I'm in a Crisis! Can I help others? | mental health support with therapist Kati Morton

Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy Can I help someone in crisis when I myself am struggling? I get questions about this all the time. Some want to know how to help someone with a mental health struggle when they themselves are struggling, others want to know how to support a sibling going through the same thing. The truth is that we cannot help someone else when we are struggling too. I know that's hard to hear, but it's the truth. If we are not doing well we don't have any extra energy to give out to someone else. What we can do is check in, let them know we are thinking of them, and that we will reach back out when we are doing better. Just like the safety instructions on a plane, we have to put on our own mask before helping someone else with theirs. Try to remember this message when you find yourself being pulled in a ton of different directions are you are having a hard time. It's okay to take care of yourself first. Then, and only then, can we help someone else. xox ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ****PLEASE READ**** If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call a local emergency telephone number or go immediately to the nearest emergency room. ------------------------------------------ BIG THANK YOU to my Patreon Patrons! Suicide & A Safety Plan - Mental Heath Videos with Kati Morton

09:54
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy In this week's video I talk about suicide and creating a safety plan. The great thing about a safety plan is that we can create them with our therapist (if we are seeing one) or on our own. They need to be unique to us and realistic. Think about these things when putting these together: Is your area safe? Are you keeping something with the thought that you could hurt yourself with it later?? Also, what are your warning signs? How do you know when your getting more down or more suicidal? Because the sooner we can realize we are going down this path, the sooner we can work on it!! Create a call list of people who are there and who are supportive, like your parents, friends, significant others, etc. Lastly, contact a professional!! Your therapist or hospital or a suicide hotline. I know we get nervous to reach out, but you are worth the fight and people are there to help, so reach to them!! And let's keep working towards a Healthy Mind and a Healthy Body!! xox Here is a link to a Safety Plan: www.wafca.org/DHS35/Suicide_Safety_Plan_2012.01.doc‎ Suicide & a Safety Plan - Mental Heath Videos with Kati Morton Kati Morton, MFTI Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/katimorton Subscribe to my channel: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=katimorton Playlist Complete "Healthy Mind, Healthy Body!": https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_loxoCVsWqzvKjM9HCbL1sWxsWJSRLNK Types of Eating Disorders: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_loxoCVsWqz_CKEMjHx8o-umO1TzzaDr Eating Disorders Explained: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAB41960D35357E06 Dietitian series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_loxoCVsWqx8b27IXCAQNcpfMtcwmiXD Self-Harm: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_loxoCVsWqxUuzhjHu7Ra_UyKd4tEde2 Live Broadcasts: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_loxoCVsWqxDKOXuVu3Uho-409fNOEAl Kind words from you: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_loxoCVsWqxJnRXSOBkq1bKm6S8vUE_M Help Techniques: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL14F50E070238DF4E My other sites: My Website: https://www.katimorton.com Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/katimorton Tumblr: https://www.katimorton.tumblr.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/katimorton1 Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/katimorton1 Help us caption & translate this video! http://amara.org/v/CGcO/ SUICIDE HOTLINES Albania: 127 Argentina: (54-11) 4758-2554 Australia: 13 11 14 Austria: 142 Barbados: (246) 4299999 Belgium: 106 Botswana: 3911270 Brazil: +55 51 211 2888 Canada - Greater Vancouver: 604-872-3311 Canada - Toll free-Howe Sound/Sunshine Coast: 18666613311 Canada - TTY: 1-866-872-0113 Canada - BC-wide: 1-800-SUICIDE (784-2433) China: 0800-810-1117 China (Mobile/IP/extension users): 010-8295-1332 Croatia: (01) 4833-888 Cyprus: +357 77 77 72 67 Denmark: +45 70 201 201 Estonia (1): 126 Estonia (2): 127 Estonia (3): 646 6666 Fiji (1): 679 670565 Fiji (2): 679 674364 Finland: 01019-0071 France: (+33) (0)9 51 11 61 30 Germany (1): 0800 1110 111 Germany (2): 0800 1110 222 Germany (youth): 0800 1110 333 Ghana: 233 244 846 701 Greece: (0) 30 210 34 17 164 Hungary: (46) 323 888 India: 2549 7777 Ireland (1): +44 (0) 8457 90 90 90 Ireland (2): +44 (0) 8457 90 91 92 Ireland (3): 1850 60 90 90 Ireland (4): 1850 60 90 91 Israel: 1201 Italy: 199 284 284 Japan (1): 03 5774 0992 Japan (2): 03 3498 0231 Kenya: +254 20 3000378/2051323 Liberia: 06534308 Lithuania: 8-800 2 8888 Malaysia (1): (063) 92850039 Malaysia (2): (063) 92850279 Malaysia (3): (063) 92850049 Malta: 179 Mauritius: (230) 800 93 93 Namibia: (09264) 61-232-221 Netherlands: 0900-0767 New Zealand (1): (09) 522 2999 New Zealand (2): 0800 111 777 Norway: +47 815 33 300 Papua New Guinea: 675 326 0011 Philippines: 02 -896 - 9191 Poland (1): +48 527 00 00 Poland (2): +48 89 92 88 Portugal: (808) 200 204 Samoa: 32000 Serbia: 32000 Singapore: 1800- 221 4444 South Africa: 0861 322 322 Sweden (1): 020 22 00 60 Sweden (2): 020 22 00 70 Switzerland: 143 Thailand: (02) 713-6793 Ukraine: 058 United Kingdom (1): 08457 909090 United Kingdom (2): +44 1603 611311 United Kingdom (3): +44 (0) 8457 90 91 92 United Kingdom (4): 1850 60 90 90 United Kingdom (5): 1850 60 90 91 United States of America: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) Zimbabwe (1): (263) 09 65000 Zimbabwe (2): 0800 9102 -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Getting the help you need in the NHS system - Mental Health

