Gestational Diabetes: Managing Risk During and After Pregnancy Video - Brigham and Women’s Hospital

07:08
Ellen Seely, MD, Director of Clinical Research in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension at Brigham and Women’s Hospital discusses the health risks associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during and after pregnancy. Dr. Seely also describes Balance After Baby, a web-based program designed to educate women on eating healthfully and increasing their physical activity, with the goal of helping them lose their pregnancy weight within a year of giving birth. GDM is a type of diabetes that occurs only in pregnancy. It comes on in the second half of pregnancy and it goes away after delivery. In the US it’s estimated that five percent of all pregnancies are complicated by GDM. The rates of GDM are higher in Hispanic and non-white populations, ranging from ten to 20 percent of all pregnancies. Obesity is one of the main risk factors for GDM. In the United States, most health centers screen all women for gestational diabetes because obesity is becoming so common in the overall population. Gestational diabetes can impact the health of the mother and the fetus, as well as the newborn. Women with GDM have an increased risk of preeclampsia, which is a type of high blood pressure that develops during pregnancy. Preeclampsia is a serious condition that can lead to early delivery. Women who have gestational diabetes may also have larger babies, increasing their risk of cesarean section. While GDM goes away after pregnancy, the health risks persist. Research has found that 50 to 70 percent of women who have gestational diabetes may develop Type 2 diabetes later in life. Research has also found that babies born to mothers with GDM, have a higher birth weight and may become obese during adolescence, increasing their risk of developing diabetes and other conditions such as high blood pressure. The Pregnancy and Diabetes Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital offers multidisciplinary care to women with GDM. The program includes a high risk obstetrician, two diabetes specialists, a nutritionist, and a nurse practitioner who is certified in diabetes education. The first approach to treatment is to control blood glucose levels with healthy eating and physical activity. Lifestyle changes, healthy eating and physical activity, are effective in controlling blood glucose levels about 75 percent of women with GDM. If the lifestyle changes don't work, insulin therapy is started to control a mother’s blood sugar for the rest of her pregnancy. Why is My Blood Sugar So High In The Morning

