Dr. Robert Heaney - Why Test Vitamin D!?

41:22
with Robert P. Heaney, MD, Professor, Creighton University, Department of Medicine and Research Director of GrassrootsHealth Vitamin D is a consumed co-factor in the expression of over 2,000 genes. Necessarily, therefore, low vitamin D status limits cellular response to a myriad of signals and stressors. The result is that vitamin D inadequacy increases the risk of the major chronic diseases and leads to reduced longevity. While only the most severe degrees of deficiency produce overt clinically apparent symptoms and signs, most Americans have some degree of vitamin D inadequacy. Therapeutic adequacy depends not on dose but on achieved serum level, which can only be ascertained by measurement. 25(OH)D response to therapeutic doses of vitamin D varies over a six-fold range, and is hence difficult to predict. Refer to Dr. Heaney's published work, "Vitamin D Supplement Doses and Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D in the Range Associated with Cancer Prevention" (http://www.grassrootshealth.net/media/download/12928garland021811.pdf), for more information on this topic. Try Passion 4 Life at http://www.P4LNutrition.com or call: 888-954-7231 (30 day money back guarantee!) Hi, today I would like to talk to you about Vitamin D. My name is Charles Van Kessler. I’m a nutritional researcher. Vitamin D deficiency is a major problem in the United States. But many Americans are not aware that they may be lacking this important nutrient. Although word is beginning to leak out, even among the traditional medical community testing for Vitamin D, it will not skyrocket like cholesterol because there is no expensive drug to push. It is essential to understand that in order to know how much Vitamin D you should be taking you should get your blood level checked. Unfortunately very few doctors do blood test for Vitamin D. You can’t rely on the media to expose the issue. If and when they do it will be too late for most of you and you might have suffered decreased bone density in an increased risk of many other different diseases including certain cancers. There are two kinds of Vitamin D that the body can use; one is the anti-aging miracle, that makes waves in medical journals around the world, the other is a cheap ineffective and was deemed nearly worthless buddy the esteemed journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism. Vitamin D is often crammed into hard to swallow pills and tablets because they are dirt cheap to produce. Vitamin D3 however is as premium as it gets. In fact scientists at the Creighton University of South Carolina prove with a controllable double-blind study that revealed that Vitamin D3 is 300% more effective than D2. It’s the Vitamin D3 that is much more powerful and that’s the kind that’s being used in these head turning studies. Vitamin D3 can help you protect your body from the ravages of aging. The journal of clinical investigation reports that Vitamin D3 may play a pivotal role in helping to keep your blood pressure healthy. The archives of internal medicine revealed the strong connection between D3 in cardiovascular health. When you buy vitamin please always buy natural, all food based liquid vitamin and minerals and make sure that always has a minimum offered 1000 units of D3. Vitamin D3 can make your life worth living. It’s probably the most important ingredient for health and well-being. Vitamin D sufficiency along with proper diet and exercise is known as one of the most important factors in disease prevention and human health. Some of the associated Vitamin D deficiency symptoms are bone pain and muscle pain, allergies, Alzheimer's, cancer of the breast, colon prostate, severe depression, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, Parkinsons, learning and behavior disorders and others. So how important is it to find a good liquid product with adequate Vitamin D3. Try Passion 4 Life at httpw://ww.P4LNutrition.com or call: 888-954-7231 (30 day money back guarantee!)

