London (CNN)Vitamin D supplements do not improve bone mineral density or prevent fractures or falls in adults, finds a large study that advises health professionals to stop recommending the supplements to most patients. The vitamin has long been associated with a decreased risk of a number of conditions, such as osteoporosis and hypertension, in addition to keeping bones strong by helping the body absorb calcium -- which is why many use it during the dark winter months. But the study's authors say there is "little justification" in doing so when it comes to bone health. "Our meta-analysis finds that vitamin D does not prevent fractures, falls or improve bone mineral density, whether at high or low dose," lead author Dr. Mark J. Bolland, associate professor at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, said in a statement.The findings add to previous research suggesting that vitamin D supplements do not prevent disease for the majority.Read MoreThe research, published in the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, analyzed data from 81 randomized controlled trials -- involving more than 53,000 people -- that studied whether the over-the-counter supplement helped in fractures, falls and bone density. A recent study concluded that increased levels of Vitamin D may reduce the risk of breast cancer. Of the more than 5500 women over age 55 that participated, those that had higher Vitamin D levels of 60 nanograms per milliliter in their blood levels had an 80% lower risk for breast cancer. Anew study on the association between vitamin D and the reduced risk of breast cancer suggests that higher concentrations of the micronutrients may be a factor.Research on the role of vitamin D and its influence on breast cancer isn’t new.Data has shown that women with low levels of the vitamin are at higher risk for developing the cancer.But there isn’t enough evidence yet to directly link high levels of vitamin D to a decreased risk for breast cancer.This new study, conducted by researchers at the University of California San Diego in collaboration with Creighton University, Medical University of South Carolina, and Grassroots Health, may shed some new light on relationship between the two.Dr.Scott Christensen, professor of hematology and oncology at University of California Davis and medical director at the U.C.Davis Cancer Care Network, told Healthline he was cautiously optimistic about the study.He likened it to an “informational advancement” on the role of vitamin D in relation to the development of breast cancer.“We’ve gone from [thinking] vitamin D may help to maybe now there are different levels that can help,” he said.“It certainly raises some very provocative questions about the role of vitamin D.” The findings are based on a meta-analysis of previously conducted clinical trials.One of the studies involved more than 3,300 participants and the other had more than 1,700 participants.The studies were conducted between 2002 and 2017.All participants were women over the age of 55 and cancer-free at the time of enrollment.During the trials they were given both vitamin D and calcium supplements and were followed for a mean period of four years.The crux of the study is the concentration of vitamin D found within blood.Researchers referred to it as serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, or 25(OH)D, which is the main marker of vitamin D in blood.The authors concluded that women with a higher concentration of vitamin D in their blood had a lower risk for breast cancer compared with women who didn’t have these higher levels.“Participants with blood levels of 25 (OH)D that were above 60 ng/ml had one-fifth the risk… compared to those with less than 20 ng/ml,” Cedric Garland, principal investigator and co-author, said in a press release.Vitamin D is vital to your overall health.It helps muscles move, lets nerves carry signals, and helps your immune system ward off disease.“We know vitamin D keeps bones strong and it has an important role in normal cell growth,” Dr.Marissa Weiss, chief medical officer and founder of Breastcancer.org, told Healthline.Weiss also practices at Lankenau Medical Center in Pennsylvania and serves as the director of breast radiation oncology and breast health outreach.The current recommended daily allowance of vitamin D for people ages 1 to 70 is 600 International Units (IU).This includes pregnant women.From birth to 12 months, it’s 400 IU.Adults over the age of 70 should have 800 IU.There are two main ways for people to get enough vita

Using new technology, researchers were able to determine that the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin D intake is estimated to be 400 International Units (IU) per day rather than 800 IU. The findings of this study were presented at ENDO 2017 in Orlando, FL. "The estimated RDA based on the older immunoassay (DiaSorin S.p.A., Salugia, Italy) system was 800 IU daily, whereas the newer liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technique estimated that 400 IU daily would meet the RDA." To investigate this difference, the researchers looked at an earlier, double-blind, dose-response trial (n=163) in healthy postmenopausal Caucasian women aged 57–90 years with vitamin D insufficiency (serum 25[OH]D ≤20ng/mL) in the winter and spring of 2007–2008. The women were randomized to one of seven vitamin D3 doses: 400, 800, 1600, 2400, 3200, 4000, 4800 IU/day or placebo for one year and were also given calcium supplements. Analysis of the samples using the older immunoassay method found that 800 IU daily would meet the vitamin D requirement in 97.5% of the population. However, when the samples were re-analyzed with the newer LC-MS/MS method, the researchers established a more precise RDA for vitamin D to be 400 IU daily. Dr. Gallagher concluded, "This has important ramifications for public health recommendations. The amount of vitamin D needed, 400 IU daily, is less than the figure recommended by Institute of Medicine." The authors cautioned this RDA value was for bone health only and requirements may differ for other conditions. After years of hearing that we need to lower our sodium intake and eat less salt, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has reported findings that suggest there is no benefit to reducing intake to the very low levels currently recommended in national dietary guidelines. The current guidelines recommend people in high-risk groups limit sodium intake to 1500 milligrams a day. The IOM's findings, released today in the report Sodium Intake in Populations: Assessment of Evidence, suggest no benefit for anyone to aim for sodium levels less than 2300 milligrams a day. Robert P. Heaney, M.D., a clinical endocrinologist who specializes in nutrition and the John A. Creighton University Professor at Creighton University, has served on a previous IOM panel, which examined calcium and related nutrients. He did not contribute to this report, but has reviewed many of the studies used by the IOM to make its determination and believes the institute is moving in the right direction. There are many types of prostate cancer out there, which can lead to confusion. Dr. Mark Scholz tells us that in order to make sense of it all the Prostate Cancer Research Institute has divided the different types into the five shades of prostate cancer. The acronym STAIR is used to remember the colors which are, sky blue, teal, azure, indigo, and royal blue. Sky blue, teal, and azure are used for low, intermediate, and high risk prostate cancer, respectively. Those with low grade cancer may opt for active surveillance and those with higher grades may need an aggressive treatment plan. Indigo is for men that have been through treatment and their PSA is rising, which is usually an indicator of recurrence. Royal blue is for patients with advanced prostate cancer, which means the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. A board-certified medical oncologist, Mark C.