06:56
Get my prediabetes and diabetes type 2 management guide here to control your blood sugar better https://goo.gl/z7bR6y Morning blood sugar readings can sometimes be all over the place. Depending on what you had for dinner or what snacks you had during the evening. What time you took your medicine can play a factor as well. But if you have consistently high blood glucose readings every morning, it could be one of three reasons that we are going to discuss in this video. DAWN PHENOMENON Researchers feel the most common reason for high blood glucose levels in the morning is the dawn phenomenon. The glucose is going up from sources other than digested food. Some of it is produced by the liver from stored starch and fatty acids. Livers that produce too much glucose are one of the main ways diabetes causes high blood glucose levels. Other organs also produce small amounts of glucose. This is called “gluconeogenesis” for those of you who like the technical stuff. Organs produce glucose to keep blood glucose from going too low at night or other times of not eating. From about 2 AM to 8 AM, most people’s bodies produce hormones, including cortisol, glucagon, and epinephrine. All these hormones increase insulin resistance and tell the liver to make more glucose. The idea is to get you enough glucose to get out of bed and start the day. Everyone has a dawn phenomenon. Otherwise they’d be too weak to get breakfast. But in people without diabetes, insulin levels also increase to handle the extra glucose. People with diabetes can’t increase insulin levels that much, so their early morning blood glucose levels can rise dramatically. Experts disagree on how many people have a dawn phenomenon. Estimates range from 3% to 50% of Type 2s and from 25% to 50% of Type 1s. Is dawn phenomenon a serious problem? It can be serious. According to the American Diabetes Association, “Some people with dawn phenomenon find that their glucose continues to rise until they eat in the morning. For others, levels will settle down a few hours after waking, regardless of whether or not they eat.” According to columnist Wil Dubois, the higher your A1C, the more likely you are to have a significant dawn phenomenon. It could be that spending a number of hours each morning out of control is having a significant effect on your overall control. Some people have high glucose levels in the morning because their medicines wear off overnight. This could be true of medicines like insulin, and metformin. If you are taking any long-acting medicine, consider asking your doctor about changing meds, doses, or times THE SOMOGYI EFFECT In some cases, medicine can be too strong. If your glucose goes too low in the night, you could have a rebound high in the morning. This is called the Somogyi effect. If you are waking up high and are suffering pounding headaches, or find your sheets sweat-soaked, the odds are you are having lows in your sleep…You need to visit with your doctor about taking less meds. According to Dubois, the new insulins are much less likely to cause a Somogyi reaction. But because of cost, people are going back to NPH insulin. NPH is cheaper, shorter-acting, and more likely to cause a low, leading to a rebound high in the morning. WANING INSULIN If you take insulin and have been experiencing high blood sugar in the morning, your insulin may simply be wearing off too soon. If this is the case, your doctor can adjust your dosage or change what time you are taking the insulin to prevent high glucose levels. Pinpointing the Cause for Effective Treatment If your blood sugar is fairly even when you go to bed and at 3 a.m. but is higher in the morning, you are probably experiencing dawn phenomenon. If your blood sugar is low at 3 a.m., but high in the morning, you probably suffer from the Somogyi effect. If your blood sugar is elevated at 3 a.m. and then higher still in the morning, you probably have waning insulin. Even if you’ve identified the reason behind your high morning number, never attempt to correct it on your own. Instead, talk with your doctor. Together, you can find a treatment plan that gets you back on track in the morning. How can this situation be corrected? Once you and your doctor determine how your blood sugar levels are behaving at night, he or she can advise you about the changes you need to make to better control them. -Changing the time you take the long-acting insulin in the evening so that its peak action occurs when your blood sugars start rising -Changing the type of insulin you take in the evening -Taking extra insulin overnight -Eating a lighter breakfast -Increasing your morning dose of insulin -Switching to an insulin pump, which can be programmed to release additional insulin in the morning

How to Deal with Gestational Diabetes

02:08
Watch more How to Have a Healthy Pregnancy videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/223255-How-to-Deal-with-Gestational-Diabetes Approximately 4 percent of women are diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Here's how to manage it. Step 1: Know what gestational diabetes is. During pregnancy, increased hormone production requires more insulin to keep blood-sugar levels from getting too high. If the mother's pancreas is unable to make enough insulin to keep her blood sugar level normal, she becomes diabetic. Step 2: Follow the diet your doctor gives you. It likely will consist largely of high-fiber fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes; simple sugars and carbohydrates will be limited. The goal of the diet is to maintain a normal blood-sugar level. Tip Three small, well-spaced meals and three snacks will help keep your blood sugar on an even keel. Step 3: Exercise according to your obstetrician's guidelines. Experts say daily walking and swimming are especially good workouts for pregnant women. Step 4: If diet and exercise don't bring down your blood-sugar levels, your doctor may have you inject yourself with insulin or take an oral medication. Step 5: Keep on top of your condition by testing your blood sugar with a blood-glucose meter several times a day: When waking up in the morning; before each meal; and an hour or two after each meal. Call your doctor immediately if your blood-sugar level is high. Tip Acceptable blood sugar levels are 95 or less upon awakening; 140 or less an hour after meals; and 120 or less two hours after meals. Step 6: Return to your doctor six to 12 weeks after giving birth to have your blood sugar retested. For most women, their blood-sugar levels return to normal after they give birth. Step 7: Stick with your anti-diabetes diet and exercise plan so you won't become part of the approximately 50 percent of women who develop type 2 diabetes within five years of having gestational diabetes. Did You Know? Giving birth to a baby weighing more than nine pounds increases your risk of developing gestational diabetes during your next pregnancy.

What do I need to know about gestational diabetes?

