A review of 1.25 million medical records of 30 year olds and older from a primary care practice for 5 years in England and looked at the different effects of systolic and diastolic blood pressure when it came to intracerebral bleeds, angina, abdominal aortic aneurysm, and renal disease. They published their results in the May issue of the journal The Lancet. There are no real symptoms to warn you. And surprisingly, ⅓ of adults over the age of 20 have high blood pressure. So the problem starts early. And the older we get, the worse the numbers become. For example, over 60% of the population over the age of 65 has high blood pressure. For women, it’s even worse because of menopause.2,3 Sadly, 70% of the population doesn’t even know they have high blood pressure, which greatly increases your risk of death by 43%, in addition to other health ailments.2,3 Now, before I give you the ideal blood pressure numbers, let’s first talk about what the numbers even mean. The top number, known as Systolic, refers to the amount of pressure in your arteries during the contraction of your heart muscle. The bottom number, called Diastolic, refers to your blood pressure when your heart muscle is between beats. Both numbers are important in determining the state of your heart health. Numbers greater than the ideal range, indicate that your heart is working too hard to pump blood to the rest of your body. This obviously puts more stress on your heart, as well as your veins, blood vessels and arteries. In fact, this puts more pressure on your brain as well! So, what’s the ideal range?... Here’s a quick chart on blood pressure levels. As you can see, anything in the red that’s over 140/90 is considered “high” blood pressure. The yellow zone is better, but still a problem. Ideal range is in the green, which is LESS than 120/80. I prefer around 110/70 or 115/75. Now, the reason I like it lower is because studies1 have found that lower than 120 mmHG Systolic (top number) caused 43% lower risk of cardiovascular death 38% lower “heart failure” 27% in less deaths 25% lower deaths from “first” heart attacks 17% lower heart attacks 11% lower strokes So lower is better, as long as you feel fine… and preferably done naturally - through specific diet, exercise and supplements. So if you want to live longer, lowering your blood pressure levels to 120/80 or lower, is a huge benefit and a necessity for total health. I would skip the drugs and try to do it naturally with diet, exercise and supplements. And this is really important if you’re over the age of 40 because lots of clinical evidence that aging is a major contributing factor to hypertension because of the change in your hormones. Blood Pressure Readings Explained What do the numbers mean? Everyone would like to have healthy blood pressure. But what exactly does that mean? When your doctor takes your blood pressure, it’s expressed as a measurement with two numbers, with one number on top (systolic) and one on the bottom (diastolic), like a fraction. For example, 120/80 mm Hg. The top number refers to the amount of pressure in your arteries during the contraction of your heart muscle. This is called systolic pressure. The bottom number refers to your blood pressure when your heart muscle is between beats. This is called diastolic pressure. Both numbers are important in determining the state of your heart health. Numbers greater than the ideal range indicate that your heart is working too hard to pump blood to the rest of your body. What’s a normal reading? For a normal reading, your blood pressure needs to show a top number (systolic pressure) that’s between 90 and less than 120 and a bottom number (diastolic pressure) that’s between 60 and less than 80. The American Heart Association (AHA) considers blood pressure to be within the normal range when both your systolic and diastolic numbers are in these ranges. Blood pressure readings are expressed in millimeters of mercury. This unit is abbreviated as mm Hg. A normal reading would be any blood pressure below 120/80 mm Hg and above 90/60 mm Hg in an adult. If you’re in the normal range, no medical intervention is needed. However, you should maintain a healthy lifestyle and healthy weight to help prevent hypertension from developing. Regular exercise and healthy eating can also help. You may need to be even more mindful of your lifestyle if hypertension runs in your family. Elevated blood pressure Numbers higher than 120/80 mm Hg are a red flag that you need to take on heart-healthy habits. When your systolic pressure is between 120 and 129 mm Hg and your diastolic pressure is less than 80 mm Hg, it means you have elevated blood pressure. Although these numbers aren’t technically considered high blood pressure, you’ve moved out of the normal range. Elevated blood pressure has a good chance of turning into actual high blood pressure, which puts you at an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. No medications are necessary for elevated blood pressure. But this is when you should adopt healthier lifestyle choices. A balanced diet and regular exercise can help lower your blood pressure to a healthy range and help prevent elevated blood pressure from developing into full-fledged hypertension. Hypertension: Stage 1 You’ll generally be diagnosed with high blood pressure if your systolic blood pressure reaches between 130 and 139 mm Hg, or if your diastolic blood pressure reaches between 80 and 89 mm Hg. This is considered stage 1 hypertension. However, the AHA notes that if you get only one reading this high, you may not truly have high blood pressure. What determines the diagnosis of hypertension at any stage is the average of your numbers over a period of time. Your doctor can help you measure and track your blood pressure to confirm whether it’s too high. You may need to start taking medications if your blood pressure doesn’t improve after one month of following a healthy lifestyle, especially if you’re already at high risk for heart disease. Those at lower risk may be followed up in three to six months after adopting more healthy habits. If you’re 65 years or older and otherwise healthy, your doctor will likely recommend treatment and lifestyle changes once your systolic blood pressure is greater than 130 mm Hg. The treatment for adults 65 and older who have significant health problems should be made on a case-by-case basis. Treating high blood pressure in older adults appears to decrease memory problems and dementia. Hypertension: Stage 2 Stage 2 high blood pressure indicates an even more serious condition. If your blood pressure reading shows a top number of 140 or more, or a bottom number of 90 or more, it’s considered stage 2 hypertension. At this stage, your doctor will recommend one or more medications for keeping your blood pressure under control. But you shouldn’t rely solely on medications to treat hypertension. Lifestyle habits are just as important in stage 2 as they are in the other stages. Some medications that can complement a healthy lifestyle include: ACE inhibitors to block substances that tighten blood vessels alpha-blockers used for relaxing arteries beta-blockers to decrease heart rate and block substances that tighten blood vessels calcium channel blockers to relax blood vessels and decrease the work of the heart diuretics to decrease the amount of fluid in your body, including your blood vessels.

