Take a step back in time and relive your favorite moments from the nest box on the 2017 WBU Barred Owl cam! Watch the owls deliver prey of all types as they work to raise three owlets to fledging. The three eggs hatched on April 6, 8, and 10. The Barred Owls sole focus for the next 4–5 weeks will be to provide enough food and warmth to their owlets as they grow old enough to venture into the wild beyond the nest box. Watch live at http://allaboutbirds.org/barredowls ******************************* Jim Carpenter, President and CEO of Wild Birds Unlimited, has hosted a camera-equipped owl box in his wooded backyard since 1999. Set more than 30 feet high against the trunk of a pignut hickory tree, this Barred Owl box was first occupied in 2006. Since then, the box has hosted several nests, including successful attempts since 2013. The camera system was updated in 2013 with an Axis P3364-LVE security camera and microphone mounted to the side of the box and connected to Jim’s house via 200 feet of ethernet cable. To keep predators like raccoons from investigating the nest, aluminum flashing was wrapped around the tree. An infrared illuminator in the box means you can keep track of the owls’ comings and goings throughout the night (don’t worry—the light is invisible to the owls). Since the birds aren’t banded, we can’t tell whether this is the same pair as in past years. Although male and female Barred Owls look alike in their plumage, females can be up to a third bigger than males. You can also tell the difference between them by watching their behavior; only the female incubates the eggs and chicks, but the male is responsible for the bulk of the feeding, ferrying prey items to the incubating female, and sharing them with her inside and outside of the box. For the second year in a row, the female laid her first egg on March 5; if all goes well, we can expect the owlets to start hatching between April 5 – 10. They’ll leave the nest four to five weeks after hatching. Learn more about Barred Owls in our AllAboutBirds Species Guide at https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/barred_owl/id.

In her TEDxMahtomedi presentation, “Building for the Birds”, Joanna talks about preventative measures that can be taken individually and within a community to prevent bird window collisions. Joanna Eckles has watched, studied, and worked with birds all her life. She received her bachelor’s degree in wildlife science at Cornell University and her master’s degree in conservation biology at the University of Minnesota. In 2006, she began working with Audubon Minnesota to study bird–window collisions and develop a program to address the problem, a significant source of bird mortality. Project BirdSafe is now a core part of Audubon Minnesota’s Bird-friendly Communities program. Joanna is also developing Bird City Minnesota, a municipal recognition program highlighting communities for the positive actions they take on behalf of birds. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

This movie shows a larch-clad residence by floating architecture specialists Baca Architects is raised above its flood-prone site in Oxfordshire on tiny stilts and an elevated deck (+ slideshow). Water Lane is the latest flood-resilient home from the London studio led by architects Richard Coutts and Robert Barker. The pair previously developed the UK's "first amphibious house" and a concept for prefabricated floating houses that they believe could be the answer to London's housing crisis. The property is set beside a brook in the historic village, which is recorded in the 1086 survey known as the Doomsday Book, so the architects had the dual task of developing a design that would compliment the area's traditional houses, while safeguarding it against potential flooding. The dwelling is made from four interlocking gabled volumes and elevated slightly above its site by a wooden deck and stilts. This arrangement is intended to allow water to flow below the property without causing damage, while during dry spells the house "appears to lightly float". "The site has a brook running along its edge and during high rainfall the site may flood," said the architects. "The house is raised above the flood level allowing water to convey underneath when the area floods." "The landscape is sculpted to accept encroaching water, adding water storage and acting as a gradual warning of the advancing floodwaters." The interlocking forms define four different areas of the house – a living room, dining space, kitchen and bedroom block. The Galápagos finches remain one of our world’s greatest examples of adaptive radiation. Watch as evolutionary biologists Rosemary and Peter Grant detail their 40-year project to painstakingly document the evolution of these famous finches. Their pioneering studies have revealed clues as to how 13 distinct finch species arose from a single ancestral population that migrated to the islands 2 million to 3 million years ago. Use this video as a supplementary resource for lesson plans centered on teaching evolution. The video expertly illustrates the effects of natural selection on Galápagos finch populations. Theme Music "Lindiggity" by DJ Come of Age http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/djcomeofage5 Notes: Sonambient (sônambēənt) = literally, the sounds of the immediate surroundings; the environment created by sounding sculptures. Harry Bertoia coined the word "Sonambient." Sonambient was the name of an album series in which Bertoia used his own sculptures as musical instruments for minimalist compositions. Read more at: http://www.harrybertoia.org/sonambient.html Text: Italian-born American artist Harry Bertoia designed the Diamond Chair for Knoll in 1952, and this single design elevated him to the pantheon of modern design. Later, his sculptural installations complemented the same buildings that housed his designs. From 1953 until his death in 1978, Bertoia focused his creative energies almost exclusively on sculpture. In his monumental work for the Standard Oil Building Chicago's tallest skyscraper until the Sears Tower was completed, designed by postwar modernist Edward Durrel Stone in 1974, his mission was to craft a sensual relationship between nature, architecture, and art. Now, Bertoia's sculptures, which are integral to the story of Chicago modern architecture, are the latest offering at Wright auction house. Richard Wright told me that "Bertoia's original design perfectly echoed the quality of Edward Durrell Stone's architecture, while adding movement and sound to the exterior plaza of the building." Working with some of the greatest architects of the 20th century, created large-scale sculptures in such prominent spaces as the General Motors Technical Center in Michigan, the chapel at MIT, and the International Airport in Virginia, all of which were designed by Eero Saarinen. For the Hanover Trust Company in New York, Bertoia created a seminal screen, which divided the public and private sides of the bank. Bertoia sought to create not just a dialogue between sculpture and architecture, but also to explore light, motion, and sound. He became internationally celebrated for his sculpture particularly after creating the landmark installation for Chicago's Standard Oil Building, now known as the Aon Center. To celebrate a dialogue with the waters of the lakefront tower, Bertoia composed a collection of eleven son-ambient, kinetic sculptures, which reflected the plaza pools with acoustic, geometric vitality. Bertoia's work uplifted the building into one of Chicago Loop's most beloved spaces, a jewel among four public installations; the other three were created by Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, and Marc Chagall. In 1994, the plaza of the Standard Oil Building was redesigned, and five of the sculptures were removed. Three of them are now offered at auction by Wright, while the other six remain, gracing the plaza, and attracting millions of visitors every year.