03:06
All pregnant women should be screened for gestational diabetes around 28 weeks gestation. And it's important to test for this because if a woman has gestational diabetes or if she had previously diagnosed type 1 or type 2 diabetes, if uncontrolled, it can cause complications like preeclampsia, blood sugar problems for the baby after delivery, stillbirth, and an abnormally large baby, which has complications associated with that too. 5% to 18% of women develop gestational diabetes, and it all goes back to insulin resistance. Insulin is the key that unlocks your body's cells so that sugar can go inside and make the cells work. And your body naturally becomes a little more insulin-resistant during pregnancy so that there's enough sugar circulating in your blood so the baby gets what it needs. Normally, mothers can compensate for this by producing more insulin, but mothers who have gestational diabetes aren't able to make more insulin, and so blood sugar levels rise. So testing, like I said, for this is done are 28 weeks, and what will happen is the doctor will have you drink a very sugary drink. It contains 50 grams of glucose. And then they'll test your blood sugar an hour later and see how your body responded. If you get a value of 130 to 140, then you may have gestational diabetes, and the doctor will want to do a follow-up test. If the value you get on your first test is 200 or higher, then you just have gestational diabetes, but they may still want to do follow-up testing. And in both cases, it's doing a 3 hour glucose tolerance test. This is done when you're fasting, and then you drink double the amount of sugar. It's a 100 gram glucose sugar drink. And then they test your blood sugar every hour for 3 hours and see what it is. And then, based on those values, they determine if you truly have gestational diabetes or not. If the diagnosis is made, then there's a couple of different ways to manage it. And it's super important to keep your blood sugars under control so that you don't have the complications I discussed before. The management plan is going to be dependent on how severe your case is. And for a lot of women, it just involves some diet changes and exercise. For other women, it involves taking oral medication. And for about 15% of women with gestational diabetes, it has to be controlled with insulin. And you may start out just needing to make a few diet changes, and then as the pregnancy progresses, so do your body's needs, and so do your baby's needs, and so that may change the plan as well. So you could start out being diet-controlled, and then you may end up with oral medication or with insulin. So this speaks of the importance of consistent monitoring. A diabetic educator will meet with you and talk to you about your treatment plan and also tell you how often you should be monitoring your blood sugars. They'll take a peek at your values each week and, based on that, determine if additional changes in your treatment plan are necessary. Preventing Gestational Diabetes

01:52
From doctor’s appointments to blood tests, during pregnancy doctors make sure mothers are screened for anything that could cause health concerns to the mother and baby. “There is undiagnosed diabetes in the general population that gets picked up in pregnancy,” said Dr. Ravi Chokshi, an OB/GYN for Lee Health. But the problem can be treated with diet changes and medication, if necessary. “There’s a misconception that I’m pregnant; I’m allowed to eat as much as I want. I‘m eating for two, and that’s not really true. The American of Congress of OBGYN actually recommends you go up by 300 calories by your second and third trimester. Most of us already overeat by 200 and 300 calories a day,” he explained. Pregnant mothers are screened early to make sure their blood sugars are normal. “The recommendations are we screen at least everybody with a blood sugar very early in pregnancy. After that, we screen everybody after 24 weeks. The reason for that is the further pregnancy gets, the placenta gets bigger, and the hormones cause increased blood sugars,” said Dr. Chokshi. If a mother is diabetic during pregnancy, her blood sugars are uncontrolled—that blood sugar goes to the baby, causing the baby to create more insulin. “Babies are not only bigger; they grow differently. Their bellies are bigger than their heads. Their shoulders are bigger than their heads,” he said. Mothers who are diabetic during pregnancy are also at a higher risk of needing a C-section and developing diabetes later on in life. “If we can get your blood sugars in good control, studies show that you are going to have the same kind of pregnancy that non-diabetic moms have,” said Dr. Chokshi. Eating a healthy diet, avoiding processed foods, and eliminating sugar can help pregnant mothers keep their blood sugar under control. All to ensure a healthy pregnancy and delivery for both mom and baby. Symptoms of High Blood Sugar During Pregnancy

