How to make your writing suspenseful - Victoria Smith

Hideous monsters and fountains of blood might seem like a good place to start, but as horror author H.P. Lovecraft wrote, “The oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” Writers harness that fear not by revealing horrors, but by leaving the audience hanging in a state of suspense. Victoria Smith gives some tips for adding suspense to your writing. Lesson by Victoria Smith, directed by Silvia Prietov. Thank you so much to our patrons for your support! Why education, not punishment, is the solution to reducing crime | John Lonergan | TEDxDublin

16:15
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. John Lonergan argues that poverty and social deprivation are the main contributory factors to young people getting involved in crime and believes that education is the only pathway out of the poverty trap. John Lonergan joined the Irish prison service in March 1968. He was appointed Governor of Mountjoy Prison in 1984 and served in that capacity for over 22 years. He retired from the prison service in June 2010 having served over 42 years. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The Middle East's cold war, explained

How two feuding countries are tearing apart the Middle East. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO The Saudis and Iranians have never actually declared war on each other. Instead, they fight indirectly by supporting opposing sides in other countries and inciting conflicts. This is known as proxy warfare. And it’s had a devastating effect on the region. Countries, especially poor ones, can’t function if there are larger countries pulling strings within their borders. And that’s exactly what's happening in the Middle East. The Saudi-Iranian rivalry has become a fight over influence, and the whole region is a battlefield. The Making of Asian America tells the little-known history of Asian Americans and their role in American life, from the arrival of the first Asians in the Americas to the present-day. Christopher Columbus: What Really Happened

05:39
Check out my new video about the First Thanksgiving on my new channel, "Uncivil History" here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ociHVDWxDaY&t=2s Subscribe for more videos: http://goo.gl/Z8E50 An educational animation which recounts the four voyages of Columbus. Hope you enjoy! Bibliography at bottom of description AUTHOR'S NOTE: This video is meant to give a non-bias account of the events which unfolded when Columbus and his crew made contact with the people of the Caribbean. Of course, I was not able to fit everything into the video; I had to omit details, such as the fact that the Taino were not the only people that Columbus encountered (there were also the Ciguayo tribe and Carib cannibals). A second particular is that not all fault should lie directly on Columbus' shoulders. His crew of 1,200 for the second journey consisted partly of convicts and landless nobles, the worst type of people with which to build a settlement. Another fact is that Columbus grew up in societies (Genoa, then Portugal) that kept domestic slaves. I have no political agenda for making this video. I am a student of history and I have tried to give an account of Columbus' journeys that is as close as we can possibly get to the truth. I will I admit that I am not a fan of Columbus. I think he was cruel, even for his time. We cannot judge a 15th-century human from a 21st-century perspective; but even for the 15th century, he was an awful arbiter. Sources: Bergreen, Laurence. Democrats Blindsided By Midterm Investigation – Their Blue Wave Is Collapsing

