The American Revolution (HIST 116) Professor Freeman lays out the logic of American resistance to British imperial policy during the 1770s. Prime Minister Lord North imposed the Intolerable Acts on Massachusetts to punish the radicals for the Boston Tea Party, and hoped that the act would divide the colonies. Instead, the colonies rallied around Massachusetts because they were worried that the Intolerable Acts set a new threatening precedent in the imperial relationship. In response to this seeming threat, the colonists formed the First Continental Congress in 1774 to determine a joint course of action. The meeting of the First Continental Congress is important for four reasons: it forced the colonists to clarify and define their grievances with Britain; it helped to form ties between the colonies; it served as a training ground for young colonial politicians; and in British eyes, it symbolized a step towards rebellion. The lecture concludes with a look at the importance of historical lessons for the colonists, and how these lessons helped form a "logic of resistance" against the new measures that Parliament was imposing upon the colonies. 00:00 - Chapter 1. ABSTRACT Scientific American placed Professor Eshel Ben-Jacob and Dr. Itay Baruchi's creation of a type of organic memory chip on its list of the year's 50 most significant scientific discoveries in 2007. For the last decade, he has pioneered the field of Systems Neuroscience, focusing first on investigations of living neural networks outside the brain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eshel_Ben-Jacob Learning from Bacteria about Information Processing Bacteria, the first and most fundamental of all organisms, lead rich social life in complex hierarchical communities. Collectively, they gather information from the environment, learn from past experience, and make decisions. Bacteria do not store genetically all the information required to respond efficiently to all possible environmental conditions. Instead, to solve new encountered problems (challenges) posed by the environment, they first assess the problem via collective sensing, then recall stored information of past experience and finally execute distributed information processing of the 109-12 bacteria in the colony, thus turning the colony into super-brain. Super-brain, because the billions of bacteria in the colony use sophisticated communication strategies to link the intracellular computation networks of each bacterium (including signaling path ways of billions of molecules) into a network of networks. I will show illuminating movies of swarming intelligence of live bacteria in which they solve optimization problems for collective decision making that are beyond what we, human beings, can solve with our most powerful computers. I will discuss the special nature of bacteria computational principles in comparison to our Turing Algorithm computational principles, showing that we can learn from the bacteria about our brain, in particular about the crucial role of the neglected other side of the brain, distributed information processing of the astrocytes. Eshel Ben-Jacob is Professor of Physics of Complex Systems and holds the Maguy-Glass Chair in Physics at Tel Aviv University. He was an early leader in the study of bacterial colonies as the key to understanding larger biological systems. He maintains that the essence of cognition is rooted in the ability of bacteria to gather, measure, and process information, and to adapt in response. For the last decade, he has pioneered the field of Systems Neuroscience, focusing first on investigations of living neural networks outside the brain and later on analysis of actual brain activity. In 2007, Scientific American selected Ben-Jacob's invention, the first hybrid NeuroMemory Chip, as one of the 50 most important achievements in all fields of science and technology for that year. The NeuroMemory Chip entails imprinting multiple memories, based upon development of a novel, system-level analysis of neural network activity (inspired by concepts from statistical physics and quantum mechanics), ideas about distributed information processing (inspired by his research on collective behaviors of bacteria) and new experimental methods based on nanotechnology (carbon nanotubes). Prof. Ben-Jacob received his PhD in physics (1982) at Tel Aviv University, Israel. He served as Vice President of the Israel Physical Society (1999-2002), then as President of the Israel Physical Society (2002-2005), initiating the online magazine PhysicaPlus, the only Hebrew-English bilingual science magazine. The general principles he has uncovered have been examined in a wide range of disciplines, including their application to amoeboid navigation, bacterial colony competition, cell motility, epilepsy, gene networks, genome sequence of pattern-forming bacteria, network theory analysis of the immune system, neural networks, search, and stock market volatility and collapse. He has examined implications of bacterial collective intelligence for neurocomputing. His scientific findings have prompted studies of their implications for computing: using chemical "tweets" to communicate, millions of bacteria self-organize to form colonies that collaborate to feed and defend themselves, as in a sophisticated social network. This talk was hosted by Boris Debic, and arranged by Zann Gill and the Microbes Mind Forum.