Symptoms of High Blood Sugar During Pregnancy At some point during your pregnancy, your obstetrician will hand over a small bottle of a sugary flavored drink and ask you to down it just before you come to your next appointment. Within about 60 minutes of taking the drink, you'll have a blood sample taken. This is the glucose screening test for gestational diabetes, or high blood sugar during pregnancy. Between two and 10 of every 100 pregnant women in the United States develop gestational diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly every pregnant woman under a doctor’s care will take this test because, in some cases, it won’t present visible symptoms. How to Keep Blood Sugar Levels Normal During Pregnancy

01:40
Do you know how to keep blood sugar levels normal during pregnancy? The ways of keeping blood sugar normal during pregnancy are the same used by diabetics in general. Control your weight or lose weight. Women with prenatal diabetes or at risk of it have to avoid gaining a lot of weight, but you shouldn't try to diet during pregnancy. What should I do to control the blood sugar? Don't eat foods laden with sugar. Eat unsweetened cereal and whole grain breads instead of white bread. That's almost as bad as the Atkins diet. You can eat all the lean meat and vegetables you want if it is totally cooked. Don't eat anything with high fructose corn syrup added. There's plenty of fruit juices I could have instead of soda. Many fruit juices have sugar added. Diet soda is an option, though the salt makes water retention worse, while sugar-free juice just doesn't taste as good. I have seen diabetic eat a lot of small meals and snacks. That helps them keep their blood sugar even instead of highs and lows from eating every six hours. Should I eat anything at night? You probably should eat something before you go to bed. However, to lessen the impact on blood sugar, it should be high in protein. Won't protein affect my blood sugar? It digests very slowly in the body, which is why high protein foods are good for diabetics. Or those who are at risk for diabetes. Correct. But you don't want to develop diabetes. Because I don't want insulin injections. Or the excessive thirst and frequent urination, in excess of what you already have to deal with as a pregnant woman. Or the risk of a ten pound baby. Oh, that's literally torture.

Yoga for Gestational Diabetes

03:44
Yoga can help with gestational diabetes by regulating hormones that affect blood sugar levels, cortisol and adrenaline levels, and emotional well being by stimulating the relaxation response in the body. Yoga also brings the practitioner into deeper awareness of her body so that she accurately monitors her energy level, blood sugar level, and appetite. In this video: Seated spinal circles: Practitioners will sit cross-legged with hands on the knees. Begin to rotate the torso in a big circle, using the arms to help guide the spine. Inhale as you flow forward, exhale as you round back. Close your eyes and listen deeply to your body and your breath as you flow in circles. Engage your abdominal muscles to the degree that it is comfortable and helpful with the movement. Switch directions after 10 cycles and rotate the other way for 10 cycles. Bharadvajasana: Practitioners will sit on the floor with both knees bent on the ground, both feet to one side. Inhale to sit tall, exhale to gently twist the opposite direction of the feet. Use the front hand on your knee to help twist, use the back hand on the floor for support in sitting tall. Breathe and gently twist, using your abdominal muscles as is comfortable and maintain a deep awareness on your body. Switch sides after 5 breaths. Practice these two poses daily, ideally before you’ve eaten. Caution: Be careful not to twist too deeply during pregnancy. Always be mindful of the body and use pain as your guide. Scientific research has found that mind-body practices such as yoga are very helpful in improving the health and wellness of pregnant women. By increasing physical activity, yoga can help prevent gestational diabetes, which is often a result of inactivity. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3424788/