04:11
Please Help Me To 100,000 Sub : American Patriot : https://bit.ly/2yOF8Xi Democrats Blindsided By Midterm Investigation – Their Blue Wave Is Collapsing Show up and give the these people a clear and loud message! From Fox News: Republican Brian Kemp, Georgia’s secretary of state, is investigating the state’s Democratic Party for “possible cyber crimes” related to an alleged attempted hack on state voting infrastructure, his office announced Sunday, throwing a seismic wrench into Kemp’s neck-and-neck gubernatorial race against Democrat Stacey Abrams with less than 48 hours to go before Election Day. “Federal partners” — including the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI — also have been notified about the “failed attempt to hack the state’s voter registration system” as of Saturday night, Kemp’s office said. While we cannot comment on the specifics of an ongoing investigation, I can confirm that the Democratic Party of Georgia is under investigation for possible cyber crimes,” Kemp Press Secretary Candice Broce said in a press release. “We can also confirm that no personal data was breached and our system remains secure.” @TheAmandaShea Dems spent a record $5.2 BILLION on Midterms, Outspending GOP by $330mil! They're notoriously bad with money and didn't learn their lesson in 2016 Presidential Election. In an updated statement early Sunday afternoon, Kemp’s office added: “We opened an investigation into the Democratic Party of Georgia after receiving information from our legal team about failed efforts to breach the online voter registration system and My Voter Page.” The Georgia My Voter Page (MVP) allows voters who log-in with their first initial, last name, county, and date of birth to check their registration status and other information, including the status of any mail-in and absentee ballots. The MVP is managed by Kemp’s office. The new statement continues: “We are working with our private sector vendors and investigators to review data logs. We have contacted our federal partners and formally requested the Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate these possible cyber crimes. The Secretary of State’s office will release more information as it becomes available.” NORTH DAKOTA DEMOCRATIC PARTY, IN APPARENT VOTER SUPPRESSION EFFORT, FALSELY CLAIMS HUNTERS MAY LOSE LICENSES IF THEY VOTE Reached by Fox News, the FBI’s press office said it had no comment Sunday afternoon. In response to Kemp’s allegation, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Democratic Party was livid, writing that the “scurrilous claims are 100 percent false” and lambasting the probe as “another example of abuse of power” by the secretary of state. Kemp and former Georgia state House minority leader Stacey Abrams are locked in a tight contest Fox News currently considers a toss-up. The two are vying to replace term-limited GOP Gov. Nathan Deal, and Abrams could become the state’s first black governor. Kemp has the backing of Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker, while Abrams boasts the endorsement of Oprah Winfrey. Kemp has previously said he wouldn’t recuse himself as Georgia’s secretary of state if his race with Abrams goes to a recount, even though his office would be overseeing that process. “This political stunt from Kemp just days before the election is yet another example of why he cannot be trusted and should not be overseeing an election in which he is also a candidate for governor,” the Georgia Democratic Party’s executive director, Rebecca DeHart, said in a statement. “Georgians of all political stripes are very concerned about election security and the security of Georgians’ personal information,” DeHart added in a fresh statement later in the day. “The Democratic Party of Georgia shares that concern, but we did not create, discover, or attempt to take advantage of the deeply vulnerable system used by the Secretary of State’s office.” She continued: “As Kemp aims to deflect blame for his failures, the questions everyone must be asking is: Why was the system vulnerable in the first place? Why has Brian Kemp still not taken basic steps to secure Georgians’ personal information?” DeHart charged that, in 2016, “Kemp was one of the only secretaries of state in the country to refuse help from the Department of Homeland Security to improve election security, leaving Georgians vulnerable to foreign cyber attacks. #Democrats#Blindsided#By#Midterm#Investigation#Their#Blue#Wave#Is#Collapsing

Kaiser Permanente ... Teaching ... Crimes! To Their GME Program Doctors

03:15
After thousands of years of accumulated medical knowledge that benefited and continue to benefit the human kind in other countries, -a catastrophe happened in USA. The HMO Act of 1973. "The Birth of the HMO" is the product of the other side of human kind, the devilish one -the combination of greed, madness and perversity. The expression, in my opinion, of psycho-schizophrenic minds, real beasts hidden inside human bodies capable to butcher another human. How else could I express and explain the actions of Kaiser Permanente and its half human, half beasts doctors, that trashed and wiped out Hippocrates's Oath and transformed the noble art of Medicine into an instrument to butcher, torture and get rich and richer! The HMO Act of 1973, did just that. It openned the doors to the organized crime, criminalized medicine, using human being as a vehicle to easy money, big money, making billions of dollars in profits each year at the cost of human life and tax payers money. This was one of "The human kind biggest catastrophe." Humans in pain, suffering and in need of medical help, the poor human lives that ends up in the hands of Kaiser Permanente and doctors like Timoty Wilfred Wild ... and other creatures of the same kind. Just like Dr. Mengele. He picked out Ms. Stein and perhaps millions of other patients, dragged her into his operating table, to butcher her body,-in the name of greed and the madness. Kaiser Permanente doctors have been doing this for many years... for profit, to train students, to conduct illegal experiments and clinical trials while thousands of victims complains and uselessly seeks justice, while the Department of Justice, watches silently and do NOTHING! "When Justice ends, Tyranny begins", that's the famous forgotten inscription and lesson still visible, high up on one of the US Washington DC Justice Department's exterior walls. The birth of HMO's measures the catastrophic impact on humans life when wrongly elected officials disregard the US Constitution and The Universal Human Rights, giving Kaiser Permanente HMO a license to butcher and kill for profit, the right to became nothing else more than another tyrant out of control. "All man-made big disasters started with a mad man's obsession with money and power, and his ability to corrupt others" = Marin Pitu "Evil THRIVES when the good people remain silent or take no action." Please educate yourselves about Kaiser Permanente criminal organization . Watch what they have done to another patient: -Mr, Marin Pitu Kaiser Permanente Crimes - The Marin Pitu Story Part 3 http://youtu.be/gJWhultZw1I Thank you Jupirena Stein