Vitamin D supplements don't improve bone health, study finds

07:06
London (CNN)Vitamin D supplements do not improve bone mineral density or prevent fractures or falls in adults, finds a large study that advises health professionals to stop recommending the supplements to most patients. The vitamin has long been associated with a decreased risk of a number of conditions, such as osteoporosis and hypertension, in addition to keeping bones strong by helping the body absorb calcium -- which is why many use it during the dark winter months. But the study's authors say there is "little justification" in doing so when it comes to bone health. "Our meta-analysis finds that vitamin D does not prevent fractures, falls or improve bone mineral density, whether at high or low dose," lead author Dr. Mark J. Bolland, associate professor at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, said in a statement. The findings add to previous research suggesting that vitamin D supplements do not prevent disease for the majority.Read MoreThe research, published in the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, analyzed data from 81 randomized controlled trials -- involving more than 53,000 people -- that studied whether the over-the-counter supplement helped in fractures, falls and bone density. Most studies included women over the age of 65.The team concluded that vitamin D does not prevent fractures or falls, or have a meaningful effect on bone mineral density, concluding that there is little justification in taking them to "maintain or improve musculoskeletal health," adding that there is no need for more trials to explore this. But the research also concludes the supplement is helpful in preventing rare conditions such as rickets and osteomalacia in high risk groups, which can occur after a prolonged lack of exposure to sunshine, resulting in deficiency. Not a cure-allBolland suggests doctors and health officials currently recommending the vitamin to older patients as a way to prevent osteoporosis or brittle bones should stop. "Clinical guidelines should be changed to reflect these findings," he said. In a related comment article, J. Chris Gallagher of the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska said "the context for this analysis lies in the fact that many patients (and doctors) have been persuaded by various studies and social media that vitamin D is a cure-all.""This thinking is reminiscent of the fervour that supported the widespread use of vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E years ago, and all of those vitamin trials later proved to be clinically negative."The suggested extra-skeletal health benefits include cancer and heart disease, which previous research has shown to be inconclusive. Ongoing debateCritics of the Lancet study noted that only 6% of the trials were done in populations with vitamin D deficiency, who would stand to benefit most from supplementation. "We know from meta-analyses that have managed to obtain individual participant data that the health benefits of vitamin D supplementation tend to be most marked in peo

Help Reduce the Risk of Breast Cancer

01:17
A recent study concluded that increased levels of Vitamin D may reduce the risk of breast cancer. Of the more than 5500 women over age 55 that participated, those that had higher Vitamin D levels of 60 nanograms per milliliter in their blood levels had an 80% lower risk for breast cancer. The study, conducted by Creighton University, concluded that in order to help minimize the risk of breast cancer, Vitamin D levels in women need to be above the levels currently recommended for bone health. The safety of higher levels of Vitamin D was also demonstrated in this study. We’d love for you to like and share this video. Breast Cancer and Vitamin D

07:27
Anew study on the association between vitamin D and the reduced risk of breast cancer suggests that higher concentrations of the micronutrients may be a factor.Research on the role of vitamin D and its influence on breast cancer isn’t new.Data has shown that women with low levels of the vitamin are at higher risk for developing the cancer. But there isn’t enough evidence yet to directly link high levels of vitamin D to a decreased risk for breast cancer. This new study, conducted by researchers at the University of California San Diego in collaboration with Creighton University, Medical University of South Carolina, and Grassroots Health, may shed some new light on relationship between the two.Dr.Scott Christensen, professor of hematology and oncology at University of California Davis and medical director at the U.C.Davis Cancer Care Network, told Healthline he was cautiously optimistic about the study. He likened it to an “informational advancement” on the role of vitamin D in relation to the development of breast cancer.“We’ve gone from [thinking] vitamin D may help to maybe now there are different levels that can help,” he said.“It certainly raises some very provocative questions about the role of vitamin D.” The findings are based on a meta-analysis of previously conducted clinical trials. One of the studies involved more than 3,300 participants and the other had more than 1,700 participants. The studies were conducted between 2002 and 2017.All participants were women over the age of 55 and cancer-free at the time of enrollment.During the trials they were given both vitamin D and calcium supplements and were followed for a mean period of four years. The crux of the study is the concentration of vitamin D found within blood.Researchers referred to it as serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, or 25(OH)D, which is the main marker of vitamin D in blood. The authors concluded that women with a higher concentration of vitamin D in their blood had a lower risk for breast cancer compared with women who didn’t have these higher levels.“Participants with blood levels of 25 (OH)D that were above 60 ng/ml had one-fifth the risk… compared to those with less than 20 ng/ml,” Cedric Garland, principal investigator and co-author, said in a press release.Vitamin D is vital to your overall health. It helps muscles move, lets nerves carry signals, and helps your immune system ward off disease.“We know vitamin D keeps bones strong and it has an important role in normal cell growth,” Dr.Marissa Weiss, chief medical officer and founder of Breastcancer.org, told Healthline.Weiss also practices at Lankenau Medical Center in Pennsylvania and serves as the director of breast radiation oncology and breast health outreach. The current recommended daily allowance of vitamin D for people ages 1 to 70 is 600 International Units (IU).This includes pregnant women. From birth to 12 months, it’s 400 IU.Adults over the age of 70 should have 800 IU.There are two main ways for people to get enough vita