GESTATIONAL DIABETES - Diet Plan By Dietitian Jyoti Chabria

01:51
BEST TIPS on GESTATIONAL DIABETES starting from diet plan, exercises & weight management. When you hear the word gestational diabetes I’m sure many of us would raise our eyebrows! Well, let me put it across in a simpler way. This type of diabetes is common in pregnant woman and remains only till the time of her delivery. After delivery the patient is considered no more a considered a diabetic. Some women are unfortunate when the gestational diabetes tends to stay on and goes not go away. This happens in very rare situations accompanied with other complications. Gestational diabetes during pregnancy is a temporary phase where the body goes through a number of changes. Did you know that gestational diabetes is also known as ‘Mellitis”? Let us have a brief look at what really causes diabetes in pregnant woman: Pregnant woman do not really need to worry about their blood sugar levels rising because it usually reaches normal levels during the course of time. I’m sure you all would want to know the reason for high sugar levels in pregnant woman! One major cause is the fact that the placenta produces more insulin than normally required by the body, and results in hormones getting blocked. Gestational diabetes occurs in women generally during the last semester of the pregnancy. The best way to make sure that you are not a diabetic is to get your blood sugar levels checked right after your delivery and regularly for the consecutive six months. A healthy diet for gestational diabetes is also very important to be followed. Pregnancy is one such phase in a women’s life which she always looks forward to. The period of pregnancy should be followed with some form of exercise for gestational diabetes. This would go a long way in making the pregnancy easier for the women. Risk factors for gestational diabetes: 1. Obesity: Women who are overweight are under a greater risk of getting gestational diabetes. Therefore it is important to keep a check on your weight during pregnancy. 2. High blood pressure: Pregnancy tends to increase the blood pressure levels in women. In order to avoid such a situation, it is always advisable to do some yoga or meditation to keep the mind calm. Some basic precautions to be taken during pregnancy are: Healthy diet plan:  It is important to follow a similar diet as a diabetic patient. Once the baby is born, the mother can go back to her normal eating habits since all the sugar parameters come back to normal levels. Food to be consumed by the patient is as follows- low fat skimmed milk, drumsticks, spinach, fenugreek etc.  Food that should be avoided is- Potatoes, beetroots, bananas, mangoes, grapes and custard apples. Exercising:  This is another way to maintain normal sugar levels in the body. Exercising like taking small walks or yoga can help you control the glucose levels in the body. A check on your weight: weight management is quite a task for many mothers to be! Controlling your weight can go a long way in keeping your sugar levels well under control. I hope this bit of information has been educational in some way to all of you! So remember gestational diabetes is just a temporary phase but can be problematic if you are not precautions. As the old saying goes ‘Precaution is better than cure’!  Jyoti Chabria is a Consultant Dietitian for many major hospitals, colleges and corporates in India. If I have gestational diabetes, how might it affect my baby, and will he be bigger than average?

02:36
Moms with diabetes, whether it be Type I, Type II, or gestational diabetes are more likely to cook large babies. It's because if your blood sugars aren't well controlled during your pregnancy you have a large amount of blood sugar circulating and this is getting to the baby as well. So they can grow extra large from having that extra sugar. It causes complications after delivery because their body is normal; they are producing insulin which is like a key that unlocks cells to put the blood sugar into the cell. Their body's response to this large amount of sugar is to produce a lot of insulin. This is great and what their body should do while they're inside of you. But once they're born and not getting all of that sugar, they still have a high level of insulin to compensate for that and it causes their blood sugar to rapidly drop. A lot of babies born to mothers with diabetes struggle with their own blood sugar after delivery. So the people who are taking care of your newborn will likely be in tune with this and be watching your newborn for signs of complications. But as for how big your baby is likely to be, who knows? It's hard to say. The chances of your baby being large are reduced by you controlling your blood sugars well during the pregnancy. So if your doctor has recommended a certain diet make sure you follow that and if your doctor has recommended medication to control your blood sugars, make sure you're taking that as prescribed and checking your blood sugars as frequently as your doctor has suggested as well. It's likely that in your third trimester you'll go to see some specialists that will watch you and the baby for signs of complications from diabetes. Usually your doctor will have you go to a specialist called a perinatologist to make sure that your baby is growing well and that the pregnancy overall is going well. They'll probably also have you talk with diabetic educators that will have you keep a log of your blood sugars and have you come in and discuss any complications or issues you're having with them. Your doctor is also likely to have you get frequent non-stress tests where you come in and they put your baby on the monitor, meaning they watch your baby's heart rate and your contraction pattern, for a short period of time to make sure your baby has enough oxygen and is doing well. If you have any other specific questions about your condition or about the things I've mentioned be sure to talk to your doctor and ask how they apply to you. But if you have any other questions for me feel free to ask them on our Facebook page and recommend us to your friends and family too.