15:48
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy How can we get the help we need when we are within England's NHS system? Mags shares her story of how she started with her GP and got referred to a depression and anxiety team. On the way to that appointment, she attempted suicide and ended up with the Crisis Team. From there she was offered a support worker and a CPN. They helped get her on the right lists and referred for psychotherapy. It took Mags about 2 years to get referred to see a therapist within the Mental Health System and even longer to get financial assistance, housing, and other important resources. Her message is powerful and she urges you that if you need help, get it. She also talks about how many of the programs make it sound like they are only for those with physical disabilities, but they are NOT! They are the same ones that those with mental health issues can receive, so make sure you ask the right questions and keep pushing! Even if you are denied at first most of those denials are reversed when we appeal. So don't give up! You deserve to get help and there is help available! Thank you Mags for sharing all that you have been through and how you got the help that you need. I know you feel it could definitely be improved, but I am so proud of you for pushing and pushing to get the services that you need. xoxo ABOUT THE NHS NHS England leads the National Health Service (NHS) in England. They set the priorities and direction of the NHS and encourage and inform the national debate to improve health and care. They commission the contracts for GPs, pharmacists, and dentists and support local health services that are led by groups of GPs called Clinical Commissioning Groups. https://www.england.nhs.uk/mental-health/ BIG THANK YOU to my Patreon Patrons! Aging & Depression? What should we know and look for?

06:44
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy Today I talk about depression in older adults. I know that many of you probably think that depression is the same no matter what age, and some of that does ring true. However, we find that older adults tend to have more somatic symptoms of depression (like feeling aches and pains as well as tired and feeling heavy or weighted down). Also, they do not report feeling sad when depressed, and instead more irritable and lonely. Depression doesn't discriminate! It affects people of all ages, races, and walks of life. The sooner we seek help for it the better! Seeking help doesn't make us weird or weak, in fact, it actually means the opposite. To seek help means we are strong and willing to fight for ourselves and get the life we want! So if you are struggling, please see your doctor and then make an appointment to see a therapist in your area. The sooner we can understand our own depression, the sooner we can overcome it! If you or someone you care about is in crisis, please seek help immediately. What is a Psych Ward? Mental Health Help with Kati Morton

