To support community college counselors and administrators supporting these students, REL West hosted events featuring experts from community colleges around the state. Participants learned about innovative and promising counseling programs that support student education planning. In this video, they talk about what they learned from the event. In this video, we are going to review important college admissions strategies you can use to help you get into the college of your choice. Specifically, we are going to discuss the top five factors admissions officers look for when choosing whom to accept for their next entering class. 00:34 -- College Admissions Strategy #1 02:11 -- College Admissions Strategy #2 02:57 -- College Admissions Strategy #3 03:59 -- College Admissions Strategy #4 05:08 -- College Admissions Strategy #5 Strategy #1 for College Admissions The first important strategy when applying to college is to have strong numbers. This means 1) having a high GPA, and 2) taking a competitive course load, and 3) earning a solid SAT or ACT score. This area is the most important part of your college application. Strategy #2 for College Admissions The second important factor when applying for college is the admissions essay. The admissions essay is your opportunity to go beyond the numbers and share with the admissions committee more about who you are including your interests, passions, and experiences. There are many different types of admissions essays you may be required to write. What is important to consider when writing your essay is to really understand each college you are applying to and how you believe you would fit in. More importantly, it's about showing the admissions committee how you can add value to the student body. This is your opportunity to share meaningful experiences, stories, challenges, and triumphs that have shaped who you are, and made you the person you are today. Remember, the college essay is your opportunity to give a "voice" to your application—so make it count! Strategy #3 for College Admissions The third important factor for being successful in the college admissions process is to show a "demonstrated interest" in the colleges you are applying to. Colleges want to know that you, as an applicant, understand what their college is about, and more importantly, that you understand how you would fit into their student body. Remember, colleges are not just accepting students into their entering class--they are accepting future alumni who will be a great representation for their college. Strategy #4 for College Admissions The fourth important factor when applying to college is to have strong counselor and teacher recommendations. Strategy #5 for College Admissions The fifth important factor when applying to college is your involvement in extracurricular activities. You don't need to get involved in a lot of extracurricular activities. Just pick two or three activities that really interest you. It is more important that you get a deeper involvement in the activities you are passionate about, that you take on leadership roles, and that you make a strong contribution. Overview: Follow these simple guidelines for success in the college admissions process. 1) Always earn the best grades you can while taking the strongest curriculum your school offers. Also, score as high as possible on the SAT or ACT 2) Bring a voice to your application through your admissions essays 3) Make sure you understand the colleges you are applying to and how you would be a great fit 4) Get to know both your counselor and teachers well so that they can be a positive reference 5) Get involved with a small number of extracurricular activities that you are passionate about, and contribute as much as you can. ---------------------------------------------------------- For further information about college planning and student success, visit: TheHaigTwins.com.

TRANSCRIPT: I'm on the campus today of the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, just south of Miami. Beautiful campus, you can see behind me this nice lake, most of the buildings are centered around this lake, and there's another big quad not too far from here. Delightful campus, about 10,000 students. I had a great tour with a tour guide from Florida, from not too far away, and sort of thinking about admissions. This is a top ranked university in the United States and some kids can do well by taking strategies for admission that are a little bit, shall we say, unorthodox. So I don't think he did this on purpose, but it got me thinking, he is a dual major in music and economics. But when he decided to come to the University of Miami to apply, he applied as a music major because they have a music school and he's a violist, and very interested in music. So he decided that he would apply for music so he did an audition, did very well, and ended up getting a full-ride, full-tuition scholarship to the University of Miami. They have financial aid but a full-tuition scholarship? That's pretty amazing. And obviously, he was quite smart too, he graduated valedictorian of his class, but he used that academic as well as the extracurricular activity talent that he had, putting them together to make for a really sweet package. He presented himself in a way that certainly the University of Miami saw was fantastic. They really wanted him so they gave him the incentive to come to this university over the University of Chicago and Cornell University, Ivy League. So he got a sweet deal and he knows that if he wants to go to graduate school, all that money he would have spent at Cornell, he can use that for his graduate education. And yes, if he got into the Ivy League once he probably can get in the Ivy League again. So very good strategy for not only his undergraduate education at a cheap price, but thinking of his education as a long-term objective, that he can use that money and save it for a very expensive graduate school in business, or I think he's interested in law, for which there really is no scholarship. So he saved that money, he can pay for his undergraduate free, and he can pay for law school with the money that he saved. So sometimes it pays to think strategically about how you want your entire education to fall out and to make decisions accordingly. This kid made a great choice, he's very happy here, he was smiling the entire time during his tour, he's just really happy with his decisions. So think about that as you're trying to decide what is the right strategy for you as you think of your long-term educational future.