Diabetes and Pregnancy Risks

01:52
It can be the happiest time of a woman’s life---but doctors say that joy can be overshadowed by a common medical condition. “It’s very common, unfortunately. As a society we are getting sicker, we are getting obese, and diabetes is on the rise,” said Dr. Ravi Chokshi, an OB/GYN with Lee Health. Diabetes becomes even more concerning when it’s developed during pregnancy. “There are two types of diabetes during pregnancy that we worry about. One is you’re a diabetic before you became pregnant, and that is a very serious problem that we try to get control of. The other is you’re not a diabetic. You had normal blood testing before. What happens in pregnancy is the placenta that the baby relies on releases hormones that increase your blood sugar,” said Dr. Chokshi. If the mother becomes diabetic during pregnancy, both the mother and baby are at risk for health concerns. “It actually affects the development of the baby, and it can cause heart defects and brain defects if the sugars aren’t brought under control quickly,” he said. These concerns are why doctors are screening women for diabetes throughout their pregnancy. “We are actually instituting a policy where almost every patient is going to get some blood sugar test at the start of pregnancy to make sure we’re not missing diabetics who didn’t know they were diabetic,” said Dr. Chokshi. If a woman is diabetic or becomes diabetic during pregnancy, doctors will help them with diet and medication, if necessary to get their blood sugar under control. “If you have diabetes during pregnancy and we don’t treat it adequately, you’re at a two to three time increased the risk for C-section; you’re at a three to four time increased risk for birth injury,” he explained. The goal is to catch diabetes early during pregnancy to prevent health concerns for both the mother and baby—both during and after delivery. Signs You Are Diabetic During Pregnancy

02:34
I want to know the signs you are diabetic during pregnancy. Bad results on the blood tests they do around the seventh month when you drink that nasty sugary drink are a sure sign. I’d like to know what to look for before that point. If you had gestational diabetes with the first kid, there’s a high risk of it the second go around. I know that you’re at risk for it if you have a family history of it, which I do. One of the signs of diabetes in any case is urine that smells sweet. It still smells bad to me. Then again, so does the meat aisle. Some of the signs of gestational diabetes are the same as standard diabetes, like increased thirst and urination. I’m already peeing for two, and dehydration is a common problem during pregnancy. Let’s just say, if you’re already drinking more water and it isn’t enough, you need to talk to a doctor. Increased thirst and drinking more may be a sign of a second trimester growth spurt and expanding blood vessels or being pregnant during the summer, so that isn’t enough for me to worry about it. Increased hunger can be a sign of prenatal diabetes. I’m eating for two. No, you’re at most eating for one point two, since the kid should not weigh more than ten pounds even at the end of the pregnancy. I do not know if ten pounds is healthy or unhealthy. You’re at risk for it if you had a baby over ten pounds, and having gestational diabetes increases the odds the baby you’re carrying will be a whopper. The difference between men’s fishing stories and women’s birth stories is that the women can guilt trip the kids with it while the guys only tell them between trips. If you have a spike in hunger and thirst while pregnant and it isn’t because you’ve been throwing up a lot, you should talk to the doctor about diabetes checks. What symptoms of diabetes during pregnancy should I look out for? Blurred vision. You can get that with preeclampsia and high blood pressure. That’s something you have to see the doctor about too, and in fact, preeclampsia is life threatening, so you have to get to a doctor if you have that symptom. So being hungrier, thirstier or bigger than normal when I’m already experiencing changes that make me hungry, tired, swollen and thirsty are symptoms. That’s why they do the blood tests. You’d think I’d be over the anxiety of blood tests, when I’m about to be peed on, pooped on and spit up on so much it will be cute.