Nature Crazy’s Top 6 Tips For Preventing Cancer

06:45
Emerging scientific evidence has shown that cancer can be prevented. In today’s video Nature Crazy goes over its top 6 tips for preventing cancer while keeping your health intact. 1. Supplement with alpha lipoic acid and ecklonia cava on a regular basis. PHD German Otto Warburg, the 1931 Nobel laureate in medicine, was the first one to recognize that cancer cells have a unique energy metabolism in comparison to normal functioning cells. His premise affirmed that cancerous tumors generally display a boost in "anaerobic glycolysis," which means glucose is used as energy by cancer cells with lactic acid as an anaerobic consequence in comparison to normal cells. Using Alpha lipoic acid and ecklonia cava daily can both help improve insulin regulation. We recommend a high-quality brand. https://iherb.co/3GRzYwp2 https://iherb.co/RrFvGpT 2. We recommend supplementing with Vitamin D on a regular basis since optimizing vitamin D levels between 50 and 80 ng/ML will help prevent many types of cancers all by itself. A four year double blind study conducted at the Creighton University School of Medicine in Nebraska has revealed that supplementing with vitamin D and calcium can greatly reduce your risk of cancer. We recommend 6,000 ius a day. https://iherb.co/3SLv6UHQ 3. Consider supplementing with unrefined unprocessed healthy Omega-6 oils daily because research has shown that Omega 6 fatty acids increase oxygen transfer in cells. This is vital to cancer prevention when you consider that low oxygen in cells is highly characteristic of cancer cells. This is because poor oxygen in the cell compromises the cellular oxygen respiration mechanism and its ability to make energy aerobically using oxygen. Here’s an analogy. When lifting weights your arms build up lactic acid from the fermentation process and burn, and you stop lifting. Then your cells recover and produce energy using oxygen. However, the problem happens when your cells cannot produce energy using oxygen anymore because of the damage to the respiratory enzymes in your cells. As a result, they must produce energy primarily by fermentation and this is what can cause a cell to turn cancerous. One can take preventative measures by raising the oxygen transfer in tissue by consuming unrefined unprocessed healthy omega 6 fatty acids. We recommend either unrefined pumpkin seed oil, borage oil, or raw organic nuts and seeds. https://iherb.co/5vv6cQhv 4. Consider supplementing with EGCG daily. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate also known as (EGCG), is the principal polyphenol found in green tea, and has been shown to inhibit the growth of many cancer cell lines and to repress the phosphorylation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) which plays a role in a variety of human carcinomas. By doing this, EGCG stops cancer cells from quickly progressing and advancing from one location in the body to another. There is also evidence that suggests regular intake of green tea may even reduce the risk of smokers developing lung cancer and although further long term studies are needed to confirm it has been speculated that the low lung cancer rate in Japan – despite the high rate of smoking is due to green tea consumption which of course contains EGCG. We recommend using a high quality brand daily. https://iherb.co/4McJgVAE 5. Consider supplementing with Iodine since the protective effects of iodine on certain cancers have been postulated from epidemiologic evidence and described in animal models. There is also considerable evidence that an iodine shortage in the body is an adjustable risk factor in cancers of the stomach and breast and possibly many other organs. For example, when breast tissue cells don’t contain enough iodine, they are more likely to be abnormal, precancerous, or cancerous. Additionally, Iodine is a critical element for healthy thyroid hormone production and since cancer occurs during a low thyroid state supplementing with Iodine and its co factors will help guard against it. We recommend working up to 5 drops daily. https://iherb.co/2xuCgemT 6. Consider supplementing with curcumin regularly since studies have shown that it helps prevent several forms of cancer including breast, lung, stomach, liver, and colon. This is due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that interferes with the cellular signaling aspects of disease. We recommend a quality brand daily. https://iherb.co/3PCmSUMp Other helpful links: 1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wezl6XIPYE&t=204s 2. https://www.cancertutor.com/ [1] https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26417363 [2] https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17556697 [3] http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27566205 [4] https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27869750 [5] http://www.medsci.org/v05p0189 [6] https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Siqing+Fu++curcumin http://www.naturecrazy.com/disclaimers

