Schizophrenia is the most severe illness among the mental illnesses; likewise, the country is estimated to have 400,000 people living with the condition, a number that exceeds the 400 psychiatric nurses and 100 psychiatric doctors. Spirits, Stigma and Crazy: Exploring Mental Health and Illness in Africa

02:43:11
Mental illness is considered a silent epidemic around the world, including throughout Africa. In order to provide culturally responsive mental health care in Africa, we must focus on understanding the cultural context of mental illness, traditional explanatory and treatment models, and ways to strengthen collaboration with traditional and community healers. Drawing on my field research in West, East and Southern Africa, I will examine the connection between culture and wellbeing, the role of traditional cultural/spiritual beliefs and practices, and barriers to adequate mental health treatment. This will be streaming live, so questions will be answered live!

Mental Health Conversations in the Media | Kelsey Wettig | TEDxPSU

11:10
Mental health is a subject that almost exclusively spoken about in a negative context despite its prevalence in society. In an effort to shed light on common misconceptions, Kelsey Wettig highlights different areas of the media where stigma is cultivated. As someone who copes with an anxiety disorder, Kelsey actively looks for ways to inspire others that may be struggling with a mental illness by speaking candidly about her own experiences. She has even taken her platform to the stage of Miss Pennsylvania, a preliminary competition to the Miss America pageant, in order to reach a larger audience. Her latest endeavor is launching http://stigmastopshere.org, a collaborative mental health blog encouraging open communication and the starting of positive conversations geared toward eliminating stigma. Kelsey hopes to demonstrate that courage is contagious, and that a mental illness does not define who you are. Kelsey graduated this past December from Penn State with a degree in Advertising and Public Relations. During her sophomore year, she joined PSU’s mental health awareness club Active Minds and began speaking about her experience in living with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Once she realized the impact her story could have in helping others, she decided to take her platform to the Miss Pennsylvania stage in order to reach a larger audience. Her latest endeavor is Stigma Stops Here, a collaborative blog website that encourages open communication on mental health. How should we tackle Syria's mental health crisis? - The Stream

24:54
Syria's civil war has created a staggering number of refugees - more than five million. Syrians that were able to start a new life in other countries are just beginning a difficult journey. But traumatic events, memories of atrocities, and separation from family and friends has led to an unprecedented amount of people at risk of mental trauma and myriad mental health issues. Turkey has the biggest population of Syrian refugees, with over 3 million living there. The government reports that 55 percent of those people need psychological services. Lebanon hosts about 1 million refugees. And in Germany, which has taken the most refugees in Europe, 268,866 Syrians are adjusting to a new way of life. There, a recent study estimated that half of them had mental health issues and that 50 percent had been victims of violence. Refugees who suffer with mental health issues share many of the same afflictions. A large number suffer psychological damage because of things that happened to them during the war, and many others because of life-threatening journeys to escape. Some of the most common problems are emotional disorders like post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and various anxiety disorders. But mental health professionals say that may be just the tip of the iceberg. The logistics required to evaluate and treat such a huge number of refugees are daunting. Mental health can take a backseat while other seemingly more pressing issues like housing, learning a new language, and day-to-day survival are the focus. Seeking treatment, especially among men, is often stigmatised in Syrian culture. So, are refugees receiving adequate services for their mental health needs? In that regard communities have been challenged to change their perceptions towards the senior citizens who often denied mental health care due to 'ageism'. Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the government will explore ways and means of increasing the number of mental health workers so as to improve mental health care service delivery.

The Stigma Surrounding Mental Health and Mental Illness

04:19
http://www.TransformingStigma.Com/effects-of-stigma-on-mental-illness.html In this video, Mike Veny, is speaking about the stigma surrounding mental health and mental illness to raise awareness for professionals at a conference. Mike Veny is a mental health speaker and the founder of http://www.TransformingStigma.Com. Examples of stigma include thinking that mental illness is correlated with violence. Statistics show that people with mental illness are more likely to have a violent crime committed against them than committing a violent crime. In addition, people who live with mental illness experience employment discrimination. Search online to learn more about the survey results of mental health provider-based stigma and understanding the experience of clients and families. We need to have more discussion regarding this issue. It's time to change our cultural paradigm and campaign to transform stigma. Australia and Canada are setting the example for transforming stigma. In Canada, the company Bell is doing a incredible job of increasing awareness through it's "Let's Talk" campaign. Bell is setting a good example for how business can help transform stigma. Mental health stigma is in the military (and is experienced by veterans), in the media, at work, in healthcare and just about everywhere in America. Believe it or not, it exists in social work, too. In fact, it affects everyone including mental professionals. In the United States of America, stigma is a huge problem in the black community. African Americans are experiencing difficulties in having conversations about mental health with each other. Despite these challenges, there is hope. NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is working hard to address the stigma surrounding minority mental health as a whole. This issue spans across cutures, too - mental health stigma is in the Muslim community, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and China. Check out this video a unique definition and some good quotes about stigma. Also, be sure to check out the Transforming Stigma blog. http://www.TransformingStigma.Com/blog
