use to show the scheduled and actual progress of projects. In the mid-1950s, two new techniques (PERT and CPM) emerged to help in project planning. These techniques are also valuable to research plans, particularly studies with complex activities. Also around this time, the marketing mix (as the four Ps) was introduced. The marketing mix is a useful checklist and helps in marketing planning, and is therefore an important concept for the market researcher. http://www.oxfordtextbooks.co.uk/orc/bradley2e

India's $90 billion Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor is one of the most ambitious, expensive endeavors in human history. But the project that will change the lives of the most people is the construction of hundreds of thousands of kilometers of paved roads. The country’s $90 billion Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor is one of the most ambitious, expensive endeavors in human history. Completing 1,500 kilometers of new railway and more than 20 brand new cities will set the stage for India to become a manufacturing superpower in the next two decades. It’s so important I made a video all about it a couple years ago, it’s linked below. Now, the corridor may be vital to India’s future economy, but it’s not the project that will deliver the largest day-to-day improvement in quality of life. Neither will a new mega-airport under construction in Mumbai, or World One—the largest residential tower in the world, or even a 500 km high speed rail line planned for India’s west coast. No, the project Indians need most is more basic than all that: it’s hundreds of thousands of kilometers of paved roads. Like the rest of the world, the Indian people have fallen in love with driving. But there currently aren’t enough reliable highways to hold all the cars in a country of 1.3 billion people and growing. The good news is that the Indian government has learned one of the key economic lessons of modern history: that the not-so-secret ingredient of America’s dominance over the last half century is our vast network of well-maintained streets and highways. Roads allow us to move ourselves — and all of our goods — fluidly from city to city, from fields to towns to air and sea ports, and beyond. China learned this lesson a while ago. They’ve spent tens of billions of dollars on roadways over the past two decades as their economy boomed. Now that its transportation infrastructure is maturing, the Chinese are positioned for rapid development. India wants to follow the same blueprint and is in the midst of a sustained, years-long, multi-tens of billions of dollars megaproject to do just that. India has about the same population as China, but double the density. Get this, of the five most-densely populated cities in the world with more than four million residents, four of them are in India, including the planet’s most crowded megacity, Mumbai. So with much less land to work with, India’s challenge will be expanding, modernizing, and widening its existing network of roads, which, on the plus side, is already quite extensive. On the downside, 40% of it is dirt. Without good roads, the country is less unified because its people and goods can’t move around freely enough, especially to and from rural areas. One of the new roads in the megaproject that’s already completed is a $2B expressway that slashed the travel time between Delhi to Agra by up to four hours. But barbed wire fencing all along the route keeps it clear of the people and slow-moving vehicles that crowd the rest of India’s roads, and high tolls mean it's used only for the rich. Challenges like this will need to be addressed and overcome by the government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi who’s a big fan of megaprojects, and has maintained his commitment to the ambitious goal of completing 18,500 kilometers of controlled-access highway. One of the main obstacles to achieving this vision is that the megaproject suffers from chronic underfunding and the disappointment of only reaching about half its construction goals, year-after-year. Compare this to the way the Chinese operate. As an authoritarian country, a single political party controls the entire government, allowing it to push projects through and spend money as it pleases, sometimes in a brutally efficient way. But while China, India’s continental rival, may have leapt ahead in its rate of completion of a mega-network of highways, it has yet to face the inevitable reckoning of a messy transition to democracy. With a people who are much freer, on this front, the Indians are miles ahead of the Chinese. Now, they just need to build themselves enough open road so their economy can hit top speed.

This presentation tells the story of CSBE (www.csbe.org), an independent non-profit think / do tank. It focuses on exploring how fields connected to the built environment, including architecture, urbanism, landscape architecture, heritage conservation, and construction technologies, can enhance the public good. In doing so, CSBE has been involved in collecting, documenting, and processing data; carrying out research projects; disseminating accumulated knowledge and information through print and online publications, lectures, workshops, as well as courses; and implementing pilot projects. The presentation will focus on how CSBE has worked on realizing its goals since its inception in Jordan about two decades ago. These goals could not be realized merely through striving for technical proficiency. There also has been a need to develop appropriate internal financial and administrative systems, as well as navigating complex and continuously-changing legal environments. In addition, the importance of grasping available opportunities for collaboration and the development of support networks with relevant organizations and individuals cannot be underestimated. Mohammad al-Asad is an architect and architectural historian. He is the Founding Director of the Center for the Study of the Built Environment in Amman (CSBE; www.csbe.org), an independent private, non-profit think / do tank that was established in 1999. He studied architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and history of architecture at Harvard University before taking on post-doctoral research positions at Harvard and at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He taught at Princeton University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Jordan, the German Jordanian University, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was the Alan K. and Leonarda Laing Distinguished Visiting Professor. He was also an adjunct professor at Carleton University in Ottawa. In addition, he has been involved in teaching Open Massive Online Courses (MOOC) in both Arabic and English on architecture and urbanism for the Edraak Platform of the Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development, and for the Aga Khan Trust for Culture Education Program. He has published extensively in both Arabic and English on architecture and urbanism. He is the author of Contemporary Architecture and Urbanism in the Middle East (2012). He also co-edited (with Rahul Mehrotra) Shaping Cities: Emerging Models of Planning Practice (2016), and edited Workplaces: The Transformation of Places of Production: Industrial Buildings in the Islamic World (2010). In addition, he is a contributor to the forthcoming 21st edition of Sir Banister Fletcher’s A History of Architecture. Al-Asad has appeared in documentary films including Islamic Art: Mirror of the Invisible World (2012), and also led the production of films including Arab Women in Architecture (2014). He is a member of the board of directors of the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts (part of the Royal Society for Fine Arts). He also had served as the Coordinator of the International Academic and Curatorial Committee for the Discover Islamic Art project of the Museum With No Frontiers, and was a member of the Amman Commission, which served as an advisory body for the Mayor of Amman. Al-Asad was a project reviewer for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture between 1989 and 2007, and has been a member of the Award's Steering Committee for its 2010, 2013, 2016, and 2019 cycles. This event is supported by the Aga Khan Program at the GSD.