*Note* Because of many distractions I have taken my website down. And I'm sorry but I can no longer answer questions. However, I have left this channel up because it has helped a lot of people. Also, I continue to get asked what far infrared sauna I recommend. It's the same sauna I use in my own home. Go here: http://vitalhealthsaunas.com. Their saunas are even better now then they were before. They are the most advanced full spectrum and far infrared saunas on the market today. 21 interesting facts about the infrared sauna: Test your knowledge and see how many you know... NASA began utilizing FAR infrared heat (the same used in high-quality saunas) in the 1980's as an effective way to maintain fitness levels and cardiovascular conditioning for astronauts during long space flights - An easy way to think of the home infrared sauna is that it provides all the healthy benefits of natural sunlight without any of the dangerous effects of solar radiation - Depression or feeling "blue" is often directly associated with having inadequate amounts of far natural heat - Using an infrared dry sauna in the early stages of a cold or flu has been known to stop the virus dead in its tracks - It will cost you less than $5.50 a month to run a 2-person for 1 hour - 7 days a week. Really good carbon fiber heaters reach temperatures over 100 degrees in just 10-15 minutes... While traditional saunas can take 45 minutes to 1 hour - Your body sends and receives far infrared waves at the range of 6 to 20 microns. The optimal micron output range that is safest and most vital to your heal and healing is between 7 and 14. The more closely your heating panels match this optimal range the more your body will absorb the health and healing far infrared waves... The really good saunas will help you absorb close to 93% - European beauty specialists routinely incorporate daily infra red sauna sessions to help their patients clear the gel-like lumps of fat, water and debris trapped in pockets beneath the skin -- also known as cellulite - A sauna infrared session can eliminate Not 1 -- Not 2 -- but 7 times the amount of harmful toxins than 1 solid hour of strenuous exercise - Far infrared radiation is believed to be the only antidote to combat excessive ultraviolet radiation - Infra-red means "below-red" -- ultraviolet (UV) means "above-violet". Both of these are part of the sun's invisible spectrum. Though they are not visible to us they have very different affects on our body. Ultraviolet light has been proven to cause many major illnesses - while infrared light is found on the exact opposite end of the light spectrum and has been proven to carry many healthy benefits - Hospitals use infrared heaters to keep premature babies warm in incubators - The air you breathe in the infrared sauna is 50 to 100 degrees cooler than a conventional sauna that relies on indirect means of heat - instead of heating you directly - Do you know what your largest organ is? It's your skin. And, sweating through your pores produced by the infrared sauna contains approximately 20% toxins - compared to a measly 3% produced by a traditional (Finnish) sauna - 800 + fire-fighters that were poisoned at the World Trade Center 911 disaster site, have been successfully detoxified through an infrared heat program in New York City - The first indication of this beneficial technology was developed in 1965, by Dr. Tadashi Ishikawa who was a member of the Research and Development Department of Fuji Medical - Research conducted at the Creighton University School of Medicine in Nebraska revealed vitamin D can reduce your risk of getting breast cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer and other forms of cancer by at least 60 percent. The best parts of natural sunlight help us produce adequate amounts of vitamin D. Since we are taking the most beneficial parts of natural sunlight and bottling them up... you could conclude the Infrared Sauna will further help with this - Research from the Journal of American Medical Association states - Sweating during a sauna session is the equivalent to running 2-3 miles. Making it perhaps the only natural - healthy way to lose weight and burn calories without exercising - I believe the best is the "cedar infrared sauna." The wood is elegant - it has the ability to kill mold and bacteria - it won't split or crack - it doesn't lose its color - and no two saunas ever look exactly the same - Average cost for an infra red sauna session at a spa is 1 dollar a minute (30 dollars for 30 minutes). If you were to use it just 3 times per week that's $360.00 per month. $4320.00 per year. You could buy two - 2-person high-quality saunas for that price and still have around 300 dollars to spare - The most trusted infrared sauna companies hold 4 different certifications. To get certified is not that easy which is why the vast majority don't have them - I hope you found my infrared sauna video helpful!