Gestational Diabetes in Pregnancy and Secondary Diabetes Blood Sugar Levels

03:23
In this Video We Will Let you Know Gestational Diabetes in Pregnancy and Secondary Diabetes Blood Sugar Levels Gestational diabetes Diabetes can occur temporarily during pregnancy, and reports suggest that it occurs in 2% to 10% of all pregnancies. Significant hormonal changes during pregnancy can lead to blood sugar elevation in genetically predisposed individuals. Blood sugar elevation during pregnancy is called gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes usually resolves once the baby is born. However, 35% to 60% of women with gestational diabetes will eventually develop type 2 diabetes over the next 10 to 20 years, especially in those who require insulin during pregnancy and those who remain overweight after their delivery. Secondary diabetes "Secondary" diabetes refers to elevated blood sugar levels from another medical condition. Secondary diabetes may develop when the pancreatic tissue responsible for the production of insulin is destroyed by disease, such as chronic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas by toxins like excessive alcohol), trauma, or surgical removal of the pancreas. Hormonal disturbances Diabetes can also result from other hormonal disturbances, such as excessive growth hormone production (acromegaly) and Cushing's syndrome. In acromegaly, a pituitary gland tumor at the base of the brain causes excessive production of growth hormone, leading to hyperglycemia. In Cushing's syndrome, the adrenal glands produce an excess of cortisol, which promotes blood sugar elevation. Medications Certain medications may worsen diabetes control, or "unmask" latent diabetes. This is seen most commonly when steroid medications (such as prednisone) are taken and also with medications used in the treatment of HIV infection (AIDS).

How to keep sugar levels under control in pregnancy? - Dr. Poorni Narayanan

01:54
Today you have come to show me the sugar report that I had asked you to do last time. Remember last time that you have gestational diabetes, you still continue to have gestational diabetes, but I am very glad to tell you that your sugars are very well under control and you worked very hard to keep them under control with the diet as well as the exercise. You will have to continue the diet and exercise through the pregnancy to avoid having to start other medications for you to control the sugar, but your levels are very good today. You might ask me why it is so important to keep the sugar levels at a certain range throughout the pregnancy. If your sugar levels are not okay, the baby grows in an environment which is not very healthy. They tend to be very large. We all like large and chubby babies, but they are not healthy and during the delivery they may tend to have some injuries during the birth. You may end up with a ceasarian section which may not be necessary otherwise and after the delivery because the baby grows in an environment of high sugars, their sugars tend to drop which is called hypoglycemia. They also may have breathing difficulties for which they may require at specific neo natal care. So this is a good sign that you have controlled your sugars well, so the baby will continue to grow well and should not have all the problems that I just mentioned to you. So we will take you through the pregnancy with the diet and exercise without needing anything else.

Gestational diabetes only happens during pregnancy.During pregnancy, the placenta makes hormones that can lead to a buildup of sugar in your blood. Usually, your pancreas can make enough insulin to handle that. If not, your blood sugar levels will rise and can cause gestational diabetes. Enjoy And Stay Connected With Us!! Pregnancy and Diabetes