Transcript (verbatim) of Training Heathcare Professionals to Counsel Patients on Advance Care Planning: Hello, I’m Dr. Stanley Terman. I am a board-certified psychiatrist and bioethicist and I also train people (healthcare professionals) to counsel patients on Advance Care Planning. Our society needs an army of Advance Care Planning counselors to handle the escalating dementia epidemic; and in general, so that people can have a peaceful and timely final transition. Caring Advocates offers a training program for health care professionals and it has three parts: Part I is experiential and didactic. First, the trainee completes Strategic Advance Care Planning for him/herself, going through the same process as a patient would to complete a Natural Dying—Living Will and the accompanying several documents that are strategic, clinical, and legal — to get the job done. Then s/he uploads all forms and videos to a national registry. The goal is to make sure that future physicians and others can learn, and then will honor, these advance treatment decisions. Trainees will also read, and view videos and then discuss and write about source materials, including books, articles, and videos. In Part II, the trainee first observes a trainer guide a capacitated patient to complete Strategic Advance Care Planning. Then, with another patient, the trainer observes the trainee as s/he guides Advance Care Planning through counseling. In Part III, the trainee observes a trainer facilitate several family members of an incapacitated patient as they strive to reach a Consensus of Substituted Judgment. Then the trainer observes the trainee as s/he facilitates members of another family through Now Care Planning. Certification requires observing successful counseling and the passing of written and oral exams. Trainees may train at a distance in any American state using InterviewByInternet.com. This is an interactive video program that is secure, private, and HIPAA-compliant. Trainees may bill for the counseling they provide their patients and family members if they are credentialed by the patients’ health insurance company, or if they are qualified to be a Medicare provider—even if they are not enrolled (in Medicare). After completing their training, Caring Advocates Certified Planning Professionals may remain affiliated with Caring Advocates for updates and further support. For example, they can receive second opinions regarding their patient’s current situation and also advice on how to motivate reluctant healthcare providers to comply with the wishes of the patient or family. Call 800 DrTerman or email DrTerman@gmail.com to receive more information and/or to arrange either an in-person or video interview.

Members of the Edinburgh Integration Joint Board talk about the benefits and aspirations of the Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership. More information: http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/transformedinburgh/ VIDEO TRANSCRIPT Rob McCulloch-Graham, Chief Officer of Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership "This is a very important day for us. The Integration Joint Board has just signed the strategic commissioning plan for the Health and Social Care Partnership here in Edinburgh. "We have the best staff working in social care and in health in the city and they do outstanding work for the population within the city here, the capital of Scotland. And what we have to face up to however is that our population is increasing and people are living longer. So we have more people to look after. We’ve got more complicated cases that need our help, both in social care and in health." George Walker, Chair of Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership "Well my hope for the services in Edinburgh post integration is that they can really make a difference for the people of Edinburgh and actually really improve the health and social care outcomes for the population of Edinburgh. "In particular, that we can do more in a much more joined up way right across the spectrum of health. Whether that be your GP or social care and social support. They are the most important things that I’d like to see our services deliver." Councillor Ricky Henderson, Vice Chair of Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership (title on film to be amended) "Well I think integration is an opportunity for us to work more collaboratively across different organisations, different boundaries, but also uniquely to forge better partnerships with communities and with the voluntary sector. "Much of the emphasis through integration will be to shift the balance of care to try to make communities more resilient and to promote the prevention agenda. And I think integration gives us that possibility. And we’ll need to work more closely with communities in terms of achieving the good outcomes that everybody wants to see." Ella Simpson, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Voluntary Organisations Council "What we as a third sector feel is that we’re really close to the people, the citizens of Edinburgh. "It means that the third sector should be, can be and will be recognised as absolutely integral to how health and wellbeing is seen in the city of Edinburgh. "We bring a lot of skills, a lot of support, a lot of connections and different ways of doing pieces of work. And to have that kind of approach recognised - that move finally from solely medical to that medical, social and integrated into your wider community approach - that is absolutely vital."