In which John Green teaches you about the (English) colonies in what is now the United States. He covers the first permanent English colony at Jamestown, Virginia, the various theocracies in Massachusetts, the feudal kingdom in Maryland, and even a bit about the spooky lost colony at Roanoke Island. What were the English doing in America, anyway? Lots of stuff. In Virginia, the colonists were largely there to make money. In Maryland, the idea was to create a a colony for Catholics who wanted to be serfs of the Lords Baltimore. In Massachusetts, the Pilgrims and Puritans came to America to find a place where they could freely persecute those who didn't share their beliefs. But there was a healthy profit motive in Massachusetts as well. Profits were thin at first, and so were the colonists. Trouble growing food and trouble with the natives kept the early colonies from success. Before long though, the colonists started cultivating tobacco, which was a win for everyone involved if you ignore the lung cancer angle. The Osage ballet, Wahzhazhe, is a contemporary ballet that brings together unique and diverse qualities of Oklahoma history and culture: a reverence for classical ballet that was the legacy of two famous Osage ballerinas, Maria and Marjorie Tallchief, and the richness of Osage traditional music, dance, and textile arts. The creative set designs transform the stage into accurate depictions of Osage lifestyles and the costumes are created to appear as the traditional tribal clothing that was worn during the past 200 years. The ballet depicts the history of the Osage people: their removal from their homelands, the boarding-school era, the discovery of oil on their reservation, which lead to great wealth and tragedy, and the celebration of Osage life today. Wahzhazhe is produced by Randy Tinker Smith and choreographed by Jenna Smith, both of Osage descent. Roman Jasinski acted as adviser on the project. This performance was recorded on March 23, 2013 in the Rasmuson Theater of the National Museum of the American Indian.

European powers started to create colonial empires way back in the 16th century, but businesses really took off in the 19th century, especially in Asia and Africa. During the 1800s, European powers carved out spheres of influence in China, India, and pretty much all of Africa. While all of the major (and some minor) powers in Europe participated in this new imperialism, England was by far the most dominant, once able to claim that the "sun never set on the British Empire." Also, they went to war for the right to continue to sell opium to the people of China. Twice. John will teach you how these empires managed to leverage the advances of the Industrial Revolution to build vast, wealth-generating empires. As it turns out, improved medicine, steam engines, and better guns were crucial in the 19th century conquests. September 25, 2013 - How has Eurocentric anthropology and linguistics affected the way we interpret our elders and ancestors who share their cultural knowledge with foreign researchers? Join us for a presentation with Khelsilem Rivers and April Charlo, indigenous peoples from community-based and cultural revitalization backgrounds, who will be discussing decolonization of language revitalization. Their presentation and open dialogue will address the context of rapid language loss and decline, and how colonization has affected or is embedded in the strategies of revitalization. In an effort to revitalize Indigenous languages, communities may have unknowingly adopted or assimilated colonized ways of thinking as they invest interest and attempt to repair or restore ties to culture and language. Are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha, et all with an English-mind or are we learning to speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyawēwin, Kanien'kéha with a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Nēhiyaw, Kanien'keháka mind? Indigenous languages represent one of the darkest ways in which ethnocide and cultural genocide have occurred. It is expected in the next twenty-five years over 700 of the worlds Indigenous languages will be forgotten. In the Vancouver area alone, the two Indigenous languages are considered critical endangered; Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) language has five to seven fluent speakers and hən̓q̓əmin̓əm has one fluent speaker left. Decolonizing Language Revitalization aims to put forward perspectives of shifting values, cultural understandings, and impacts on community. It is the stories we tell ourselves (as a people) that impacts who we believe we are, and then who we become. But if the stories -- even including, or especially the Indigenous ones -- are filtered through colonialism, we have become a different people because of it. The animated history of Australia in a nutshell. For centuries, rumors and legends are spreading among the traders, about the Terra Australis Incognita, unknown southern land. For Europeans, this is only a tale. However, in the middle of the sixteenth century, a series of world maps are created, so-called 'the maps from Dieppe,' documenting the latest Portuguese explorations, on