Vitamin D

06:03
Using new technology, researchers were able to determine that the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin D intake is estimated to be 400 International Units (IU) per day rather than 800 IU. The findings of this study were presented at ENDO 2017 in Orlando, FL. "In estimating the RDA for vitamin D intake, the laboratory method used for measuring 25-hydroxyvitmain D (25[OH]D) can affect the results," said principal investigator J. Christopher Gallagher, M.D., professor and director of the Bone Metabolism Unit in the Division of Endocrinology of Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Neb. "The estimated RDA based on the older immunoassay (DiaSorin S.p.A., Salugia, Italy) system was 800 IU daily, whereas the newer liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technique estimated that 400 IU daily would meet the RDA." To investigate this difference, the researchers looked at an earlier, double-blind, dose-response trial (n=163) in healthy postmenopausal Caucasian women aged 57–90 years with vitamin D insufficiency (serum 25[OH]D ≤20ng/mL) in the winter and spring of 2007–2008. The women were randomized to one of seven vitamin D3 doses: 400, 800, 1600, 2400, 3200, 4000, 4800 IU/day or placebo for one year and were also given calcium supplements. Analysis of the samples using the older immunoassay method found that 800 IU daily would meet the vitamin D requirement in 97.5% of the population. However, when the samples were re-analyzed with the newer LC-MS/MS method, the researchers established a more precise RDA for vitamin D to be 400 IU daily. Dr. Gallagher concluded, "This has important ramifications for public health recommendations. The amount of vitamin D needed, 400 IU daily, is less than the figure recommended by Institute of Medicine." The authors cautioned this RDA value was for bone health only and requirements may differ for other conditions. There is no conclusive data on this as trials evaluating cancer, diabetes, and other conditions are ongoing. http://www.empr.com/news/vitamin-d3-recommended-dietary-allowance-rda-intake/article/648138/

The Science Behind the Sodium Intake Guidelines

10:20
After years of hearing that we need to lower our sodium intake and eat less salt, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has reported findings that suggest there is no benefit to reducing intake to the very low levels currently recommended in national dietary guidelines. The current guidelines recommend people in high-risk groups limit sodium intake to 1500 milligrams a day. The IOM's findings, released today in the report Sodium Intake in Populations: Assessment of Evidence, suggest no benefit for anyone to aim for sodium levels less than 2300 milligrams a day. Robert P. Heaney, M.D., a clinical endocrinologist who specializes in nutrition and the John A. Creighton University Professor at Creighton University, has served on a previous IOM panel, which examined calcium and related nutrients. He did not contribute to this report, but has reviewed many of the studies used by the IOM to make its determination and believes the institute is moving in the right direction. Prostate Biopsy Alternatives

04:03
Doctors have relied on biopsies to determine if a patient has cancer. These procedures can be dangerous and have been fatal. Dr. Mark Scholz says new imaging studies, MRI and ultrasound, can eliminate the need for biopsies. These procedures have proven to be very accurate and are completely safe. Biopsies sometimes find tiny specks of low grade cancer that don't need to be treated. These new alternatives to prostate biopsy help doctors find the cancers that need to removed or destroyed. Dr. Scholz advises doing research to determine who can do these procedures properly. As with any new technology, some people are not doing these procedures properly. Prostate Oncology Specialists Inc. in Marina del Rey, CA, a medical practice exclusively focused on prostate cancer. He is also the executive director of the Prostate Cancer Research Institute He received his medical degree from Creighton University in Omaha, NE, Dr. Scholz completed his Internal Medicine internship and Medical Oncology fellowship at University of Southern California Medical Center. Shades of Prostate Cancer

03:28
There are many types of prostate cancer out there, which can lead to confusion. Dr. Mark Scholz tells us that in order to make sense of it all the Prostate Cancer Research Institute has divided the different types into the five shades of prostate cancer. The acronym STAIR is used to remember the colors which are, sky blue, teal, azure, indigo, and royal blue. Sky blue, teal, and azure are used for low, intermediate, and high risk prostate cancer, respectively. Those with low grade cancer may opt for active surveillance and those with higher grades may need an aggressive treatment plan. Indigo is for men that have been through treatment and their PSA is rising, which is usually an indicator of recurrence. Royal blue is for patients with advanced prostate cancer, which means the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. A board-certified medical oncologist, Mark C. Scholz, MD, serves as medical director of Prostate Oncology Specialists Inc. in Marina del Rey, CA, a medical practice exclusively focused on prostate cancer. He is also the executive director of the Prostate Cancer Research Institute He received his medical degree from Creighton University in Omaha, NE, Dr. Scholz completed his Internal Medicine internship and Medical Oncology fellowship at University of Southern California Medical Center. One of the studies show that most people are very low and two is that it’s very correctable. It’s related to a number of health conditions—cancer, heart disease, depression, chronic pain, bone health, diabetes and on and on. It’s just incredible with all the factors involved. We were designed to make it and we have been for a long, long time—a couple of million years. The reality is that we just have to be proactive. Our environment is causing issues that have been defined as an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency because we don’t live like we lived fifty or a hundred years ago. We work inside. We live inside and if we go outside we wear sunscreen.