The problem with business plan coaching retreats (and what to do about it) In this video, I cover: *The Problem With “Touchy-Feely” Corporate Retreats (and what to do about it) *why big companies hire me to run corporate strategic planning retreats *Why most of these companies are wasting their time and money on retreats. *Potential problems with these corporate planning retreats *Why you must PRIORITIZE all those ideas, actions, goals, and directives that organizations brainstorm *90% of the value that my big corporate client is paying for in a planning retreat MORE DETAIL: Last year, I was hired to run a strategic planning retreat for an organization I’m coaching. Fast forward to 1 YEAR LATER… They hired me again, for 20% more money, to do the SAME THING this year. I just posted a video on the second step of the process I used to help them create their strategic plan… you can check it out HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moG8BSmMJtg Why did they hire me AGAIN? Because businesses never run out of problems, challenges, goals, and hunger for growth. All of that stuff requires a good plan. That’s why lots of companies are hiring coaches and consultants to run retreats for them. But... Most of these companies are wasting their time and money. Let me explain... I’m sure you’ve seen ‘corporate retreats’ where they get the team together and get the whole organization brainstorming ideas… very inclusive. These brainstorms usually include: *LOTS of sticky-notes *giant white boards *37 flip charts *role-playing / rah-rah / motivational exercises The group gets really excited about one or two “darling ideas” they came up with, and the team is yelping about how great it’ll be when that idea gets done. Sounds great, so far, no? Here are the potential problems… *How did they figure out that the idea they’re championing is the ONE BIG IDEA that will help them the most? *What if that idea turns out to be a loser? *What if the BEST idea got lost in the shuffle and now it’s on the “cutting room floor”? *What if the LOUDEST voice in the room took over rather than the SMARTEST or BEST voice? Chances are, one of those potential problems has just become a REALITY. And there’s one ‘problem to rule them all’ that causes all of these: ‘Group think’ has taken over. And, as a result… The PRIORITIES got lost. The fact is, that most ‘corporate brainstorming’ retreats... ...are just a high-end, foo-foo form of “Mob rule”. Mobs don’t make smart decisions. What a waste of money, time, effort, and GOOD IDEAS. The fact is, not all ideas are created equal, and during a strategic planning process, your client (or your company) must PRIORITIZE all those ideas, actions, goals, and directives that the organization brainstormed. Only when the most intelligent thinking strategically prioritizes these ideas, can there be any real value from the excitement in a retreat like this. THE POINT: Part of the ‘planning process’ must be to PRIORITIZE. When I run these retreats, I facilitate discovering and championing the PRIORITIES. It’s probably 90% of the value that my big corporate client is paying for. Check out the video about how I do it HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moG8BSmMJtg I also put together a one-page summary of the PRIORITIZATION step of the strategic planning process I use… you can download the PDF HERE: http://coachestrainingblog.com/becomeacoach/business-plan-coaching-help-clients-build-strategic-plan-step-two-prioritize/ I hope this helps... leave a comment with any questions or ideas. Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos and Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Susan R. Wente joined more than 500 students, faculty and staff to kick off the university’s campuswide campaign, “GO THERE: Break the silence. Break the stigma,” on Friday, Jan. 27, at the Student Life Center. The campaign’s aim is to create a campus culture in which community members can have brave dialogue and honest self-reflection in order to support their own mental health and well-being and that of their fellow students, faculty and staff. Representatives from the numerous mental health and well-being resources on campus were on hand to provide information and stress-relieving activities such as coloring books, desk yoga demonstrations and therapy dogs. Blair School of Music students played music at the event, and attendees also were able to talk with and submit suggestions to the co-chairs of the Chancellor’s Strategic Planning Committee on Mental Health and Wellbeing. The committee is conducting a comprehensive review of existing campus resources and programs and will make recommendations on needed changes – with particular emphasis on reducing stigma around support-seeking within the campus community. The committee plans future opportunities for campus community members to offer feedback as the committee develops its report for the chancellor. For more information about mental health and well-being resources, visit the university’s mental health and well-being website.