So yes, with the new definitions you have elevated blood pressure when your systolic blood pressure, that top number, is between 120 and 129. So now, what is the definition of hypertension? It's when the systolic blood pressure is 130 or greater, and when the diastolic blood pressure is 90 or greater. What are the consequences of poorly controlled blood pressure? Well, heart disease, heart failure, stroke. And again, poorly controlled hypertension can lead to kidney failure. Hypertension is the second most common cause of kidney failure in the United States. What are the symptoms of hypertension? Well sure, you can get headaches. Some people will even get shortness of breath. There are different symptoms that you can get with severe high blood pressure. But the most common symptom of hypertension is nothing. So you could be walking around here with dangerously elevated blood pressures with no symptoms whatsoever, and that's why they call hypertension the silent killer. In fact, the population that ate the most salt, about 14 grams a day, had a lower median blood pressure than the population that ate the least, about 7.2 grams a day... For every study that suggests that salt is unhealthy, multiple ones reveal that it does not." So what about the studies that show lowering salt is good for blood pressure? A 2004 analysis of 11 salt-reduction trials found that over the long-term, low-salt diets decreased systolic blood pressure by 1.1 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and diastolic blood pressure by 0.6 mmHg. That equates to reducing your blood pressure from 120/80 to 119/79.6 A 2006 study in the American Journal of Medicine study compared the reported daily sodium intakes of 78 million Americans to their risk of dying from heart disease over the course of 14 years. The study concluded that lower sodium diets led to HIGHER death rates among those with cardiovascular disease!7 I can go on and on, but I hope you see where this is leading. Salt is good for you. Not only is salt relatively benign, it's actually a nutritional goldmine,... Regular table salt will damage your health, while natural salts are profoundly healing. Here's a quick break-down of their basic ingredients: Natural salt: 84 percent sodium chloride, 16 percent naturally-occurring trace minerals, including silicon, phosphorous, vanadium, magnesium, potassium, etc. Processed (table) salt: 97.5 percent sodium chloride, 2.5 percent man-made chemicals, such as moisture absorbents and flow agents. These are dangerous chemicals. Processing table salt also radically alters and damages the structure of the salt. This weeks video is about high blood pressure and how you can prevent getting it with simple yet effective lifestyle changes. Healthcare professionals refer to high blood pressure as the silent killer and for a good reason! High blood pressure increases risks of many diseases and shortens your life significantly. WHAT IS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and is given as two figures: Systolic pressure – The pressure when your heart pushes blood out. Diastolic pressure – The pressure when your heart rests between beats. As a general guide: High blood pressure is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher (or an average of 135/85mmHg at home) Ideal blood pressure is considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg Low blood pressure is considered to be 90/60mmHg or lower. A blood pressure reading between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you're at risk of developing high blood pressure if you don't take steps to keep your blood pressure under control. HOW TO PREVENT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: High blood pressure can often be prevented or reduced by eating healthily, maintaining a healthy weight, taking regular exercise, drinking alcohol in moderation and not smoking. SALT & DIET: Cut down on the amount of salt in your food and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. The NHS Eatwell Guide highlights the different types of food that make up our diet, and shows the proportions we should eat them in to have a well-balanced and healthy diet. If you're a big fan of coffee, tea or other caffeine-rich drinks, such as cola and some energy drinks, consider cutting down. STOP SMOKING: Smoking doesn't directly cause high blood pressure, but it puts you at much higher risk of a heart attack and stroke. If you smoke and have high blood pressure, your arteries will narrow much more quickly, and your risk of heart or lung disease in the future is dramatically increased. Blood pressure measures the pressure in the arteries, the vessels that carry blood away from the heart. The ability of arteries to respond to blood flow determines blood pressure. What is low blood pressure? Low blood pressure is a difficult clinical finding to address for a health professional. While high blood pressure is known as the "silent killer", since it is associated with few acute symptoms, hypotension (hypo = low + tension = pressure) may be normal for a patient if it does not have symptoms but may be great importance if it is associated with abnormal body function. Sometimes, the low is good, a goal that must be achieved to keep blood pressure under control. Sometimes, the low is bad because there is not enough pressure to provide blood flow to the organs of the body. Blood pressure ratio The blood pressure readings have two parts and are expressed as a ratio: "Normal" blood pressure for example, it is 120/80 (120 over 80) and measures the pressure inside the arteries of the body. Systolic pressure, the upper number, measures the pressure inside the arteries when the heart contracts (systole) to pump blood to the body.