Chossudovsky: War in Afghanistan: A Crime Against Humanity

05:56
The decade-long war waged by the US and its allies in Afghanistan does not seem to be coming to an end. With tremendous civilian casualties and a ruined economy and institutions, the justification for the war seems to be dubious and ill-considered. The war against Afghanistan was an act of illegal aggression by the United States and NATO despite its being presented as a response to 9/11, believes Michel Chossudovsky, editor at the Centre for Research on Globalization. However, "Afghanistan as a country was not behind the attack," he underlines. The legacy of the war which started in 2001 is a wrecked economy and institutions, lack of public health and mass unemployment, he adds. Chossudovsky doubts that it is possible to plan a large-scale war in Central Asia in just four weeks. "The war on Afghanistan was on the drawing board of the Pentagon. It was in advanced stages of planning before 9/11," he claims. "And 9/11 provided the pretext and justification for waging a war on a sovereign country, an impoverished country in Central Asia," he says, labeling it as a fabricated pretext. "This war still stands out as violation of international law and a crime against humanity," he claims. On the eve of the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, former commander of coalition forces in Afghanistan, has harshly criticized the US campaign in Afghanistan, claiming that allied forces are only "50 per cent of the way" towards achieving their goals. The retired general said, "We didn't know enough and we still don't know enough. Most of us, me included, had a very superficial understanding of the situation and history, and we had a frighteningly simplistic view of recent history, the last 50 years." According to Michel Chossudovsky, "the statement by General McChrystal is a cynical statement." He notes that it somehow suggests that this is a humanitarian operation to come to the rescue of the people of Afghanistan, while all the evidence demonstrates quite the opposite. Originally aired on RT on October 7, 2011, on the 10th anniversary of the NATO invasion of Afghanistan http://rt.com/news/war-afghanistan-crime-humanity-327/

Why are we trying kids as adults? | Michele Deitch | TEDxAmherstCollege

16:52
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Michele Deitch, an expert on prison reform and juvenile justice and an award-winning teacher at the University of Texas, addresses the problem of youth who are prosecuted in the adult criminal justice system and confined in adult jails and prisons. She describes the troubling conditions she has witnessed, and discusses the kids she has encountered in the course of her work who have persuaded her about the need to change the laws and policies that permit this practice. Michele Deitch ’82 is a Senior Lecturer at The University of Texas at Austin, where she holds a joint appointment at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs and the UT School of Law and teaches graduate-level courses in criminal justice and juvenile justice policy. Trained as a lawyer, her particular expertise includes juveniles in the adult system, the management of juvenile offenders, and prison conditions and independent correctional oversight, and she has authored numerous publications on these issues that have garnered national attention. Along with her students, Deitch works closely with Texas legislators and other key stakeholders to conduct research that helps inform and shape policy and practice. Deitch has been the recipient of a Soros Senior Justice Fellowship, as well as numerous awards for her teaching and commitment to service-learning. She holds a J.D. with honors from Harvard Law School, an M.Sc. in psychology (with a specialization in criminology) from Oxford University (Balliol College), and a B.A. with honors from Amherst College, where she also served on the Board of Trustees. Crimes of the Banks Exposed - UBUNTU Party

06:50
Michael Tellinger from the UBUNTU Party exposes how the South African Reserve Bank and their foot soldiers, all the private banks in our country, commit crimes against our people, unlawfully closing their accounts and stealing their money. In this case the SARB and STANDARD BANK stole around R320 million rand from a network marketing team that was getting too big and too wealthy. SARB simply closed their account and kept their money falsely accusing them of all kinds of activities. This group consists of around 190,000 people, many of whom are now pledging their support for the UBUNTU Party to prevent this from happening in future. UBUNTU Party will replace the privately owned Reserve Bank, by a PEOPLE'S BANK that will create money for the people, by the people and supply money free of tax, levies, interest or any other charges, for all activities in our communities - creating 100% employment and allowing all of us to live beautiful lives of abundance, free of all debt. The main function of a PEOPLE'S BANK is to provide the money that communities need in all areas of their activity. Home loans at 0% interest and no more repossessions.

