A study published in the June 2014 issue of the Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine disclosed that in 28% of the cases when St. John's Wort was used there was the potential for harmful combinations when combined with pharmaceutical drugs. Apparently SJW induces accelerated detoxification of the same pathways in the liver as are used by birth control pills, Coumadin, many chemotherapies, and blood pressure medications. This would lower serum levels of these drugs and lead to potentially less pharmacological effect and lessened effectiveness for these drugs. This information is important and should be considered in clinical practice. In fact, we should be aware of the effects of all supplements and herbs when they are combined with drugs or for that matter, with other supplements and herbs as well. The place where this kind of thinking is most important is when combining different pharmaceutical drugs! We have almost no data on this, yet we continue to boldly mix and match different drugs routinely in conventional medical practice. There is a clear double standard that favors pharmaceutical usage.

Before you decide to take a dietary supplement, ask yourself: Do I need this supplement? Do I know that this supplement is safe? Does this supplement interact with any drug or food I am consuming? Do I know that this supplement works? Do I know enough about this supplement? ALWAYS LOOK FOR SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY, DOSAGE AND QUALITY OF THE DIETARY SUPPLEMENT!!! Be sure to remember that taking too much of any supplement might be harmful: taking high-concentration green tea supplements can be toxic to the liver; Taking too much selenium and vitamin E may increase the risk for prostate cancer…. Interactions with other medications. Some common negative interactions: Calcium can interact with heart medicine, certain diuretics, and aluminum and magnesium-containing antacids. Magnesium can interact with certain diuretics, some cancer drugs, and magnesium-containing antacids. Vitamin K can interact with blood thinners like Coumadin. St. John's Wort is known to adversely affect selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) drugs (i.e., anti-depressant drugs), blood pressure medication, and birth control pills. Coenzyme Q-10 can interact with anticoagulants, blood pressure medication, and chemotherapy drugs. Ginkgo biloba and vitamin E can increase the risk for internal bleeding when taken with aspirin or anitcoagulants such as warfarin. Ginseng can also increase the risk for internal bleeding when taken with anticoagulants or NSAIDs, and may cause side effects when taken with MAOI antidepressants. Echinacea can change how the body breaks down certain medications in the liver. Saw palmetto can interact with anticoagulants and NSAID pain relievers. Thank you so much for your kind attention! According to an article published in the April 2013 issue of the journal Internal Medicine, patients on SSRI antidepressants at the time of surgery have a 20% increased mortality, 9% increased risk for bleeding, and 22% increased risk for readmission within a month of discharge from the hospital! This was based on a review of 530,000 surgical patients from 2006-8. SSRIs such as Celexa, Lexapro, Prozac, Luvox, Paxil, and Zoloft, interfere with platelet function that can interfere with blood coagulation. Common side effects of SSRIs include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, insomnia, impotence, suicidal ideation, mania and much more. They interfere with the toxicity of Coumadin, digitalis, antiarrhythmic drugs, tricyclic antidepressants, triptans, benzodiazepines, and dilantin. SSRIs toxicity is increased by alcohol, diuretics, Sudafed, lithium, Meridia, Ambien, Tramadol, and St. Johns Wort. For a family of drugs that is no more effective for placebo for mild to moderate depression it should make you wonder why they are used most of the time! Just because herbs, vitamins and other phytonutrients are natural doesn’t mean you can take them without thinking about the consequences. You'll hear about a small sampling of the most commonly known problems, such as ephedra and St. John's wort. You'll also hear about green tea, avocado, grapefruit, chamomile, oregano, basil and some essential oils. Thank you for watching **Useful Information** * From providing a useful information channel. Are Blood Thinning Supplements Dangerous? It seems that lots of things that are good for you are also natural blood thinners. How do you know how much is too much? I recently cut myself and bled rather too much. Now I’m afraid of eating any food or taking supplements that can thin blood. You’re right, several supplements can increase the risk of bleeding through an anti-coagulant effect, but they rarely cause problems either alone or in combination. You’re unlikely to run into any problems with them unless you’re also taking blood thinning medications such as Coumadin, a drug prescribed to prevent the formation of clots that can block the flow of blood to the heart or brain and cause heart attacks and strokes. Supplements that have been associated with an anti-coagulant effect include St. John’s wort, coenzyme Q10, dong quai, feverfew, garlic and vitamin E. If you are on Coumadin, be sure to tell your physician about any supplements you are taking. If you wish to continue with them, take them regularly so that any necessary adjustments can be made when you take your regular lab tests. Normally, doctors perform these tests monthly on all patients taking Coumadin to make sure that their blood clotting time remains in the right range. In addition to the supplements listed above, omega-3 fatty acids make the blood less likely to form clots, which is one of the reasons why they’re so highly recommended for prevention of heart disease. You get omega-3s from eating oily fish such as salmon, sardines, and herring or taking fish oil supplements. My longstanding recommendation is to consume two to three servings of fish per week. The American Heart Association recommends eating at least two fish meals a week. Some foods, including garlic and onions, have anticoagulant effects, but here, too, neither is likely to cause bleeding problems. I doubt that any supplements or foods were responsible for the excessive bleeding you experienced. If it happens again, you might ask your physician to check your blood clotting time.

http://www.medpagetoday.com/MeetingCoverage/ACC/19036 ATLANTA -- Atrial fibrillation is both a major stroke risk and a looming public health problem since the risk of afib increases with age, and the standard treatment, warfarin, is often a clinical management challenge. But a number of investigational therapies suggest that a post-warfarin era is beginning. An example would be Wolfgang Sadee in pharmacology, who has developed the science behind the different genetic background that influences the way people metabolize the anticoagulant [Cumatin?], or Warfarin. And its now recommended on the basis of a lot of the work that hes done, if you take that medication, you should have your genes assessed to determine how you metabolize that medication, so you can avoid having a hemorrhage or you can avoid having a clot or a stroke. So theres an example of the bench to the bedside treatment thats making a difference.