This video is from the third of 4 levels I digitally painted in Photoshop for the The Epic Tour: The Grateful Dead Game. The goal for this project was to create a game environment for the player that was like "playing in a painting," a place that someone would like to go hang out in. The four levels I created are centered around a performance at Cornell University on May 8, 1977. This concert was indeed Epic and many consider it to be the best concert of their entire career. Each song from this concert is illustrated throughout the levels. I do not play well so many thanks to my 7 and 10 year old boys for helping me out here!

Massacre along West Coast continues — Alarming, bleak situation as disease re-emerges — Hundreds of millions of sea stars estimated dead — Changes in cellular matrix observed, “a lot of interesting genes being found” — Other sea life disappearing as tidepool communities ‘shift’ Interview Jeff Rense & Yoichi Shimatsu Fukushima update can be found at http://rense.com on 9/14/2015 “Countless” dead birds reported in Pacific off US coast, nothing will eat the bodies — “There are no seals present” — Expert: “The fish are not there… all of them are starving” — Animals “acting weird, sick and weak, too weak to fly, too weak to run” — Resident: We want to know if it’s from Fukushima. National Geographic, Sep 15, 2015 Why Are So Many Starfish Dying? — Sea stars along North America’s west coast have been dying at an alarming rate. A syndrome known as sea star wasting disease causes the animal to lose limbs and eventually disintegrate, leaving behind a pile of white goo… National Geographic, Sep 15, 2015: The massacre of sea stars along the West Coast continues, although the pace has slowed because so many already have died… Some areas have seen up to a 90 percent decline in their populations… Scientists [are] investigating why this disease… is now rampaging through 19 species of sea stars… In some of the locations hit early on with this wasting disease, [Pete Raimondi, a marine ecologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz] and colleagues are already starting to see a shift in the animal community. In tidepools, where there used to be a mix of organisms including sea stars, scientists are now seeing mussels dominating… in the Pacific Northwest, sea stars have either gotten smaller in body size, or they are big, with few in the mid-size range, says Drew Harvell, a marine ecologist at Cornell University. National Geographic transcript, Sep 15, 2015: Ben Miner, marine biologist at Western Washington Univ.: “From Mexico all the way to Alaska, there’s been a massive die-off of sea stars. Estimates are in the tens to hundreds of millions of sea stars have died in the last couple of years. It’s one of the largest mortality events associated with a disease that we’ve ever observed in the ocean… Several years ago stars covered the bottom of the seas… we found less than 20 today. It’s just depressing.” UC Santa Cruz, Aug 18, 2015: From Washington down through central California… most of these sites show significant decreases in population size… indicating a high impact overall… Monitoring sites just north of Point Conception, at the southern end of central CA, tend to show higher prevalence of symptoms… The four Orange County monitoring sites in southern California turned up a total of four ochre stars, with two of the sites having zero ochre stars remaining in the monitoring plots… past total abundance for these sites would have averaged over 150 sea stars… In the Salish Sea/Puget Sound region of Washington… recent observations from citizen scientists indicate that the disease is re-emerging in some areas. A few sites with high numbers of juvenile ochre stars and mottled stars in winter 2014/spring 2015 have shown TV: Massacre along West Coast continues — Alarming, bleak situation as disease re-emerges — Hundreds of millions of sea stars estimated dead — Changes in cellular matrix observed, “a lot of interesting genes being found” — Other sea life disappearing as tidepool communities ‘shift’ (VIDEO) http://tinyurl.com/o2pqgg4