05:25
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy Today I talk about what a psychiatric ward looks like. I spent a few years working at one and wanted to share with you what it is like. Remember that even though they can be a bit scary and overwhelming, the important thing is that they keep us safe. Psychiatric hospitals, are also known as mental hospitals and psychiatric wards ("psych" wards) when they are a sub-unit of a regular hospital, are hospitals or wards specializing in the treatment of serious mental disorders, such as clinical depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Psychiatric hospitals vary widely in their size and grading. Some hospitals may specialize only in short-term or outpatient therapy for low-risk patients. Others may specialize in the temporary or permanent care of residents who, as a result of a psychological disorder, require routine assistance, treatment, or a specialized and controlled environment. Patients are often admitted on a voluntary basis, but people whom psychiatrists believe may pose a significant danger to themselves or others may be subject to involuntary commitment. Modern psychiatric hospitals evolved from, and eventually replaced the older lunatic asylums. The treatment of inmates in early lunatic asylums was sometimes brutal and focused on containment and restraint. With successive waves of reform, and the introduction of effective evidence-based treatments, modern psychiatric hospitals provide a primary emphasis on treatment, and attempt where possible to help patients control their own lives in the outside world, with the use of a combination of psychiatric drugs and psychotherapy. A crisis stabilization unit is in effect an emergency room for psychiatry, frequently dealing with suicidal, violent, or otherwise critical individuals. Open units are psychiatric units that are not as secure as crisis stabilization units. Another type of psychiatric hospital is medium term, which provides care lasting several weeks. In the United Kingdom, both crisis admissions and medium term care is usually provided on acute admissions wards. Juvenile or adolescent wards are sections of psychiatric hospitals or psychiatric wards set aside for children and/or adolescents with mental illness. Long-term care facilities have the goal of treatment and rehabilitation back into society within a short time-frame (two or three years). Another institution for the mentally ill is a community-based halfway house. YOUR PERIOD, hormones & mental health!

06:34
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy Click here to get the CLUE app: https://xq5r.app.link/w3R3TyXp4B Thank you to Clue for sponsoring this video! #ad There are so many hormones involved in our monthly menstrual cycle. They are responsible for the release of the egg, the building and shedding of our uterine lining, and how we feel! Here are the 5 hormones involved in our monthly cycle: 1. Estrogen! This is the one we hear about the most, and it is often called the growth hormone because it helps grow the lining of our uterus so that if we do become pregnant, it can keep the egg safe and help it grow. Estrogen is a female sex hormone that is produced in our ovaries, fat cells and our adrenal glands. 2. Progesterone. This one we don't hear about as often but it balances the effects of estrogen. Meaning, that if we aren't pregnant, our progesterone levels will rise and the lining of our uterus will shed. It is another female sex hormone, and it's fluctuation can also cause the symptoms of PMS and PMDD. 3. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH). This hormone helps stimulate our ovaries and mature an egg so that it can be ready to be released. 4. Luteinizing Hormone (LH). This hormone is responsible for the actual release of the mature egg. 5. Testosterone. This hormone increases right before our period and during ovulation. It increases our sex drive as well as helping keep our bone density and muscle mass up. So that if we do become pregnant, we can actually handle being pregnant and have the baby. We have a lot going on each and every month! So many hormones shifting and making our cycles possible. Whenever one of my clients talks about having bad PMS or PMDD I always ask them to track their mood. I often have them write it down each day so that we can see when it's hardest for them. That's why I decided to work with Clue app. It's a period tracking app that also allows you to track your mood and physical pain. The more you tell it, the better it gets at predicting your mood and PMS symptoms. Check it out! I find it helpful to know when we may feel bad so that we can plan ahead! xox ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ****PLEASE READ**** If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call a local emergency telephone number or go immediately to the nearest emergency room. ------------------------------------------ BIG THANK YOU to my Patreon Patrons! PARENTING with a MENTAL ILLNESS