Amnesty report warns of crime against humanity in Syria

02:28
Amnesty International says the Syrian government's ‘surrender or starve’ campaign targeting civilians constitutes a crime against humanity. It's calling for an end to what it calls ‘the dark stain on the world's conscience’. A new report says government forces surrounded and bombed densely-populated, opposition-controlled areas. Thousands of people were given an ultimatum to abandon their homes or die. The report condemns not only the Syrian government but also some armed opposition groups. The Blood of Emmett Till

01:19:08
In 1955, a fourteen-year-old young black man named Emmett Till was visiting relatives in Mississippi when he was murdered by a group of white men after making flirtatious remarks to a white woman. Till’s attackers were never convicted, but Till’s lynching became one of the most notorious hate crimes in American history and launched the Civil Rights Movement. In his latest book, The Blood of Emmett Till, Professor Timothy B. Tyson, reexamines this monumental event using a wide range of new sources, interviews, and transcripts and redefines a crucial moment in civil rights history. A book signing follows the program.

No more mistakes with MODALS! 3 Easy Rules

09:57
Do modals confuse you? Are you unsure how to use the words can, could, may, might, should, ought, must, have to, shall, will, or would? Watch this lesson and learn three easy rules to use modals correctly in English, once and for all! TEST YOURSELF WITH THE QUIZ: https://www.engvid.com/modals-3-easy-rules/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. I'm Rebecca from engVid. In this lesson you'll learn how to use modal verbs properly, and how to avoid making the most common mistakes that students sometimes make when using these special helping verbs. Now, even though modal verbs doesn't sound that exciting, when you see what they are you'll realize that we use these verbs all the time, and so you need to know how to use them correctly. Right? Okay. So, let's look at what modal verbs are. So, these are words that express different kinds of things. For example, they might express ability, possibility, permission, obligation. Okay? And some other things like that. And they behave differently from regular verbs, and that's why they're sometimes a little bit confusing. But let's look at some examples of what modal verbs are. "Can", "could", "may", "might", "should", "ought to", "must", "have to", "will", "shall", and "would". Okay? These are the most common ones. All right. So, I'm going to give you now three basic rules that you can follow to avoid most of the mistakes that are usually made with the modal verbs. Okay? So, first of all, make sure to use the modal verb as is. That means don't change it in the present, or the past, or the future. For example, we can say: "He can swim." This is a correct sentence. It would be wrong to say: "He cans swim." Because, here, the student put an extra "s" there. All right? And we don't need to change that modal verb ever. Okay? All right. Second, use the base form of the verb after a modal. Don't use "to". What do I mean by that? For example, you should say: "He might join us." Not: "He might to join us." Okay? This is a really common error, so make sure you don't make this one. So don't use the full infinitive to join after a word like "might". Just use the base form of the verb, which is: "join". "He might join us.", "He could join us.", "He should join us.", "He must join us." and so on, without "to". All right? Very good. Now, the next point is if you need to, say, use the modal verb in the negative form, then just use "not" after the modal. All right? Don't add any extra words most the time; there's one little exception, I'll explain that to you, but for most of them, don't use words like: "don't", or "doesn't", or "isn't", "aren't", "wasn't", "won't". Okay? So, with most of these modal verbs just say "not". For example: "You should not smoke." Not: "You don't should smoke." All right? So, here the student knows and learned all these lovely words: "don't", "doesn't", "isn't", "aren't", all that and try to use it when using the modal verb, but that's wrong. Okay? So, the only exception is with the verb... With the modal verb "have to", there if you want to make it negative, you need to say: "You don't have to do this", okay? But with the other ones, we just say: "You cannot", "You could not", "You may not", "You might not", "You should not", "You ought not to", okay? So there you have to be careful where to place it. "You must not", this one I told you is an exception. "You will not", "You shall not", and "You would not". Okay? And the other thing to keep in mind when you're using this word and "not", this is a really common mistake, so the important thing to remember: This actually becomes one word. Okay? Only in that case. You don't say... You say: "cannot", but it's actually one word. All right? Most of the time, almost always "not" is a separate word with all of the modal verbs. But not with "can". With "can" it actually becomes one word: "I cannot arrive"-okay?-"on time", like that. Okay? So, now that you've got these basic rules and you've understood how it works, let's do some practice to see how well you've understood. Okay, so let's get started with our exercises. Now, the rules are written at the top just in case you didn't remember them exactly. First one, remember use it as it is, don't change the modal verb. Second one, use with the base verb. Don't use the full infinitive "to" something. And the last one: Use "not" after the modals when it's negative. Okay? All right. Try to keep those in mind, but most of all let's look at the actual examples and you tell me what's wrong with them. There is something wrong with each and every one of these sentences. Okay. Number one: "You must to finish your homework. You must to finish your homework." What's wrong there? What did the person do wrong? They added "to". All right? This was our second rule. Right? You cannot use "to".