01:47
Food cravings during pregnancy can cause some drastic changes to your diet, but health experts say giving in too much to sugary desires can cause health problems for both mom and baby. While gaining weight is expected during pregnancy, Dr. Heitham Ajlouni, an endocrinologist for Lee Memorial Health System, says there are some risks for expecting mothers who gain too much weight. “Five to 15 percent of women who get pregnant develop gestational diabetes.” Gestational diabetes is one of the most common pregnancy complications. It causes high blood sugar, affecting the health of both mother and baby. “When women get pregnant they screen them for diabetes because pregnancy is a high risk for diabetes. We screen them with oral glucose tolerance test between 24 and 28 weeks because that’s the way we catch diabetes,” said Dr. Ajlouni. He says the screening is important because there are typically no symptoms from gestational diabetes. But there are signs that could mean the mother is at risk. If the mother is overweight, has high blood pressure, had gestational diabetes in other pregnancies, or if she has a primary family member with diabetes, she could be at risk for gestational diabetes. If a mother is diagnosed with gestational diabetes, health experts will monitor her blood sugar, weight, diet, and increase her exercise. They will also keep a close eye on the baby’s growth. “After delivery their sugar goes back to normal but after a couple of years 50 to 70 percent of those women will develop diabetes,” said Dr. Ajlouni. He says while the baby is not born diabetic, it is at risk for preterm delivery, low blood sugar and excessive birth weight, making it important to stay active and eat healthy during pregnancy. Gestational Diabetes, Symptoms, Causes

02:08
Here you can read about Gestational Diabetes, Symptoms and Causes etc. Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy (gestation). Like other types of diabetes, gestational diabetes affects how your cells use sugar (glucose). Gestational diabetes causes high blood sugar that can affect your pregnancy and your baby's health. Any pregnancy complication is concerning, but there's good news. Expectant moms can help control gestational diabetes by eating healthy foods, exercising and, if necessary, taking medication. Controlling blood sugar can prevent a difficult birth and keep you and your baby healthy. In gestational diabetes, blood sugar usually returns to normal soon after delivery. But if you've had gestational diabetes, you're at risk for type 2 diabetes. You'll continue working with your health care team to monitor and manage your blood sugar.

Gestational diabetes (or gestational diabetes mellitus, GDM) is a condition in which women without previously diagnosed diabetes exhibit high blood glucose levels during pregnancy (especially during their third trimester). Dysfunction of insulin receptors usually causes this condition. It is likely due to pregnancy related factors such as the presence of human placental lactogen that interferes with susceptible insulin receptors.  To Know More http://www.thenest.in/

How to treat gestational diabetes? - Dr. Vijayalakshmi

04:14
The first step in the treatment of gestational diabetes is to modify your diet and lifestyle changes. When I say diet changes, it means reduce your carbohydrate intake because gestational diabetes is a condition where the blood sugar levels are high. We would like to keep it in the normal range where it is below 140 mg/dl even after two hours of diet. So by way of diet change, you have to minimize your intake of carbohydrates and at the same time, maintain a balanced nutrition for the growing fetus. So instead of cutting down on carbohydrates totally, I would advice you to take small, frequent meals or you can distribute the meal intake. In between three meals, you can take some fruits and still maintain the blood sugar in the same level.. nnBest advice will be to take more of proteins and vegetables and fruits. To minimize sugars, sweets, candies and pastries. Do not skip meals and go on diet during pregnancy.. nnA little bit of exercise and an active life is mandatory. If there is a contraindication to exercise, maybe you should go for some medication from your doctor. Exercise will be moderate walking for at least half an hour everyday in the morning or evening. Not too brisk walking or not stressful working at office.. nnYou may require frequent visits to the hospital as the doctor would like to monitor your blood sugar. Ideal would be to monitor your blood sugar at home. If you ever feel its more than 140 or 160, then visit the hospital. Maybe ultrasonography every month specially in the second trimester to make sure the baby is doing well. Other tests like NSTs, blood sugar and blood and urine tests will also be checked during your visit. If there are still complications, the doctor would like to put you on medication. With good diet and exercise, oral medication is sufficient. Insulin shots will be given otherwise. If things are not settling down, hospitalization is advised. Pre term delivery might happen if there are more complications..