05:54
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy I appreciate your videos Kati, but do you think you could reverse the roles and talk about being a parent with a mental illness? Kati, could you please do a video on how to be a good parent with severe mental illness? Many times the effects of having a parent with illness is talked about but there is limited education for parents on how to do their best to ensure their child is still able to have a secure attachment and healthy relationships. First I just want you all to know that if you have a mental illness you CAN have children. Many people asked questions about that, and of course you can! But just like any relationship or choice we make in life you need to be thoughtful about it and make sure that you are able to care for a child. A mental illness shouldn’t stop us from having a family, but it does come with the added task of managing our mental health too. Now let’s get into this question and talk about how we can be amazing parents even if we have a mental illness. First it’s important to actively engage in treatment - meaning take it seriously, keep your appointments, work your tools or techniques, and take your medication. Work as a family - if you have the option work together as a family unit, so that if you are having an off day another member of the family can help out, and visa versa. Supporting each other cannot only make home life more stable for our children, but also more supportive for us managing our mental health. Have outside support - whether that’s a support group, friends, family, whatever. Make sure you have a safe space to go to vent about all that may be going on. Learn to prioritize. Every day is going to be different, but if we always know that our child and our mental health are our number 1 priority, it can make other issues more manageable or possibly ignorable. Reminding ourselves of what’s important can help us better navigate through every day setbacks. Enroll your child in activities! I know it can be hard getting them to and from everything, but this gives them healthy outlets, gives them the chance to make friends, and be active. Tend to your basic needs! HALT (Hungry angry lonely tired) make sure that if you are feeling sick or extra tired that you take care of yourself. Otherwise how can we care for someone else? Just making sure we are eating well, sleeping well and feeling okay physically can minimize any mental health issues that could pop up. Create a safety plan! What should each member of the family do if you go into a manic episode? What if there is a suicide attempt? Put together a plan during a healthy and happy time with your therapist or psychiatrist and talk about it with your child and partner. Note what each person is supposed to do, who they should call, and leave it posted or in a place that’s easy to access if they forget. Don’t be afraid to communicate about your mental illness to your child. Things are scarier when we don’t understand them, so make sure you let your child know what you are struggling with, and assure them that it’s not their fault. We know that when children aren’t given proper explanations, they make up things to fill in the blanks. Give them all they need, so that they don’t have to make it up. This is also a great way to let them know that mental health isn’t something to be scared to talk about. Your Confidentiality in Therapy? Kati Morton

12:23
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy I hear so many questions about confidentiality in therapy and what will be kept or told when you are working on your struggles. As a therapist know that all mental health professionals take your confidentiality very seriously. We are tested over and over about it, are legally mandated in some ways to hold confidence or report things, and overall want you to feel safe talking to us about all that is going on. There are a few reasons that I would have to break confidentiality or when it's okay for me to do so. They are: 1. If you sign a release. If you sign something saying it's okay for me to talk to a family member or another member of your treatment team, then I will do just that. 2. Danger to self or others. If we worry that you are suicidal or a danger to someone else we will have to report this or place you on a 72 hour hold (5150) in order to keep you and everyone else safe. 3. Abuse. I am legally mandated to report child abuse, elder abuse, or dependent adult abuse. I can lose my license if I don't do so, and therefore I will report any abuse to either child protective services or adult protective services. 4. Court order. I haven't had to do this yet, but if your mental health or well being is brought into question within legal proceedings, I could be forced to break your confidentiality and speak in court. Now, some other commonly ask questions :) 1. Will my insurance know everything about my mental health care? The short answer is that NO they only know what your diagnosis is and part of your treatment plan. They only know things that ensure you get covered. 2. Will my employer find out about my therapy and what's going on? Again the answer is no. They will not. The only thing that an employer can find out is through an EAP questionnaire. It's main focus is really geared towards whether or not you are still able to do your job. 3. Help! I am under 18, will my parents find out everything about my therapy? The short answer is no, they won't know everything. However, as a therapist we are able to tell your parents anything we deem appropriate. So please ask your therapist what they will share, so that you are completely informed. 4. If you are over 18, but on parents insurance, will they find out everything?! No they won't find out everything, but they will receive an EOB (explanation of benefits) in the mail. An EOB just shows us what benefits we have used and what they have paid. 5. Lastly, what if I see my therapist out in public? Will they say hi? The truth is, no we will not approach you to say hi, but you can come over and say hi to us :) I hope you found this helpful! Please share! Everyone deserves to know their rights when it comes to confidentiality! xox APA article: http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/confidentiality.aspx BIG THANK YOU to my Patreon Patrons! Extreme Hunger in Eating Disorder Recovery