which a mysterious land is found, called 'Le Grand Java.' A few centuries later, the map will be considered by some as the evidence of discovering Australia by Portuguese. Soon after, in sixteen-o-five a Dutch trader, Willem Janszoon, sets sails from the Dutch East Indies to search for a new land. According to his plan, he arrives at an unknown destination and names it 'Keer-Weer.' As it turns out, later on, it is Australia, modern-day Cape York. Since that moment, the sea route is frequented by the Dutch ships, which sometimes, sailing too far away are sighting the coast of Terra Australis. The Dutch, bring Terra Australis to the world maps. In sixteen-eighty-eight, William Dampier sets out on a voyage around the New Holland, returns and convinces the Admiralty to support another expedition. In August seventeen-sixty-eight, HMS Bark the Endeavor, under the command of Captain James Cook, sets sails from England. In the year seventeen-seventy arrives at the coast of New Holland and disembarks in several spots, including Botany Bay and Possession Island and gives the land a name - the New South Wales. Cook's expedition spreads the idea to colonize the new land, and with losing the thirteen colonies, the idea grows stronger. During that time, many people in Britain live in poverty and the penalty for theft is high. Choosing between hunger, and thievery, many Brits are choosing the theft and simultaneously overpopulates the local prisons. Officially to reduce the criminal population, and unofficially to make use of the human resources British Government sends out an expedition to create a penal colony and a bridgehead for further British colonization. In seventeen-eighty-eight under the patronage of Lord Sydney, an expedition arrives at Botany Bay under the command of Arthur Philip, carrying seven hundred and thirty convicts and two hundred and fifty free men plus the crew. Discovers a large bay, founds a settlement and names it after the patron of the expedition, Sydney. British push forward, and in eighteen-twenty-seven Edmund Lockyer founds Albany in modern-day Western Australia. Britain claims the entire continent. Along the increase of the free people, resistance grows, people do not want the penal status of the land. Finally, the British Parliament convinced, agrees to stop sending convicts to some of the colonies. Since eighteen-forty sending criminals will be gradually reduced, until the tenth of January eighteen-sixty-eight when the last shipment of convicts will reach the Western Australia. In eighteen-twenty-five the population equals about sixty thousand people, to reach four hundred-fifty thousand in eighteen-fifty-one, to touch, during a gold rush, over a million and fifty thousand people, just ten years later. Locally, Aborigines are oppressed. At the beginning of colonization, Aborigines not knowing the concept of property, do no know what treaties with the Europeans can bring. They are bringing disease and plagues decimating aborigines, and also the conquest of the natives pushed out from their homelands. Until the nineteen-sixty-seven, Aborigines, will not be considered as equal inhabitants and citizens of their native land. On the first of January nineteen-o-one, a dominion of the Commonwealth of Australia is proclaimed, and Sir Edmund Burton becomes the first prime minister of the federation. Along with the outbreak of the First World War, thousands of young people on a distant continent, are at war which they do not understand. Thousands of dead and wounded shock Australian public opinion, and make them realize the difference between the British and Australian interests. The Second World War breaks out. Like two decades earlier, Australia joins war along with Britain. However, the British are being defeated in the far east. Japan quickly takes new territories. Hong Kong falls. Singapore falls. Australia is under threat. The United Kingdom put on the defensive in Europe and cannot provide support. A turning point occurs. ANZAC asks the United States for protection. Along with its victories, the US takes the opportunity to pull Australia and New Zealand under its influence. The war in Europe ends and soon after also on the Pacific, the new world order is brought to life.

In which John Green teaches you about relations between the early English colonists and the native people the encountered in the New World. In short, these relations were poor. As soon as they arrived, the English were in conflict with the native people. At Jamestown, Captain John Smith briefly managed to get the colony on pretty solid footing with the local tribes, but it didn't last, and a long series of wars with the natives ensued. This pattern would continue in US history, with settlers pushing into native lands and pushing the inhabitants further west. In this episode, you'll learn about Wahunsunacawh (who the English called Powhatan), his daughter Pocahontas, King Philip's (aka Metacom) War, and the Mystic Massacre. By and large, the history of the Natives and the English was not a happy one, even Thanksgiving wasn't all it's cracked up to be. Buoyed by their courageous Haida elders, protesters united in peaceful resistance.