07:18
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy Extreme hunger in recovery when we have struggled with a restrictive type of an eating disorder. What that means is that we are eating what is on our meal plan and yet we are still really really hungry! Why? It can be so triggering and cause our ED voice to sneak back in and tell us that we can't keep eating like this and that we will keep gaining weight. Don't listen! Instead watch this video and fight back! Truth is, that our hunger is based on how much damage was done to our body during our eating disorder. This has nothing to do with weight or type of eating disorder. This has everything to do with your body and what it has been put through. So listen to it, because it will tell you what it needs. It is also very common to crave sugars, carbs, and fats when we are in recovery. This is okay because our body just needs easily processed energy to keep it going. It is working overtime and is going to need energy that is can get quickly. We obviously still need to have a well rounded diet, but that's why those cravings are there and it's okay to listen to them. Lastly, no you won't keep gaining weight! Hooray! As crazy as it sounds, if we are eating when we are hungry and stopping when we are full we will only be giving our body what is needs. Wild huh? So you can trust it, HONEST! So do your best to listen to your body and give it what it asks for. Just make sure to check in and know whether that craving or want is coming from your body or your emotions. Also, when we are under weight and are in recovery it is normal to regain most of our weight on our torso. That's because all of our organs are there and our body is trying to keep all its energy close to where it needs to do most of its repairs. This weight will redistribute, we just have to be patient and give it time to heal. I hope this helps! I know many people worry about listening to their body's hunger and fullness cues. But trust me, they only tell you the truth! So listen up!! xoxo BIG THANK YOU to my Patreon Patrons! What Should YOU Expect From Therapy?

05:40
Therapy, counseling, psychotherapy, whatever you want to call it, it can help to see a mental health professional for support sometimes. Know that we can look into seeing a therapist in our area for many reasons. Maybe we want to sleep better, perhaps we are dealing with infidelity or trying to feel less anxious. While we can reach out to see someone at any time, and do not have to be in crisis to do so, but it is important that we know what we want to get out of it. Many people assume that the therapist will just guide you and you don’t have to really know what you want to get out of it, but that is not true. In a way, you are the boss of your own therapy. You get to decide what your goals are, what you want to improve, and how you want to get there. A therapist’s job is to assess how you are doing, ask the right questions to move you towards your goals, and offer tips, techniques and tools that could help. So prior to going into therapy consider what it is you want to get out of it, or at least what it is you don’t like about your life. Therapy won’t “fix” everything right away, nor can a therapist fix any of your problems. I know many of you know this, but it just needs to be said. Actually working in our own therapy is hard work!! Yes it can be exhausting, and yes we may want to give up, but it’s not up to our therapist to work harder than we are. In fact, if your therapist is doing more work in therapy than you are, it’s a bad sign and means that the therapeutic relationship may need looking into..this can be caused by lack of healthy boundaries in therapy, not seeing the right therapist or seeing someone we like but who doesn’t practice the type of therapy we need. As far as homework goes, some therapists believe in it while others don’t. Those who do tend to be more like me, and they are more behavioral/directive type therapists. Others are more the “talk therapy” type where they believe that talking it out and getting feedback in session is enough, and that you will slowly get the root of your issues that way. Consider what style you may like prior to seeing a therapist and know that you can ask questions before making your first appt! You can ask for them to email you their resume so you can see where they got their training and education, you can ask what styles of therapy they practice, and you can even ask how they treat any issue you may be struggling with. So ask questions and pick someone you feel will help you most. Trusting in the therapeutic process will take time. It takes time to feel comfortable talking with someone new, and getting into the real work. That’s why I always encourage you to ask to create a treatment plan together as soon as possible. This will not only empower you in the process, but it can also ensure that you are both working towards the same goals. This also allows you to check up on your therapy and see what progress is being made. But if you prefer a less structured type of therapy, it is also okay to do check ins with your therapist about the process every couple of months (or whatever feels good to you). Letting them know if you are feeling tired, overwhelmed, or like what you’re doing isn’t working. The last thing I want to mention is that if we feel ourselves getting worse, please let your therapist know! It’s not a bad thing to be doing worse, it actually gives us more information about you and what you are struggling with. It can also tell us that the tools and things we have been working on isn’t helping enough. So we may need to increase our sessions each week, or possibly get into a more intensive program. Therapy isn’t about making your therapist proud or worrying that they will be upset about your progress… therapy is about you getting the right help you need when you need it most. Love you xo 2. #katiFAQ How do I help overcome sh urges. I have been trying to stop for a few months now but I just recently relapsed. I know it's normal but it really makes me sad to see that I wasn't strong enough this time. 3. #katiFAQ Alright so I have been friends with my best friend for the past 5 or so years. She has been there for my lowest lows and some of my higher highs. But lately all we seem to do it butt heads when it pertains to certain topics of discussion. I love her to death, but want to kill her figuratively. I kind of am leaning towards ending this friendship because that is how different our points of view have become and she would rather listen to a podcast instead of hear me out. What would you do if you were in my shoes? 4. I have been in therapy for 3yrs. I have decided that I want to recover but what do I do next? How do i go about starting my recovery after being in therapy for so long? What do i do next? Journal Topic: Another Journal Topic/Quote: SNAP! Surround yourself with supportive people that love you. 4 Tips to fight Depression during the Holidays - Mental Health Help with Kati Morton

Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy help subtitle this video: http://www.amara.org/en/videos/LtbZw9buZTzh/info/ The holidays can be such a stressful time for all of us, especially if we are struggling with depression. Not only do the holidays usually involve family, they also involve spending money and it is all done in a pretty short time period. So no wonder we are feeling especially down!! Here are 4 helpful tips to fight our depression during the holiday season: 1. Prepare and plan ahead: make some extra therapy appts, set a budget, maybe we buy a lightbox, join a group, etc 2. Volunteer! It can not only help other people survive their holidays, but force us to get out of the house and get some perspective on our own situation. 3. Take a break and give yourself some space. Although we don't want to isolate all the time (because that can make our depression worse) but sometimes we just need a break from a party or a difficult family member. Know that you can always step away and go to the bathroom or step outside for some fresh air. Anything to help you breathe and feel okay enough to re-engage. 4. Setting reasonable and achievable goals: Not measuring our life to others or what is portrayed in the media can help us stay focused on what we do have and where we are at now. Being thankful for those things can help us feel better about our situation and keep us focused on what's important. Making these goals achievable also helps us feel better about our situation and celebrate each step we have made to better our life :) Happy Holidays everyone!! You will have the opportunity to hear from four experts by experience, who assisted Mary Ellen Copeland to author the workbook, and how each is living WRAP in his/her life. This video examines the 2 types of triggers: standard triggers and emotional buttons and I discuss the differences and the impact each has on how you respond when they occur. Manage triggers/emotional buttons: 1. Identify your standard triggers & emotional buttons 2. Recognize the difference in how they feel & impact your thoughts, feelings & memories. 3. Plan out how you are going to respond in an adaptive & healthy manner when you become activated by a person or event 4. Play this plan out in your mind over & over again, practice it 5. Have some positive coping strategies you can access, such as mindfulness, strategic healthy distraction, yoga, etc. 6. The more you practice this, the more you will maintain your control. Daniel J. DBT Skill: Radical Acceptance - Mental Health Help with Kati Morton

Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy Today I'm talking about "Radical acceptance" which is a Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skill. One of the four options you have for any problem is Radical Acceptance (Linehan, 1993). Radical Acceptance is a tool used in the moment to help us overcome our overwhelming emotions. This can stop the cycle of suffering that we often find ourselves in because we go over and over a situation wishing that the outcome would have been different. By doing this we are re-injuring ourselves, and are unable to move past things that have happened in our lives. Radical Acceptance helps us stop wishing there had been a different outcome. It helps us recognize that what happens is a result of a million other things, and most importantly, it helps us develop healthier and happier relationships. So give it a try!! See how it can help you and please share any mantra you use to help you in the moment! Is recovery worth the cost? Facebook Friday! #KatiFAQ

12:08
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy Facebook Friday! 1. Can I ask my question here for Facebook Friday? #Katifaq hey Kati, I have a lot of mental health problems which are just getting ignored by every therapist I've ever had. I found a new therapist but she is $200/hr. I'm wondering if its really worth it? I dropped out of university and am struggling bad right now... And $200 is my whole paycheck I also need skills training apparently and other things that will cost more. I have PTSD, mdd, and BPD. Is the cost of treatment really going to be worth it? 2. I'm wondering if emotional eating and intuitive eating are oppositional? Is it normal that the eating behavior is influenced by mood or should we try to avoid it if we're intuitively eating? What about the holidays? Celebrating them is often also expressed by food and eating (emotional eating?). Or do we celebrate by eating food of other kind and quality instead of raising the amount? 3. 1.How do i make peace with my past ,how do i basically forgive and forget people who have hurt ,betrayed put me down including parents, relatives ,friends. I am holding on to lot. Journal Topic Idea: Thanks Annika S.!! "You can't have a better tomorrow, if you don't stop thinking about yesterday." This is my recovery quote from depression and bulimia 'cause I think once in a while we should try to realize that no matter how bad the day has been that we have a new chance everyday to make the best out of it. We're not trapped in the thoughts forever! Don't know if that's a real journal topic but more like a little inspiration... Love your videos!! BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER: In a relationship with someone with BPD

09:06
Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy Let’s define what Borderline Personality Disorder (or BPD) really is, and what it can mean for those in relationship with someone who has it. Now BPD is a mental illness marked by an ongoing pattern of varying moods, self-image, and behavior. These symptoms often result in impulsive actions and problems in relationships. Some of the symptoms I am talking about are: Intense fear of rejection, separation, or abandonment - Rapid changes between thinking someone is perfect to believing they are evil - Risky behaviors including unsafe sex, gambling, drug use, or accumulating credit card debt - Threats of suicide or self-harm - Difficulty empathizing with other people - Mood swings from euphoria to intense shame or self-criticism - and frequently losing one’s temper. People with borderline personality disorder tend to view things in extremes, such as all good or all bad. Their opinions of other people can also change quickly. An individual who is seen as a friend one day may be considered an enemy or traitor the next. My BPD Vid: https://youtu.be/zPopjuKuweg Book links: https://goo.gl/sGnTU2 https://goo.gl/QWRVew Ways to manage a relationship with someone with BPD: 1. Learn about Borderline Personality Disorder. How can we manage something we don’t even understand? We can’t! 2. Trying to keep your home life with them as calm and relaxed as possible. Those with BPD do really well in situations that are predictable, so keeping home life as upset free as possible is best, and can often mitigate any crisis they may be feeling. 3. Keeping it simple. Since those with BPD can be constantly reacting out of their emotion mind (meaning it’s not very logical or reasonable) it will be hard for them to actually hear and understand what you are saying without getting upset and lashing back at you. 4. Creating and upholding healthy boundaries. Those with BPD need boundaries. Setting a boundary can sometimes snap them out of their delusional thinking. 5. Next, calling their bluff also is helpful. Creating boundaries and calling their bluff both require that you build up their self-esteem first. Meaning that you can’t enter a relationship with them calling them on all their shit, and telling them they are crossing a boundary. 6. Take their suicide or self injury threats seriously. 7. Encourage them to seek therapy. Unlike other diagnosis, most BPD people welcome the idea of therapy. I believe this is because they are uncomfortable with how they feel, and would love to find a way to make it stop. Which is why there is hope, and many people with BPD do fully recover, so supporting them in these efforts can be great for your lasting relationship. 8. Get outside emotional support. We all need this in relationships, but especially if we are trying to remain calm and supportive maybe when we don’t feel like it at all. Having other friends and family members we can lean on when we need it. Make time for that as well as some regular self care. What happens when you call the suicide hotline?!? Website/YouTube Wednesday #KatiFAQ

Pre-order My New Book Today! ARE YOU OK? http://bit.ly/2s0mULy Website/YouTube Wednesday 1. if u call suicide hotline who will u be talking to? What will they say? What will they do? What will happen? What will they ask? BTW this is for a friend not me she has thoughts and wants to know what will happen if she calls Thanks! 2. Hey Kati.Is it normal to judge others and immediately find them unnactractive and ugly?I really hate to judge others because no one has the right to and I try to replace that with positive thoughts and it helps. Why is that happening by the way?I have really low self esteem if that helps. 3. #katifaq Is it normal to have trouble deciding whether it's your healthy voice or ed voice telling you to eat/ exercise? For example sometimes I've already eaten a decent meal and I cannot tell if my healthy voice is telling me to eat because I didn't eat enough or if it is my ed voice telling me to binge. The same with exercising, I do it to be healthy, but my ed wants me to do it excessively to burn calories. Any advice? Thanks:) 4. I am 38 and seeking out professional help for the first time to deal with issues from being abused as a child. My dad, mom, and brother were all abusive to me in different ways growing up. Mom is gone now, but I fear that my therapist will want me to confront my dad and/or brother or write them out of my life and I don't want to do either. My relationships with them may not be "perfect" but they are still a part of my life and I still love them very much. The only outcome to confronting them that I can envision would be damaging for both of us. Journal Topic: Music therapy? What does that mean to you? Have you tried it before?
